My food was very bland...no flavor or seasoning at all. My potatoes were burned & tasted like grease. There were flies EVERYWHERE!

Tucson got lucky with the opening of Black Bear Diner's 100th diner! The food is freshly made with great attention to presentation. You get real homemade food not pulled out of the freezer flavor! Breakfast Lunch and Dinner served all day with such a variety in selection and price it is good for everyone. The staff is very friendly and all seemed very happy to be working there which says a lot about an establishment! Highly recommend you come hungry as you leave with the I shouldn't have had that last bite but I couldn't stop myself kind of meal! Last time we were there it was great last night though my husband and I had the same sides but he had ribs instead. We got home and he was violently ill. The kids and I didn't get sick. This surprised me because my husband has a strong stomach. I remember the ribs smelled off like they were old but were covered BBQ sauce so for some it may be hard to tell. I'm really sensitive to smells. Everything else was good it's really a hit or miss place. I would say their breakfast food, sandwiches, and country fried items are good but be careful with the meat items. read more

This is new to Tucson and is really a nice atmosphere inside. Very clean and well decorated in a country bear theme. We were greeted and seated very quickly with no wait. The menu is very diverse, everything from breakfast to dinner. Even has a lighter portion for those with a smaller appetite. I had the slow roasted pot roast, came with salad, large corn muffin, pot roast and cooked vegetables (which were fresh). Portions were large enough to take some home for later. There is no happiness without waiting for it. You can expect a waiting period of about a half an hour. Meanwhile a good look told me it truly is a restaurant for all and casual is it's name. Families on a Friday nite and of all ages. After all it is a Bears den of action and indeed the captives are all dressed in black. This was of course the first time visit in person but not the first to order from them. They have a really excellent take-out service. They will have for you. The time is less than you think as they acomadate every possible need that takeout allows. Found it complete and with good taste. The Diner is a conventional design. The decor is with its little friends hanging around and you also can buy Daddy , Mommy and Baby (s) just ask about them at reservation desk.Every thing on the menu can be ordered on take out or sit down. Comfortable seating I have been told and it looks that there is ample table space too. Dinners have large portions and even larger Dinnerware as well. I was well received with all the best posable care and decorum that anyone should expect. The food was ample and good taste and large proportions to satisfy anyone. This of course include bears black,Grizzly Kodac,or Polar. I know that I will suggest the next time my pack meets we will go there. The only way is to go there and get a meal. I don't always do this but I live in the neighborhood so it's nothing to order over the phone and pick it up there. No waiting if they sent it in when you call. So they are still pretty new so maybe they are trying to work out some kinks but our experience was not that great. The environment is very 1990 with lots of retainer walls that seperate that the room up and black bear stuff hanging and silly suspenders the servers have to where which is okay if this was 20 years ago. The server was nice but had no menu knowledge so she had a hard time getting the order in. They weren't that busy and our food still took over 30 minutes and it was mediocre at best. The biscuit was microwaved so it was chewy and my over easy eggs were brown and they did not have any running yolk. Another weird thing was the server came and asked if we wanted any desert to go which I thought was kind of odd because why wouldn't we want to have our desert there. I thought the food was great! I had pot roast. The vegetables and salad were very fresh and the pot roast was tender with no fat. My friend ordered one of their salads and asked for avocado instead of chicken. They were happy to comply and were very generous with the avocado. I got the smaller plate. It was more than enough and very reasonably priced. I was surprised to see some less than 5-star reviews. They haven't been open all that long and are probably still working out all the kinks. We went there at 4:30 and by the time we left, people were overflowing into the parking lot. How bad could it be if there were that many people waiting?! I discovered Black Bear Diner several years ago, while on the way to a camping trip... been eating there ever since. Hearty food, well-cooked, with many items for just about anyone's taste! I have found the same quality in each of the diners we've visited. Recipes are apparently adhered-to! Our favorite is the Pesto Turkey sandwich on a warm, soft Chibata roll. I have mine without the lettuce, but it comes with melted Swiss cheese, tomatoes, and a wonderful Pesto aioli slathered all over it....OMG, YUM, YUM, YUM! I had yet to be able to try their yummy looking individual pies (chocolate, coconut) as I'm so full from my main meal. Next time! read more

We first ate and their location in Yuma and it still fails to disappoint. The food is delicious!! In particular the Corned beef hash. It's not the usual mush from a can. It's slow roasted brisket goodness especially when accompanied by the red potatoes. The biscuits are a meal unto themselves. And don't forget to add some Papa Bear hot sauce. I've only been here a couple of times -- once to pick up takeout lunch, then today for breakfast. Both times, the service has been very friendly and very on-the-ball, and the food has been quite good. The decor is kitschy and makes me feel like I'm in a 1960s "family restaurant," as they used to be called, somewhere in Minnesota, but with a whole lot more diversity in staff and clientele. I think this will be our new go-to breakfast place, now that Welcome Diner (where we stopped earlier) proved not to be welcoming at all, and Baja Cafe has become too loud and busy and the quality of the food has deteriorated. read more

First time here, I had the western burger and friend had the gobbler. Burger was pretty good, tho the bbq sauce was pretty flavorless. I ask for rare and it was cooked properly. Didn't care much for the home made potato chips they were cold and flavorless too. My friend did love the gobbler, and had the potato salad and said it was good. For dessert we had the molten lave cake, with ice cream. It was pretty darn good. They were out of blackberry cobbler. Probably will come back, to try other things. We have tried Black Bear Diner a couple of times in other locations - happy we now have one in Tucson. Stopped by for a late morning weekday breakfast. My goto breakfast is scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and wheat toast - going with the same at Black Bear. The breakfast came - wow, a large plate of food, you could maybe share one breakfast! All tasted great - especially the crispy, smoky, bacon! You won't go home hungry from Black Bear Diner! This is one of the best breakfast platters I have had anywhere. The food is very consistent from location to location as this breakfast was virtually the same as what I had at another Black Bear in another city. I would try this place again BUT I wouldn't order the pot roast again. It was way too fatty.and.it came out less than luke warm. The flavor was there and it was tender, but I can't look past the fat. The chicken fried steak was good, but Village Inn's is better. The batter was thick yet not crispy. The a waitress was pleasant. The fat man running the pass was VERY loud and was to the point of annoyance. But we will give it another shot. read more

First time coming here! Cute place ordered my kids food first while I scoped out the menu ordered my food 10 min later.. well I ended up getting my food first and waited an additional 10 min for my kids food so there was no point in ordering theirs first .. also the chicken tenders I ordered for my kids were rock hard. The waitress did say the tenders weren't cooked all the way so they had to re fry them ...... the chicken fried steak was amazing tho !! Called the establishment asking about the status of a job application, the manager was extremely rude and said "yeah its the lunch rush call back later I'm busy." I would have been fine with it if she would have kindly asked me to call back later, but clearly manners aren't her strong suit. I really like the cheeseburger salad so I've given Black Bear Diner a few tries but I won't be back. The service is just too slow and there are always uncleared tables next to mine and it just ruins the experience. When you are first seated, the hostess should ask you what you want to drink and at least you would have a beverage. My first visit to this diner today. The front staff members were friendly and welcoming. I was seated right away. My server Savannah handed me a newspaper. ? When she asked if I was finished looking at the menu, I asked where it was. She opened the newspaper. (That was the menu) The coffee was very good until a mosquito landed in it and drowned. Savannah took it away. They were kind enough not to charge me for the coffee or the mosquito. I waited about 20 minutes for my food. The eggs were overcooked to the consistency of boiled eggs. My server replaced them as soon as I told her. She was very friendly about it. The potatoes had a distinct chemical taste, like that of food that has been fried in re-used oil. Some were undercooked. I left them. The biscuits were very large and beautiful but had no flavor. I spread the whipped butter on. A man sitting at the table next to mine found hair in his breakfast. The server apologized and replaced the meal right away. She was very kind about it. The staff were very busy and hustling to please the picky customers (like me). They were very kind. Sadly, I won't be going back or recommending it to anyone. I wish them well. read more

Used to be a frequent customer, no more, have instituted personal boycott. Wife ordered dish with fruit bowl, I ordered eggs Benedict lightly poached. Getting waitress to give order was effort. Eventually plates served with no fruit, later my fruit. Never saw waitress until lengthy wait for bill. My eggs were poached solid When she did show up the errors were described, got a "sorry about that" turned and left without giving bill. Then appeared with wife's fruit, which by then was refused. Then got the old "I'll get the manager". Right. The stall worked. No manager, no bill. Went to register to get bill. It appeared then. While signining charge slip she passed by the kitchen and all but hollered, in very insolent manner "Have a nice day" I called Corporate, had a nice conversation with a marketing manager making a recommendation they get a store manager would knew how to hire a a real cook and decent wait staff. read more

I went here for a fundraiser party with a large group of women and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is inviting with their adorable decor of (what else?!?!) bears! Everywhere! Service was great, food was absolutely delicious. I had the eggs Benedict with some amazing hash browns, but almost everyone else had something off the lunch menu and was very happy. We arrived at the Diner at 7:30 PM for dinner. We waited for at least 5 minutes. No one greeted us. I finally sought out a worker. She said they would have to clean a table to seat us. Looking around, there were people at only 3 tables. All other tables were still dirty from other diners, but there were a lot of them. Walking toward the dining area, we noticed that the floor was very dirty. We decided not to wait for a table and left after telling the server why. We were very disappointed. read more
