    Chai Tea Latte
    Dyanna Q.

This used to be called Coffee + Milk which was a really nice coffee bar that served excellent chai tea lattes. I don't know if they changed anything else besides the name... The coffee is still good, and I swear the staff are still the same too. They don't do fancy latte art (at least on my chai tea latte), but who cares about that. They also honored my punch card from Coffee + Milk. The one improvement is the pastries. I don't remember Coffee + Milk having an abundance of food. I tried a fluffy pastry with cheese and bacon, and it was delicious and filling. Since it's across the street from City Hall, it gets packed during the morning and random times of the day as politicos meet "outside the building." There are a few tables and chairs inside but it's worth it to take a stroll around the War Memorial.

Stumbled across this coffee shop on my way to work and decided to pop in to check it out! It's located right near the entrance of the War Memorial. They brew Intelligentsia coffee and have a nice selections of milks (Oatly!!) and pastries (Neighbor Bakehouse!!). The baristas are very friendly. There isn't too much seating, I think maybe 5-6 high stool seats inside and two or three small round tables right outside the cafe (but inside the Memorial). Really lovely cafe and will definitely be back! I also saw a sign that said they have 50% off select pastries and coffee from 2-4pm (I believe they're only open weekdays).

Curry potato turnover. Pass on this.

Tried the curry potato turnover ($4). There was one single thinly sliced potato sliver, yellow curry paste, ricotta (?) cheese. IMO there wasn't enough filling. I didn't really like this. I also bought a guava and cream cheese pastry ($4). This one is pretty good and you must try it. I don't think there was enough guava.

This is supposed to be a latte?! Ugh! I didn't ask for a cappuccino.
    SF S.

I asked for a latte not a cap. Make sure to ask for no foam. Which a latte shouldn't have foam..already a given.

How do we find out what the taco rotation is each week? Is it posted online somewhere? I know they have a sign there, but I don't want to walk there just to see what's being offered.

So we got an extra drink for free. Trying the iced latte, it was pretty disappointing lol. I thought it would be similar to like a Hawaiian style latte with macadamia milk, but it was a lot lighter than I thought. It was definitely very nutty, but it also just tasted like water down latte. Honestly not much going on with the drink, but it does taste lighter in general. Crazy have to pay $1.50 more to add on this milk. Overall, its alright. I do like the natural lighting coming into the shop, but nothing too special.

Food-wise, I got the banana matcha and famous breakfast sandwich. The matcha was more banana than matcha, which was a first for me (sometimes feels like there is no banana flavoring at all at other cafes) - on the sweeter side, but not bad! The sandwich was hard to eat bc it fell apart easily. On the lighter side, but I appreciate the Korean twist to it! The egg is steamed and they have a bacon/onion jam. The gochujang cookie definitely has a slight kick to it! Interesting flavoring, but it works somehow. Would definitely come back to work here and grab a quick drink if I'm in the area again!

Whether you are in the mood for a katsu sando, curry over rice, ochazuke with their matcha twist, or something sweet like the matcha cream pie, it is hard to go wrong here. All of the savory dishes I have tried have been great, but the fish katsu sando is one of my absolute favorites. The huge fish fillets are perfectly fried and flaky, tucked inside pillowy shokupan and topped with tangy yuzu shio koji sauce, tomato spread, and fresh crunchy cabbage. Every component works together beautifully, with richness, brightness, and texture all in balance. The pork katsu curry over rice is another standout. The katsu comes sliced into thick pieces that are still juicy inside, and it is fried expertly so the breading stays attached as you eat it. The curry has a really balanced flavor, even if I would not mind a little more spice, while the pickled radishes provide a nice contrast. I always add an onsen egg (for an additional $2) because breaking the runny yolk and mixing it into the curry adds another layer of velvety richness and creaminess. You can also tell they use high-quality matcha in their drinks, so the beverage menu is really more about choosing what fits your mood that day vs avoiding any bad options. Stonemill Matcha is a great option for a grabbing a drink on the go, a full blown sit down meal, a quick dessert stop or all of the above!

It had a very subtle matcha flavor, but I couldn't taste the grassiness. The sea green color was aesthetically pleasing when combined with the grassy matcha hue. As a drink, it is refreshing, but as a matcha latte, I felt there was too much milk, which drowns out the matcha flavor. 6/5 Kopi Klepon, Iced This was too delicious, I kept stealing sips from my partner (instead of drinking my own drink) and would order this one again. There was some coconutty sweetness, which added delicious complexity, and slight bitterness that pairs well with the sweet. In terms of flavor, this coffee drink rivals Vietnamese coffee. 4/5 Pandan Bolu This sponge cake-like pastry was springy and bouncy, with a medium green hue. My friend and I sat at the counter basically in a staring contest with the woman behind the counter, who just stared right back. After some 30 seconds, we finally flagging her down to place our order. After turning around the drinks suspiciously quickly, my friend and I sat down to catch-up in the empty cafe. Before long, the barista pumps up the volume, increasing higher and higher every 5 minutes or so, as if to signal to us that our time was up. I asked her to turn down the volume, which she tuned down from an 11 to a 7, but minutes later it continued to creep up, like the snooze setting of an alarm clock coaxing you to wake up - except in this case, to get out. My first priority was to try Loquat's famous babka, but the petite pink mahlab cake was also calling my name. I selected the salted chocolate babka to enjoy at the cafe and took the mahlab cake home to enjoy later. My friend and I lucked out because a table for two opened up right as we ordered. My babka was plated on a dainty ceramic dish, which matched the old-school European cafe vibes. The babka was light and fluffy, yet the outside was crisp and buttery like a croissant. The salted chocolate layers folded into the pastry were the perfect balance of sweet and salty, and the chocolate tasted high-quality. One babka could have probably been split into two servings, especially if you want to try multiple items, but I didn't leave behind a single crumb. All around us, the other diners seemed to be enjoying a full-scale brunch with savory pastries and what appeared to be a Turkish breakfast platter. It all smelled wonderful, so I'll have to explore more of the menu on my next visit. I enjoyed the mahlab cake a day later and was amazed that it retained its delicate and light texture. The icing was lightly flavored with orange, cherry, and floral notes, and the presentation was so elegant. The cake was the perfect accompaniment to my afternoon cup of tea. While I'm on a mission to try as many of SF's bakeries as I can, I am looking forward to returning to Loquat.
