Ok, you will always see me leaving a not-so-great review when the service stinks. My order goes like this: Girl stares at me blankly for a few moments then says "suuuup?" (wtf?!!) No: Hello/Welcome/How are you?/Do you have any questions? I tell her what I want, she takes my order while joking with her pal in the back at the same time. Gives me my receipt and says it will be a few.... continues talking to her pal in the back. No: Thank you/Enjoy/Have a nice night I think she said a total of 5 words to me. Service S.U.C.K.S!!!! It's only saving grace was that my thai tea and coffee were good and they have free wifi... but big deal. Having to head to the DMA, this was a nice surprise on the walk home. A full array of sweet and savory crepes, omelets, scrambles, and smoothies was on the menu as I opted for The Vienna, a crepe filled with mushrooms, spinach, sun-dried tomato pesto, roasted garlic, almonds, and provolone cheese. Served with a side of roasted potato, one bite convinced me to get the entire amount packaged up so I could take it home and share it; the bloody thing was that good! Walking home, I advised K I had some breakfast to share and he was pretty apathetic -- until I got home and he tasted this crepe. This is one bad-ass mother of a crepe and for $6.95, a great deal. Not quite in our neighborhood for daily dining (sadly so), but worth an occasional walk up the hill, most definitely. read more

If you take your coffee seriously you'll be disappointed. Breakfast has not many options, and it takes forever to be ready at your table. Staff is not excellent except for the owner. I would recommend this place for beers after work with friends. read more

This is my corner spot, almost a habit to go here for breakfast on Sundays and I've only lived in the area for about 6 weeks. A great laid back and relaxed atmosphere with little to no ego, so I don't mind rolling down here looking like a bum after a night of drinking. Love breakfast here. Their crepes and scrambles are amazing - I'd recommend the La Mancha scramble. Burgers are great for a quick and casual $10 dinner if you don't have time to cook yourself, and the fries are awesome as well. Free wireless and beers for $1.50. Definitely not up to par with all the other great coffee shops that SF has to offer. I ordered a fruit plate and a cappuccino. All of the pineapple on the fruit plate was BROWN. And the espresso tasted like I got a cappuccino at a gas station. To top it all off this waitress saw the receipt on my table, grabbed it away, and yelled across the store for me to get up in the middle of my meal, and come back to the counter to sign a receipt that they GAVE me. If you come here wanting a crepe, be prepared for at least a ten-minute perusal of their crepe menu. More savory selections than sweet, but the crepe we ordered was tasty, fresh, and filled with ingredients just to our liking. Sadly we did not get a chance to enjoy a savory crepe, but I'm sure they're decent. 4. DID I MENTION HAPPY HOUR... FOR CHEAP??? and 5. Bean Bag was a favorite breakfast spot of mine back when I lived in the city more than 10 years ago. I loved their bagels, and oh, that heavenly sundried tomato smoked cheddar cream cheese. Coffee was always tasty too. The years had passed, and I'd had many a mediocre bagel and equally unimaginative smears in the meantime. I loved everything about this place. The vibe, the people, the food. It was all just a perfect culmination of things that made for a great morning. When we came in, it wasn't too busy, but we definitely came at the right time, because it wasn't long before the line was nearing the door and there was nowhere to sit. The menu was vast and I wanted to try so much of it--luckily I saw the lox bagel and blurted that out before I got the chance to change my mind and second guess my decision. Our service was good and the lox was picturesque, large and delicious. We both had some work to do and, despite trying two different tables, ended up with uneven workspace, but that was OK, because as time passed, I was just thankful for a place to sit. Things got pretty busy and I had to ask for the water dispenser to be refilled, much to the chagrin of a couple of relaxed employees--I'm sure they didn't get a breath for another hour or so. I'd love to come back here and try some other breakfast and maybe get a morning beer and live it up on some lazy vacation Sunday. This little place really has a great relaxed and friendly vibe to it. Nice atmosphere for a mid-day break or even a meal. They seemed to have a large selection of sandwiches, breakfast items, and even sweet crepes. A lot of the usual coffee drinks (espresso, cappucino, macchiato, etc.) but they also serve smoothies. I enjoyed the window seating since it felt nice to look out onto Divisadero while I was chatting with my friends. The fries that my friend ordered were also piping hot, which was a sign of the freshness of the food. You might be wondering why I am only giving it three stars--there was nothing bad about the place, but nothing seemed super special about it to me either. As a displaced Californian now living in Boston, places like Bean Bag are what make me want to return. Quaint, friendly service, delicious food. And now I hear there are happy hour beers below $2? Bean Bag, I wish I could pick you up and drop you across the street from my apartment. The tuscan crepe was delectable, and as it was paired with a side salad, an incredible deal. The best way to soak in SF. ! This is a cool little place right on a corner where you are aloud to stand around outside and drink beer while chatting it up with your pals. Not just any beer but the have a good verity of tasty brews they serve you for about 2 bucks a pop. I was instantly hooked on the Anchor Steam. If you want to understand what NOPA as a neighborhood is like, just visit Bean Bag. The clientele and atmosphere at this local coffee shop and brunch spot are definitive of NOPA. When I first moved to the area, I was somewhat intimidated by the Bean Bag crowd: I'd walk through packs of scene kids with beers and cigarettes in the evenings and groups of them with breakfast granola and feel a little left out. But then I started to come here and realized that everyone is way nice, the food is way good, and it's overall a place I actually LIKE to go. For breakfast, I say get the breakfast burrito. I'd never tried one before Bean Bag and now love love love it. The coffee is also very good and sometimes my lattes even come with little hearts or leaves in the foam. In the evenings, you can enjoy a glass of beer at their outdoor tables and listen to muffled sounds coming from the Independent across the street. read more

I always like to start a review with a story about how I happened upon the place....and this review is no different. On my way over to Wazeima, I spotted this place one evening and was like I wanna come back here. Peaking in the window I noticed they did breakfast stuff...so I was totally sold for a nice little Saturday morning. Now the real trick was to find a Saturday morning when I was not getting up at the crack of dawn to ride my bike ;-) The simple solution to no early morning bike ride? Give up? Drinkin' the night before, of course ;-) Any who, slept-in on Saturday and then rolled to Bean bag for coffee and grub. Ordered crepes and coffee! Can't remember what crepe I got, but it was tasty! The selection of coffee was also excellent. I love having a variety of coffee to try. I think I settled on the organic. Been back for espresso since. Not too impressed with the macchiato I was served. Although the barista knew what she was talking about when she asked me if I wanted my macchiato more wet. So will be back to try another espresso dirnk. Definitely will be back to hang out and drink coffee at one of the outside tables and to try more crepes! **update 11/26/07** Finally go the opportunity to check out the $1.29 beers. There's fewer and fewer places you can even hope to get a PBR for that cheap, and they serve awesome beer. Stopped in for a quick dinner before grabbing ice cream for National Ice Cream cone day. It turns out that it was a very good stop! The boyfriend and I shared a Bodega Bay sandwich, which was awesome, because it was basically tuna melt toast on focaccia with a side of fries that look like they would make excellent chips. Yes, British chips, American fries, blah, blah, blah...the point is, those were some tastylicious, perfectly cooked fries, and the tuna was yummy. Nice and chill; one of those places where you take your dishes to a station and all the things you need are on a wall. I'm very fond of such places. I like being able to just grab myself a glass of water over waving waiters down. I would definitely go back, as it was nice, simple, decorated nicely, and the food was tasty. Would be just baseline, if it weren't for the beer. The menu is strong, healthy, interesting, and fun. Staff is adorable, friendly, hip, and kind. Service is prompt, efficient, competent, and awesome. This has got to have the cheapest beers in the city. I think it is $1.75? This is for a 12 ounce plastic cup of some badass beers. This confuses me and almost earns 5 stars due to it. Confusing me, as well as having cheap ass draught beer. The food was AWESOME.... the sausage pasta was really well received, and my burger was solid as it could be from such a small grill, operation. Nothing too exciting with the burger, but they did have BACON! Yay! The only reason I cannot give this place 5 stars, as of now, is that I could never imagine myself shoving off to the Bean Bag for any reason ever. If I am about to hit the Indy, and I need to find a place? Definitely this joint. Nopa is too much of a pricey scene for a one stop before the Independent, and the Bean Bag atmosphere (close, and friendly fighting for tables) has more of that community, down home vibe that I am looking for before a show. Regulars may have seen me lugging my baby and my universal stroller upstairs from Beanbag since the room where we stay when in SF is above the dining room. Thank Christ. Praise Allah. It is still possible to get shitfaced in San Francisco for under $10. Bean Bag is a great launching point for a night of complete debauchery. Happy hour goes from 3-10 pm every day, and even Stella is around $1.49 a pint. Too bad this place closes at 10. The Hefeweizen they serve is kinda nasty. It tastes like it was mixed with Tang.... but they have Prohibition and Stella. Just those two for less than $1.50 each is enough variety for me. The food here is OK. It's certainly not offensive, but everything is just kinda blah. I'd recommend the savory crepes over most of the other dishes I've tried. The servers here are usually very cool, witty, and friendly. read more

I love this place. It's now my go to place when I've had a long day at work and don't feel like cooking or eating at some fancy place where I have to worry about what shoes I'm wearing. So far I've had a pasta dish, the fried calamari (a steal at $5 - at least IMO), the fried platter (I'm from Texas, I have an addiction to fried food), the hamburger with fries, the Petaluma, pancakes, and the La Mancha. All of them good. It's not gourmet, but it's decent. The fried stuff came with this sweet dipping sauce that's so tasty. (Note on the burger: the burger was really juicy and tasty, but the fries were so so surprising b/c everything else fried was great) I especially like that I can come here Sunday morning and grab brunch without waiting for an hour or having to come super early. It can be tough to get a table here if the Independent is having a show, but the tables seem to turnover pretty quickly and people are really nice about letting you have extra chairs from their tables. It's a great low key neighborhood place to grab a bite to eat. read more

A bit ironic this is a coffee house because I found the food to be much better than the coffee. This does not mean the coffee was bad, but it definitely wasn't anything special. Don't come here expecting a beautifully crafted latte or cappuccino like you'd be able to get at countless other coffee shops around the city. There's only one thing I do at the Bean Bag, and that's drink $1.75 Microbrews. They come to $1.90 (with tax), so if you buy two and pay with a $5 bill, you're giving $1.20 as a tip. This is small by bar standards, but excellent by coffee house standards. Therefore, I drink good cheap beer and support my local barista. Win win.
