I really wanted to like Buen Provecho because it's in a great spot and the staff themselves are genuinely friendly and accommodating. But after multiple visits, it's clear there are serious management issues that are dragging the place down. One visit (a Sunday with my girlfriend), the restaurant side was a mess. Our food took forever, and when it finally came out, it was wrong. On top of that, the floor was extremely greasy and slippery -- genuinely unsafe. We told both our server and the manager, twice, and nothing was done. My girlfriend eventually went up to the manager directly, and he barely responded. He came out with a rag and half-heartedly wiped the floor, but it was still slick. We were honestly worried someone was going to slip and get hurt. It didn't feel like anyone in charge actually cared. Then last night, I sat at the bar by myself. Again, the staff -- especially the bartender -- were great. Friendly, attentive, and clearly trying their best. But the same pattern showed up. When things got busy, everything fell apart. Everything came out slow -- the beef cheek bowl I ordered first, the burger I ordered later, the chips, and even the complimentary burger patty they provide for dogs. Each time, my bartender had to go back to the kitchen to figure out what was going on and personally bring the food out. I asked to speak to a manager. The bartender went to get one... and no one ever showed up. That's the core issue here: there is no visible, engaged management. No one checking on guests, no one stepping in when things go sideways, no accountability. The staff is left to clean up the mess, and they're doing the best they can, but they shouldn't have to carry that alone. It honestly feels like the place is leaning too heavily on a bar-first crowd -- assuming people will come in, drink, and overlook everything else. I've seen what happens when places take that approach in areas like Belmont Shore -- things can get sloppy fast, and over time it leads to rowdiness and fights. That's not the direction any place should be heading. I've worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade, and what I'm seeing here is clearly a management problem. The potential is there. The location is great. The staff is solid. But until leadership steps up and fixes the operational issues, it's going to keep falling short. This was my first time ever trying beef cheeks, and it was 100% on her recommendation. If you love oxtails, you'll get it immediately: same tender, pull-apart texture with deep, rich flavor. She made a believer out of me. We also ordered flautas and a carne asada plate, and everything was on point--fresh, flavorful, and cooked right. The drinks didn't miss either... especially the watermelon something Megan put me on (I don't even remember the name, I just know it was dangerous in the best way). It's good, but let's dive deeper into the overall experience and what it provides for the Long Beach food scene. Let's talk about the food and drinks first. Everything I got to eat was pretty good. Queso Fundido - This was a great starter for the table. The salsa macha here is really good. Short Rib Mole - So tender and flavorful! My favorite part was the hominy grits. I think the big hunk of meat that they give you is worth the price. I wish the plate was adorned more deliberately with the pickled veggies.  Arroz Con Leche -  These were delicious. It is very rich and decadent, but the berry blend balances everything out very well. Churro Doughnuts - These are a sweet treat for sure. They are very heavy, dense churros. They are a dessert if you have a lot of room left, but they are delicious if you're not too full! Drinks on the other hand... were okay. The drinks look and sound exciting, but they're just missing a bit of refinement. It seems like the drink menus that Sherwood is collaborating on at local Long Beach restaurants are really just missing the mark, if you know you know. Prescription Strength - This is the cute drink that comes in the Dr Pepper can that you see all over Instagram. It is so cloyingly sweet and artificial tasting. It is very reminiscent of over-the-counter cough medicine, but perhaps that's what they were going for with the name. La Nina Fresa - Also had to get a non-alcoholic beverage just to make sure where the drinks are. This is good! Fresh strawberries, lots of milk and cream. It is very sweet, but that's just what the drink is. I think Buen Provecho has the food to make itself a good restaurant in the Long Beach food scene, but it's whether or not they can provide a space and build a culture that locals want to frequent. I want a restaurant where my server can talk to me at my table for too long to provide recommendations, not do a scripted table touch because they have half the restaurant to themselves with little to no support. These are things that guests can tell too, and it does affect whether we want to support businesses that build employee culture in this way. Why are managers not walking around to have conversations with guests at new openings to introduce yourself to the community? There's something about these new restaurants coming into Long Beach that want to lean out business operations by undervaluing their staff and undervaluing guest interactions because those are not directly responsible for profits. As real community members, we notice and it does affect whether we show up to support these businesses. read more

Great New Mexican food spot in the LBC. The ambiance inside is very welcoming and enjoyed the variety of music they had playing while dining. Menu is pretty diverse from seafood to brunch plates and everything in between. Also liked the variety of cocktails available as well as the option for many other regular favorites. We were served by Raul and he was amazing. Very helpful and friendly when it came to the drink options. Props for recommending the Jefe de jefes aguachile. FIRE! Been here three times. Not sure why. It's just conveniently there. The staff is genuinely lovely. But the food: Buen Provencho is a mayo kind of place. Mayo is vibe here. Everything arrives soft, sweet, and somehow already room temperature in spirit. If they feel like you don't like the meal, they give you some free chips that come buried under a cream sauce with pickled sweet stuff on top. You'll wonder to yourself "why" and feel intense sadness. The drinks lean syrupy. The smoked beef cheek burrito arrives soggy, which is a genuine tragedy because the beef cheek itself is the most interesting thing happening in this kitchen. Some chef clearly put real thought into it in the beginning, but then gave up on it midway like a deadbeat parent in someone's bad childhood. The smoked beef cheek bowl tasted like it was made by a person whose greatest fear is seasoning. Wings: fine. Tacos: fine. Fine kept appearing in my notes the way a word does when your brain has given up trying to be specific. This is exactly the right place to eat before a show when you want to be neither hungry nor stimulated. Ask for hot sauce. Accept that you will need more of it than they bring you. We sat down for our reservation and was greeted by our server, but he wouldn't return to take our order for over 20 minutes. That was enough time for me to walk and order takeout at the nearby Ammatoli. We ordered aguachile, steak tacos, fish tacos and a horchata. Their social media definitely made this place look great but it was mediocre. 1st off dining in and no chips or salsa for the table -come on even el torrito offers chip an salsa. 2nd I ordered aguachiles which came with pre cooked shrimp, chopped into chunks; those shrimp should have been butterflied with tons of red onion and cucumber & the tostada was the texture of styrofoam. Then my partner ordered enchiladas which were brought out in an appetizer sized skillet the tortillas were layered on top of each other probably the size of a quarter of a whole tortilla & that was the whole dish no rice or beans came with it we were told you have to order a side of rice or beans even for a main dish. Such a great Happy Hour deal without sacrificing the quality with watered down cocktails like some places do. Again the food was awesome! Wow... honestly this place was better than expected. We came here for my father in laws birthday brunch on Saturday. The expectations were tempered because it's one of those gimmicky spots that has a crazy amount of decorations all themed and a live mariachi singer basically doing upscale karaoke, but this place blew us away. Let's start with the service Ray the manager was amazing and Marissa our server was so attentive! We had a few problems with food but they both remediated it and resolved our issues immediately. We were checked on as much as I have been at fancy restaurants. Now to the food we ordered the salsas (6/10 needed more salt), guacamole(9/10), and flautas(7.5/10) we liked these but over all had hold outs on the potato's in the flautas from my wife while i liked them for appetizers. For our mains we ordered the beef cheek burrito (9/10 rice a tad over cooked but flavorful), carne asada burrito (8/10 tasty but rice was a bit over cooked), chilaquiles (6.5/10), short ribs (9/10), pozole (10/10 amazing taste and loved the beef with it). I tried everything and agreed with the ratings the individual who had it said. Honestly the food was very good. Only issue we had was with the first round of chilaquiles the food was cold like cold to the touch and sauce was crumbly from sitting cold and the beef cheek burrito had chocolate on it. I visited for drinks when they soft launched the previous spot and was shocked that it never fully opened. I'm glad the dust has settled.
