Server also failed to mention it was restaurant week. Ordered the mafalde and cavattelle - both pretty mediocre and overpriced. They also only had one salad on the menu. For a brand new restaurant, I would have to say that the service was pretty good. But they need to work on the timing of the delivery of food to the table. In our party of four, two of us got plates, while the other two waited for a bit. Then, of the people who already had a plate of sushi, received his second sushi dish while one person still had no food. For some reason, the people bringing the food to the table kept placing everyone's food on the center of the table as it we were all sharing them. These dishes are nowhere near the size of a shareable plate. The atmosphere is great. Impressive high ceilings and sculptural nautical (but not nautical) columns in the large beautiful bar. I love how they used the track lighting as sculptural architectural elements. For the most part, the food is pretty good. I was skeptical of the "two kitchens, two cuisines" format, but the restaurant seems to manage it, there is a disconnect with pricing and portions. The truly odd thing is that normally, Italian food tends to be served generously, while Japanese food tends to be served in small portions. . . Some dishes like the sushi rolls, were a good size. The miso black cod was great and beautifully plated. The pasta Vongole was tiny with only four tiny clams. But even worse, the risotto, which is listed as a main dish was so minuscule, I would bet that it would not be enough to satisfy an infant! When we spoke to one of the black suits patrolling the dining room, they gave us an obviously rehearsed answer, "the chef likes to present the dishes as individual portion sizes". But neglected to mention that the individual portions were for infants. The hiyayakko tofu appetizer was priced higher than the risotto which was a main dish (perhaps it was an oversight and was supposed to be listed as an appetizer as well?). Desserts were delicious and creative, I find that normally, desserts are treated as an afterthought, but these were great Since we were invited to the restaurant during its first week, and we were offered a 50% discount to try it (which made the small portions bearable), I would have assumed that the restaurant would want to know our thoughts and impressions. But sadly no. Instead I sent an email with a link to make another reservation. Pass. We had to stop on the way home to grab more food to eat! read more

Great new big time restaurant just opened in prime flatiron location. Enjoyed the huge high energy bar and delicious Asian fair. It's the first Italian Asian restaurant I've been to, but they keep it as two separate menus - Roma and Aqua. Best vegetarian gyoza I've ever had. Fun vibe, great sushi, high energy. Service was friendly and they really seemed to care about your experience. Other reviews are way too harsh, for this location and type of place it's well priced, fast, and fun. read more

Just checked out @aquanewyork near Flatiron and it's definitely worth a visit! The vibe is super chic, and they've got a cool of Italian and Japanese dishes. I tried the yuzu shiso marinated lamb and it was amazing - so tender! Definitely a great spot for a fun night out with great food and even better vibes. I'm very unsure why this places gets good reviews and at this point I'm too afraid to ask. I was excited to come here based on the pictures online and the different style menu. The restaurant itself seems fancy, with the bar as the showcase. We ordered appetizers which came before our drinks. The fried calamari came with a "garlic aioli" which was essentially just mayo. All but one drink on the cocktail menu are premade before shift (which makes you wonder why it took so long to get drinks and the apps came first). Also, the drinks were served on the same platter as empty drinks and a shot glass which were just picked up from another table. Dinner actually tasted ok, we ordered both the seafood fried rice and the salmon. I give this place 1 star for the two entrees and 1 star for the gentlemen who were bussing the table and also made the dessert table side. Those two men were top notch. Shame I cannot say the same about the rest of the establishment, which was subpar at best for the prices charged. I wouldn't recommend if they were giving food away for free. read more

The food is overly priced for basic non flavorful dishes. I had the lobster pasta dish for $58. It came with a small piece of lobster on top of an unflavorful tomatoe sauce pasta which was under cooked. The music was super loud. We had to scream to hear each other. I was charged for a drink which I was told would not be on the bill. Now I have to wait about 5-7 days to get re-imbursed. There were 8 of us. The food all came of at different times. Some took about 2 hours while others took 45 mins- 1 hour.The first person who got their food finished eating and had to wait another hour and a half for everyone to finish eating. Unfortunately had a terrible experience here. It is not a welcoming environment and the staff seem confused on their own menu. Decided to try them out for happy hour (after seeing a huge sign out front). Asked the bartender what classic cocktails were included and he pointed me to the signature cocktails. Imagine my surprise when they still ask me to pay the full price despite what I was clearly told. Unfortunately this seems to be more of a tourist trap given overpriced drinks and has nothing to offer. Please avoid my fate and avoid this place. read more

Came here on 4/8 to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary which was noted on their file. Upon arriving we were seated. Waiter came over and took our drink order- the one drink I wanted from the menu he said "they were out of". So I ordered something else. Different person comes back with the drinks then waiter walks by and says "celebrating an anniversary?" And we said yes then he just walked away. No acknowledgment or anything. Totally awkward. My husbands drink was mostly soda and mine was mostly liquor and tasted horrible. Waiter comes back and takes our food order. He was very short and dry and seemed not interested in engaging with us. Different person comes back and drops off apps. They were ok. Tiny portions. Once we are done a different person comes to drop off my entree. I was sitting there waiting for my husbands entree to come which took an additional 10 minutes while my plate got cold. Why wouldn't they bring the entrees together? He ordered the lamb tortellini which was literally 6 small tortellini shells with tiny scraps of lamb inside. My beef short rib was also a very small portion filled with fat. Boneless short rib should not be fatty. It was super underwhelming. The only saving grace was the side order of truffle mash. Waiter comes back and drops off a desert menu which we were not interested in ordering at this point so we ask for the check. As my husband is signing for the bill I said to our water "you know you never even asked how our food was". He never once came to check on us. What is the point of being a server if you don't even do your job and expect a tip? He said "oh how was it". And I said well it was ok nothing special. Tiny portions and we are still hungry. He was like "oh ok". He didn't seem too concerned. This place is all for the "ambiance" and to be "seen". We are native New Yorkers and this was probably the worst restaurant we have dined at. Pretentious staff, small portions, food lacked a lot of flavor. Definitely overhyped. We are extremely disappointed that we chose this place to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I was genuinely excited to try this restaurant, especially given its unique blend of Italian and Japanese cuisine two of my favorites. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations. Things started off well, with appetizers arriving at a reasonable pace. However, the situation quickly declined when it came time for our entrées. I had ordered the A5 Wagyu (55 oz), which, in itself, was a bit excessive considering the only options offered were 55 oz and 70 oz. Still, I was willing to try it, given the quality associated with Wagyu. After waiting 30 minutes, a tomahawk steak--not the Wagyu--was brought to our table. When I let them know it wasn't what I ordered, they seemed confused. The steak was taken back, and shortly after, a woman who I believe was the manager came to our table. Rather than sincerely apologizing or offering a meaningful solution, she informed us the server was new and had made a mistake. She then offered a round of drinks as compensation, which felt inadequate given the delay and the fact that we were now over an hour into the meal with no entrée. What made things worse was that the server seemed pretty knowledgeable of everything offered in the restaurant , so I wasn't sure why the manager would use that as an excuse. The server then returned and told us we could take the tomahawk instead because it was "more expensive anyway," which was incredibly tone-deaf. We didn't order the Wagyu for the price tag we ordered it for the experience. We were told the Wagyu would be out in five minutes. After waiting another 20 minutes and still receiving nothing, we had to leave due to other commitments. When we expressed our frustration, the response was minimal. Only the drinks were comped not exactly a fair gesture considering we never even got our main course, and one of the steaks alone was priced at $500. The server took my information and claimed he would pass it on to the owner, but at this point, it felt like an empty gesture. The managers made no real effort to make things right or express concern over the poor experience.I guess they pick and choose the clients they want to give a positive experience to. In the end, what could've been a memorable night turned into a major letdown. For the price point and the reputation this place seems to strive for, I expected far better service and accountability. read more

Visually impressive, food was solid but lacked coherence, service was lackluster. It was a fine dinner but overall way too little value for the price and I have no desire to go back. The restaurant was visually impressive when we first entered, but I left feeling entirely underwhelmed. When we were seated, several in our party immediately commented how uncomfortable the seating is - the chairs lack depth such that you sit the entire meal pitched forward like your sitting on a narrow shelf. Service was disjointed with our server changing out partway through the ordering process, and neither server could effectively explain the concept of how the two menus fit together (perhaps because there isn't any real concept between the two) or how to best order between them. Because there are two separate kitchens, service is uncoordinated and things just come out when they come out in a pretty haphazard flow. We ordered a solid variety of things off both menus and several of them were very good. Highlights were the lamb mafalde, the wagyu ribeye, and the arancini. Wasn't so impressed with the Japanese side of menu (though we didn't order any sushi other than one futomaki). Drinks were quite lackluster. read more

A one word summary of Aqua is SALT! Every single thing was excessively salty. I say excessively because I have a high tolerance for salt and actually need my food to be properly salted, but this was on a whole different level. The restaurant has two menus: Italian and Japanese. Per my experience, this is often times than not a complete disaster: do one thing and do it right! Here's what we ordered along with my review of the dish: Prawn tempura: looked somewhat anemic and could've used another 3 to 4 minutes in the fryer; the sauce was very salty and almost unpalatable Calamari fritti: the only item we ordered from the Italian menu; it was overcooked ie chewy, not to mention a salt mine; the sauce was equally salty Spicy tuna, avocado, leak, and aonori powder: I hate to repeat myself, but once again, salty. The taste of the aonori powder overpowered the dish and took away from the taste of the tuna. Futomaki, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, scallion, and tobiko: bland, had no particular taste or flavor. Basically, forgettable. Salmon sushi and Red Sea bream sushi: the only two good things that I ate! Would've been a tragedy to mess these up too! We were brought a "birthday dessert" which was a small scoop of sorbet topped with white chocolate sprinkles, a presentation that was not fitting of the rest of the dishes. Though charged for it at first, they marked it as complimentary after pointing it out to the server. Every single dish was unnecessarily garnished with edible flowers, distracting from what should have been its actual aesthetic and presentation. The ambiance was nice, yet nothing spectacular. The space most certainly did not live up to the grandeur of its online photos. The service was inconsistent. The server came on strong at first, yet his enthusiasm seemed to wane just because we didn't order more food or drinks. Overall, the experience was underwhelming to say the least. Our first trip to this newly-opened, "two-kitchen" restaurant in Flatiron was a hit. We were skeptical of a Japanese/Italian restaurant and comforted to see it was both Japanese and Italian, not a fusion of the two. Our first meal was from the Japanese options, we will sample the Italian menu next time. Our appetizer and entrees were excellent, each creative and well-executed. The desserts were a standout, we had the table-prepared tiramisu, the pumpkin sundae in a real pumpkin and the espresso caviar with madeleines: each outstanding , the tiramisu for its pure perfection and the other two for both creativity and execution. The service from our waiter, Sixto and bartender, Freddy, was professional but not obsequious; friendly but not forced. We will look for both of them again. The ambiance was quieter than expected from a place with a DJ station, we had no problem hearing but it was not busy, having just opened. The decor is contemporary and tasteful with minimalist, geometric design themes echoed in menu covers and column covers. read more

Probably the worst dining experience in over 40 years of NYC dining. I was entertaining a friend from overseas and we arrived exactly on time for a 8pm reservation. The restaurant was only about 30% full yet we were made to wait while somebody would take us to our table. After 10 minutes of waiting I asked why we were not seated upon which this person says wait at the bar. After being seated, the waiter takes our drink orders and takes over 15 minutes to get a vodka & a tequila. After speaking to the manager, who messed up my second drink, a simple vodka drink with a splash of tonic, I complain that this is the worst service I've ever received in a NYC restaurant. He apologizes but does nothing about it. Although I have had a decent experience in my last few visits, tonight was so awful that I would not return to this place. Besides, my guest was also disappointed with my selection of Aqua based on this miserable experience. read more
