Amazing, authentic Turkish food! They even have Iskender just like I had as a kid in Bursa! The mint lemonade is also different than your American mint lemonade but paired with a baklava is the perfect way to go for Istanbul style! My wife also loved their falafel wraps! We spent the Labor Day weekend in downtown San Diego hotel and found the family owned Cafe Istanbul by mistake. I must say this was the best mistake me, my wife and 2 daughters had. We got the best treatment by Yolduz in front desk and her husband Akrom inside the kitchen and then the food was so delicious. We will definitely be back on our next SD trip. read more

Horrrible!! Read carefully, the food was very bad quality.. The service was average but couldn't be better. The lentil soup tasted anything but lentil soup, iskender's was not good. We got a large combo appetizer plate but literally only tasted and 80% of the appetizers were still on the plate.. HOWEVER the main problem about this place was that we gave the card they tried not to show the total amount's breakdown so I was like ok fine whatever but it was kind of too much. Anyways we paid and then they asked us to leave a tip on the card reader and I asked them to show the breakdown before I add the tip and the waiter goes "no you have to add the tip first and then you can see it" and I didn't want to argue I was like fine.. I added tip and signed.. I asked her to bring me the receipt; she FINALLY brought it and I saw they made us pay the tip TWICE. The initial invoice already had 18% included (mandatory) and she asked me to add tip on top of that WITHOUT telling me that tip was already included. So overall we ended up paying almost 40% tip ??! Ok, so we loved this place so much we came back for their breakfast! So authentic and such wonderful service! We stopped just for appetizers one evening and loved the sampler! They make everything there and family run. Breakfast was great and so yummy! We started with a salad ( right, salads on the breakfast menu!) then I had the eggs with onions and peppers and hubby had the layered baked cheese dish. I'm not going back there ever again. 1. Be aware of their 18% service charge for the orders $80 or more (never seen this before in my life). It's only written on the receipt when its time to pay. 2. We ordered two combo plates which are $18.95 each. When the check arrived we found that we were charged $25.95 for each plate. We never ordered $25.95 dish and while ordering I pointed with my finger to the $18.95 dish. (you can't prove since there are no pictures). 3. I ordered yogurt drink and a few moments later we found a fly inside the drink and I asked the waiter to replace the drink. I waited 10-15 minutes for my drink and it never arrived. Then I asked him again and they brought half empty dirty glass with some weird brown spots (of course I didn't even touch it). 4. We asked for two glasses of water and they just brought one. I wish there was a zero star. The only time I write a review is when I'm truly appalled by a place. This place claims to be authentic but in actuality it's a mish mosh of everything that surrounds turkey and they claim it as their own "Turkish dish." However, they portray a poor excuse of those dish's that otherwise can be made much better by the actual people who made the authentic food to begin with in the regions that is not turkey (but they claim it as authentic Turkish food which is false) . Nothing about this place is authentic. All their food is a poor imitation of the countries surrounding them. Poorly executed. Poorly presented and especially poorly seasoned and tasting. I really enjoyed Cafe Istanbul and would definitely return! There are a lot of options on the menu so everyone can find a dish to enjoy. The thin crust bread/cracker was delicious with that dipping spread (I think it was peppers). I got the Greek salad and added the beef shwarma, it was delicious and perfect size. The salad is pretty large so can easily be an entree salad if you add protein. We shared an order of grape leaves which were delicious. The person I was with got the chicken kebob and rice plate, that garlic spread was soooooooooo good. We ended our meal with Turkish tea and baklava, both good. I was surprised the tea was not sweet, for some reason I was expecting it to be super sweet. Very good meal, attentive service, at times the service was a little too attentive border line annoying but I guess that is better than being completely ignored. *Parking tip* whatever side street is parallel to Beverly Dr. has free meter parking after 6pm so I just parked there and it's a very short walk : ) read more

I was there today 12/2618 approximately 2:15 pm, just for myself for late lunch. There was a table open but not yet cleaned, the restaurant looked busy, so I waited to be called to be seated. Finally a waitress/hostess asked how many of me, I told her for one. She replied they had no table for me and I had to wait. I pointed at the empty table that not yet cleaned and she walked away. A few minutes later a middle eastern couple walked in right behind me, the hostess told another worker to clean that table for them. The worker told her that I was there first. She was the boss and didn't seem to care so she gave that table to the couple came right behind me. That was because of the color of my skin. Manti was good for someone who craves it for so long. It is not. hundred percent authentic but pretty satisfying. Adana kebab wrap was good but little far from Turkish style. They added tahini sauce that makes it taste like Lebanese food. Overall, it was a good experience. We orderred baklava and coffee at the end. So disappointed in this restaurant. Food is good and has tons of flavor but the service is awful and don't know how this place stays in business. We joined with a. Group of seven people and waited nearly 45 mins after ending seated for someone to ask us for drinks. They were too busy taking everyone else's orders and talking with their customers who speak the same language rather than those who were seated first. We ordered appetizers and entrees after flagging down the waitress after nearly two hours and all our food came out at once. No drinks were ever filled and then the icing on the cake was when the check came and there were multiple iced teas on there when only two people ordered iced tea. When we asked, waitress said "no free refills!" Then why not tell he customer instead of charging for a bazillion iced teas!? Poor service and management and what a bummer cause the food is pretty good. Also way too many people that stand around the restaurant smoking like a chimney and it wreaks of hookah and smoke. It's fine for take out but don't let the Beverly Hills address fool you into thinking this place is fancy when it's at best just a fast food middle eastern to go style food and atmosphere. read more
