We meet again. My new favorite now has to be the lemon pepper seasoning on the shrimp and fried catfish. Speaking of I believe we plan to get some more on Tuesday hahaha. We got a few people at the job raving about this place and their dishes. I do have to honestly say the flavor is packed in the main entrees. I have tried the side dishes and we're very disappointed. -mac and cheese - not cheesy enough and needs salt - greens- needs spice and the meat was dry - Red beans and rice- weird that is was separated and the beans were not fully cooked The only side I like hands down is the garlic noodles but I'm not sure if that's cuz I love noodles. For sure come here for the seafood, appetizers but skip the sides for now. Thank me later. read more

It's a little dark and dank inside, and the floor under our table was pretty filthy (napkins, food etc) but, outside of that the service was great, our server was VERY nice & attentive and made accommodations. I ordered the lobster roll without the mayo and asked for the bayou creamy sauce instead and that was delicious!! Also had garlic fries and they use real garlic so they were realllllly good!! I came here with a party of 3 on a weekday for lunch. It was not busy at all, so we were sat down right away. The place has a nice atmosphere and theme. There are no sinks outside of individual bathrooms to wash your hands, so I can imagine there being a line when busy. The restaurant offers gloves to use but it doesn't look food grade, rather medical nitrile gloves. No one in my party felt comfortable to use it to eat. The menu has a lot to offer! I was able to try the Cajun garlic fries, garlic noodles and 1 pound of shrimp backyard style medium heat. Overall, the food was okay and nothing special to note. The portions are great, but the taste is where the food lacks. The garlic fries and garlic noodles lacked garlic and if there was garlic present it was burnt. The garlic noodles had more Parmesan than anything else and was made with fettuccine noodles which is not what I'm used to. As for the shrimp, the sauce was completely sweet and no spice at all! Although, a plus about the shrimp was the size and it wasn't overcooked and soggy. I would pass on this restaurant and recommend other Cajun/seafood boil spots with more flavor and heat offered in their sauces. read more

Visited Backyard Bayou on a rainy Friday night and there was a decent wait. However, we agreed to sit at a 2-seater table instead of a booth, and got to totally bypass the wait. Service was prompt, polite and great, though they were really busy. I liked the ambience a lot as well, modern, cozy, laidback. The food came out in decent time, but the quality varied widely between the different items we ordered. The pound of boiled headless shrimp in spicy backyard sauce was the star of the night and I'd rate it a 5 out of 5. Fresh, sweet shrimp, perfectly done, generous portions in a tasty, not-too-spicy, garlicky sauce. Unfortunately, can't say the same about the pound of crawfish we got in the same sauce. The crawfish itself wasn't very fresh, making the dish far from enjoyable. Garlic noodles are my staple at any cajun restaurant and I was highly disappointed with the dish here. They used a different kind of noodle (I think fettucine) than what most cajun places use, and then cooked the noodles al dente, unlike how cajun garlic noodles are typically cooked. This dish was a 1 out of 5 for me. I think the chefs just have a thing for cooking their carbs al dente here - the rice was cooked so "al dente" that I couldn't have more than a few spoons. This place has the potential to be a great cajun seafood restaurant, but the kitchen has a long way to go. read more

It's the mild sauce for me! We were in the area and decided to appease my tastebuds with some seafood, and other menu options. Fried Catfish, Garlic Noodles,, King Crab Legs, Lobster Rolls, Shrimp Po Boy, Alligator, Seafood Boils all sounded good I opted for the selfie bucket mild boil with 2 corn, 2 potatoes, sausage, mussels, and double shrimp, instead of crawfish, since August isn't crawfish season. My hubby want to try the grilled alligator, which was a disappointment and didn't eat it. That was some tough meat. NOTE:Alligator taste better fried The shrimp and mussels was steamed perfectly. The mild sauce was the highlight! I poured the sauce in a bowl, to dip the shrimp and mussels. The sauce was so good it made the food really tasty. Get the mild sauce it's not hot in heat if you don't like heat. Our server Steven was cool and informative. 3.5 stars because they're a little pricey. read more

Too crowded and I do appreciate the owner basically admitting the wait time too long and wish them the best! #1 on the "waitlist" (6 ppl) for Forty Five mins? After watching them seat 2 people side-by-side taking up a 4 person table, and several other 2-3 guests we left. Never given an estimated time that we'd be seated. Let me first say we've been to this restaurant on several occasions. They are on the expensive side. Our bill is usually over $200 when we eat here. We go in today January 1st and we're told that a 20% holiday fee will be added to our bill. This is absolutely outrageous. I didn't realize that we could add fees just because we want to. I will think twice before I return to this place. We ordered 2 items and left. read more

1st of all we (My Wife and I) were greeted by a lovely young woman who seated us very promptly. A few short minutes later our server came to the table and took our order. Keep in mind that we came from Castro Valley to check this place out. Our Drinks, Calamari and Clam Chowder came to the table in quick fashion. Then the Jambalaya and The Garlic noodles got to the table. OFF THE CHAIN!!!! This place has a kinda sports bar feel and TV screens everywhere, after we were done with our meal a guy came over to our table. This guy was very nice and he started talking to us like he knew us for many years. He introduced himself as Han and we chatted about business and other topics. Come to find out this guy is the owner of the restaurant so I think maybe he was trying to get a feel for what we thought about the food. Well I normally don't take leftovers but this time I did because the food was good enough to eat again and I didn't want to waste any of it. HAN - Keep it up you have a great thing going I will be back again soon - but the next time I will bring my son and his lady friend. Thank You for a great experience!! P.S. Do not order delivery through the website. At 4:30pm I placed a delivery order through their website, figured I could use the points. Website said it would be 20-30 minutes for delivery. There is no way to track delivery when your order is placed. At 5:15 I called the restaurant and was told my order was ready, they were waiting for a driver to deliver it. When I asked if they could give me an ETA the girl simply said no, as soon as there is a driver it will get delivered. I waited until 5:30 and called back again, still no driver. When I told the girl I wanted to cancel my order she said it would have to be done through the website and hung up the phone. I was set on getting my order so I decided to just place the order again through DoorDash and get my refund through the website (there is no way to get a refund through the website!!) My Oder arrived 30 minutes later. The receipt on the bag was a website order placed at 4:37!! They had DoorDash deliver my order that had now been sitting for over an hour!! Two of my items were missing and of corse everything was cold. I don't think I would even eat in the restaurant again after this. read more

I've been on a hunt for a good seafood boil near me and I think this might be the one! I came here Saturday around 5pm and there was no wait surprisingly. It did get packed real quick after we got seated so we got pretty lucky. I would highly recommend to join the waitlist if you can to avoid the wait. what we ordered: (party of 2) - selfie bucket with the house sauce in medium spice Honestly, the spice level was not there at all which was a bit disappointing. We ordered a side of the hot house sauce to dip it in which unfortunately did not make it to our table until our last two shrimps. The service was okay. They were a bit backed up since many people starting coming in all at once and they had a birthday event going on. When we did catch our server she was super nice and tried her best helping us get what we needed while helping a big party. read more

We've always enjoyed coming to Backyard Bayou but, unfortunately, our last visit here was rather disappointing. Almost half of the shrimp we ordered hadn't been cleaned properly - everything else we ordered was good, it was just the 'unclean' shrimp which was a huge turn off. read more

I don't know what it is but I really enjoy the whole mess of big bags of seafood and sauce sloshed everywhere, burning the cuts on my fingers and spilled everywhere. Kind of gross but also very feel good! We always order either the bayou or family bucket -- crawfish, shrimp, clams, mussels and crab with the backyard sauce oh myyyy it's always tasty! We're able to polish off the bayou bucket with only two people, though we have to usually unbutton our pants! I'd say it's good for 4 people max so everyone gets a good share of food, and the family bucket is good for 6+ depending on your appetites. The buckets also include corn, potatoes and sausage. The sausage is always great and juicy, but the potatoes I always feel could be cooked a bit longer. They also come in the bag whole, which is harder to bite into/work with. It would be nicer to have them cut up for easier eating and so they can soak! Two separate times they forgot to add corn to our bags. Had to ask for it afterwards and they gave it to us on the side, which just isn't the same since they haven't been stewing. We'll usually order a side dish as well, favoring the cajun and sweet potato fries which are a good portion for 3 people. The edamame is just ok, the garlic noodles are not the best. While I don't enjoy every item on the menu I love the seafood so I'll continue to come around! read more

This place was just amazing!! Our friends recommended it and Im so grateful to them for the same. The food was lip smacking, finger linking good. We tried the following and I recommend the listed MUST Haves - Garlic bread - pretty good if you have family members that dont like seafood :) Garlic noodles - Must have Cajun fries - Must have.. the best fries I have so far.. ever!! My earlier review gave this place a 5 star. However I'm taking one star away because the waiter unlike the previous one I had won't exchange the potato for extra sausages. I don't think I'm asking a lot because i wouldn't even care if it were just 1 tiny sausage but not allowing it at all made me unwelcomed. I ordered two orders of Selfie buckets each time I came here so it would've been a negligible difference for the restaurant. read more

We always come here with the fam when we are craving some seafood and food always taste really good. Usually we don't have to wait that much to get a table and also there's plenty of parking. The only downside it's that sometimes all the employees are at the register without doing nothing and they forget to be attentive with the customers. read more

The ambience is casual. Be prepared to get a little dirty but they do provide gloves. The service was very nice and pretty fast. The food is always good. I get the bag with a mix of shrimp (headless), potatoes, and corn. Would also recommend the garlic noodles and fries. I have been many times and always enjoy my meal. read more

Came here with a friend and we wanted to grab some lunch to celebrate her new job. We ordered the crab roll po boy for her and the snow crab legs with andouille sausage for myself with corn crab boil. The snow crab was a decent size and the Cajun spice was just right. Though my friend didn't enjoy the crab sandwich it came out chewy. Also she had them take it back and off our bill , our waitress asked her manager and they did no problem. I took my wife and some friends to Backyard Bayou on a Sunday around 3pm. We didn't have reservations so we had a 20 minute wait to be seated. The staff was pleasant and told us the estimated wait time. It was our 1st time eating at this restaurant and the server was very patient with us trying to figure out what to order. When the food arrived it was presentable and very tasty. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes or wants to try Louisiana style cuisine. We drove from San Jose. servers are rude and immature. The girl that took our order gave us a hard time when brought food. Then swore the lines in my water were the very last ones. None at the bar and none for to go orders. I went to front and got my own limes. There were about 8 team members working. The server never came back and no one else checked on us. As we left all the team members were looking at us and texting one another. The person in charge gave me a half ass sorry and sent me on the way. read more

We love the blackened catfish bowl and . It is delicious with their tartar sauce. It comes with slaw, white rice, and el dente vegetables. We order it every Friday in Lent and it is consistently excellent. They are short handed on Fridays (?) so you can't place a phone order you must order in person. read more

I really enjoyed backyard bayou. We added our names to the yelp waitlist before making the trek there and was seated within 5 minutes of arrival. Interior is your typical cajun boils and prices are fair. We ordered the garlic noodles, shrimp, and garlic cajun fries. The flavors were really good and flavorful. The medium wasn't too spicy in my opinion and would probably up the spice on my next visit. Service was slow at the beginning and end of our meal. It took way too long to order or to ask for our check but during our meal, our server checked on us regularly. I love that they gave us gloves instead of having to ask for it. One the better seafood places in Union City. Joined the waitlist around 645PM on a Sunday evening. It was about an hour wait. Luckily Yelp provides the time we are expected to sit so we only waited about 10mins once we actually arrived to the restaurant. The restaurant was small and packed. The service was great. We had a large group of 10 ppl so we had a big order to fill. We ordered the family bucket, 3lbs of shrimp (mild and backyard style), garlic noodles, Cajun fries, sweet potato fries, regular fries, gumbo, and of course, rice! All of which was so delicious, or shall I say, finger licking good! They provided us gloves and bibs to minimize the mess. They also have a good selection of beers and saw a few people at the bar ordering cocktails. All of us were happy and satisfied and even ordered some to-go. The environment was great too, they have multiple TVs and were playing games for everyone to watch. Also, I really appreciated that they had 3 restrooms because a lot of ppl kept going in and out to wash our hands. Service was great and would definitely recommend coming back here to satisfy any seafood craving. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SICK FOR DAYS!! All of my seafood boil was overcooked, rubbery, and NOT cleaned. Every shrimp was filled with feces I specifically ordered the head off of my shrimp so I wouldn't have to deal with cleaning the shrimp myself and was extremely disappointed. I was unable to eat any of my seafood boil the corn was overcooked and mushy. Crab meat was the consistency of tires. I live over an hour away and drove all the way there with high hopes. I was sick after eating there for a couple of days only able to hold water down. Future customers beware and save yourself the trouble! read more

Sooooo delicious! This is definitely my favorite seafood boil spot that I have tried yet. A friend and I chose to share a meal since 1 pound tends to be pretty filling. I got 1lb of shrimp medium spice and with 2 additional sides of corn and 1 side of potatoes. The spice was definitely not overpowering whatsoever until I had the corn, for some reason it was so spicy!! But, no complaints I love spice. We also ordered Cajun garlic fries on the side. The pound of headless shrimp cost around $18 dollars I believe (without add ons) and the fries were around $6 if I'm not mistaken. The service was solid we were able to split checks within our group easily. I do think it's a little unnecessary that we have to pay for gloves; seems like a tedious thing to charge for. Just keep this in mind when you come in. Overall I definitely recommend this place, it's super easy to order within groups and share all the goodness. My friend and I's total came out to about $37 which is extremely reasonable! read more

Finally felt like giving this place a try after many years of them being around, and it was better than I anticipated! Although it was much smaller inside than I imagined, it was a decent size and groups were constantly coming and going. They had a bar area, with multiple TVs, high tables/ chairs, booths, and regular tables. Me and my bf came here on a Tuesday evening and there was no wait. The server promptly took our order and the appetizers came out first, and the shrimp last. She also brought us bibs, gloves, s+p, & limes. We ordered: * garlic noodles (25% off w/ yelp check-in) * sweet potato fries * 1 side of rice * 1 lb of shrimp (head on), backyard style sauce - hot +2 corns added We like spicy and it definitely had just enough kick to it. Shrimps were pretty big. The sauce was a little lackluster though. Spicy, but missing something. Also really disappointed in how mushy the rice was. Instead of making it right or offering a simple switch for a chicken burrito like my wife had asked, she completely lacked empathy and flat-out said, "I can't remake your burrito." I called back to ask what could be done to fix this, and she started telling me to stop yelling at her. I wasn't yelling at all, my other baby was screaming in the background because my wife left the house to try and get the food fixed. She then hung up the phone on me. I was skeptical about trying this place due to some of the reviews, but I was in the area yesterday for lunch and was quite hungry. Place seemed very pleasing to the eye because of the decor. As soon as I came in, I was greeted by a young gentleman and asked how my day was. I was surprised at this because whenever I go into restaurants like this, or cajun restaurants, they would just say hi then ask how many. Thank you young man. I was then asked if I wanted a booth or a table to be sat at, and of course I wanted the booth. Waiter introduced himself, although I forgot his name. Asked me if it was my first time and proceeded to write his name on the table sheet so that I would not forget his name (ironic that I did forget). Asked him about the food that they served, and he explained the whole menu from top to bottom. Then asked if I wanted anything to drink and of course I got a beer and some water. I ordered 1lb of crawfish as it would be the first time eating crawfish so I wanted to try it and he recommended the Backyard Bayou sauce. Also got 1lb of shrimp. I like things hot so he told me to get the backyard bayou hot instead of the n'awlins hot because it was really spicy, but recommended that I got it on the side. Boy was he right, the n'awlins hot was really spicy. I had a hard time peeling the crawfish because I did not know how to correctly peel it or eat it first of all. So the waiter came by and asked how I was doing and I said I was having trouble with the crawfish, so he took the initiative to grab a pair of gloves and demonstrated how to properly peel and eat it. It was great and made life so much easier. Was just about finished with my meal, waiter came by and asked if I wanted the check. I was stuffed at this point, and gladly gave him a good tip. I appreciate the service and the tips, and as I mentioned yelp to him, he asked if I could write a review, and I usually don't write reviews because I just look up restaurants on my phone. I thought this would boost up some ratings! Overall, food was delicious, flavor was all there, heat level just perfect for my tastebuds and the service was excellent! I will definitely have to come back here again if I'm in the area! Leaving this review on a good note, Don't judge a book by its cover! The only knock I have with this place is the lack of organization from the serving staff. The owner needs to figure out how to prioritize customers first, and train his host properly. It's pretty easy cleaning a table, you walk over to the dirty table with a wash rag and tub. Fill the tub with dishes and wipe the table. Now you can seat your guests. This girl literally walked back and forth 6 times cleaning 1 table! We seriously waited 10 minutes (watching this hostess go back and forth) to get sat when there was no wait. Hey owner, when you see 2-3 parties waiting to get sat, maybe you might want to help your staff seat the customers instead of continuing to chat? Food is pretty good, but then again, you can serve me a plain boiled crab and it will still be good. Our server was very nice and attentive, but the food was pretty over priced compared to other crab shacks. Overall, I think if the owner pulls some weight and trains some of his staff better, he'll have a decent joint. read more

Rice is like paste - very soft and watery. I was expecting like a Japanese-style cooked rice that all restaurants of the same style serve. Servers don't have power to decide. I complained about the rice but he didn't didn't do anything about it. I even had to ask not to charge for it because it was not touched. I ordered a small cup of Cajun gravy. He said it's a dollar charge. The cup was much smaller than I thought. When we got the bill, he charged $1.50. Better be mindful of how these guys do the trick. Bathroom not bad, but can accommodate only 1 person at a time. Overall: Very poor and pricey. Beware of the actual charge versus what they say or show in the menu. I'd give a negative star if allowed. Unfortunately they have to be rated at least one star which they very well don't deserve. Needless to say - I'm very furious. Never again will I go there. Boiling who?? I so glad my friend told me about this place and mentioned that she favored it over Boiling Crab and I must agree!The flavors, prices and enviorment was better in my opinion. My wife and I tried the bayou bucket in which ours included a whole crab, shrimp, crawfish, and corn which was absolutely delicious. At first we requested the garlic butter flavor but our server urged us to try the B.B sauce and stated that it was a favor amongst they're guests so we decided to give it a go! It was the bomb!! We also orded the fried oyster's which we enjoyed very much and plus we got our 3 year old daughter chicken strips with garlic fries that she scarfed down quite quickly which was a sign of her enjoyment as well! The staff was very kind and all everyone that passed us checked up on us to make sure all was well and we appreciated that. I'm glad we came here and we will definitely come back for more, much more! i recommend that everyone read this review before it gets taken down and will be replaced by a 5 star review. all 1 star ratings have been deleted. obviously who ever is in charge of the yelp account only wants 5 star ratings. can you please tell me where my husband's review went along with the other 1 star reviews please?!?!?!? this restaurant is a joke. my husband wrote a review about this restaurant and it mysteriously vanished with the other poorly rated reviews. did it vanish because it was a 1 star review? i think so. what kind of establishment erases reviews? i think that's pathetic. that is clearly being dishonest and lying to the paying customers. it's funny how this restaurant has 4 stars, when it's dead and empty. I don't understand why they keep the doors open? Hmm...maybe to let flies join for you lunch? I'm really not the type of person who wants to eat and swat flies at the same time. Or maybe they can't afford AC? Now, lets get to the food review. My wife and I ordered a pound of the shrimp in garlic butter and the sauce solidified because we were too busy swatting flies. The garlic bread was burned and had a weird brown paste on it. Had to be the worst garlic bread ever. Garlic noodles were too dry...I felt like I was going to choke. The clams in the backyard bayou sauce were mostly shell and at least 5 of them did not open RED FLAG right there...the seafood is not fresh. The sauce tasted weird...did not like it at all. I can probably make my own sauce and open my own Cajun joint and close down this restaurant in a heartbeat. read more

I never knew about this place until my cousin introduced it to me...we came here for a hang out and ordered 6lb crawfish, 1lb clams and 2 dozens of Raw Oysters...5 jugs of beer...I was impress at the flavor of the crawfish, it was really good and spicy as I like it. I have tried many crawfish restaurant, this place by far is the best I tried. The sauce of the crawfish so good that I asked for a bowl of rice to eat with it...and we ordered 6lb of crawfish to go after. The oyster was really good too, it was fresh, meaty and had a nutty flavor. Overall the food was DELICIOUS. We went for lunch and it didn't seem too busy but the staff seemed really frazzled like they were getting slammed. There were 4 of us and one plate came out in about 12 minutes, then another 10 minutes went by and 2 more plates. After almost 30 minutes the 4th person still didn't have her meal. They were apologetic when she complained and cancelled the order, but it put a damper on the day. Food was pretty good but nothing incredible. Probably won't return. read more

Great selection, good prices, tasty and spicy selections of seafood and po boy sandwiches. Our server was on point! Dudes name was 'Salty'. He was always checking up on us but not so much where we can't enjoy our food. We had buttery mixture of crab, lobster, shrimp or crawfish mixed with corn and sausages floating in garlic butter which all came out great and delicious!
