Every time I visit San Jose I ALWAYS try to stop by CA bake house - their croissants and egg tarts are just that great! They not only have regular standard egg tarts but also pandan and durian flavored ones (durian lovers rejoice!!) along with their pandan-cream filled croissants and ube-flavored cream as well! The choux pastries are also delicious though I recommend keeping it at room temperature instead of immediately storing it in the fridge if you plan to eat it later (that can change the consistency of the baked goods). Other than planning ahead and ordering way in advance so you can avoid the long lines, I definitely recommend this place to anyone who likes pandan, durian, or ube flavored desserts! :) read more

Aside from the restaurants, ice cream, and boba shops around Vietnam town, a bakery is a great addition to this plaza! I've been here a few times now with no bad experiences. The line may look like its long, but actually the line literally starts right at the door entrance and there are no customers allowed in during COVID. After you order it'll take at least around 5+ minutes to prepare as some of their stuff comes hot, but of course the wait also depends on how busy they are. KAYA CROISSANT(5/5): Hands down my favorite thing to get here. The croissant itself is flakey and the pandan filling smells so fragrant and taste exactly how it smells, it's super nostalgic for me! MOCHI CAKE(3.5/5): Great texture but I get a bit bored of it after a while, I definitely want to try the guava cheese or banana walnut flavor for this though because that sounds like it would be amazing. I also love that this comes warm. PORTUGESE EGG TARTS(4/5): This come hot every time and altogether it's eggy, sweet, and flakey which I enjoy. If you love egg tarts, you'll definitely love theirs here. PANDAN MILK BREAD(3/5): Looks like Hawaiian rolls and comes with 6 rolls for $6. When I got this I came at 3 pm(they close at 4 pm) so I might've gotten a batch more on the stale side, but I do definitely enjoy the center of the buns! If I'm not here early in the day next time though, I wouldn't get it. I definitely want to try more desserts off their menu as they are all at a reasonable price. OMG I love their baked goods! I recently stumbled upon this place from a local YouTuber - best recommendation ever! The line can get pretty long but do not fret - you have a choice to place an online order. What I did was go on their online site, place my order and ate around the plaza. After eating, my order was ready for pickup! This place is finally open and it's delicious. I had their portuguese egg tart and kaya croissant. The layers of the croissant were flaky and chewy. The pandan filling was sweet but not too sweat. A perfect combination with the flaky chewy croissant. The egg tart was custard and eggy. They offer a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on the egg tart if you request it (sounds bomb). I have been eyeing the Kaya croissants since they came out but haven't had as chance to try them until today. It is SO good! The creamy custard is piped down the middle of the croissant. I love how pronounced the pandan and coconut flavors are in the filling! It's also incredibly light but not airy like whipped cream. While the croissant dough is green in color, it just tastes like a normal butter croissant. But pair it with the Kaya filling and it's just perfect. I also got the Ube Taro croissant and even the croissant is purple! You can definitely taste the ube in the filling, but it is not as light as the Kaya croissant. Love this place for their mochi muffins- they are more affordable here than Third Culture Bakery and taste very similar imo :) The egg tarts are also good and they have a variety of other pastries/ bakery items. The taro and pandan pastry cakes are yummy. I'd skip on the durian waffle- it didn't have enough durian flavor for me. The pandan waffle was ok, but definitely need to eat right away when it's fresh or otherwise it gets soggy. I HIGHLY recommend all of these below: Durian Egg Tart ($3) - if you love durian, this is perfect for you!! There's actually pieces of actual durian at the bottom of the egg tart. I stopped by on a recommendation from a coworker for their pandan waffles. Initially, I got a bit confused because Apple Maps will route you to the opposite side of the building from this bakery, and it was only after checking Google Maps that I managed to find the front door. Being in the middle of Vietnam Town, it's not the easiest to drive to or to find parking. I managed to find a spot somewhat nearby and walked my way around. I came on a Sunday afternoon, and when I arrived there was a bit of a line out the door. I was told that there usually is, so this wasn't surprising. I was worried that it would be more than a 10-minute wait, and being the type that is horrible at waiting I decided to place my order online after not having moved up within the first few minutes. After placing my order I was given a time estimate of 20 minutes for preparation, but I reached the front of the line about five minutes thereafter. I informed the employee that I had placed an online order, was told it would be about five more minutes (10 minutes in advance of my pickup time), then proceeded off to the side to wait. Five minutes pass, then ten minutes pass, and I see other customers who had been behind me in line receiving their orders. At fifteen minutes past, I approach the desk to inquire. Turns out my order had been ready, just that nobody had been informed to give it to me. Unfortunately, not the best customer experience this time around. Pandan waffle: I took a bite as soon as I got back to my car. Pandan waffles really need to be consumed forthwith for the best experience, but it had already cooled to room temperature. Despite this, I thought it was nothing special, just alright. I did appreciate how it wasn't a soggy mess. Pandan coconut bread: This is heavenly! Growing up, it would be a treat when my mom would buy me coconut bun pastries from Asian bakeries. I imagine it would be even better to get a loaf that is fresh out of the oven and still warm, but I loved the texture and consistency of this bread. Definitely would buy again! Hojicha choux: Wasn't my favorite. The hojicha filling wasn't throughout the choux and I found it to be quite bitter. The choux themselves are known to be not so sweet, so a good option but not an option for myself again. Black sesame choux: The filling was throughout the choux, but again not so sweet. I did appreciate the texture of the filling, it had that authentic black sesame mouth feel, but not something I would personally choose again. Guava mochi cake: Is underrated, this was delicious. Sweeter than the choux, but not overly sweet, just perfect for me. The guava filling in the middle was fresh and the mochi cake was a lovely texture. I would get this again. Kaya croissant: I enjoyed more than the ube croissant. At first it struck me as a bit strange because a croissant is supposed to be warm whereas a custard filling is by all means supposed to be served chilled, so I didn't know if both components would be warm or chilled. The croissant is room temperature, the filling is a little chilled. Ube croissant: Pretty good, but the kaya croissant was better. The kaya filling had more flavor. I had a huge craving for some sweets the day after Christmas (despite having a ton of dessert options at home already), so I decided to try CA Bakehouse a la DoorDash for the first time. No regrets. So good. All the pandan things were great. I loved the gooey sweetness of the filling in the croissant and choux pastry. I nuked the pastries for a few seconds and they were perfect. Visited on a Saturday around noon and it was PACKED. The line went by quickly and the person helping at the front was very patient and didn't make us feel rushed at all. He answered all our questions and told us the egg tarts would be ready in 15-20 minutes if we were willing to wait. The egg tarts were so worth the wait! They came out piping hot and were so creamy but light at the same time. The pastry had the perfect flakes but was also slightly chewy in that perfect egg tart way. Some of the best I've had! The honeycomb cake was a surprising favorite too, not super sweet and perfectly springy and chewy. The mochi was really good and the sesame on top was the perfect topping. My friend and I discovered this place through Instagram after we saw many people posting about it. We decided to come here and pick up some goodies during COVID times. Just a heads up, we arrived a few minutes before they opened and they already had a line outside. The line wasn't too long but definitely had a decent amount of people in it and started to add up with more and more people behind us. We ended up ordering 3 kaya croissants, 6 egg tarts, 3 regular mochi cakes, and 3 guava mochi cakes. All of the items we ended up trying were so good. I have had Portuguese egg tarts at another location before and CA Bakehouses were much more eggier which is totally fine because they were still good! When we got all of the items, most of them were still hot, if not hot then still warm. This is how you know they make their items fresh which I truly appreciate. I enjoyed everything we tried. The crusts on the egg tarts were buttery and not too flaky. I loved the guava mochi egg cakes. It reminded me of the guava rolls from Porto's but with mochi. Just a heads up that the bakery hours are currently super limited due to COVID. They are only open on Saturday and Sunday and only for a limited amount of hours. Also, it seems that when people come here, they typically place large orders so be prepared to wait. Although, you probably won't have to wait too long. We ended up waiting about 15 minutes after we ordered and it was totally worth it. Customer service was super friendly. The people working here were super nice and patient with us when we were ordering. It appears that they are a family owned business and had all hands on deck to serve us some delicious treats. After reading many reviews, it looks like the pandan green waffle is another popular item. We unfortunately did not get the chance to try it this time but this is another reason for us to return and try some other goodies. Randomly came across this bakery when searching for something else on yelp, and omg what a gem! Of course I had to go try ALL of their pandan/kaya stuff. I got a pandan waffle, the kaya choux and the kaya crossaint. My toddler and husband loved the waffle, I loved the crossaint and choux even more. Great taste. It was devoured within 5 mins, even before we walked back to our parked car. Was tempted to turn around and buy more, but decided to just come back on future weekends. I almost wanted to minus a star (just because it opens only for 4 hours on sat & sun) and that makes it just a little bit inconvenient, but then.. I understand it's due to Covid, sooooo it's okay. CA Bakehouse popped up on my Yelp feed and has been bookmarked for a long time. I finally get to check this one off my list, and I'm glad that it wasn't a bust. In fact I would go as far as say that CA Bakehouse will be part of my usual rotation of bakeries. There's no where else that I would want to go for mochi cakes. My sister and I arrived at CA Bakehouse around 12:30pm on a Saturday. The place was definitely popular. There were several people waiting for their orders, but we got in line just in time for a rush. The bakery's hours are pretty limited due to Covid (only open on Saturdays and Sundays), but I'm happy to see that it's thriving during this time. Because of the bulk orders placed by us and as well as the guests in front of us, we did have to wait quite some time for our order. When there's a lot of people ahead of you, anticipate at least a 15 minute wait. Customer service was excellent. The two younger guys (brothers I presume?) were managing the queue and orders really well. The gentlemen who was taking orders/ringing up orders was really nice and patient. It was my sister's and my first time at the shop, so we had to take our time in deliberating on what to get. While we were waiting for our respective orders, he communicated to us that they were able to fulfill my sister's order of Portuguese egg tarts but were back ordered starting with my order. Not only did he refund me, but his brother also put in a couple of baked goods (the honey mochi and pandan bread) into my box for waiting and my inconvenience. I ordered a Guava filled mochi cake, Portuguese egg tarts, green waffle, Kaya (pandan) choux, taro pastry and a banana mochi cake. Aside from the taro pastry, which I gave to my mom and therefore did not try, everything was fantastic! I also appreciated that everything was warm and felt fresh out of the oven. I had no idea that CA Bakehouse was home to the green waffle. I have them to thank for this wonderful concoction that I've grown to love. The green waffle was exactly what I expected, but CA Bakehouse's is heavier on the butter. No wonder their green waffle is king compared to others I've tried elsewhere. I've always been a fan of Portuguese egg tarts and liked it way more than Chinese egg tarts. Gotta love the flaky buttery crust. Not going to lie, Pastelaria Adega's Portuguese egg tarts are as good as they get since they're from a legit Portuguese bakery, but CA Bakehouse does them justice for sure. I personally find that CA Bakehouse does them way better than an Asian bakery in SF known for their Portuguese egg tarts. Wow, wow, wow. The mochi cakes are fire! I loved each one I tried. I ordered online on Sunday an hour before they opened (at noon) and was given the pick time of 12:50p. We figured we got there early to walk around the little Saigon area. We got there about 11:45a and they were opened already. I did not get any notification saying my order was ready but I thought I tried anyway. Long behold, my order was ready by was prepared by 11:43a. They really should update their notification system and tell people when their order are ready. Now onto the food. I would skip the Choux. The outside was supposedly crunchy and inside airy which was not the case. I had the black sesame one and it seriously could have a lot more black sesame flavor. The texture was not right and the inside was not great. Definitely a pass. The kaya croissant was my fav. I did put it on the air fryer for a min or two and I think it made a big difference. This is my third time ordering from CA Bakehouse, and each time I've ordered variations of the Portuguese egg tarts (og, durian). CA Bakehouse is such a distinct and diverse bakery in the way that they provide traditional Southeast Asian flavors in their pastries, but preserve these flavors in unique ways. Their honeycomb cake is definitely the best I've ever had. The amount of pandan flavor is perfect, and the cake itself is extremely soft and has a soufflé-like texture. It's addicting and perfect to bring to small dinners or parties for dessert. A bit pricey, but it's worth the quality and taste. The egg tarts are also very good, the filling is creamy and decadent. They do not skimp on using real durian. They're wonderfully baked, but I just wish they were a bit more crispy. I prefer more firm egg tarts. The store is closed off from the inside, so the view of their large variety of pastries is limited. However, the cashiers are helpful and so the service is nice. I have been wanting to try this place for a while now, and I finally did earlier this month. And I liked some of the stuff I got so much I've been twice since then. I have ordered ahead, which is DEFINITELY the way to go. The line is always so long on the weekend. There's no wait in the pickup line-- you prepay, so you just tell them your name, get your order, and bounce. I've tried the mochi muffin (regular and guava). It's good and chewy but not amazing, I only ordered it once. I didn't realize the guava was jelly filling and not the flavor of the bread, and I wasn't a fan. Their egg tart is good but not mind blowing or outstanding compared to other places. I really loved the honeycomb cake-- ordered a full cake for myself, twice, and finished within a couple days. It's squishy, so I don't think the texture is for everyone. My favorite item was the pandan waffle - I love how chewy it is, with a light pandan flavor. I've ordered this every time I've placed orders--2 the first time, 3 the second time, and 4 during my most recent visit this past Sunday. It sucks that their hours are so limited (they aren't open during the week). And the traffic is always terrible around that area, and parking is AWFUL in that plaza. It's been a long time since I've had something that was hyped up live up to the reputation, but CA Bakehouse's pastries are seriously some of the best pastries I've had. I've been seeing them on IG and they're as delicious as they are pretty. We got the pandan milkbread, Portuguese egg tarts, kaya egg tarts, butter mochi, and ube choux. I wanted to order more, but I also wanted to try it first in case. Now I wish I had gotten more. The Portuguese tarts were heavenly. The crust was flaky and flavorful. The custard was creamy yet firm with just the right amount of sweetness. This tart was so perfectly balanced. The kaya tart was also just as good, but I preferred the regular to the kaya flavor. The ube choux reminded me a bit of the honey buns, but smaller. The ube was a creamy filling with a hint of sweetness. The crust to filling ratio was done right. I just wish I had purchased more than one. The pandan milk bread was a surprise since I'm not a huge fan of coconut. But the prefectly baked milk bread had a hint of pandan and the middle was pandan and coconut. I can't wait to go back to CA Bakehouse. I just wish that the location wasn't so hectic. I obsessed with this place! I found this place on Instagram and I couldn't wait to try! Its located in Vietnam Town and is only open on Fri-Sun from 12pm-4pm (but till 6pm on Saturdays). There is typically a line but the line goes by suprisingly quick! They are super quick with the ordering process and will prepare your order within minutes. I ordered the Kaya Pandan croissant, Ube Croissant, all the Choux flavors (Black Sesame, Pandan, Ube, Hojicha, and Durian), the Banana Mochi Cake and the Guava Mochi Cake. Everything was so flavourful and delicious! My favorites are anything pandan or durian. I really enjoyed everything here and will definitely keep coming back. Came to the bakehouse on a Saturday afternoon. I have been coming to this place since I discovered it in 2020. I was excited to visit this weekend because they showed on their Instagram that they had had a variety of cookies. By the time I got there, most of the cookies had sold out. They had a line of about 3 to 4 people but the service was really quick. I grabbed a couple of pastries to take home. If you are old enough to remember the Century Bakery at Grand Century (now occupied by Paris Baguette), you will love the nestoglia trip getting pandan/green waffles here. Growing up I've always gotten so many green waffles at the old Century Bakehouse and was so sad to hear it would be closing down. Man am I glad they decided to reopen up at Vietnam Town. Maybe it's nestoglia speaking and maybe I'm a bit bias but I really love their green waffles. I prefer thin green waffles in general over the thicker ones some places serve. I like it when it's more cripsy rather than fluffy. CA Bakehouse is more modern now and they serve all kinds of pastries. It is well worth trying a few things here and there. Going on a weekend is very painful. Parking is hard to find and you will have to do a few loops around just to get parking. Good luck everyone! read more

The photos look better than they taste. I got the pandan tart, hoji cha bun, and ube croissant. The only thing that was good was the pandan tart. Everything else was cold and dry. They have nice vibrant colors but the flavors were lacking. Got a hojicha latte and it was too sweet. I honestly can make a better one at home. read more

We ordered online and it was a 30 minute wait between ordering online and our pick up time. Location: the plaza was very busy and it was really hard to find parking - I recommend ordering online and just picking it up super fast so you don't need to park. The line was long if you didn't order online. Food: 4.5/5 the pandan/kaya croissant was my favorite - flaky, and the pandan filling was very good. Super unique dessert! The choux - 4.5/5. smaller than expected. Ube flavor was a bit subtler than I thought. The pandan flavor was good! The black sesame flavor was also very strong; I liked it a lot. Not as crunchy as I wanted, but maybe because it's been sitting for a bit. The Portuguese egg tart - 4/5. Flaky crust, creamy filling. Overall: 4/5. The parking and rather long line is a pain, but the pastries are good! I'd go again, if I ordered ahead of time. read more
