Had lunch here and the food was just OK. I had the chicken marsala. It was kind of dry and hard to chew, though the sauce was flavorful. My mom had the spaghetti with marinara sauce and said it was just OK. The waitress was, at best, cordial...on the upside, there was plenty of parking. I will not return, mainly because of the lack of quality of the food. At $30 person after tip...there are plenty of better options in LA. read more

My wife and I have not been venturing out to eat much at all since the COVID situation hit. However, just the two of us decided to dine out for her birthday. We picked Cafe Sole since we had very much enjoyed dining there in the past. We made a reservation and were glad we did since the outdoor patio was full. All COVID protocol was practiced. Dip it in the olive oil & balsamic vinaigrette.... yummy!! Chopped Salad - Big portion, fresh ingredient,not over dressing. Very nice husband & wife team who run a friendly, casual, warm, unpretentious Osteria. The Glendale, La Canada/Flintridge locals seem to appreciate this Mom & Pop so 7pm on a Friday night was filled to the gills. It does get a bit noisy since there are sound reflecting surfaces inside. Perhaps the outside patio dining may have a bit more civilized sound level. My Italian American friend, Austin, accompanied me so we ordered a Sauteed Mushroom Pizza to share. The yeast raised crust is soft & bready with lots of mozzarella with a light tomato based salsa marinara (mah ree nah rah). We asked to have some Grana Padana (relative of Parmigiana Reggiana) sprinkled over the pizza for more sweet, Umami filled, dairy richness. Austin mentioned he would rather have a bit of Romano or Pecorino instead, and the husband was very generous & went to the trouble of offering him some freshly cut Pecorino. I was impressed by the courtesy. Next came the Calamari Fritti which was the crowning dish. The batter was thin yet crispy so it allowed the slightly rubbery, al dente texture & sweetness of the calamari to come through. The accompanying salsa marinara was lightly herbed & the acidity from the tomatoes cut the light oiliness of the fried calamari. The secondi was Osso Buco & Pappardelle pasta in a thickened tomato based sauce. The sauce could have been a bit richer by having more concentrated fond de cuisine or broth to add more meatiness & Umami. The Osso Buco was fork tender & had a soft, slightly velvety texture which indicated the meat was braised for a long time to reach that level of suave, falling off the bone tenderness. All the above was paired with Sangiovese Toscana at $9 a glass which was not particularly impressive since it was dull, unbalanced, lackluster. The weak point of Cafe Sole is in its wine selection by the glass. There are only 2 red Italian wines by the glass out of 8. The California wine section is larger with more choices by the glass, but when I come to an Italian restaurant, I would like to have a Barbaresco, Barolo, Nero d'Avola, Montepulciano, etc. that would be more interesting & possibly more appropriate to the meal. However, most of the clientele may not relate to "strange sounding" Italian wines so maybe Cafe Sole is wise having more Californian wines that sound more familiar. Also for oenophiles, be sure to bring your own bordeaux or bourgogne style wine glass since the wine glasses here are rather clunky & thick. We finished off the meal with Spumone which tastes like something in an American style fruit cake where the pieces of Citron taste slightly medicinal to me, but my guest, who ordered it, loved it. I would say that the food here is about 3+ Yelp stars, but the warm service & generosity compells me to round up. We stayed from a little after 7pm to 10pm, and Cafe Sole did not rush us out. This is a small space where hospitality is strongly felt. As we left, the owner/husband personally bid us goodbye. We left satisfied into the warm, early fall evening. read more

I wanted to love Cafe Sole so much. I have noticed this quaint and charming place for years. Even though the food was good, our service experience fell flat. We made reservations for the outside patio for 6pm and when we arrived, the host said it was booked. (Same patio tables still open when we left) That was awkward and disappointing. We had to ask for bread and butter and balsamic vinegar. (3 different requests) When the food arrived, we had to flag down our server for fresh parmesan and fresh ground pepper was never offered. The little things add up. I imagined a small town restaurant with a personalized experience and Cafe Sole just didn't hit the mark. Too pricey for a mediocre experience. read more

The busboy greeted us and was accommodating and smiled, but it took a while for the waiter to crack a smile ... I, too, take food seriously :-). But once he talked while we ordered you could sense his passion for food. We decided to start with the Mushroom soup du jour. Honestly, it could have been served hotter, took a lot of pepper to give it some flavor and overall Mr. Picky said it was far from the best he'd ever had, and I definitely agree. Bland. Mr. P had the lasagna and I don't think either of us was super impressed with it. But the waiter suggested I try a special and I admit it was really great. It was comprised of freshly-made spinach linguini, zucchini, sausage and tomato. So simple, yet light and flavorful. The sausage gets removed from the casing, sautéed with wine and garlic, then baked, and finally has the fat removed and gets pan-crisped. Worth the effort. For dessert we tried the Ricotta Cheesecake which was dense and lovely, and then the Panna Cotta which was light and very close to perfect (one of the best I've had). Overall, some contrasts to elements of the dining experience. Mr. Picky thinks it's "3" stars, but my entreé was far better than his and I'm giving it "4". read more

Amazing food in an unassuming location. Truly authentic Italian food and their flourless chocolate cake is just to die for. The staff is always on point and friendly. The wife who runs the restaurant is like your auntie who makes sure everyone is fed and happy and things are running smoothly. Haven't met the husband yet who is the chef, but the food is just wonderful. Read the reviews: They play favorites and are friendly (ie, not sexist or racist) if you show up the right color or are with someone they like/know. (Was treated SO much better when I went with a friend who knew them.) Food is bland and expensive for what it is; the interior is plain and outdoor dining is by the freeway overpasses. I'd recommend the rest of the restaurants in the complex over this one for both food, value and service. But if you have to have Italian, then Divina is a better choice. read more

Great neighborhood trattoria with good solid food and reasonably priced. The staff is very friendly, the service is great and fast. I love it that the food comes out so quick. I hate "the dining experience " where a restaurant makes you wait 30-45 minutes for food to come out. I had no less finished saying salad, and it was on the table. If there was any complaint, it's that the main course came out while I was still on my salad(and I eat fast) but this was a little too fast. The outdoor seating is very comfortable even when it's rainy and cold outside I had the swordfish, with pasta instead of mashed potato's & veggies. Not very good. Overpriced and small portions. Complimentary bread is sourdough which I'm not a big fan of with only olive oil as dipping sauce, at least include some balsamic vinegar. Though I eventually asked for it towards the end. Oh by the way, the bread comes only after you order your main course(s). We sat for a while before the order. Definitely not something that I'm used to at an Italian restaurant. That said, we were invited by a friend while he was in the area. We love Italian cuisine and dined at many, often eat at a few nearby our hometown in Pasadena. In comparison, the food here is subpar at best. It is more Americanized and not as 'hearty Italian' compared to the ones we regularly frequented. I had the Linguine alle Vongole which is not on the menu but requested it, basically clams linguine with white wine sauce. While it tasted just ok, but was definitely lacking the signature 'wine sauce' and a few more clams. Pretty much a letdown especially for paying in upwards of $25 for such dish, not to mention very small in quantity. Other items like the Pomodoro with Penne and another with Spaghetti wasn't bad either, but again just wasn't enough in bold taste and quantity. Luckily with all these dishes, I can make at home to my liking and portion size but that's an entirely different story saved for another time. Alas, food isn't expensive per se. I can handle 'expensive'...but certainly not for overpriced with just above o.k. in taste and minuscule serving sizes. Would I come back? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the mood and if I'm in the area. read more

I take away 1 star because when we ate here during their dinner service, the crew are a little rude, there is a female server that does not want us to sit inside for some reason and it feels that she is rushing us to finish our meal, literally night and day difference from the lunch crew. 4 1/2 Stars I spent too much time in a plane flying to and returning from Iowa the last few days. I was hoping that it would mean a business opportunity and alas proved to be otherwise. Oh Well. On the Uber home i thought: where could i go for lunch, what would prove a salve to my wounded ego...food wise? Pasta! Pasta: something that i almost never consume for any number of dietary reasons. But it was what i wanted today, what i needed, what my soul needed to replenish itself. So off to Cafe Sole i went. Cafe Sole with its terrific in house made country bread (my word, not theirs), it's super pasta dishes (cooked al dente, of course) and it's marinara: brewed in heaven, yes? It was a warm day in La Canada and the outside seating was filled with the Ladies who Lunch. I mean like 100% La Canada soccer Moms. Pretty Impressive! Inside: no one! But me. I quickly ordered: water, Sangiovese, a plate of Penne Arabiatta with hot sausage. Sangiovese: though i noticed they stored this on a rack, this wine was deep, rich, grapey, earthy, slightly sweet without a hint of having set out without refrigeration. "Sangiovese" means Blood of Jupiter and believe me i needed a transfusion today. Penne Arabiatta: The pasta was cooked al dente as usual, the sausage maybe could have been spicier but there was plenty on my plate. The Star of the plate is the Marinara Sauce: the Italians called this a "sugo": a sauce made with tomatoes. Bear in mind that this is not a Godfather movie type of Italian American "Gravy" made with meats. This Marinara is clean tasting, light, obviously made with good San Marzano tomatoes, superior Olive oil. I could eat this sauce on everything. In fact a bowl of this with the excellent bread and a bucket load of the Sangiovese would have made a super Lunch onto itself. Service is quick, the wait staff is nice and the cooks get the food out quickly. Lots of parking and there is seating in as well as outside. After all the traveling of the last few days and a less than stellar result of proposed business, Cafe Sole proved to be the salvation of my bruised soul and ego today. Picked this little spot to have dinner before our Enchanted Evening at the Descanso Gardens and we're so glad we did. Super cute little spot. It's not the fanciest place but still has a cozy vibe. The staff is on top of it. We didn't have to wait very long for anything. The food was delicious! But the star of the evening was Alessandra. She was fantastic!! Excellent service. The atmosphere and decor makes it suitable for a nice casual date, business lunch meeting and birthday celebration or alike. They have covered patio seating that worked quite well for a party of 8 that was there. For larger groups and if the weather is nice, I recommend booking a table in the patio area. Our party of 2 chose the indoor seating with AC. We had the spinach linguini with zucchini and sausage. This dish is not on the menu. We ordered this dish by showing the pic another yelper (Ruth K.) had posted to our waitress. She immediately recognized the dish! We enjoyed the pasta very much and would recommend it (see pic). First time review. On the outside it is nice & clean. There is outside dining with 9 4 person tables, inside is nice clean and comfortable. There are 6 4 person tables in the center with 5 2 person tables along the wall. We were greeted at the door and seated quickly, asked what drinks we would like and served quickly. Italian Bread is served with olive oil and basaltic vintages. Hot n fresh. All the Staff is very friendly. Rey ordered salmon with vegetables which was very tasty. I enjoyed the swordfish on a bed of olive's and tomatoes. Very delicious. We are definitely returning to try the dinner menu. read more
