We have purchased a pie and a cake from here verrrrry last minute (one of those times being the day before Thanksgiving) and we were impressed with 1) the amount of choices available, 2) how delicious each pie and cake was, 3) how easy it was to order online and get inventory over the phone of what was left and available. I can vouch that the chocolate crème pie was amazing & delicate and the triple chocolate cake was delicious as we ate every single bite of this cake. Highly recommend both! The patio is friendly and open for you to sit and enjoy your coffee or tea and dessert. I really like the back patio & seating as well if the front patio is not your jam. read more

The vegan chocolate muffins are definitely just giant, unfrosted cupcakes. Dark and rich, sweet but not cloying, super moist and tender, they're everything you could ever want in a dessert that's still socially acceptable to eat first thing in the morning. You've got plenty of non-dairy milk options for lattes and other coffee drinks, because of course they're open fairly early... Sounds like an easy one-stop deal to me. read more

This place is great! Tucked away in a shopping center so you can miss it easily, but worth checking out. They have a HUGE assortment of sweets from pies to cookies, pop tarts, croissants and EVERYTHING in between! It's a great spot to grab a coffee & a little sweet treat and just work on your laptop. There is a lot of seating but it does fill up! Plenty of parking out front which makes it so much easier! read more

A first rate coffee house. * * * Coffee houses of any persuasion used to be few and far between in Far South Austin - That situation has improved dramatically in recent years * * * In the old days, here is how you judged a coffee house in Far South Austin. [Does It Have Coffee?] If it did, it got a five star review. By this standard, Jim's was an absolute mecca. Finding a Starbucks was like finding a $100 bill in your sofa cushions. * * * Now, there are enough classy establishments in the Far South, That we can afford to be fussy. Radio was a major pioneer here. (Radio is still one of the best coffee houses in Austin anywhere.) Lots of other small artisanal places have arisen to give Radio a run for its money. * * * Where does Captain Quackenbush fit into this new Far South Scene? 1) Coffee-wise the coffee is standard issue. Perfectly functional - But you would not invite a Coffee-ologist from Harvard to decipher any Quackenbush brewing secrets. 2) Space-wise the place has intriguing possibilities. On pure looks, nothing in the South beats Radio. But Captain Quack's has two outdoor spaces - which are very helpful in times of pandemic. There is a thin strip of tables on the sidewalk in front of the coffee house. You look at a parking lot and the traffic on Menchaca. But it is open air and you have your own table. There is the world's ugliest backyard behind Captain Quack's. But they got lots of tables and nobody is out there (because it is so ugly). So you can drink your coffee and work and catch zero diseases. Inside they have two big very separate rooms, neither of which is especially crowded. You can stay indoors when it is raining and maintain nice social distance. (Note the contrast with the jam-packed Monkey's Nest on the North side.) Thumbs up here. 3) Music quality? Epic. Or rather, Epoch. Epoch has the best playlist of any coffee house in the city. Captain Quack's can match them one for one with new and interesting artists. 4) Food. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow. Now to be fair, they do not have really obscure or hard to get items. If you want a coffee house with a unique and distinctive kitchen go to either of the two Sa-Tens. At Sa-Ten, you get fusion Japanese dishes with idiosyncratic coffee drinks to boot. What Quackenbush does is bake. Quackenbush bakes really really well. They have about fifteen times as many baked good choices as you get in any of the standard independent coffee houses. They have three times as many choices as Russell's - the other major bakery-oriented coffee-house in Austin. Quack's baked goods are better to boot. The day I went, there was a huge selection of scones, a huge-r collection of cupcakes and all sorts of other miscellaneous goodies as well. I went with a traditional coffee cake, and a chocolate peanut butter cupcake. Strangely, they tasted just like a traditional coffee cake and a chocolate peanut butter cupcake. (Who wudda thunk?) Both of them Were Just Fine. Add a good latte, A fine fine workspace at a nearly empty bar with tons of space and electrical sockets And fine fine post punk on the sound system. Life was good. The nearest human being was twenty yards away. * * * So yes, Quackenbush's is a fine establishment. If you want food other than baked goods, They have them - although the choices are limited. But that is not why you are here. You are being good and noble. You are doing all this hard work. You deserve to be rewarded for your efforts. You should get a cookie ... And a piece of pie ... And a muffin ... And a scone ... And a piece of cake ... (You can see where this is going.) Just make sure you get a lot of work done To justify all of those rewards. read more

I'm always on the hunt for house-made chai and there are only a handful of places in Austin that make their own chai from scratch. Quackenbush is one of them and their chai is delicious! It's one of my top 4 favorite chais in Austin. Lots of spice and not too sweet, unless you like it sweet and then they'll make it with their house-made horchata. Ohmygosh. So good. The service is also super friendly. Very family style, laid back, keep Austin weird kind of place. Love it! read more

Opens at 7:00 AM *So their hours are far later than showing of Yelp....as of this writing open till midnight (bar side) everyday except Sundays when its open till 10:00 PM * Fantastic coffee drinks - a full menu of cold and hot ones. Definitely recommend the sweet Vietnamese cold coffee for a sweet treat....add a shot and wake the F up! Croissants, Bagels and other breakfast baked items. Does not have a full menu of food...yet they do have all things baked and sweet. Great public wifi available - the highlight of the spot is the ability to get work done on your laptop without being bothered - the ultimate chill spot. Personally I got here in the morning and spent the entire day here. Once 5:00 rolls around you can fold up the laptop and notebooks and dive into happy hour with a cocktail. Essentially there are two sides - "business in the front - party in the back" Having recently moved part time to Austin this is absolutely one of my newly discovered gems in South Austin. read more

Finally went to try out Quackenbush after my partner had recommended it. Absolutely love the atmosphere that they've put together in the coffee shop, but more than that is the wide range of drinks and eats they have. It's also a great price considering that everything has become overpriced but not here. If you're meeting someone for catch up or doing some studying, perfect place to go. They also have events often to truly bring the community together. read more

I love Captain Quakenbush's Coffeehouse! They have wonderful desserts. I highly recommend the cake slices (so soft anf moist) and the cinnamon rolls. The staff is friendly and all wear masks which make people like me more comfortable. I am especially happy that they are raisingoney for Ukraine. If you buy one of their sugar cookies painted like the Ukraine flag, they donate that money to the relief efforts. They have raised over 5000 so far. You should at least check this place out to help our neighbors on the other side of the world and also get yourself a little something else. I haven't explored their coffee drinks but I have at their sister store called Quacks. I am assuming their drinks are similarly good. You will find more than enough parking here and they indoor and 2-person table outdoor seating. I've sat outside before and the chairs are okay. They aren't a problem if you are just there for a bit but if you are there with your laptop to study or work, the chairs can get uncomfortable. And it uaually isn't busy here at all so definitely a great place to check out! read more

After leaving Moreno BBQ just up the street, the wife abruptly served in pulled into the parking lot with out Any notice....What the?? I said....She pointed ....Coffee...Bakery...The list is getting large on the cold coffee/bakery side....and I will say this was the most impressive from the bakery stand point....they had just about anything you wanted. Makes it really tuff to choose. After a ton a pacing in front of the beautiful cases I made the move on the Sugared Cinnamon Roll and the wife went with the Cinnamon Pull apart....and of course a couple coffees to go. They were both top notch bakery items. Tender on the inside....Perfect outside....I loved the cinnamon crunch on the Sugared Cinnamon Roll....It wasnt until we got home that we put 2 & 2 together that this place is a spin off of Quaks Bakery, which we love...haven't been in a bit, but we do remember it. Prepare to be judged if you come here! If you're here to enjoy coffee and work/study in peace, beware of being judged based on people's assumptions of you. I used to love coming here by the way. I came to Quack's Bakery (since it's typically a quiet, comfortable spot) to study for a big exam, and all I did was wear a University of Texas hat with an American flag on it to mark Election Day. I thought it'd be a simple, neutral way to show some spirit since it's a big day for the country, no matter who you're voting for. Instead, it felt like I walked into a judgment zone. First, I got a horrified, almost disgusted look from another customer--like I was holding a crucifix to a vampire! I looked away and looked back to see if he was still staring and sure enough he was, with an offended look on his face. But then it got even weirder. About an hour later, I overheard an employee that was by me talking loudly with a customer, and they started going on about people wearing Trump outfits after the election, practically assuming my hat was some kind of statement. It felt like they were talking about me because the customer looked at me before conversing with the employee about that topic. Then, as if I was some kind of villain, I overheard that same worker saying, "I haven't even looked at him all day." Just because I have a manly build and a beard, they decided to judge me without even knowing who I voted for. Funny enough, they would've been happy to hear who I voted for, but that shouldn't even matter! I came here to study in peace, and instead, I left feeling completely judged. If you're looking for a welcoming spot with a neutral vibe, Quack's really isn't it. read more

We are so happy Quack opened a south location! This place is great. It's nice, clean and very spacious (good during the pandemic). There is sanitizer at the entrance and as far as I could tell, all the staff were wearing masks. Everyone is super friendly as well. There is a large sitting room in the back. The main reason we love this place is because there are lots of vegan options (cupcakes, muffins, etc). And delicious cute sugar cookies! My kids love it. There are also outdoor tables and chairs. Bakers warm our hearts with the staff of life. I give this long-time Austin hearth it's due with ocasional visits. It's not as much of a community hub as the Duval one and I hope we can all work on that soon. Their baked items are sort of sweet common fare, well made. Im not fond of their misnamed "croissant,". As you can see, it doesn't have the rolled flaky pattern inside. Croissants are nearly always disappointing to me though, so don't take that as much of a slight. The tea cookies smooth nutty crumbly flavor keeps me coming back. I know that they make a lot of custom orders. (A favorite is the apple rosemary pie). read more

Been here numerous times but will probably not come back. If i was to describe this place in one word, probably be underwhelming. The redeeming quality is the people. They are very friendly and engaging. I have tried a variety of pastries here and at numerous times of the day and unfortunately they were not that good. And dry. Almost like they were old. The coconut cream pie had soo much coconut it was hard to chew, the Cherry pie crust was stale, the key lime pie crust was soo thick that i could barely cur it or eat it with a regular fork. You actually needed a knife with it. Blueberry muffins were fairly average but nothing special, cupcakes were also average. It's too bad. I had high hopes but will most likely have to find another bakery. If you know of another place with coconut cream pie, let me know. I cant seem to find anyone who makes a decent one. read more

I found this place on Yelp while on a mission to find a place with delicious desserts that I could could grab and go. This was the perfect place! Even though I went there in the afternoon, the bakery cases (yes, cases!) were full of an amazing variety of delicious goodies. I went in there looking to get one dessert and left with a bagful. I got a mocha mini cupcake, Nutella thumbprint cookies, a chocolate twist, snickerdoodle, chocolate eclair and a sugar cinnamon bun. Everything was so yummy and the portions are great. My mother told me she meant to have a piece of the snickerdoodle as a pre-dinner snack, but instead ate the whole thing and was too full for dinner :) I can't wait to go back and stuff my face with more of their treats. The Covid precautions here are really good - there is curbside pickup, no indoor dining, there are markers on the floor to keep customers 6 feet apart and hand sanitizer by the door. There are tables and chairs outside for outdoor dining. BTW: Last year, I got Thanksgiving cookies from their other location and they were the perfect decor piece. And they were really tasty, even several days after the holiday. read more

We were so excited to try, and very disappointed with what we got. This is a rough but honest review. Sorry in advance. The desserts we got: Vegan Ganache (Slice) Jumbo Peanut Butter Cupcake The Guava Bar Tiramisu 1 star for friendly service, 1 star for decent tiramisu. Out of 4 desserts that we purchased yesterday only 1 was palatable. What we were most excited about and most disappointed with: the vegan ganache. It was so, so dry and the flavor was not pleasant. The strangest combination: the peanut butter cupcake. It had the most bizarre herb taste in the frosting, like spearmint or something got mixed in by accident. The combination makes my stomach turn just thinking about it. I was so grateful we did not stay to eat at the restaurant because I immediately spit it out after taking a bite. I would have felt terrible doing that in front of the nice employees. The okay but also not okay: the guava bar had good guava flavor but the crust tasted like iron. The only other star: the tiramisu was good and well soaked with coffee, but considering it was pretty average it felt overpriced. My sister and I went for her birthday because she loves desserts and wanted to try various options instead of a traditional cake. It did not turn out to be the experience we hoped. I'm sorry, but we have no interest in returning to this or any Quack's location. I felt bad about not enjoying the desserts, but I felt worse for my sister since these were supposed to be a fun and yummy way to celebrate her birthday. read more

Great little bakery and coffee shop and glad they are in my neighborhood. Use to visit Quacks when I was in the area and now I do not have too. This will be my "go to" when I want baked goods. Last visit was a blueberry scone-not too sweet, nice and buttery. The best off the beaten path spot for a sweet treat and a nice drink. I'm so impressed by their tea offering, as someone who doesn't consume much caffeine. I walked in to great music in the background, conversations happening and the smell of warming spices in the air. I asked what the rich aroma was specifically, and the cashier replied, "we make our own chai in house!" And I knew I'd found a new favorite spot. read more

Some places make you feel welcome and others sound like you're a bother. This was one of those latter experiences. They were quite overwhelmed with a line of 3, mostly people ordering a dessert and a coffee. When our turn came, we requested a cheesecake and a latte. At the counter to pick up our coffee, a gentleman in front of us was trying quite desperately to get a simple answer - I ordered a 16oz but this looks like a 12oz, do I have the right order? The lady making lattes was flustered and flushed and chose to ignore him, which only made him even more politely persistent. Great tea & pastry selection! I'm not much of a tea kinda gal, more of a coffee lover - but the Hibby Hollow herbal tea made my night while being here along with the amazing staff! The pastries are pretty much the same as 43rd St. although there are no savory croissants in the mornings.... there are Fricanos paninis here! & Greencart sandwiches, the regular Mexican coke, Diet Coke & orange & apple juice. All the cakes are the same as well as the cupcakes & cookies. I will definitely be coming here to do homework and hangout when I'm on this side of town for work. Love it! read more

We arrived and parked in a curbside parking spot, then called in our order. They also do contactless payment, and the entire process was so easy! The staff were very kind and sweet. They were able to bring out within a few minutes, so the process was really easy and fast. We ordered 4 cupcakes and 2 hibiscus lemonades. The lemonade was a little tart to my liking, but I added sugar and it tasted so phenomenal. The cupcakes were big and tasted sweet. The cookie dough was a large serving on top, so they did not skip out on making it more than worth it. I definitely could come back, and would love to see the inside environment. So glad that Captain Quackenbush's Coffeehouse has arrived in South Austin. Been there three times and have enjoyed the friendly service, good coffee and nice choice of pastries. The front patio is equipped with lots of chairs. The backdoor leads outside to an array of picnic benches. Restrooms are gender neutral which reduces waiting time -- and they are updated and clean. The music room has been redone with a spacious stage, some comfortable seating and even has bar stools at the new corner counter. Wishing Quacks every success with live music. read more
