I saw the largest hwe dup bap (assorted sashimi over lettuce with side of rice and Korean sauce) on one of my friend's Instagram and insisted that we go. So, finally, a few weeks ago, I finally got to try. I know that they have deals here and there for hwe dup bap and unfortunately I missed the deal when I went (Boo). But, I was still wanting to try. A-won is definitely a no frills restaurant. There is a sushi bar and the restaurant itself is pretty decently sized. I came here on a Sunday and there was no wait. A-won is located within a small shopping plaza, so parking is limited. I found street parking and walked over. I saw that there were plenty of spots but I did come during a non peak time. I can see how the parking can get pretty bad during peak times. The waitress was prompt and of course, I ordered the hwe dup bap. The food came out pretty quickly. Seriously, the hew dup bap was in the biggest bowl that I have ever seen for sushi. I started eating right away. It was pretty delicious. I liked the fact that they gave me plenty of lettuce and decent amount sashimi. I have been trying not to eat so much white rice (which they give you on the side and supposed to mix in) and since there was so much lettuce, I was definitely full without having to each so much rice. They also provide you with miso soup and give you unlimited refills. As for the banchan, my favorite was the pickled jalapeno and radish, which went well with the mixed rice. I am definitely going to come back here again and next time, hopefully, I can catch their deals (I heard they have some throughout the year). read more

I have been coming here for years. My wife introduced me to this place before we were married. I love the Hoedeopbap, which is there signature dish. Its served in a huge bowl with fresh salmon and tuna, red leaf lettuce, and Chogochujang sauce over rice. I have had there Al-bap, which is there fish roe over rice dish. Yikes this was one of the worst sushi experiences ever. We came with a group and price wise, it was a lot more pricier than we thought (at least $15+ for a dinner item, wish there were more smaller a la carte items?). But with the server we were kinda pressured into getting the XL assorted sashimi for everyone. Idk what happened here but it was a ridiculous amount of food most I wish I had an explanation for -- there was a sashimi plate, but it also came with salad, big grilled fish heads (??), various appetizers, tempura, spicy korean fish stew. I wish the menu was more clear, especially on the fish head part, and like what to expect so we weren't stuffing our faces thinking that was it when there were many more to come. The best part was the assorted sashimi thankfully, some were great cuts of sushi, but wish we had some explanation on what some of the more unique cuts were. The bluefin tuna was amazing tho, that was the redeeming star. But still, quantity doesn't make sushi great, it's quality. I was reading through some reviews of A-Won and came across with some ridiculous complaints ignorant people have. That reviewer claimed that they were forced to pick a XL combo, which comes with a lot of tasty food, but end up being too much food--ended with a nasty one-star review. First of all, there's no such thing of being forced" to order a XL combo. The menu already stated the recommended number of people to share the food. You better not blame the restaurant because you and you "group" are all equipped with freaking small bird stomach. Secondly, the reviewer said food was good and fresh, just too much. For your information, this is korean style sashimi house, this is how they serve, giving you a lot of free side dishes. Sad to say you just didn't know better. Update 5/11/19 - 4 stars. Service dropped a notch and quantity of food was good but not exceptional. Wish it was always at the 5 star level but I guess all stars must fall. We did order what we assumed were larger portions, but maybe the med sushi combo is where we should stay. Updated pics too. Wow is all I can say. Been a while since we have been here, but all I can say is they have stepped in their game. After reading the reviews, I didn't expect much but do have some experience here and really wanted Korean style sushi, stew and side dishes. We got that and so much more. I'll let the pictures tell the story but all we ordered for four people is the medium sashimi special and LA Rib dinner. The amount of food and accompaniments for the medium sashimi special is way more than the suggested "dinner for two" it would suggest. It can easily feed four people. We really didn't need the LA Rib dinner. I think they gave us extra salad, soup, fish roe rice and a couple of other side dishes but I still think it would easily feed four people and I'm not a light eater!!!! Trust me. The service was so on point today as well. Not sure why others have had such a bad experience. I know some places have issues when there is a language barrier and I'm not a Korean speaking Korean, and we were treated very well. In fact, I usually get tested worse and didn't experience any of that. I will definitely be back and soon. Note; Korean style sushi differs from the Japanese mainly from the thickness of the cuts, side dishes (banchan) and chili paste which is nicer than soy and wasabi for some cuts of fish. This place is a Korean sashimi place. It is pricier and you have to valet (lunch & dinner) for $2. Lunch time is the best value but also really busy. The cut of the sashimi and the available menu items are Korean-styled. The restaurant is compartmentalized into booths, which give a good amount of privacy. I think the most popular dish is the hwae dup bab, which is a Korean styled bibimbap but with raw fish. The size is as big as a fry pan, so come with an appetite! It was the first time for me to try the lunch a won special, which comes with a 3 pieces of salmon, tuna, and one more fish as well as 2 rolls + tempura (carrot, sweet potato, shrimp) + al bap (roe bowl). I ordered the Assorted of Raw Fish & Vegetable over Rice (price $14.95) and let me tell you, the portion of the dish is huge. It can easily feed 2 people. The amount of assorted raw fish they put in the bowl is pretty generous. I was able to have about 1-2 fish per bite, and it was fresh - not fishy. They give you a side of side dishes and white rice, which you add into your huge bowl. There is also a mixture of other veggies in the bowl that make your bite taste healthy. If you're a fan of spicy dressing, i recommend adding the red chili they give you. Overall, I'm impressed with the dish and recommend it if you're into raw fish. A Won is inside the plaza with plenty of free parking space. Staff members are very friendly. Just a friendly reminder - they dont let you take raw food home like this one. Menu had a lot of choices from sushi and sashimi to live fish. As a first timer it was a bit intimidating to make a selection, as the menus were in Korean and didn't really explain much in English. Just note that all items ordered come with a plethora of side dishes, which are not listed. So for two, I ordered what seemed simple enough ... the "small" portion under live fish. Once the sides came to the table, it seemed like an endless amount that literally filled our entire table from corner to corner ... and the main item "live halibut sashimi" hadn't even arrived. By the time the actual item we ordered arrived, we barely could pass the half mark of the amount of halibut sashimi presented to us. Everything was very well prepared and seasoned. There were a few items that I didn't care for, such as the pike eel (too boney), sea squirt sashimi (strong iodine taste) and the monkfish stew (personally not a fan of monkfish products). However, they were just a minute amount of everything else that was served and they didn't distract of the whole meal and dining experience. Service was great! The owner and servers didn't speak fluent English, but were so courteous and accommodating in their attempts to explain the items we were being served. After church on Sunday, my friend and I (who knows all the cool places to eat at in LA/OC) suggested we grab Hwe Dup Bap (Rice with Sashimi and Salad). I'm SOOO happy she introduced me to A-Won! The restaurant is located in kind of a weird shopping plaza so it's easy to miss. Inside, it's a little tacky and reminiscent of a Real Japanese decor... But don't let any of this fool you! This place is UNBLEIVABLE! The wait-staff is friendly, the venue is incredibly clean, and the food comes out super fast. Now the best part...the Hwe Dup Bap!! I was lucky enough to sit near the sushi bar and was able to see the chef making my bowl. The dish came in the most AMAZING/GINORMOUS bowl with a bed of lettuce and various sashimi dishes to top it off. You then added a bowl of rice to the top and mixed in gochujang (red hot pepper paste). There were 2.5 handfuls on top (from what I saw) and it literally transformed the dish. Normally with HDB, you eat the fish too quickly and all you're left with is rice and lettuce. But because of the generous portion sizes, there's at least 2/3 bites of sashimi in every bite! I HIGHLY recommend this place to you and I've also heard that their other dishes are amazing. I can't wait to go back and try their Meh Oon Tang (spicy fish soup). read more

Al bap is my Mom's favorite - It is like a poke bowl, but with fish roes and other yummy ingredients. Although I am not deducting any points, I saw a piece of imitation crab and that doesn't belong in any sashimi-style dish. My thing to order is their lunch special served Monday thru Saturday: Sashimi with mini al bap. A-Won has been around forever, so there is no frill and certainly no ambience. They give you a bowl of rice with masago and seaweed and other toppings to mix together and that's pretty bomb. The sushi, just like before, was good and fresh.
