I love this place for 1 reason! I come for the sushi bowl! It's huge, tasty and full of yummy!

I dont really want to recommend this place to anyone. I know they are known for hwae dup bop for its large size and more than enough of sashimi but with the price and the freshness of the fish, I wouldnt even want to pay $15.95 for their food. I also tried their sushi combination which was just tuna, salmon, halibut, eel, shrimp, california roll. 14 pcs. Not fresh and very cheap selection. Unagi (fresh water eel), was so nasty. I have never tasted unagi that bad. Their miso soup has no flavor and itd just too salty! Dont waste $17.95 for this not-so-fresh-and-poor-selection sushi combo. Parking is valet I think. This is the place to go for hwe do bap and al bap. Hwe do bap is an assorted sashimi salad. You mix the diced sashimi and salad with rice and house gochujang. The giant bowl looks pretty intimidating but this delicious salad will get you to finish it in no time. The other togo dish that I order is al bap. It is a rice bowl with 7 assorted fish roes, seaweed, tamago, pickled radish ,uni and imitation crab. This bowl is like a pot of gold - everything mixes well together and very flavorful. Came here on their grand opening and everything was as expected! The restaurant is upgraded and the seafood quality is amazing. Service is top notch. Prices are higher than your decent sushi restaurants, but its definitely worth it! Plenty of parking in the parking structure. Great fresh sushi. I wish I had gotten the hwedopbap, but my grandma and I opted for the Sushi combination and chirashi. Both had excellent portions of fresh fish, and came out very quickly. This is my go to spot for hwe dop bap (raw fish over rice w veg) and al bap (fish roe over rice). Lunch special prices can't be beat and I love how the veggies are so thinly sliced on the hwe dop bap. Portions are huuuge! Pre-Covid, this was a regular lunch spot for me. They have a lot of other items, but regulars come for the hwe dop bap or al bap. My kids like the doshirak specials (salmon, chicken teriyaki) and udon. At nighttime, I'd come here for drinks and the sushi platters. So yummy and lots of different things to share. It's a low grill, cozy place with friendly servers. I had dinner with my family at A-won and we really enjoyed everything from start to finish! We are a family of 5, so we ordered the family package that costs around $200. Before coming to dine, do note that this is a Koreanized Japanese restaurant. The moment we walked in, we noticed that each table had its own "cubicle," which is very nice because it gives every table a little bit of space and privacy from all the other customers. Each table comes with a call button on the wall (a la Korean way) so you don't need to wave your hands at the employees. The family package has a TON of food! It was so much even we couldn't finish everything. I would say it would be perfect for 6 or 7 people. The pictures I posted are only some of the dishes that came with the package. They start with banchan and bring the dishes one by one. The dishes range from cold dishes like sashimi and sushi to warm dishes like grilled eel and the spicy korean soup at the end. Came here after an appointment and had about an hour for my next appointment. So, I was alone. The whole time I was there, I felt very uncomfortable. These girls did not make me feel welcome at all. 1st, they wanted to seat me at the bar. I said I prefer the booth. Next, I ordered water and my food. Immediately she took the menu from me. A-Won is one of those spots that successfully rode its first wave of popularity to become a mainstay on the K-Town scene. Had it not lucked out early on, I don't know how popular it would be today. Primarily a sushi restaurant, A-Won serves a variety of sashimi, sushi, and seafood dishes along with other traditional Korean seafood dishes. Signature dishes include the Al-Bap, which is a beautiful rice bowl featuring various fish roe, and the Hwe Dup Bap, cut up sashimi served over rice and greens. I have not personally tried the Hwe Dup Bap so I can't comment on the supposed decline in quality as of recent. The Al-Bap, however... yum. A gorgeous spread of colorful fish roe, pickled daikon, imitation crab, seaweed salad, kaiware sprouts, egg omelet, ikura, and a dollop of uni are presented on a bed of rice-- It's a beautiful sight to behold. You mix all the goodies together and eat it like a bibimbap. Previous reviewers have noted that the Al-Bap is texturally one note, but I live for those tiny beads of crunchy, briny goodness. Although the sesame oil in the rice lends a pleasant flavor, if you're like me and like a little bit of zing, go ahead and ask for the cho-gochujang (vinegar-infused red pepper paste) to mix into your bowl. A-Won's sashimi is ok, nothing stellar. My mom's Meh-Oon Tang (spicy fish soup) was also ok but nothing to write home about. I think it's safe to say that A-Won is pretty lucky to have secured an early reputation for its couple signature dishes. Since i read some article from local magazine, i bookmarked this restaurant. It's located on the busiest street, James. M. Wood and Vermont in Koreatown. However we parked the car easily because it was 10pm. Even though this restaurant close 11pm, the kitchen already shut down and only opened the sushi bar area. So we ordered the albob and the dupbob and the california roll. Instead giving bread and butter, they gave us side dishes after we ordered the main dishes. Some radish pickle, Kimchi and the Korean style veggies. Due to the fact i read local magazines few times, i had a great expectation. The albob is very similar to bibimbob but instead of giving gochujang, there's no gochujang. So i asked where the gochujang was. The sushi man at the bar told me we don't need any gochujang and i had to use chopstick to mix them. It looked so plain but after i mixed with the chopstick, it was so delicious and fluffy. That's why every magazine tells us this is the best Korean style sushi. The dupbob, i didn't have any idea. The sashimi was still very fresh but i ve never seen before even i am from Korea. After i went to LA Opera, it was too late and there was no place eat. However, this restaurant gave us chance to fill our tummy when we were hungry. Ever since I found out their Al Bap is chosen as one of Jonathan Gold's "99 Things to Eat in L.A. Before You Die", I always wanted to try this. Al Bap is a bowl of rice with different kinds of fish eggs. It was very beautiful like flower patch fields. I enjoyed it but wasn't able to finish it. Not because I was full , but it was too sweet. I asked the waitress before I ordered whether the rice is regular rice or sushi rice. Since I am not a big fan of sushi rice, I was going to ask her to change to regular rice. She told me it is prepared with regular rice so I was happy. But it tasted like it was made with sushi rice. Maybe I am too sensitive... They also put fukushinzuke ( picked radish ) on the bowl, I found that interesting since in Japan, we usually serve that with curry rice. Just ate an (Asian) rainbow for lunch, and it was every bit as awesome as I imagined. Not very filling, but each bite was pure bliss. My only knock on the Al-Bop is that it's not very filling, but I ended up ordering the sashimi platter which put me in a good place. On the menu it had the price for everything else except the toro.. made me feel like they were tryna rip me off. So we decided id juss finish my beer and find a new spot. That was when the waitress informed us we can't have just beer.. what!? I already started on my beer... and ur telling me I have to order food!? This is when I should have got up and left but being the nice guy I cam decided to just order tuna nigir.. for 5.50. Over priced especaily for tuna that was way to soon from peek to serve and the rice was old hard and cold. No where near body tempature! and the amount of rice was less than half of traditional nigiri rice. its possible they have some good dishes but from what i experienced i highly doubt it. all in all it really ruined my christmas eve with my girlfriend.. id give it a negative 5 star if I could.. LA Weekley once said A-won's Al-bap (fish roe rice bowl) is one of the best foods you must eat before dying in LA. I must say this is absoultely not true. I mean I've had better homemade Al-bap than this before and I really don't see anything good or special about their Al-bap. It is a very simple food. You get a bowl of rice, Put some sesame seed oil and some frozen fish roe on top of the rice, then there you have it: A-won's Al-bap. It was unreasonably overpriced at $15 where it should be really just about 7 dollars to be fair. I overlooked at their sushi bar to see what kind of fish they have stored for sushi/sashimi. I hate to say this, but what they got was a really mediocre selection of fish, something you'll see from the seafood section of your local grocery stores. If you come to A-Won you really have to order the Hwe-Dup-Bap. That's what they're known for and it's pretty much the best spot in ktown for Hwe-Dup-Bap. What is it you ask? It's basically sashimi cut into bite size pieces over salad, greens and rice. Then you mix it all together with Gochuchang (Korean hot sauce). I've only had it about 4 times in my life but I crave this every once in a while. Very Yummy. If you're with a group you can order a few more dishes and share as well: The Meh-Oon-Tang (spicy fish soup) - When I'm eating Korean food I feel like I always need a soup to go with it. This is the perfect soup to eat with the Hwe-Dup-Bap. The Eun-Dae-Gu-Jorim (spicy cod and daikon radish casserole) is pretty good. The grilled mackerel (Gu-i) I'm always happy with. If you eat at A-won, don't expect a traditional "sushi restaurant" this is more of a Korean Sushi Restaurant. I've never tried their sushi/sashimi so I don't know but I'd assume it's not the best since that's not what they're known for. The sushi salad comes with chunks of tuna, salmon and halibut, bonito flakes, seaweed, romaine and mixed lettuce, roe, and some sprouts. My fave is the al bap. It's so colorful and all the eggs have different flavors, citrusy (yellow), wasabi (green), more caviar flavored (black), and red and orange ones. The bowl has seasoned seaweed, pickled radish, imitation crab, sweet egg, and it's topped with two pieces of uni. Mix everything together and it's a flavor explosion of rice. I'm a fan of A Won for these two dishes and the consistency in quality and the amount of food you're given. I think they recently raised the prices by $1, but still worth every penny. I don't think it's on the menu, but for $15, ask if they have fresh uni with rice. It comes in the shell, topped with some seasoned seaweed and some pickled radish. I stumbled upon A-Won randomly while browsing Yelp, and my craving for one of its rice bowls was finally satisfied. THE FOOD I pretty much knew what I was going to get from here. It was either Hwae Dup Bab (mixed sashimi and veggies over rice) or the Al Bab (assorted fish roe over rice). I went with the latter, while my two friends went with the former. The hwae dup bab came in a huge bowl full of salad and mixed sashimi. The rice came in a small bowl on the side. I don't know how my friends finished their food, but they did. They both really liked it, especially mixed with the gochujang. Next time, I might get that and eat half for lunch, half for dinner. My al bab came in a much smaller bowl. I think I got like half the amount of food, but I'm not complaining. I cleaned that bowl like nobody's business. My dish was a rainbow coalition of fish eggs: black, red, yellow, green, and orange. Then there was a dollop of uni in the middle. I loved how the rice and the roes were proportioned perfectly. I purposefully did not mix my rice, because I wanted to get a clear taste of each type of roe. Each color had a very distinct taste from subtle to tangy. And that uni. I have tried uni three other times in my life, and I spit it out each time. It has always tasted like burnt plastic/rubber to me. But not this one. This one tasted...smooth, creamy, un-plasticky. Either my palate has been elevated over time, or I've just been eating shitty, uni knock-off. I lean more heavily toward the fact that my palate is just super elevated now. (pft.) THE SERVICE Fine. I have no complaints. Our waitress refilled our waters without being asked, and they did not have a problem with the three of us paying the same check with three cards. THE ATMOSPHERE It's kind of...old-looking? The interior just looks like it hasn't been changed since it opened. There were reserved eating booths that were like mini dining rooms, and there were also tables that were partitioned off with wood. The restaurant really tries hard to make the dining experience intimate and private. We couldn't see anybody else in the restaurant for the entire time. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Because it's sort of expected, I only dock 1 star even though usually, service is a make it or break it kind of thing for me. They aren't very good at speaking english, so don't even try to ask for modifications because they won't understand. The banchan selection is limited but yummy, and you have to ask for water if you want it. The Hewdopbap is delicious, fresh, and HUGE. They don't skimp on sashimi! Also, the Albap is just as yummy! "HDB" consists of sashimi pieces on a bed of white rice which is then topped with a huge amount of lettuce and then smothered at your own discretion with "go-chu jang" (red chili paste). Last night we had to have a late dinner around 9:30 and decided we wanted something a little on the healthier side. When deciding on where to go we wanted something also that was a bang for our buck.
