However, their cheese sticks and rugelach are just ok, and their almond croissant was extremely disappointing - not at all flakey, and the custard filling did not have the right almond flavor, it just tasted like sugar. I lived in Paris for 17 years and this bakery rivals the very best over there. There's a reason their chocolate babka is legendary. It's a dangerous item to have in close proximity as it's consumption is exceedingly difficult to control. However, it is their tunisian tuna sandwich that haunts my dreams. The bread is made with olive oil and a generous sprinkling of coarse salt. The tuna in olive oil is surrounded by preserved lemons, potatoes, olives and a smear of harrissa. It's so simple and yet truly sublime. So many other places make forgettable tuna sandwiches but Breads reminds you just how amazing it can be. read more

I can't stop thinking about this place. I was working nearby and my co-workers suggested this place. I can't say I was a fan of their sandwiches. But I am a fan of their chocolate babka. The chocolate babka is made with Nutella and chocolate chips. It is a puffy, flaky and very buttery. They had a promotion that was going on when I went, it was 2 for $22. But I had to contain myself and only get one loaf. I now regret not getting 2 babka's. Besides the chocolate babka, they also have a raisin one. Great food , but horrible costumer service .Every time they over charge ,so pay attention what are you paying for. The prices are high already you don't want to be over charge. Even if they promise refund it actually never gets back to your account unless you call your bank to cancel transaction. Happened to me so many time that I have to give up going there. I don't know what is the real issue there ,but to me it is stilling money from clients.!!!!!! I don't call it mistake it is happen too often. As I said in my previous review, I wanted to try the chocolate babka and the chocolate chip cookie. Now that I have, I believe Breads deserves 5 stars. The babka is amazing!!!! The chocolate is so high quality and delicious. The bread itself is quite moist and flavorful. The chocolate chip cookie had the same excellent chocolate creating an excellent chocolate chip cookie iteration. I'd consider this one of the better ones in the city, for sure. Breads has never disappointed me. Everything from their actual bread, to pastries, to cute little sandwiches are always so incredibly amazing. I particularly adore the almond croissant (with a latte is a perfect breakfast). Another favorite of mine are the cereal loaf and the raisin walnut bread (they taste great toasted and lathered with some butter!). And last but not least I have to talk about the cheesecake. Let me tell you I Have had dreams about this cheesecake. Its an incredibly fluffy vanilla cheesecake and the crust is moist and crunch (i don't know how they do it!) and has a slight lemon flavor to it. It is the best cheesecake I have ever had. When we got there, there was chocolate babka everywhere! You can try a sample by the cashier before buying the chocolate babka. It was so delicious, I wanted to buy all the chocolate babka in the store. They sell chocolate babka for $12.95. You can buy 2 chocolate babka for $20 instead. We only brought one because it was only two of us. The next time, I come back, I might buy chocolate babka as gifts for friends and family. I came in to this place craving something sweet while walking around union square the other day and OMG, the rugelach (I think that's what it was called), its a divine little pastry that just melts in your mouth! It reminded me of a mini croissant laced with some chocolate spirals that was just the right amount of chocolate. I like chocolate but not too much where I am feeling like I am eating chocolate cake. I was overjoyed when this bakery opened as their Danishes reminded me of the ones I had eaten as a child in Copenhagen. I took friends there as well and savored each bite. This morning I bought 2 marzipan cookies and was dismayed to find that the taste was strange and their was no marzipan to be found at all in the cookies. What happened? Holy God! I stumbled upon this place and was blown away by how cute it is inside, and how fresh it smells inside. The selection is so tempting, it is an absolutely brilliant place to visit. Went in at 10:30 AM on a Sunday Morning. A croissant was recommended by a friend, so I decided to pick one up from the shelf on the wall, but was disappointed by what I got. The taste was not bad, but for some reason, it just tasted old. Not stale, but like it has been sitting out for a few hours. The outside was no longer crisp and flaky, but soft and floppy. I would expect that a bakery would have hot fresh croissants coming out all day, not just make one batch in the morn and let them sit out. Staff was friendly, and an olive-cheese stick was alright, but the croissant really killed my sunday buzz here. The babka can last for a week, you can rewarm it at home and still tasted great. This is a review of the "restaurant portion" of Breads Bakery. Yup everyone loves the breads and pastries. In the section beyond the bakery are tables and a sandwich, soup and salad service. A local deli closed down, so I thought, hey, they breads are good, let me try the food. Well prices were a little high... and i was thinking... okay, I'll try SOUP. Ordered the vegetable soup -- it was NOTHING special at all. Broth very little flavor, mushy vegetables, and a scant quantity of vegetables for at $7.00 cup of soup (maybe a bowl-size but container was not full). *I was completely surprised that a small roll didn't even come with it -- at a bakery.* And, I stupidly ordered an ice tea, which brought the total for a soup and a drink to over $11. This wasn't table service, it was a take-out counter, with tables available. Ice tea was okay... but it was priced at over $3.00. I left... hungry.... unsatisfied.... one the way back to work picked up a bagel... I was recommended their chocolate babka by a friend, so after months of hearing about it, I finally decided to stop by and try it. I think thirteen bucks is a bit steep for one loaf (or you can get two for $20) but it was pretty worth it. It's even better when you warm it up at home so the chocolate gets all gooey and melty. I like eating it with some banana (it's kind of like eating a chocolate banana crepe). I also tried their gouda cheese straw; it reminded me of Brazilian cheese bread, which I absolutely love. Lastly the potato bureka. I had never heard of a bureka until I came to Breads Bakery. Flaky pastry w/ a mix of sesame seeds on the outside, filled with creamy, perfectly seasoned mashed potato. Wow!! The chocolate Bobka here is fantastic. It is in a loaf and is light and chocolaty and a little buttery. Unbelievable. The chocolate Rugelach is also a win win. Upon entering, we were greeted by a very nice young woman who gave us the lay of the land. We scoped out a table and sat down and immediately one of us ordered the delicious temptations. We also ordered coffee which you get toward the back of the store. The baked goods are in the front before you get to the tables to sit. Please note that this review is based entirely on their chocolate bobka bread. For all I know, everything else on their menu tastes like baby diapers, but holy moly, is the bobka bread amazing. While the outside is hardened by a chocolate crust, the inside is gooey heaven. I bought one loaf and ate 3/4 of it before I even knew what happened. If this sublime treat is any indication, then I'm sure Bread's has plenty of other amazing stuff to offer. But if you want guaranteed desert heaven, then go with the chocolate babka. read more
