It was National Chicken Wing Day(July 29th). Apparently there's such thing, so we had to go hunt for chicken wings to celebrate that holiday. These are Korean inspired chicken wings, super crunchy. It's air-dried, hand dipped, & double fried. I was starring at the promo video of some guy's beautiful tattooed arm dropping chicken in the deep fryer in slow motion. I'm sure it's something cool to watch while you're stoned also. The chicken wings are dry, the flavor comes with your choice of sauces which I believe there's 4 to choose from and you get 1 for every 5 wings. Try not to go during rush hours because it's a small location with limited seating and you'll want to eat these fried chicken while they're still hot! Besides wings, there's sandwiches and sides. By the end of the meal your gonna need more than a couple napkins to clean up the mess. If you are the type of person to go out for some chicken wings and you decide to hit up a Korean fried chicken place then you already doing many things right. Bok a Bok specializes in frying up some good chicken, either in wing form or to be used in one of their many sandwiches. When comparing Korean friend chicken to other types you normally notice a pretty thin crust with the Korean version. Bok a Bok however makes a pretty thiCC crust for being Korean friend chicken. The wings come with no sauce to be accompanied by some dipping sauces, with my preferred choices being the: spicy chili and the sesame one. Heads up on the spicy sauce, the name sounds waaay more intimidating than how hot the sauce actually is. Personally however I like my wings tossed in sauce instead of having them dipped after, but this comes down to personal preference. The wings were solid and I enjoyed them thoroughly, but since they didn't take my preferred form they weren't the best wings I have ever had. The sandwich was surprising amazing, I had the Umami BBQ Chicken and the chicken was generous in both its crunchy crust and size of cut. Normally we get fried chicken from Sodam Chicken, decided to try this spot tonight and dang.... Super disappointed. We got the 20 pc OG wings and even without any sauce the chicken was too sweet. The sauces themselves were also too sweet. The batter was not very light and crispy, it was very dense and unsatisfying to bite into. The tater tots were too salty, the slaw was watery and did not have enough flavor and the biscuit was a bit dry. Everything was a miss for us. I love wings, and I remember having Bok A Bok a few years back, but don't quite remember what I thought of it. I had the urge to grab wings for dinner today, so I thought I'd give them another shot. AMBIANCE There's not much space in here given that it's just tucked behind Neumos. Take out is your best bet. There's anime and B-roll of their food playing on the TV screens inside the restaurant. FOOD We ended up ordering for three tonight, so there was a lot to unpack here. First, the wings. I thought these were pretty disappointing. The chicken didn't taste like it was marinated or brined before frying, and the only seasoning to be found was a light dusting of their house powder which didn't have much of a taste. To be fair, it does come with two dipping sauces, but I think a wing should be able to stand on its own first. The Umami BBQ was interesting. I thought they had given me a hot sauce because of how red it was, but it's actually just the BBQ. The Soy Garlic was a hit for me. Great balance of sweet and savory. The Kimchi Mac & Cheese was solid. No complaints here, I appreciate the use of shell pasta over traditional macaroni. The kimchi flavor was subtle, and I wish it had a little more of a kick to it, but I'd eat it again. The fries were pretty standard, didn't think much of them. Again dusted with their house powder that didn't have much of a flavor. The Spicy Chicken Burger was solid, but hard to eat. The giant thigh filet dwarfed the bun, and it was a little messy to eat. Again, I think the chicken meat itself could have had more flavor like the wings, but it was really juicy. The Dirty Tots were my favorite out of the bunch. Great flavor, and how can you go wrong with loaded tots? OVERALL I'd say there are better options for wings out there in Seattle. It's not a bad play, but I don't think Bok A Bok warrants being a regular. I wish the chicken itself had more flavor, if you're here, get the Dirty Tots or Fries. read more

So dip chicken or cooked in sauce?? Everyone who loves dip tells me to come to bok a bok! Let's talk about their chicken. The batter is so very thick! I basically had to eat off the super crunchy coating of second skin to get any bite of chicken. There seems to be little to no seasoning flavor on the pieces, only salt and pepper. All of the taste comes from your choice in sauces. Now ranking sauces. Personally I really did enjoy the house ranch sauce. It's slightly different from regular bottled store bought ranch somehow. The other sauces are all alright, they seem very basic. For a side I got kimchi Mac and cheese. I didn't like this at all. The cheese is so runny it drips off the noodles. Plus the kimchi flavor is almost nonexistent. I think I had only one piece of kimchi cabbage in my cup. Overall I wouldn't get this again. For the shop itself. I definitely recommend take out. I love their fish sauce caramel. Wonderful balance of sweet and umami, Their strips are huge and stay wonderfully crisp! I'd say my biggest complaint is when you order the wet rubs, it's more like a wet sprinkle. Not much sauce at all, barely enough to lightly coat most of the chicken you order. That also includes when you specifically request your chicken extra saucey/extra wet. Maybe the option should be, potentially damp rub? She got 5 wings (they gave her 6 ), I got the salad, and we shared the tots. The salad was phenomenal - the crispies paired with the apple & jicama (?) gave one hell of a combination of textures that provided a pleasurable experience. The chicken, although not seasoned, provided a really good vessel for the sauce, which was the perfect consistency for a proper dunking & coating. This is a nice fried chicken spot. It is a korean fried chicken spot and I am not sure what they do differently, but I think they have their own frying technique (maybe Im wrong, dont quote me on this). They are sometimes inconsistent and pretty hit or miss though. Id recommend the honey garlic flavor, which has a lot of honey and spices, but I dont think the garlic flavor is particularly pronounced. read more

Quality fried chicken in downtown Capitol Hill. This place is seriously too good for this location. I dismissed it as a fast food popcorn chicken joint but came to realize it's made fresh to order and with some ingenuity. They were visited by Guy Fieri and in case that doesn't explain enough for you don't worry because there's written explanation all over the place. They even have a TV playing the episode on repeat. You'll soon learn that it's a chef who experiments successfully with his food. And that the place has a lineup of heavy comfort food hitters. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. Coming from NYC long ago my place was Bonchon! The Bonchon that came out here was not the same... Bok Bok was a great find! I got the dirty taters , rice bowl and OG wings. The coating is super crisp and not oily! My only issue was everything was a bit salty. The kimchi Mac and cheese had no kimchi? Other than that I will be back for a bowl again. I've been here several times since it opened. The chicken has consistently been fantastic. The outside is always super crispy and the inside is always tender and moist. It also stays perfect through transport, somehow (the last time we ordered, we kept it on the counter for 45 minutes and the batter was still crispy and the chicken still tender). The batter is not as flavorful as the batter from other establishments (e.g. Popeye's), but the chicken comes with sauces, all of which are pretty good. My personal favorite is the "bok a bok ranch". The price is very reasonable for the portion size. Also, somehow, the chicken reheats very well. Be aware: when we scheduled a pickup on Doordash, it was processed like an on-demand order (food was ready immediately and not at scheduled time). One downside is that they could give more sauce. I really can't say enough good things about this place! I think I've been to every location now since when I go visit friends and they ask where to have lunch I say this place. Lol Chicken is always warm and crispy and doesn't taste like it's been under heat lamps forever , good seasoning, the sauces are really great and they also never forget to pack your order correctly which is nice.
