The restaurant is a 5; the hotel is a 3 1/2. The Bistro is fantastic. Recently stayed one night at the hotel and ended up eating lunch, dessert, and breakfast there! The beet salad with farmer's cheese was a very good lunch item, although I was eyeing one of my companion's choices, the Croque Madame, which looked to die for! Dessert was excellent, with a good selection of seasonal ice creams and sorbets, and several dessert specials. On a Friday night, it was pretty hopping until 11:30 pm and had a very good vibe. Breakfast is included in the room rate for hotel guests, and was very good (once it arrived. Breakfast took almost 2 hours, and our server was MIA for most of it). The hotel itself is cute and basic. The rooms are city-sized hotel rooms (read: on the smaller side), the flat-screen TVs are about 15", and the bathroom had been recently updated with Kohler fixtures and new paint. Great price for the location, though! But if you're the type of person who likes to hang out in your hotel room, you'll get bored quickly. read more

From reading the other reviews, I guess I should have gone for lunch. Dinner was just okay, nothing wowed me. But what did leave me with an opinion, and why I felt compelled to share on yelp was the service. After almost 10 minutes with no water on the table and a half empty restaurant I was disappointed. The server never explained the dishes when he plopped them down and scurried off, and the whole vibe just made me very uneasy and I could not relax into the food. Great brunch spot if you can't stand the wait at the Paramount. My girlfriend and I had to catch a bus and didn't have time to wait at P so we snuck into BHHB and had a nice breakfast. It's definitely a classy atmosphere and the hosts and servers are very prompt and accommodating. I never had to ask for a drink refill nor condiments. Everything was taken care of. I recommend the mushroom omelette (toast and homemade orange marmalade that comes with it is amazing) and the vanilla pancakes with caramelized bananas. read more

Gary loves the bistro for steak frites. They are tight. Imagine with Gary for a moment: Delicious, tight, rare steak. McDonald's French fries. Greens. Butter sauce. Tight. Gary will brave the Brooks Brothers clad crowd at this narrow little Beacon Hilliest of Beacon Hill locales for that steak and those McDonald's frites. I went here for Restauarant Week and am so glad this made my list! Went with a friend and we shared entrees because we couldn't choose between the braised lamb short ribs and the duck over pappardelle. I am so glad we didn't choose just one because both were excellent! The clams and mussels were just as good with a lovely piece of bread with olive oil brushed on a spread on one half that was to die for. The dessert was good but nothing to write home about. The waiter was great making excellent commentary when asked questions about the wine or menu. Service was great and when we asked them to hold dessert they did without rushing us even though it was RW. read more

This review is really an inside scoop because I worked here for about a year while I was studying to take the LSATs and applying to law school. I'll break it down though: Bistro--General: The owners (married couple) spent a lot of time in Portugal and other places in Europe, so they really do make the place feel like a little european bistro--funky yet traditional decor (think small black and white tile and a fire place)--and they keep things simple by having a menu with a few options in all categories, but it doesn't overload you with choices. They also have a pretty good wine list, with a good variety of by the glass options. Even though it's euro, they try to mix it up with some Cali wines, too. Reservations are a must for brunch. It can get pretty crowded--also, beware of the after church crowd (families with strollers take over!). If you want to have a relaxing brunch then time it right or request a table in the back at least. Breakfast-- The Bistro is open at 7 am (at least it was when I was there) throughout the week and has a full breakfast menu--not too expensive and with a multitude of options. I really liked the museli (homemade granola, yogurt, fruit, honey). They also do a fantastic poached egg, so if you're into eggs benedict, then I highly recommend it. The coffee is strong and flavorful--if you're just a coffee and a pastry person, then you now have a better option than Starbucks, etc., to enjoy a cup of coffee and read the paper before work. Lunch-- They have some fun aps and tons of sandwiches on crusty bread (the bread is SO good! I forget where they get it, but it's delivered daily from some fancy bakery--it's one of the few things that is not made in house). I also recommend the roasted beet salad. I would say that they lack in salad options, but if you don't want fries you can op for a green salad instead (although the fries are really, really good--again, they have the whole french thing down). The prices are very reasonable. Dinner-- The Bistro is definitely a neighborhood restaurant. Regulars come in nightly, but it's also Beacon Hill, so it's pretty mellow (read: older). The dinner menu and lunch menu overlap a little, but again, the prices are quite reasonable. The atmosphere is really nice at that time because all the tables are candlelit. They have daily specials, which tend to turn into weekly specials due to popularity and ease on the kitchen. I highly recommend the seared scallops. All of the desserts are made in-house and they also run dessert specials. There are so many good ones, it's hard to pin down a recommendation, but try the meyer lemon tort. Oh my god, it's so good. Hotel-- I had my parents stay here. They liked it pretty much, but remember the whole euro thing miniaturizes everything, so if you are a bigger person (like my dad is) then you may not like it. The rooms are small but very comfortable. The beds are awesome and the bathrooms are good as well. All the rooms have flat screen tvs, too. They have full room service, but if you decide to use the room service, remember to tip! We wanted brunch so we came here. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated so we were starving by that time. Our waitress was not the friendliest. She was extremely cold and almost made me uncomfortable. I got the mushroom swiss omlette. I took one bite and thought the mushrooms almost tasted canned. I was so hungry I just ate it anyway. The other people I was with got the Vanilla pancakes which they said were really good. I should've went with that. The minute I got home I didn't feel good. No bad experiences here, but nothing spectacular either. I go back because its convenient. I wouldn't make a trip to Beacon Hill just to have a meal at BHHB though. Brunch is best way to enjoy BHHB. It's right across the street from the circus that is Paramount. For only about $3 more per plate, you can upgrade your brunch experience from Paramount to BHHB, where you'll have no wait or a short wait, and fancier entree options. The food here isn't anything to write home about. Eggs benedict and french toast are both delicious, but not special. I went for dinner once. I had a lovely meal of a beet terrine appetizer and steak frites. The beer terrine was one of the few creative options I've seen there. App and entree were both very good. Excellent food and service! I am surprised that Chris didn't see any more Asians. I was amazed to see the amount of Asians there when I dined there recently for weekend Brunch. I have had dinner there as well, both time the food was consistently superior. The waitress was super nice. Some restaurants won't allow the party to sit down if not all people are present. For my party of 6, the latest couple arrived an hour late. I was the first to arrive. The waitress immediately seated me. Dinning at the B&B is well worth the money. The brunch is particularly reasonable in price. I sampled a few different things from my party, I was very impressed by the chef. Decent, if slightly overpriced, breakfast spot. Have only been here twice and have only had breakfast each time. The homefries are deep fried and taste like little square french fries. Totally unhealthy and totally delicious. There is only one toast option but it's a really nice sourdough bread. The omelettes are well made with nice ingredients like spinach and sauteed mushrooms. I went today for brunch. It was pretty busy, so my friend and I sat up at the bar. The bartender was helpful but was not so accurate when making mimosas. Mine was a little orangey and the others I saw varied in the orange / champagne ratio too. Aside from that, I was really impressed with the pancakes and french toast that we got. The pancakes had these awesome caramelized bananas on top. They were sweet enough that they didnt need syrup. The french toast was great and had these apples on top. It tasted like an apple cobbler. Today, I didnt feel like paying attention to the service or price - $36 incl. tip for 2 people. We just walked in off the street and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the brunch. This is one of my favorite brunch spots in the Boston area. We just went today, in fact, and as usual had a fantastic brunch. For those who like to indulge their sweet tooth at brunch, they offer delicious, perfectly light french toast with caramelized apples, or vanilla pancakes that sounded good (but I didn't taste). They also have lots of savory dishes -- a variety of egg dishes, smoked salmon salads, soups, pastas, a nice selection that will have just about every palate covered. The service is very good. The coffee is fresh and keeps coming. The orange juice is not from concentrate. I didn't have a bloody mary today, but they're good here -- thickly spicy. Be advised that this is a more sophisticated environment than some brunch places -- you might not want to go looking like you just rolled out of bed. Maybe take a shower first. If you arrive early enough to not have to wait for a table, lucky you! If you do have to wait, I'd say anything under a 15-20 minute wait would be worth it. There are other decent brunch places in the area, but they're going to be crowded too, and they're certainly not better than BHB. BHB does dinner very well too, but I'm most often here for brunch. read more

Mediocre food and poor service- total waste of time and money. There are many places in Boston that do much better for a better price (Mistral, Sel de la Terre, Petit Robert Bistro, Radius, etc etc). Let me begin by saying that their cozy decor and brunch is decent (though again, they don't do anything extraordinary here). That being said, it's rare to find and overall dinner experience to be this poor. Waited 15 minutes after we checked in (though we had a reservation), no apologies and endured the snippy attitude of the maître d'. After we were finally seated, the elusive waiter (who showed consistent inattentiveness throughout the meal even when we were trying to pay him) finally came to take our orders. We went with the prix fixe special- big mistake. Duck pâté special was greasy, cold and not served with bread nor garnished properly. Lobster bisque was grainy and too salty. Proteins were undercooked and cold (had to ask for it to be reheated). Don't even get me started on the desserts or how we could hear the other waitresses cursing and complaining in the corner about their tables which was totally inappropriate... I understand that some nights get busy for the staff and maybe the chefs were off the times I've been but Beacon Hill Bistro has proven to be consistently poor in service and food- don't make the same mistake I did. Leave this place for the hotel visitors & tourists and go anywhere else! read more

I had a fabulous work dinner here, and enjoyed it all the more because the tab wasn't mine to pay. The vegetarian lasagna dish I ate was perfect in every way - fresh ingredients, lovely, delicate flavor. Service was great, wine was delicious. I've only taken off one star because for a person allergic to nuts and shellfish, the menu choices were few for me, and the dessert choices were all but non-existent. BUT, I will say that the waitstaff was well-informed of which items contained nuts, and were able to steer me away from dangerous dishes, which is a huge plus in my book (you'd be surprised at how many times this doesn't happen, even after I explain my allergy). I also loved the loud, lively atmosphere. It's the sign of a good restaurant when I can talk at full voice and not be worried that the next table over might hear what I am saying. My two friends and I wandered over here for brunch around 11am because there was a line going out the door at Paramount. Plus, we hadn't seen each other in awhile and were looking for a place to sit (and it didn't look like we would have gotten that at Paramount even if we had waited in line to get food). They told us we'd have to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table, so we sat by this lovely fireplace right next to the hostess. My brother and I set out to grab brunch at the Paramount across the street but immediately felt lazy when we saw how long the line was. Saving ourselves a half hour of standing time was worth a few extra bucks to go sit at the bistro. We were seated immediately and our waitress was prompt and pleasant. I ordered a bloody mary. It came complete with the most delicious olives ever and when I asked after a few extra the waitress returned quickly with two full skewers of olives. The details are important during a meal for me and our waitress was the perfect level of attentive and managed to sweep in and out between the close tables removing extra silverware etc almost without us noticing. The food. Oh. My. It was amazing. I got the scrambled eggs with salmon and they were something to write home about. Perfectly light. My order came with thick crispy toast and the most mouth watering jam I've ever had. I don't even like jam! My brother was looking across the table at me like I was nuts because I could not stop commenting on the jam. His breakfast looked top notch as well and he was happy when the waitress backed him up when I teased him about a grown man ordering apple juice. So he's a fan too. Now, the best part. The check came and we were SHOCKED. I can't remember ever getting a check in Boston and being surprised I was charged less than I expected. We even double checked to be sure she charged us for everything. I was extra happy that we didn't bother to stand in line at the Paramount when I realized I only ended up paying about 5 bucks more to eat at the Bistro. And that included an "adult beverage." One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is to go for brunch. New to Boston, I really just yelp or ask for recommendations. We wanted to go to Paramount but the line was ridiculous so we walked into BHB. I always order 2 meals for brunch. You've gotta have eggs AND pancakes! DUH! And....what brunch without Bloody Marys? Overall, it wasn't the best brunch I've had but it was pretty good. The pancakes were cakey which is not something I prefer. I prefer light and fluffy. I also prefer bloody marys at The Union Pool Hall in Williamsburg. How can you beat 2 for 1 Bloody Mary's which a Taco Truck inside the bar (of the outside)?? Plus, they make their own bloody mary mix and you can have either spicy, or extra spicy! It was okay not great for the price. read more

Having forsworn meals at Bistro months ago I relented and broke my own promise when I was invited to Christmas Day dinner. I'll cut to the chase. Our meal scored in the fair to bad range. Around us at other tables, food was being sent back for various reasons and at our table one entree, which eventually made its diner seriously ill, was sent back for being undercooked. My boyfriend and I made reservations for our Valentine's Dinner this year at BHB. They were serving a prix fixe meal which looked pretty good and when we were making reservations they still had the key times available. I felt the overall atmosphere of the place was more casual than I expected, but still nice. I enjoyed the bistro feel but felt it was out of place with the prices on the menu. At any rate, the place was hopping and they were understaffed for some reason so the service was more two-star, but since our waitress was trying so hard to handle so many tables I figured why deduct the overall stars. I hope next year they plan for a bigger crowd on V-Day and have some more staff on hand. The food was quite good and I enjoyed the menu. There was an oyster amuse bouche, I ordered the gnocchi for an appetizer, the beef for dinner and a mexican chocolate torte for dessert. My bf got a duck mousse for the appetizer, the duck for dinner and had a rose rice pudding for dessert. Overall the dishes were well done, the duck was especially delicious, and came out quite quickly (too quickly at times). The wine pairing were well done. My feeling is that if others wanted to enjoy dinner at BHB I would certainly come along, but nothing was so fantastic that I would have to return. I recently went to dinner at the Beacon Hill Bistro for the first time after living nearby for years. It seems that my initial instinct (after reading the menu placed outside) was correct: this place is no good. The food sounds complicated, with LONG dish descriptions that include the most elemental ingredients, the purpose of which escaped both me and my guest. The flavour combinations were bizarre and there was no real theme for the menu. Overall, the menu has the feel of a recent culinary school graduate at the wheel for the first time. I am a real foodie, eating out 4 or more times a week. The service was friendly, but slow. Also, this place enjoys possibly the WORST reputation for employee treatment (one of the other reasons I have avoided it). The food was overpriced. On the plus side, the decoration was nice and drinks at the bar are always great. There are loads of delicious places nearby who are the same price or comparable. We ended up here last-minute for Restaurant Week as we heard our other pick was not that great. Despite the cougars in the corner, the general up-itself attitude, I was determined to enjoy BHB. However, the waiter was entirely distracted, almost, didn't act like he wanted to make our dining experience pleasant and professed not to hear us half the time. I felt like I didn't belong there, which was depressing as it was supposed to be a "special" night out. Anyway, for a summer menu, the food was too heavy - rich, buttery and way undersalted. The falafel was tasty, but this huge chunk that tasted thick, the veal was far too heavy and the dessert pushed me over the edge. Even the frosting felt like it could have used salt! The overall impression I got from this restaurant is that it is very overpriced for what you're getting. I was not all that excited about having to walk through the Common from the parking garage on a night with subarctic temperatures. You figure a hotel / restaurant combo would spring for a valet, but no such luck. The ambiance was nice and the staff seemed friendly. The restaurant is very narrow and has a modern feel to it. The small bar was also cozy and enjoyable. Admittedly, the food was good, just not $60 per meal good. I had rabbit, which was tasty, as well as artichoke soup which I thought was slightly exotic. The chocolate mousse cake was also very good. And they did have a decent selection of wines by the glass. However, when I got the bill, I almost fell out of my chair. For four people the bill came to well over $60 a person. For a bowl of soup, an entree, one glass of wine, and splitting a dessert with somebody, that seems a little high for me. So I'll start with the positives: The wine was really good. The steak was cooked exactly as I like it. There was a family with a little boy wearing sunglasses around his neck attached by one of those rubber strings. Super cute! I might have given this place two stars if my expectations weren't higher. With $20-$30 entrees and a Charles Street location, I thought this place would be good! I ordered the steak frites and the fries were basically generic frozen fries: McDonalds style. On the side was literally just a bunch of edible leaves. No dressing. They were flavorful enough, but it was weird. My friend ordered the scallops and couscous. While I didn't try any of it, the presentation was horrible - as if they just dumped everything on the plate. My other friend ordered the DUCK and was presented with the SALMON. The server apologized and offered to buy her a drink, but we all had to wait while they prepared the new meal. As we waited, my McDonalds fries got cold. They waited a while to bring out the food, but not as long as it would have likely taken to prepare, so they probably grabbed a plate already made from the kitchen. So meh. Also, my steak was filling, but the girls I was with were still starving and ready to go for burgers after dinner. Really not worth it. read more

Came here for restaurant week. I like the skate wing, which I was looking forward to, as I had never had this type of fish before. It was really good and the portion is good for restaurant week. Dessert was sub-par, and among 5 girls, we ordered all the available options on the restaurant week menu, so it wasn't just that one dessert that wasn't good. I have to say one thing that made me gave it 2 stars is because the service was horrible, that's really important for a overall restaurant experience since you wouldn't tip less than 20% for these places. They seated 5 people at a 4 people table. In addition, the waitress didn't take the time to explain the menu as if we were not going to be return customers because we're there because of restaurant week. Come on!! The check is still ~$50 per person. If you only care about the taste of food, this place is worth a try; but for this price range, you can find a lot of places with GOOD service and Great food in Boston... read more

I was excited to go here for my birthday dinner the other night, but we left feeling underwhelmed with the staff and sadly disappointed with the food. Our server seemed annoyed with us from the first introduction up until we left, which really put a damper on our evening. The food came out promptly and as ordered, but we just couldn't help but feel like an intrusion to her night. All of the food we ordered came out very bland. The appetizer salads seemed intriguing on the menu with different flavored vinaigrettes, etc but the flavor just wasn't there. We both ordered the duck which was cooked well with a nice crispy skin, but the meat was very under seasoned and served on a heap of limp, over-braised dark greens. We ordered the "homemade cream" for dessert which is their house-made ice cream and were disappointed with the texture. It was dry instead of creamy and actually crumbled apart in our spoon when we ate it from all of the ice crystals. I was really hoping to enjoy this bistro more, but sadly the rude service and sub-par food will prevent us from returning. read more

My family went here for a farewell dinner for my brother who is off to Japan for work. We really enjoyed our experience here. The atmosphere was laid back and quiet cuz it was a Monday night. With its white micro tiled floors, intimate tables and wall long mirror the well lit dining room was very bistro and very cool. We ordered a bottle of Chilean Red Wine which was delicious. I got the bib salad for a starter. The lettuce was fresh and crisp and dressed perfectly with a light lemon dressing. It came with fresh juicy grapes and crunchy flavorful hazelnuts. Very tasty. Perfect appatizer size. For my entrée I opted for the Roasted Chicken Breast. it was very good. The skin was crisp and the meat was moist. It was presented over kale & black eyed peas which were flavored with some zesty andoulle sausage. Usually my family shares each others meals but ours were all so good that we devoured our own without sharing. For a dessert I had the gingerbread cake. It was a small but flavorful plate with coffee icecream and a caramel drizzle. Very delucious. There was some crumbled cookie around the ice cream that was wonderful. The coffee hit the spot. Our server Dina did an excellent job. She was attentive and helpful with several of the questions we had. She always had a smile and took several pictures for us. She really added to our enjoyment. The only negatives were the meat around the bone of my chicken wasn't cooked through. Also the desserts didn't all come out at the same time. All in all a very good meal. My daughter and I had an amazing dinner at the Beacon Hill Bistro. My daughter had the Fried Green Tomatoes with Basil Aioli to start with and the Gnocchi for an entree, which she absolutely enjoyed. I had the Watermelon Salad with Feta, very refreshing and beautifully plated. For the entree, I had the Dry Aged Duck Breast with Cipollini Onions, it was cooked perfectly and exceeded my expectations--delicious! The service, ambiance and food were all excellent. The location for this bistro is great. The ambiance and decor is beautiful, yet also fun. That being said I did not enjoy this meal as much as the ambiance. I came here with my mother and grandmother when they were visiting from California. Our original plan was to go to the Paramount, but the grandmother didn't want to stand in a line for so long (understandable), so we went to BHHB instead. I ordered the vanilla pancakes with caramelized bananas and made a special request of the waiter. I asked him if he could cook the bananas into the pancake rather than just put them on top. I then asked him if he could also add the braised apples from the French toast in the pancakes as well. I know I made a difficult and confusing order that was probably quite annoying and a bit confusing, but I offered to pay extra. The waiter seemed to be really confused and said he would check and see if this were possible. I have no clue why it would not be possible as the pancakes are being cooked there and they have these ingredients. A bit later they bring out the food and my order doesn't have anything I asked for. I was disappointed, but didn't complain. The pancakes were fine, but it would have been nice to have been told it was impossible to cook bananas inside pancakes. And I get it, I was ordering off the menu and that's an annoying thing to do... But they already had the ingredients. My grandmother ordered the salmon and bagel and the bagel she got was one of those kid sized 3-4 inch bagels. She loved this because she likes small meals and is always concerned about limiting fat and carbohydrates, but I would have still been starving after that meal. read more

Woof! Awful! Went to dinner on a friday night to the Beacon Hill Bistro. Girlfriend and I live a block and a half away and have heard over the past few months it was worth a stop so we finally went. We loved the options and the wine list. As we settled in we thought this was going to be our new spot. Oh sweet jesus we were wrong. The ordering of wine was a procedure as anything we ordered wasn't available. I ordered the south carolina shrimp and the chicken and the Mrs ordered the duck risotto and the burger. The food arrived a brisk hour and 45 minutes later. The risotto resembled something closer to a duck stew, nothing close to risotto-like, the chicken was salty and tasteless, the shrimp was pretty bland and the burger would be fine if it didn't have this salsa concoction that made it near inedible. Listen, I'm a reasonable guy and live close to this restaurant. Save yourself the $140, come over and I'll slap you in the face with some lukewarm chicken and you can go home happy knowing you saved yourself from diarrhea inducing bland food. Some side notes: The sides we ordered never arrived and another waiter brought us a cooling stone for the wine after we had basically finished the bottle. Both items were a little too late. This review is for dessert & coffee only...although I'm DYING to try their wine pairing dinner's on Monday night. We stopped in to BHB on Friday night for dessert & coffee after trying to vie for a seat at the intensely overcrowded 75 Chestnut. The atmosphere at BHB was much more appealing to us and my parents were grateful that the decibel of volume was low enough that you could actually hear conversation...and we were seated right away. The coffee was good- although my latte was so insanely hot I barely got to drink it before we had to leave to catch our show at Sculler's. The dessert menu was eclectic & fun..two of us tried the S'more's dessert with homemade graham crackers, toasted house made marshmallows, banana ice cream & just the right amount of dark chocolate fudge. This certainly hit the right notes if you wanted something sweet with a little bit of savory...The other desserts we tried were the Blue Flower Early Grey Creme brulee which was interesting in its flavor and quite delicious, but the texture wasn't truly the custard most brulee's have. The sorbet's and ice creams were quite good as was the service. I'm certainly looking forward to their Russian River Valley wine tasting night...and would absolutely come back for dessert! read more

Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I always have the feeling that I'm going to be seated at a table next to Warren Beaty and Annette Benning, for some reason. The food is great, the atomosphere is relaxed, the service is everything you could ask for. I've only been for dinner but would LOVE to try brunch - the menu looks amazing - and I'm sure if it is anything like dinner service it would taste fantastic. read more
