This morning I was craving a cinnamon roll, and to be honest the last two places I went to did not curb the crave, so, I decided to give Bear Buns a try. And I am happy I did!! The inside of the coffee shop is super cute, had seating for about 18, including some unique single tops. It's a comfortable all inclusive shop. I love how the city's gayborhood vibe has expanded and continues to be accepted in places aside from Hillcrest. Community bulletin boards - check Local art - check Friendly baristas- check check (who tell you what they honestly love, what are the best sellers and what you may like the best) They also deliver items from the kitchen to your table on the day I was here-- which was mid week. Cutsy sings- check Appropriate music level to allow for chat but hides kitchen noise -- check I ordered a mocha and a cinnamon roll. I guess I was basic today, it ran me about $10.00. They both were good. The cinnamon roll, contrary to other comments, is not too sweet. It is on a sourdough base (I think), with a cream cheese frosting. It could use a wee more cinnamon (but I am a total cinnamon lover). You could achieve "more cinnamon" by shaking some a top it with the coffee condiments. With that being said, I will return again to try the other varieties of buns... cuz they are the perfect combination of sweet, savory, chewy and crumb. The mocha, was as I would expect. Great blend of chocolate and coffee, served at the perfect temp. With the added kicker of coffee art . The next coffee I'll try is the Mexican Mocha, one guest got that while I was here and loved it!! I also heard rave reviews of the breakfast sandwich. Parking, on the street, was easy and abundant. Make sure to check both ways when you cross, it can get busy. All the food is packed "to go". So you can choose to eat in or take away. The condiment bar is STRONG!!! You won't be wanting for anything. One comment, review or something said there was seating outside, which would for suitable for doggos. When I came by, there was no such seating and I saw one dog mum and dad leave sad. So. If you're looking for a dog friendly spot, this may not be your place, though.... This was a cute little place tucked very unassumingly at the edge of a small parking lot that took me by surprise! When you walk in you're greeted with a very welcoming vibe and the best smells! The sticky bun and cinnamon rolls (and really all the items) are huge! The Bennie sandwich was truly a unique take on a breakfast sandwich that I haven't seen anywhere else- the house made bun was flavored and gave the sandwich a nice touch! As a big Eggs Benedict girlie I've never seen a sandwich version so I was pleasantly surprised - I'd have loved to see a fried or poached egg on it instead of scrambled but it was still very good all the same! Clearly lots of love goes into this place, you can feel it as you look around at the business cards and flyers and can get a sense that people feel accepted here. This is such a cute little shop, the decor inside and out feels so cute and welcoming. Everything we got from here was absolutely delicious! The lemon bar was the perfect amount of sweet and tartness, the blueberry pie crust had the perfect texture and the filling was so yummy. 5 stars all the way! I am glad my friend suggested meeting here (my first time) and was happy to find that it had ample parking and was in a cute little house. There is both outdoor seating and indoor in a cozy space perfect for meeting friends or working/studying (wifi available). I was impressed by all of their pastries and coffee selection and it was hard choosing! I did settle on the seasonal gingerbread latte with almond Mik, chocolate muffin and bread pudding. I love that they also heat the pastry for you if you would like. The coffee was good with just a slight hint of gingerbread but I would say my favorite was the bread pudding (made out of their cinnamon roll with caramel on top) - so delicious! For the cherry on top, everyone who worked here was friendly and I had a very pleasant time here. I will definitely be returning soon! read more

I would also like to say that I will also miss the former barista who under the most stressful xtra-busy days stayed composed and provided outstanding customer service. It appears that, according to neighborhood gossip, Bear Buns ownership has changed as of March 3rd. Due to a modified budget I haven't visited this Cafe in a long time, apologies. Today I decided to pay a visit. Gone was the bustling laughter and conversation. Prices have changed and coffee cup 2/3 full, an adjustment that I will have to conform with. I paid $8.25 for a small drink; inflation=dynamic pricing. That being said the new staff is super nice and takes time to answer questions. Next visit I will have to try a cinnamon roll that, under former ownership, used to sell-out. I will also have to revisit the Birdie breakfast sandwich, my fave. Congratulations to the new owner(s). Service was just as fast and friendly as the last time. I got the pumpkin pie latte and what I like about this place is you can really taste the pumpkin. Where there are a lot of places you can't really. The muffins always look good and fresh. Was going to get one but not hungry and didn't want to carry it back home. I've been holding back writing this review as I wanted to give the new owner time to adjust to this neighborhood staple. To be honest, I was also a little bitter of him firing the staff many of us loved and bringing on a new crew. But time has passed and I decided to stop by for some treats. The girls who waited on me were very kind and quick. Unfortunately, the treats were bad. They definitely made changes in the ingredients. The muffins (we got blueberry and chocolate chip) which were once moist,fluffy,and delicious,tasted like old vegetable oil,the berries tasted like they are dehydrate. The choc chip lacked flavor as did the cookies. If we can't have the staff can we at least have the original flavors of the treats that made us all want to comeback?! New owners? I hadn't been here in a while, so I stopped by the other day to pick up cinnamon rolls for the office. Immediately when I walked in, something felt off, but I ignored it. Anyone who knows me, has probably heard me talk about how great this place is at some point, so I was very disappointed with what I got. The cinnamon rolls looked different -- the frosting looked like a thick gravy, and the roll itself was hard. This was hard to believe since they've always been so consistently delicious. Has anyone else has a similar experience? I'm hoping that this was just an off-day, and that this isn't the new norm. So warm and homey feeling with delicious drinks and baked goods. 2024: Just moved out of San Diego and this will easily be one of my most-missed establishments! I remember when this place used to be a little farmers market back in the hay day, so I'm definitely native to my neighborhood. So bayou to see a nice little bakery to make shop here. This place is definitely a great cute shop to stop in, have a cup of coffee and treatb while laundry is being done, or after work out snack or just out on a walk with your Lil ones. Our second time here, I'm sure once my son starts school, this will be another stop we add on our walks. Which will be exciting. Greeted with a friendly face and a very welcoming atmosphere. Sticky roll is dangerous for me but sooooooo good I could eat the whole thing but let's try to share and split it 4 ways with the family which will be more than enough. For myself, I decided to be adventurous and order the banana muffin mocha. I've never heard of such a thing and wondered what the result would be like, and I was really pleased with it! I've lived in this community for 20 years and I've been coming to this coffee shop practically daily since it opened. I knew the original couple who opened the cafe and both men were wonderful- they created a cute neighborhood cafe where all of our diverse neighbors could meet to hangout in the mornings or get a quick something to go. My husband pointed out something depressing and I didn't believe it until today. They removed all their rainbows and LGBT support. We assumed it was because Pride Month had long passed and maybe they just put away the decorations overdue to be put away. But today I see they've taken down the sticker on the door that symbolized this was a supportive business. It's sad to see this place change with the new ownership. UPDATE: Thanks for responding, Qui. As one of our few Serra Mesa businesses, this place is important to me. Simply putting a LGBT decal back on your window shows that we are important to you. Cute little bakery / coffee shop. I ordered the coffee cake muffin which was HUGE! I am not complaining at all, I quite enjoyed that the muffin was a generous portion. I was munching on it thru out the day and still had some left over for breakfast the following day. Looking forward to picking up a sweet treat here on my way to work again! All right, I want to give a little update to this place because my last experience I had there yesterday was honestly so awkward and uncomfortable. I know the guy working the front desk is probably young and new, but they definitely shouldn't have him in a customer service role. He seemed flustered, angry and annoyed with everybody every time we would ask him a question or we needed help he would sigh really loud like as if he was annoyed with us he had zero patience and definitely need some training on customer service. I know it's just a little gig and I work customer service too so I understand that being young makes you inexperienced, but if I had ever acted like that towards any customer , I would've lost my job. I still really love the food and the pastries are amazing but I would really reconsider some training with customer service because good customer service is like 80% of the reason that people come back to any establishment. The food isn't so good that I'm going to put up with being treated poorly while I'm there. read more
