I picked up a call-ahead order on August 25th. After driving all the way to my destination, I was shocked to see an extremely burnt & inedible grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese was brown/black throughout & the bread was as hard as a rock. Seeing as I had just paid $17 for 2 soups & this sandwich, I called to see if I could have my order refunded to my card. The manager said they were 'unable to do that because it was a pickup order' which to me, makes absolutely no sense. They offered to replace my sandwich if I came back, I was already 20 minutes away so that was not happening. All in all, Zupas has been a favorite of mine for a long time. From the outside on a dark winter night - the restaurant stands out - as the bright white signage and bright interior resembles a jewelry store (a pretty bright gem in my discovery none-the-less). Zupas fills the vacuum of a go-to place for healthy, creative, fresh food made daily from scratch (not poured out from a reheated plastic bag). To order - stand in a queue then as you progress through the line - you pay at the cashier who asks "what did you order again". Pick up your food and then grab a seat. The line was busy that if you wanted dessert - probably best to just grab it on the first order (unless they allow you to just pay the cashier and avoid the line again). The restaurant was particularly busy on a Tuesday evening when I visited. The concept is fairly good - one price soup ($6.39), one price for salads/and quioa bowls ($7.79), one price for sandwiches ($5.69),. Combos are all a common price (try-2-combo $8.99). Kid's meal $4.19. Pricing is generally under $10 per person w/ drink. I enjoy trying multiple items - so I had the crab-avocado w/ bacon panini (who could resist a panini and without upcharge because its real crab?) a Cubano panini (with ham and pulled pork), Cali protein cobb salad, a half clam chowder. (two combos) the sandwiches were good- nicely pressed and toasted, warm sandwiches. The crab was mildly spicy, and the cubano was a hit with my 3 year old. Clam chowder was a good helping and was warm. Cubano pulled pork was a bit dry - very lean (I prefer a bit more fat) but it was still yummy. I went here a few times and the most recent time I went I decided to try the tofu. I'm not kidding when I say it SMELLED and TASTED like sewer water. The smell was so strong I almost threw up. This place has some really tasty and healthy choices. I like it because they get a lot of local and some organic ingredients and make fresh gourmet style sandwiches, salads and soups. They do have a decent amount of items that can be altered to be vegetarian and this becomes apparent on their online ordering but kind of hidden and isn't advertised in person from what I've seen. They don't like to change ingredients only take away which can be annoying but the fact that you can alter the protein to be a vegan or vegetarian one on most of their salads and protein bowls is great. They need to put this on their printed menu and advertise this information! It otherwise appears that all salads and protein bowls only have meat. Except for this they have delicious healthy foods, healthy unique teas and lemonades and overall a great option for fast casual foods. I'd say on proportion a little on the lighter side. I always finish the meal and I'd say I'm not hungry but I'm not full. A touch unsatisfying but to be honest how we are supposed to eat. We went here on a whim because we wanted a quick bite to eat. I got the combo with vegetarian sandwich and tomato basil bisque. The sandwich was really good but, I felt like it needed a little more flavor. They have chalula sauce to use which made the sandwich just perfect. Also I would have preferred it grilled as well, but it was my first time and I did not ask for it. The tomato bisque was delish until it gets a little cold than it is just okay. The soup hot tastes a million times better. I do feel that it can get pricey if you get soup add ons. Another suggestion would be to also allow customers to add something to their sandwich if they choose. I had asked if I could add jalapeno to it and was told no add ons were allowed in sandwiches. Weird. Overall, I thought it was decent. I would probably go back to try something different :) read more

Their soup is fantastic, don't get me wrong - but their business model is terrible! I picked up three soups to-go on Monday. When I arrived at home and opened one of the soups - the little cup was only half full! I thought it might be an error, but I opened up the other two, and they were each only half filled. We wound up having to make dinner on top of this to be satisfied. The franchise owner might want to consider that the cost savings of skimping on soup won't justify the losses in repeat customers! I hate to say it, because I would like nothing more than if this place stuck around (the clam chowder and the lobster bisque are very good, and that's saying a lot, considering this isn't a seafood place!) - but I just don't see them sticking around very long with this business model. Love love... This place is awesome.. Upon entry I notice how awesome and clean this place is. Plenty of tables and high chairs with charging stations if you have your laptop. This is a soup, salad and sandwich place not to forget their awesome desert selection. Is not big but sure is amazing. They have combos for 8.99 where you can get 1 full sandwich and half soup or salad. You can also switch it up by getting half soup and half salad. Drinks are sold separately. They have fountain drinks along with their home made waters infused with fruits which I am hooked on. If you haven't been here this is a must visit. Their meals are served with bread and chocolate covered strawberries Yum. Lavatory was pretty clean I must say specially on how busy thus place is. I will keep coming. Love it. read more

Cute, modern, fast and fresh. Drove by with my nineteen year old so we stopped by to try it. The menu looks good nice variety of soups . I had the mushroom soup it's delicious I hear thei soups are made in house. Came with bread and a chocolate strawberry . The girl behind the counter was very nice and offered us samples of soup. I wish there soup was warmer it may be hard to keep at a constant warm temp with cream soups though. I'll be back and would like to sample the salads as well. Heard about this new place that opened up nearby work so I decided to try it out. Pretty much like a Panera, without all the bagels and coffee in the background. I really liked the interior of the place - I can tell they were aiming for a modern-style vibe. I was here from 12-12:30 and there was a long line the entire time. Although I started waiting at the third row, they were pretty good at serving their customers in a timely manner. I like that they have a sign placed in the beginning of the line giving you a quick overview of how you can order the food and there are stacks of menus throughout the line. What I really liked about the food options was that pretty much everything came with a free chocolate covered strawberry. :) I went with the pick 2 option (panini and half cup of soup) and here are my thoughts on those picks: 1) Chicken Pesto Panini - Unlike Panera, it isn't half of a full panini order, but it is comparable in size. The size of the entire panini is similar to a regular standard slice of bread. They cut up the panini in two, but it definitely is a lot smaller than expected. I ordered the whole grain bread (which you have to ask for) and it had little pieces of grains in the bread that has an interesting taste to it. There wasn't anything special about the panini, it wasn't outstanding, and it wasn't bad either. The workers also made it fairly quickly. 2) Red Pepper Lobster Soup - The soup section is after the sandwich section, so if you are ordering JUST soup, you can skip the straddlers that are still ordering their salad/sandwich. They have a variety of options and what I really like is that you can actually see pictures on their menus of what the soup looks like before ordering. The only disappointing thing I found about the soup was that they didn't really fill up the soup all the way to the top of the cup. Kinda seems like they are skimping. There is an option to add croutons in your soup! 3) Chocolate covered strawberry - super happy that it was free, and you can't really screw up chocolate covered strawberries 4) Service: Each worker is designated in each section. There are a lot of them and it seems like they all have a specific role. Unfortunately, this sometimes makes it difficult to communicate with them. I asked for my soup as a to-go and panini for "here." However the worker behind the dessert section could not understand what I was saying and I had to repeat my self several times. Since the soup was quick and the panini was slightly delayed another worker came up the counter and tried to put the sandwich on someone else's plate. When I told her it was mine, she ignored me and took the sandwich back to her station. Although eventually my order was fixed, there isn't quite the level of professionalism from the workers as you would like to see from a place that aims to market itself through word-of-mouth. Not sure if I would come back, definitely not on my own. Probably would only come back if someone that I was eating lunch with REALLY wants to try out the place. read more

I'm so glad they are finally opening Cafe Zupas in Illinois! I first tried one in Minnesota and kept thinking they should have one of these back home! As others mention, if you are sick of Panera but love soups, salads and sandwiches, then you have to try Cafe Zupas! Everything screams fresh here; I'm big on colorful salads and their salads do not disappoint. The workers recommended the MexiCali Pork protein bowl; it had kale, quinoa, tasty shredded pork, avocado, tomatoes, black beans, corn and tricolor peppers. The orange, chili, cilantro dressing was really good BUT I should have either got it on the side or told the workers to go light with it; they put a little too much for my usual liking, but that didn't stop me from devouring my salad! All their salads look fantastic and can't wait to try more, plus they come with chocolate covered strawberries. Tonight I got the vegan roasted veggie and quinoa soup; this soup tastes way better than it sounds! The best part is that it's not salty like most restaurant soups-big plus for me! The kiddies got the grilled cheese meal that comes with soup (or fruit cup), drink and chocolate covered strawberry for only $4.19-score! I know most people like their tomato basil soup, but it was a bit too thick and sweet for me; however, my son loved it! My teenager got a big bowl of the lobster bisque which he gave a big 2 thumbs up. The desserts looked really good, but we opted out this time. Food is Decent ... Staff Is TERRIBLE!!! We stopped in today (11:25 lunch) and the staff was terrible. There was a young hispanic kid and a heavier set (I'm not fat shaming as I am also on the heavier side) female in her late twenties. They were not interested in helping us, or the other guests, but decided they waned to save their personality for flirting with each other. Alright, that's fine, but don't treat the guests like they are beneath you and an inconvenience. I ordered the Clam Chowder with my meal, but they didn't put bacon on it. The menu picture shows it with bacon, so I assumed it came on it. Give the guest some warning it is not included and there will be an upcharge to order it...or don't picture the item with ingredients it doesn't include. The gentleman that rang us up was not overly friendly, but seemed to understand the frustration with this restaurant. At least he had customer service experience. The food was decent, but nothing amazing, so I'll stick with Corner Bakery from now on! read more

The food is good, but the people working there always give me attitude and I don't appreciate it. I am vegan. I don't eat meat. I order the same thing every time I come and it's the same deal, the people working get weird when I ask for vegan chicken. The woman today who made the salad was really not nice how she spoke to me and made my experience horrible. When I asked for vegan chicken instead of regular chicken she gave me so much attitude! I asked for the salad to be for "here", then she put it for "ToGo". Then I asked if she could toss the dressing in, so she slaps my salad in a bowl and throws the closed cup of dressing in the bowl (clearing not wanting to do it for some reason). I don't know what I did. I just wanted vegan chicken instead of regular chicken. So I came here for the first time yesterday and I was nicely impressed overall! It's a new location so it still has the brand new look & feel. It reminds me of like a Panera or something like that. Everything is House made and good quality. They have a combo meal ($9) where you can get a full sized sandwich plus a half soup or salad. I tried the veggie sandwich and their red pepper lobster bisque. The sandwich was good, nothing spectacular but the soup was amazing and you get a good portion. Highly recommend the soup!! The two coworkers I was with also liked theirs. The meals come with a small chocolate covered strawberry which was a nice touch. They do have other desserts and I highly recommend paying the $3 for the wild berry creme brûlée. If you don't do the combo meal, it can get a little pricey but the food is good. read more

O.K. food, small sandwiches and a seriously overpriced menu....For the lines and talk, you would think this place deserves better, but it just fails at almost everything. I have never seen so many employees utilized to make small panini sandwiches, soup and salads. I counted 13 employees visible - and the line still took 15 minutes!!! The salad was chicken avocado chop which was okay, pretty basic but you couldn't go wrong with choosing that salad. The sandwich we got was an avocado blt which was super disappointing. The bacon was cold & soft. I was hoping for crispy cooked bacon & it was pretty much a basic sandwich. The bread was the best part on the sandwich. I'd skip on the desserts. We have 4 kids, each wanted something & then we (parents) picked something out. We got the chocolate covered strawberries, caramel rockslide brownie, Creme brûlée cheesecake & Nutella creme brûlée. I ordered 3 things and none of them were what I anticipated . Clam chowder soup was watery and did not taste like clam chowder at all . Could not taste or find any pesto in the Pesto chicken sandwich and the crab avocado melt sandwich was just bland . Totally disappointed . This place has tons of great options, especially if you are looking for something healthy but still delicious. I would definitely compare this restaurant to the upgraded, better version of Panera. I always get the build your own chicken chopped salad. There is literally every ingredient you could possibly think of to add to your salad, making it unique, fun and so tasty. You forget that you're eating something healthy! The soups are also amazing. My favorite is the lobster bisque but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Love this restaurant so much! Was baited into trying this place because of a generous 50% off coupon I received in the mail and honestly will keep coming back here. Great atmosphere, open style kitchen and serving counter to allow visibility of all the fresh ingredients. The ordering process is similar to a Chipotle (go down the line and add whichever ingredients you want to your order). I had a VERY delicious Mexicali Braised Pork Quinoa Protein Bowl! Everything was so bright, colorful, fresh and most importantly, delicious! As a side they give you a little chocolate covered strawberry - very good! The only negative I could think of is that the line was about 25 minutes long but I will assume that this was only because it was opening weekend. I always forget this place is there and it's such a great surprise when my brain remembers it is there. Like finding money in your winter coat pocket, but more delicious! We just went this past weekend and the service was excellent. We had our toddler with us and the one employee, Sophia or Gloria I think, (she has a 1 1/2 year old boy) went out of her way to carry our second tray and get us a high chair. She was so sweet and helpful! Btw huge plus the high chair was clean!!! Woot! The food is like 10 times better than Panera with more choices to boot. I have loved everything so far. Maybe it's because I work in the Loop, but I definitely don't get the comments around this place being expensive - fresh food isn't cheap, and $9 for a salad is a downright bargain. Have you been to Sweetgreen? The woman at the counter immediately welcomed me when I walked in and walked me through their ordering process. Their tomato bisque was, bar-none, the best tomato bisque I have had in recent memory. The salads were fresh and had interesting ingredient blends and the infusions are so, so good. I've been going to this Zupas regularly since it first opened. I would recommend the Pick Two. They have a wide variety of soups, salads, and sandwiches. My own-go to lunch choice is the Mangoberry Salad matched with the Ultimate Grilled Cheese. Very tasty. Lunch always comes with a chocolate-covered strawberry but, occasionally, I'll add a creme brulee (salted caramel is my favorite). Everything is made fresh daily here, which caught my attention (plus multiple coworkers raving about everything). The first time I went here was with my husband. He ordered a large clam chowder and I ordered the combo with a crab avocado melt and lobster bisque (combo is under $10!). We shared one of their housemade teas and it was great! It wasn't too sugary sweet, but had a natural sweetness to it. The bread that comes with your soup is so soft, but holds together well when dunking. My sandwich was delightful! I can't believe I had never thought of putting crab and avocado, two of my favorite things, together in a delectable sandwich! I can't even begin to describe the soup. They nailed it! This is my go-to place for dinner or lunch after a workout when I need something filling yet doesn't feel like I just ate a huge meal. Obviously being closed on Sunday's is a bummer, but I think it shows great incentive for their employers. More importantly, everything on their menu is fresh and creative. There's no other place like it. A lot of their options are priced individually and you pay extra for toppings.
