We came here before a concert because he recommended it, & was meeting him for dinner with friend's & couldn't get out of it. I'll give credit where it's due. The staff was amazing. Super attentive, friendly, and the ambiance was great. Easily a 10 out of 10 for service and vibe. Another clue the food was going to be awful was when I asked the waiter for recommendations and he just gave me a blank stare, like even he was trying to say, "don't eat here, no flavor." I should have known. But the food was a huge miss. Everything is overpriced, and they nickel and dime you for everything, even sauces. I ordered fajitas, and they came with broccoli, zucchini, and squash. That is not a fajita mix. Where are the onions and bell peppers? I don't know what the owner is going for here, but this isn't Mexican food. On top of that, 18 dollars for guacamole and chips? For what? I honestly don't understand how people hype this place up. It comes with two enchiladas of your choice, rice, and fried black beans. - Suizas w/ Chicken (topped with green sauce & sour cream): 4/5 I think this one was slightly better than the Rancheras Enchilada w/ chicken. We were a group of 10 that went to have Valentine's dinner here last night. A little about myself, I'm Latina and not a picky/finicky eater...that being said, the chips, salsa, guacamole and queso fundido were good. We all ordered different dishes. The waiter was not friendly, never cracked a smile, seemed to be in a bad mood. So I ordered the camarones Xóchitl. The beans weren't bad and that was the only item on my plate that was ok. The sauce on the prawns was terrible, the Cole slaw tasted weird and the rice was flavorless and mushy. Someone else's crab enchiladas was cold and she was told after she brought to waiter's attention that that's how it was supposed to be although there was no mention of it on the menu. Others in our group were also not happy with their food or said it was just ok. The manager tried to make it right and was very nice but it was too late. We had to leave unhappy with our Valentines dinner. And to top it all off the food is pretty pricy for what it is. The waiter never came to check on us to see if we wanted another drink or water. Someone asked for more chips and he never brought them. Then they still had the nerve to charge 20% tip. Oh and did I mention the waiter took our order twice. I heard great things about this place and my daughter just moved to Pleasanton so I made a reservation to eat here for Easter. Upon arrival I learned there was a prix fixe menu which was essentially a buffet. Our reservation was for 2 PM and after we were seated we were clued in that they were shutting the place down as we were being seated. We thought we should go but the servers showed us the buffet and encouraged us to grab a plate and eat. This buffet was HORRIBLE. Cold pancakes, sausage that was cold to the touch, several bins of food empty or missing. It was the worst buffet ever! Like the free buffet at the local Holiday Inn Express would blow this thing away. When I got the bill they charged us $45 per person which is straight up robbery. We wanted to still enjoy our Easter brunch and attempted to have a conversation at the table while we sipped our drinks but the servers kept grabbing our plates and cups and clearly wanted us out of there. So we arrived at 2PM for our 2PM reservation and were out of there by 3PM and down close to $300. My advice would be to not go to the place as they don't seem to be aware of the product they are serving and open appointments for time slots that they don't care to serve warm food in. read more

This restaurant is so beautiful from the outside that we were very excited to try it out, but unfortunately the whole visit fell very short of our expectations. We came for dinner around 6pm on a Friday and were seated inside because it was hot outside. However, apparently they don't use the AC inside the restaurant, so it was almost hotter inside than if we had sat outside. It was an uncomfortable humid feeling. The service was pretty slow throughout. The food and drinks were subpar. The mango margarita pitcher was good, but nothing special for $42. The ceviche appetizer was pretty good, but small portion for the price. Lastly, both our main courses were awful. My chicken mole enchiladas were so dry and flavorless. I removed the tortilla (which I could barely cut through) and only ate the chicken. My husband ordered the Agave bowl and none of the flavors sat well and didn't taste authentic. Our meal was pretty expensive but we left so disappointed. I would not visit again and wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. Always consistently good! Customer service is stellar. There's a discrepancy with prices on the menu on OpenTable when viewed through an iPhone versus a Samsung phone. We found that out when we received the bill. We brought it to their attention and the hostess and manager fixed it for us, no questions asked. Blue agave margarita ($11): This had triple sec and herradura silver tequila - I loved it! You can get a margarita pitcher for at least $38, which I think is so worth it even between 2 people. Their fruit margarita pitchers are $42, and I'm eyeing that next. Mole poblano ($26.50): Okay, this is a massive plate. Husband for size reference in my photo - like wow!! He thought this was delicious, and the dark sauce was so unique that he would come back again for it. Enchiladas (pick 2, $23): I got the suizas enchilada (cheese, green sauce, sour cream) and the enjococado enchilada (the 100 year old family recipe featured in a magazine). Both were really tasty, but it's hard to stomach paying this much for a plate I can get around the corner for half that price. This was a spontaneous choice when our original spot for dinner was booked for the night. They have a beautiful, large, covered outdoor area that's perfect for summer dinners with family and/or friends. I ordered the shrimp and crab enchiladas; it definitely hit the spot. I got the jalapeño margarita and my cousin got the mango margarita. The drinks could have been a tad bit stronger; I felt like they were a little watered down. The food was delicious, and the servers would routinely come around to ask if we wanted a refill on the chips and salsa. The mole tasted ok but the chicken was dry and tough. The beans were puréed. The salsa's were tasty but the chips tasted like cheap bagged chips. For the price point, it was disappointing. The worst part was when the plates were placed on the table, they were so hot, I burned my fingers. I know plates can be hot sometimes but these were outrageously hot and no warning was given. Had a dinner date at Blue Agave last night and made reservations in advance. They were not overly busy so we could have walked in with no wait. The outdoor seating ambiance is nice and hummingbirds were a fun addition to the setting. We ordered drinks and was promptly provided with chips and two salsas. We placed our order - husband ordered steak and I ordered the bowl with shrimp. When our meal was brought out, my bowl had steak, so I had to send it back. This meant our timing was off on eating tougher since I had to wait for my meal to be remade. My husband liked his steak and my shrimp bowl was ok. The chips here go hard!!! Complimentary first basket + individual dipping salsa (per 4 guests). Delicious, thick crunchy corn chips. Salsa is good too, a mild flavor with a little kick. We ended up getting additional basket ($2.00). Additional salsa is $2.50 but we didn't get any extra. Had the Enjococado ($24.50) which is their famous chicken recipe. The chicken was advertised as tender but was not quite as tender as I'd hoped, though the sauce was pretty good (gave me Indian Vindaloo sauce vibes). A little overpriced in my opinion. The peach margaritas were yummy but a little confusing... we ordered two "pitchers" but noticed that the pitcher was never full when the waiter would come to pour our drinks. There were 5 of us, so a pitcher seemed to equate to 5 semi-full glasses with a fair amount of ice in each glass (see photo). My party decided on the outdoor dining area, which featured live piano music and a female vocalist at noon. The ambiance was very cute, however, it does get very hot and can feel uncomfortable in the outdoor dining area, despite the shade in the afternoon (it was 95 and I was sweating). Decided to take a trip to downtown Pleasanton do a walk about and catch dinner. Went to the Blue Agave and sat outside. The Restaurant was very busy but we were greeted and seated immediately. Our server Rigo was personable and full Of great suggestions. With his assistance we had refreshing cocktails and an excellent dinner. Everything came at the right temperature and quickly. Service and food was spot on. Cocktails were a Paloma and pina colada. Both were spot on. We ordered the Enchiladas with salsa verde, black beans, rice and flan for dessert. It's located in the heart of downtown Pleasanton operating out of a Victorian-era home. The front outside patio area hugs the street with large palm trees and a brick wall from the neighboring business. The décor outside is open, dotted with Mexican metal craft figurines however the overhead sagging tarps look dank, taking away from the ambiance and the twenty-plus propane heaters are severely in need of replacement with their melted, disfigured screens which in a way parallels the cuisine. Updating the patio with beautiful umbrellas would make a nice change. I've been dining at the Blue Agave since it opened in 1997. The menu hasn't changed. Initially, it was expressive and original but sadly now it's badly in need of an update. Over the past few years, I haven't gone back for a lot of the reasons shared here. Last night's visit sealed the deal on why it's been so long. I'm in no hurry to go back. The service is also in desperate need of an overhaul. I got the feeling no one was in charge to oversee quality. Occasionally the servers could be heard quarreling amongst themselves within earshot of the guests. Our server Hector was distracted, unengaging, and impersonal. When asked if they had a list of specialty cocktails he was befuddled as if he didn't know what it meant. The service continued to disappoint, with the lack of check in's, "how are you"? etc. When my martini arrived, it was a half to three-quarters of an inch from the brim. The olives were mushy. Ordering was another misstep. We ordered the Enchiladas Del Mar advertised on the menu as having Bay Shrimp. We expressed our displeasure with the Bay Shrimp asking for a larger, different shrimp substitute. Hector argued they do not use Bay shrimp despite what the menu showed. Later, he skipped one of the guests when ordering. It took some time for us to flag someone down to have him return. Pros: I liked the Tortilla soup. It was rich and favorable with almost an enchilada red sauce consistency versus the loose chicken broth type. When the food arrived, it was lukewarm, lacking flavor. The only highlights were the fresh ingredients of the poblano, onions, and mole covered up a multitude of sins. Throughout the evening the restaurant was fifty to three-quarters occupied. By 9:15 pm on a Saturday, it quickly turned into a ghost town. For the few of us remaining, we were surprised to see and hear the staff roll trash cans through the dining area with wobbly wheels and tremendous sound. When it comes to pricing, the Blue Agave is greatly overpriced due to the poor food quality, tired menu, and weak service. Our bill came to $63.00 a person without a tip. All in all, I want Blue Agave to succeed and hope this review will lead to positive change. At this point, I give it a thumbs down. read more

I really enjoyed the ambiance that comes with outdoor dining. There was live music when we came on a thursday night and it was surprisingly a bit crowded. I did walk through the restaurant to use the bathroom and I have to say the indoor dining experience wouldhv been top notch its so nice inside! When it comes to the food I appreciate the complimentary chips and salsa. It was nice that we each got our own mini salsa to minimize sharing. We got enchiladas and fondue for the table. The fondue was absolutely delicious (although small portions) . The enchiladas were just o-k. The only thing that would come back for is the ambiance, not the food. So I was here a few years back with my local friends. First off, the atmosphere and the cleanliness is top as well as their servers and cooks. Where I have an issue here is the pricing. It to me was outrageous that I paid 50.00 for this plate of food, 1 beer and the tip. Really? I mean since when has true Mexican food been so outrageous in pricing? And lets just say, I had a moderate dinner. On top of that, being a cook when I asked for a breast of chicken I was shocked at what I got. It was more like a half breast that had been pounded to look bigger. BTW, I posted my friends soup" , not part of my meal! The cooking was fine, my issue is the pricing. I think the management really needs to think this over. Also no follow up with messages we left. Its ok, I do not think I will be back. Nonetheless, I would not hesitate in telling people about it.
