HOLY SHIT THEIR HWEDUPBAP IS SO GOOD. its HUGE!! its a little pricey ($15 at lunch) but seriously.. It was never ending. They didnt skimp out on the fish either!! I also got their "a-won special" for lunch which came with: -a little side of al bap (had masago, seaweed salad, and the red pickled radish). Thisb was surprisingly delicious -3 pieces of salmon, tuna, and snapper sashimi. All were incredibly fresh. I was shocked. -sushi (squid, shrimp, tuna, salmon, whitefish, snapper, and i think conch?) -2 pieces of CA roll -3 pieces of tempura (shrimp, octopus, and kabocha squash) Both dishes came with miso soup. Also received kimchi, pickled radish.. I feel like I'm missing something. Yes, for lunch, this was pretty pricey. ($15 for hwedupbap and $20 for the lunch combo). BUT IT WAS SO GOOD! We were in the neighborhood and walked in to check the place out. In our opinion, overall a regrettable experience -- "Meh. I've experienced better". Ordered Hwe Dup Bap (a mix of rice, vegetables, raw fish, seasoning, and hot pepper sauce/paste; like bibimbap, but with raw fish -- a Korean "version" of chirashi sushi, if you will), the fish egg soup/stew, chicken donkatsu, and some uni sushi. * Decent Hwe Dup Bap, although a tad overpriced ($15). * Decent spicy fish egg stew. * Uni was $10 for 2 pieces, but fresh. * Bad chicken donkatsu. * Frustrating service (or lack thereof) -- even though the restaurant was not even full. Whoever said that the "service was really good" must have gone to a different restaurant.... Bottom line: (1) The food was just OK -- but overpriced in my opinion. If you must try this place out, stick to their seafood specialties. The chicken donkatsu was lousy -- dried out and badly seasoned. (2) ... but the food was just not good enough to make up for subpar service, i.e., waitresses forgetting requests for water, forgetting soy sauce or dishes for sushi, forgetting to bring rice for the Hwe Dup Bap, etc. etc. We had some other issues with the Hwe Dup Bap, but will just leave with the comments above . . . . Their hwae dup bap is BOMB!! It's basically chopped pieces of sashimi (I think it was yellowtail and tuna) with lettuce and finely sliced pickled radishes that you mix together with a bowl of rice and the red pepper sauce. The bowl is as big as two heads and can be split between two people... and you'd still have leftovers. It also comes with miso soup to wash all that yummy goodness down. There weren't a lot of side dishes like you normally get at kbbq places but I wouldn't have touched them anyways since the portion was so big. I also recommend their fish soup as well! Service isn't superb but they weren't rude either - which I feel is the case at most Korean places. It's nothing personal :) Parking can get kind of confusing but we just parked behind some car and left the key with the valet person so they can move our car if the other cars needed to get out. read more

My client brought me here for lunch one day and told me to get the Sashimi Salad (see photo). I guess this is what their mainly know for. The sashimi was really fresh and tasty. Add in the hot sauce and you're in ecstasy. Oh yeah, I was done with my miso soup and then here comes the waitress with a pitcher of miso soup! Refills?! That's craziness! I finally went to try the fish egg rice (al-bap). It looked GORGEOUS. And I LOVE fish eggs, especially the salmon roe. It had a small smidge of an uni piece in there too. This place is the only sushi restaurant closes to me. It's not the best but it's not the worst I've been too. I always get my sushi fix here, from rolls to fish. It's a bit overpriced but I mean I guess every sushi restaurant will be a bit pricey. My food exceptionally took awhile, and this place is always nearly empty and not lively at all. It's pretty dead and the waitresses act busy when there's like no customers. It's funny. read more

A few issues with this restaurant. Refused to serve certain dishes because it was too close to closing time. They said they were closing at 2:30 pm, and we were there at 1:40 pm. I would understand if the dish I ordered would take a long time to prepare, but after much back and forth with the waitress the food came out in 10 min. I almost burned myself trying to move the piping hot dish that they served in a thin plastic container. They said they had to serve it like that not due to covid related reasons (which I would have understood) but again... because it was close to closing time. Before we even got a chance to taste the food, the server gave us a bill and stood there looking annoyed until we made the payment. Servers at other restaurants would at least ask that the payment be made first but also mention that customers are welcome to take their time finishing up. If you can't provide a decent service to customers who are seated 50 minutes before closing time then maybe you should change your closing time. Overall it was a unpleasant experience. read more

If I can give zero star I would do it without hesitate. Unbelievable Awful service that I ever experienced. When I walk into the restaurant, the waiter told me: just wait. Even before I said anything. After about 20 minutes waiting, we are finally set down, for a part of 4, the waiter throw me 2 menus, then left without a word. Food here is good, I used to come this restaurant back to few years ago, they were not that busy, and service was fairly good. I don't think many non Koreans come here but if you do, do know this is one of the few places that offer legit hwe dup bap. For around $15 you get a large bowl that can feed two filled a tonof lettuce, chopped fish (not sashimi style), seaweed and rice. Pour on the spicy sauce and you'll have yourself a somewhat healthy meal during the day. Panchan is a bit skimpy and nothing to write home about. This place is my go to place. I always come here with my bf for huge bowl of hwae do bap (mixed sashimi bowl) its great quantity and quality for the price and it's always consistent. Fresh, delicious, spicy and just full of flavor. We also get their small sashimi plate which is just as tasty. I recommend going with another group that way you can order a med or large sashimi plate and it comes with a bunch of side dishes, big entree salmon, and their popular and my fave mae eun tang (spicy cod soup). The food keeps coming and coming all from ordering a med sashimi plate so definitely try that out! read more

I love the al bap - fish eggs over rice. I will keep coming back here just for this. Over and over and over and over and over and over again. I've had other things here too, but nothing else will ever take the place of a-won al bap. Al bap is like a rainbow of fish eggs over a rice sky. clouds of seaweed salad and a sesame shower complete the painting. Their rice is always the perfect temperature, a little warm, and lovingly swaddled in a light layer of sesame oil. After my coworkers introduced me hwe dup bap at the AR food court, I've been a fan. So when I read about A Won, I put it on my to-do list and can finally check it off. They give you a HUGE bowl of hwe dup bap and it was quite tasty, perfect for the summer. When I was half way through, I was already satisfied but how can you say no to gluttony, so finished the whole damm bowl (you COULD share it but why do that? ;p) We went for dinner and it came with banchan which was also tasty, and some of my favorite ones (the fishcake and radish one). Their miso soup was the only downer, it had a weird taste to it, in other words not good miso. Their jasmine ice tea is light and refreshing especially in this heat, close to flavor water but I'm actually fine with that. Next time I'm trying their al bap, though it may only be available for lunch. BTW how is this place not also categorized as Korean? read more

Nothing complicated about this. Fresh Fish, good amount, fair price for lunch special. I left with a full belly and a smiley face. come early, once hit 12pm, it's full in literally 10 mins. They are Korean, but it didn't make a difference, food was good. A lot of older biz ppl come here for lunch, and you know they don't seek fancy, mayo concentrated "Americanized" sushi rolls. What they want is fresh fish, clean and simple. Please don't come if you're looking for that nasty " (insert city names) roll" or rolls that are named by non-Asian customers that come everyday - ie Carrie Roll, Bobby Roll or I-am-an-un-cultured-american-scared-of-raw-fish-only-imitation-crab-and-so-much-mayo-it-explodes-in-my-mouth Roll A-Won delivers with good service and good quality. Honestly the food is good.. Especially the AL Bop. It is amazing!! But every time i go the service is horrible. Especially if you're not ah juh c or ah jum ma they treat you like little kids. I'm 28 and they treated me like i was in high school. And when my friend ordered the Uni sushi, the server kept repeating that it was $10 each.. LIKE 3 TIMES! Do we look like we've never had uni before? Do we look like we can't afford a $10 sushi? what's wrong with her? not to mention every time she brought our food she didn't even say what is was asked who it was for and just tossed it on our table. What's worse was that the old folks next to us were getting total different treatment than us. When we were finished with our food I asked our server that i would like to speak to the manager or the owner. She kept asking why. I asked 5 times, she finally brought her fellow server to our table. She apologized and kept saying that it was because they were busy. You guys were so busy and yet you had time to repeat that the uni sushi was $10 each 3 times over and over again? I told the so-called manager that i love the al bob there and it's one of my favorite places in korea town, but that i would never be coming back. The first time I came here I ordered sushi rolls, which were pretty good nothing exceptional. However, the second time I came I made sure to get their hwe-dup-bap (I hope I'm writing that correctly ha). THIS is what they are known for. I was envisioning a chirashi bowl but it's totally different in a good way. It's a VERY large bowl of salad, sashimi and then a small bowl of rice. Years ago, I tried A-Wons hwe dup bap (sashimi & veggie bowl) and was blown away by the presentation, portion, and most importantly the taste. It was really nice to see that their ingredients were all fresh and they didn't skimp on them either. However, when I returned to the restaurant on my recent visit to LA, I was really disappointed. Not only did they leave quite a bit of the ingredients out of the same dish, but the fish was definitely frozen before- which is ok and actually quite common for sashimi in a lot of restaurants, but I can tell it was stored improperly. It had an earthy, freezer burn taste to it and I could not enjoy one bite of my meal. I was even more bummed out because this was the one meal I got to choose while being on vacation with a bunch of family and I was really looking forward to returning for what I've had before. I give 2 stars instead of 1 because the service was good and the waitresses were friendly. Fyi, I did not mention my disappointment to them so I can't tell you what they might have done if I did. Sometimes I get hungry for something light like a salad, but end up getting something heavy just because I figure a salad won't fill me up. Not something you have to worry about at A-Won. Their hwe dub bap, a gigantic bowl of shredded lettuce and cabbage, onions, bonito flakes, masago, and plenty of chopped up pieces of raw fish, is enough to feed 3 people. You get a side of rice, miso soup, kim chee, and daikon. (I did not like their kim chee, so sad). I liked mixing the rice up in the salad, adding a ton of the spicy chili sauce, and actually when I got home I added some ponzu to the whole thing that made it better. Even though it was tasty and did fill me up, I wasn't blown away, thus the 3 stars. I would really like to go back and try the al bap and the grilled eel bowl. Everything is just too pricey to eat alone. I suggest splitting one or two of their dishes with a couple friends, which is exactly what I will do next time. That way it's more affordable and you don't have to worry about whether or not it's ok to eat all that leftover raw fish the next day! read more

Worst food ever! I stopped by for take out during my lunch break. I order a teriyaki lunch plate and a spicy tuna roll for my co-worker. When I got to work and opened up my food container, I totally had a WTF moment. The "teriyaki" chicken was in so gooey brown sauce that looked nothing like nor tasted like teriyaki. The mixed bowl of sashimi was great but I thought that I had ordered the giant bowl. My mistake. We decided to get a CA roll thinking that the sashimi bowl wasn't enough but with the soup and sides the bowl would have been perfect for 2 people. Everything was very "authentic" so I was surprised to see the imitation crap. Good thing for them that I like crab flavored fish. There were a couple of things that were really amazing and a few staples. Overall I really enjoyed the food. I look forward to going back to try the rest of the menu. I love my fish eggs over rice and seafood salad!! This place does not joke around with the size. If you go during their weekday lunch hours, the seafood salad is only $10!! You cannot find that kind of deal in k-town. The bowl was so huge my grandma was saying that it looks like a bathroom sink! The fish eggs over rice was the best also! The server recommended for us to get one medium ($100) and one large ($140) sushi platter. Originally we were going to go for two medium which would have been enough for 3 girls and 4 guys who were not starving hungry. The sushi is decent. This review is solely for the ahl bap, which, with a few caveats, is worth ordering here. They use a variety of five differently flavored and seasoned masago. These include the ubiquitous orange masago, green wasabi infused roe, and a lemon flavored roe. There's also a somewhat scanty portion of ikura. A few other items top the plate, including veggies, seaweed, and uni. My rating here would be four stars if it wasn't for the fact that the uni, each of the five times I've eaten here, has not been very fresh and has had a definite fishy taste. Most people probably mix in the uni when they mix the rest of the bowl's contents together, thereby masking the uni's funk, but I set it aside each time to savor separately because I love uni, and doing that made it abundantly clear how unpleasant it tasted. This is the biggest issue and the one that knocked off a star for me, but there's a few other things that could be improved as well. First, the imitation crab meat - why would they include that awful tasting stuff? It's a better dish without it. Second, the rice cools down quickly when it comes into contact with all that cold roe, making it stiff and difficult to mix evenly. On the other hand, apart from this disappointing component, the rest of the dish is very tasty. It's bright, flavorful, and clean. Based purely on my uni experience and other people's comments, I haven't tried any of the sushi here. However, I did have several spoonfuls of my friend's mehoongtang, which I would also recommend. read more

I normally to go about $100 - $150 worth of food for my parents every other week and always looking for new places. On a Friday there are hardly any sushi restaurants that have halibut sashimi that are opened at 2 pm (places I normally go open 3 to 4 pm). Should have trusted Yelp.... the reviews said it wasn't fresh but people also said they give you a lot of food. What I ordered to-go: $100 worth of halibut sashimi that was supposed to come with spicy fish stew, grilled salmon neck, and six side dishes, pork donkgatsu, and fresh water eel totaling about $150 not including tip given. What I received were extremely thin pieces of halibut that barely fed two, spicy fish stew with just a piece of tail (literally the end of a tail which looked disgusting), couple radish, and what looked like kimchi in a horrible tasting soup, salmon head split in half with zero meat and zero neck part, four tiny strips of under cooked fishy eel, and nasty thin strips of pork donkgatsu. Oh the six side dishes? Garlic and jalepeno, two quail eggs, tripe, and other things I don't even remember each on a foil cup the size that would fit two quail eggs. I don't understand why they would do this in Korea town where there are tons of competition. If you guys even sold me what I thought would be $150 worth of food I might have given 3 stars for effort and service. You guys would have made a loyal customer out of me if I truly enjoyed your food. First timers... In all fairness I did not try any other dish they carry except for what I previously mentioned. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and service at A-Won. The owner's conscientiousness was apparent in the taste and look of the food. This is not a pretentious place, but it's also not a cheap place. However, I found that the balance of price and value was still very good. I grew up on Korean food, but I love Japanese food too. I'm glad that A-Won offers some of each. I ordered sashimi, but I was in a group, so we tried each others' dishes. I'd have to say that the reviews about the hwe dup bap and al bap are pretty close. Even though they weren't the end all and be all of themselves, they were delicious. We had our own little room, so it felt like we had privacy, even after the soju was flowing. The place just has an honest, confident vibe and felt like it focused on the food. Overall, we were treated well from start to finish, enjoyed a great meal, felt the bill was justified, and left thinking we'd like to come back and try more. read more

This was my first time eating Japanese​ food, so I chose California​ sushi roll and tonkatsu. The tonkatsu order contained 4-5 peices of tonkatsu, rice with seaweed, cabbage, and peices of vegatables that was sweet and sour at the same time. The order was bento shape so it contained a lot​ more than I anticipated. The tonkatsu itself was a bit dry so I wasn't able to finish eating it. The sushi was actually my favorite even though I usually never order it, though I needed to eat it moderately. The overall order was okay but I would not go there again. read more
