So disappointed! My family and I have been coming to Castaway for several years we went yesterday and were in for such a bad experience. We questioned if it was sold due to the changes we had seen and later found out it had been.The service has always been friendly and welcoming this time it was not! We had a large party and had asked if we could sit outside (which we had done always before with the same amount of people) the waitress rudely said No we can't move those tables, without an option to split up our party or anything. She was very abrupt and not engaging at all. As always I ordered the paradise pancakes they were lack luster not much fruit in them like they had before. No lanai sauce was with them and when asked then waitress was not too happy with getting me any. My mom had an ant in her mimosa and when she told another waitress folding napkins she said 'oh you want another one?' No apology or anything. Food was ok service was terrible. We usually frequent there while we are here and that was our first visit of our weeks here and I'm sad to say we will not be back. read more

We have been eating here for years as part of our stay. Firstly the resort MKV is great, mainly because of the smaller feel, less busy than the huge resorts surrounding it, not as many people walking around dressed up to impress each other and the best beach for families in Maui! The Castaway cafe is a hole! Very rude staff dressed in near rags constantly rubbing noses and greasy cheeks and grabbing your dinner plates and glasses right after. Language barrier for almost 1/4 of the serving staff! Food was the worst we have ever had. Pasta night is a scam and worst pasta ever is $26.00, ouch! (for two). Our family of nine ate the pasta and everyone was puking and sick for the next day!!!! The returned our money but why can't they just cook their food properly and not serve week old meat balls cold. If I eat there again it will be to soon. read more

We had a party on the back patio with out anyone out there. It took over 15 minutes to our drink order. Our salads were served with our entrees. The food was just OK nothing special. At the end to top off the worst service on Maui we had to wait for our check and after 15 minutes I had to go and wake our waitress up so I could pay. The manage did walk me out but did nothing I did tell the best thing she could do is fire our waitress as she is the worst server on Maui. read more

Saturday night is prime rib night wasn't happy ..asked for a medium rare received a well done wanted to return it but they told me all they had was well done at 7:30.. I wish they would've told me that at the very beginning of ordering ,Also I had to ask twice what size servings they were serving ..! I have been eating breakfast at the Castaway for over 10 years. It has always been one of my favorite breakfast spots in Kaanapali. However under new ownership the portions have become so skimpy that I will not likely return. I do not understand why a restaurant would skimp on inexpensive items like hash browns and toast to save a couple of cents while losing long time customers. My latest breakfast just serve today was overcooked eggs, four small rounds of Portuguese sausage, a 2x4 inch square of hash browns, and one piece of toast. I never got the orange juice that I asked for. I was disappointed! read more

Prices and location are good. Service is cold, grumpy and argumentative. Don't expect too much aloha spirit at this place. If your 4 year old daughter accidentally knocks over your wive's water, I suggest you don't dare to ask for a napkin or cloth to mop it up. Your waitress will stone wall you and then start telling the bar staff in an exasperated tone that she put a lid on the water (true for my daughter's water), while in the mean time my wive's un-lidded water is dripping over her and her belongings. All I did was ask for a cloth/napkin to clean up the mess myself, and rather than help I got a really stinky attitude in its place. read more

Great ocean-side dining. Reasonable prices and a good menu. The food was delicious and very nicely presented. We ate there for breakfast every day of our week-long stay in Maui. Only had one awkward experience, when we asked a novice hostess to be seated outside and she said "no", then promptly seated the next party outside. We were seated for dinner promptly and ordered right away. So far, so good. We were served our salads about 20 minutes later. We then waiting 45 minutes and asked the waiter to please check our order. He came back and said it would be out soon. After 1 hour, still no entree. I spoke to the cafe mNager and she seemed surprised and said she would check. After 1 hour and 15 minutes, we got up and left. read more

Only so-so. Very much like eating at Denny's. Nothing was bad so-to-speak, just not great. I would highly recommend Duke's about a mile north along the beach, or better yet, Slappy Cakes about a 7 min drive north. read more

Staying at the Kaanapali Villas in April 2011 with a baby that goes to sleep at 6:30 so needed somewhere close by where we could get food to go. We went with Castaway since it's right on premises. I had a yummy piña colada during happy hour on the patio which was nice. However, my chicken quesadillas for dinner were just ok, the salsa tasted like it had refrigerator burn, and my onion rings came without ketchup. read more

If you're staying in ka'anapali you can walk here on the beach path. A local recommended it after hearing that we went to the other well known Mac nut pancake place and waited in line for 30+ minutes. I liked the pancakes here better (more firm, less airy), but I liked the cream topping better at the other place. Still, this place doesn't have a wait. The hash browns an eggs were also really good. All in all a solid place for breakfast. read more

We've been here a couple times before and decided to return for their reasonable prices and proximity to the Westin. Unfortunately during this visit we were disappointed in the service. Although we were seated promptly, we sat at our table for almost 15 minutes before we had to flag someone down to get water. The waitress served us our water and then promptly left, causing us to flag her down again to order, even though we already knew what we wanted upon arrival of the water. We ordered our food and asked for juices and coffee but then sat waiting another 10 mins before flagging down the manager. She was responsive however our food did not come out as ordered. Two of us got poached eggs and they were pretty much hard boiled. Hash browns were burnt. The manager was nice and attempted to remediate the situation but I do not think we will be returning during our next trip. read more

We come here for breakfast nearly every day whenever we are in Maui. I've been making trips here for 10 years and their Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice are always on my breakfast list. Friendly staff, great food, and a beautiful view make this place a keeper. The only downside is that it's a bit of a walk if you're not staying at the Villas (the parking is for guests only so you have to park in the public park by the Westin). However, it's a beautiful beach walk so we never mind it. read more

We have been going here for breakfast for 15 years. It was our favorite breakfast place on Maui. We tried it twice this week and we were very disappointed. The food was bad enough we won't go back even though it's been our favorite walk and location. We ordered our eggs over hard but somehow they managed to serve them with the whites not completely cooked. We could not eat the hash browns. I am pretty sure they were old and reheated. The French toast was not cooked through. We were served burnt coffee and dumped it on the grass. Our 2nd cup was unfortunately also bad. We hope the new owner reads this because we really hope it improves so we can return. read more

Wish I could give o stars! We have been coming here as a family forover 20 years! We had no idea there was new ownership......but something was different! Breakfast was disgusting. Pancake had been precooked, wasn't even browned. Was like cold rubber.....hash browns cold, hard . Some of our favorite servers remained. The Asian guy we had was SO rude. Took our order and did NOT stop at table again until dropping check off. We have truly had better food at Denny's . SO SAD!!!!!! read more

My whole family loves this place! We go multiple times every time we go to Maui. The huevos rancheros are delicious! The macadamia nut pancakes are amazing! Make sure to get the coconut syrup and or lanai sauce! The view is gorgeous! It's a great place for kids, because there's a grassy area that they can run around on if they are getting antsy while the parents finish eating dinner. read more

This is our second trip, and sadly enough our last. We came here in January and now December. Same bad service, same bad food. First time we waited a long time for both service and food. We saw others arrive after us, order before us eat and leave. Excuse was last time that one grill was down. My husband & I have been patrons for years & have seen many changes at Castaway. We are thrilled at the new management & what fabulous energy they bring to the venue. You already have one of the best locations for ambiance on the west side. We have been to Maui four times and love it there. The Castaway Cafe is on Kaanapali Beach and on the property where we stay. Their food is great as well as the whole staffThe bartenders Barry, Sue and several others are so much fun! Smiling faces always and are in charge of fun!! While the view is pretty, the food is well below expectations. On the day that my family was there we ordered a pineapple fruit boat and they proceeded to inform us that they were out of pineapple. When the fruit that was supposed to come in the center of the pineapple arrived, it was slimy and sour. The pancakes were very plain and nothing to write home about. The meat that you could order in addition to the pancakes themselves, for an addition $4, ended up being four tiny slices. Went in for dinner on Sunday night and it was great! We had a perfect seat for sunset and had the ribs special and I had the Monchong special. Both entrees were delicious AND cooked perfectly! Something that's hard to find in Maui! I tried the trio of white wine for a little tasting and it was great! I was really impressed with the wine list they have. This is great location. They have always had an exceptional breakfast and people come here just for the cinnamon french toast. We went today and discovered that there was a new owner; that the menu had changed; and to our dismay the famous cinnamon french toast is gone. We had omelettes. They were good but the hash browns were not good. It seemed like they were cooked at 1000 degrees for 30 seconds - pretty black and crispy on the outside white and mushy on the inside. The staff was still friendly and it is still a great location. Perhaps the new management will take a second look and restore some of the things that were drawing in customers. read more

Great location, terrible food. We both had the coconut shrimp and it was horrible. It's hard to be in Maui on the ocean and eat frozen coconut shrimp. We only ate 2 pieces and we were both up all night with stomach issues. The restaurant did take the charge off our bill and came and talked to us, so it was handled nicely by staff. I'm impressed! Normally hotel restaurants are not very good - I remember trying one inside of Mandalay Bay the last time I was in Vegas assuming b/c it was an expensive hotel that it would be good - I was very wrong & not happy about the amount of $ I spent on an awful meal. So to say the least I had very low expectations of this restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by their fish & chips - yum! My fiancé got a bacon cheeseburger & he actually said it was the best burger he's ever had - that's saying a lot b/c he basically only eats burgers... I guess you could say he's a burger connoisseur. The drinks are great too & only around $6.50 - cheap compared to the Bay Area! All around happy w/ everything this place has to offer! Hotels been great too! Got a great deal on our stay & couldn't be happier w/ the accommodations - our room is one of the studio garden suites which is the cheaper of the rooms but it's really nice & has a full kitchen! We've been coming to the Ka'anapali Villas for many years, and the Castaway was part of the charm and convenience of this property. We loved the fact that the kids could order, we could have an opened tab all day, the food was excellent and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case, we used to order platters of Calamari and French fries while at the pool, and it was always delicious. I learned from my daughter that they put sauce on it now and it was soggy, so I ordered mine without the sauce. What I got was a slab of processed white compressed rubber that tasted like some petroleum product. It was gawd awful. The cup of coleslaw was warm, wilted, and far from fresh. I will say the breakfast was decent, but the prices are ridiculous for just about everything. The new owners have ruined this gem, which is a shame because I love the property and the beach. read more

The Castaway Cafe is a great place to spend any part of your day! The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing whether you dine indoors or on the patio. The ocean view is breathtaking. The afternoon live music is perfect. The food and drinks look great and taste fresh and delicious. The menu offers selections for everyone to enjoy. I was amazed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the managers and staff. Our group returned to Castaway Cafe several times during our stay on Maui. You will love this place! read more

Have been visiting Castaways for over 25 years now and as with any resort restaurant it's had its up and downs. The past few years it seamed to be getting tired. Now there is new ownership which has brought in a new chef and general manager who have really upped the energy and quality. We ate there several times on our last visit. Can't wait to get back.
