Dined here as part of a group of 4. We were all in the mood for some good Peruvian food. I live in Miami and already have a few good spots that I enjoy dining at, but our friends were visiting from Germany and staying on South Beach. Therefore, we decided to find a new spot on the beach. After a quick yelp search we decided upon Chalan. We were seated very fast. It was a Wednesday evening around 8:30pm. The restaurant was full of people. We ordered the Tallerines verdes with steak, the fish ceviche, lomo saltado and fried fish. The fried fish and tallerines verdes were just ok. They were lacking in flavor. We've definitely had better at other spots in Downtown Miami. The ceviche and lomo saltado were a little better than the other two dishes but still not great. The service was good, however, so no complaints there. Unfortunately won't be dining here again. read more

5 star for the food! My company and I shared Chicharron de pescado and Lomo fino con tacu tacu. The portion size was huge, so it was regretful that we had to leave some although the food was amazing. Chicharron de pescado was crispy, and the fish was fresh and delicious. It came with a lot of lime wedges, which I prefer to tartar sauce. Lomo was tender and generous serving. Tacu tacu was crispy outside and moist inside, so it was hard to stop my fork. The service was decent, though they made minor mistake with the check (they initially charged for vase of lemonade although we had only a glass). Overall we were very satisfied. I'd like to definitely come back whenever we are traveling to Miami Beach. read more

The seafood soup and fried snapper was over the top. Everything in the menu looked good. Except the tres leches cake. It was terrible. I think they buy all their desserts from a third party vendor. I've never had Peruvian food before, but the food I had here makes me excited to see what else this type of cuisine has to offer. They ran it of Their famous ceviche, and there is a clearly miscommunication between the kitchen and servers because I watched over the course of the night as waiters would offer the ceviche only to come back 20 minutes later to share the sad news. The grilled octopus is amazing and the fish soup with noodles are also clean and delicious. Service is really slow and other diners around me seemed to get frustrated, but I think it's worth the wait. You may wait 30 minutes before your apps come, so have that it mind. We went there hoping to have some awesome Peruvian food because all the online reviews are so good. But after trying the signature dish Lomo Saltado, I was sooo disappointed. I mean the beef was alright, all being big chunks of meat. But the onion was nearly raw and thus gave a unpleasant strong taste. The ingredients didn't go well with each other. This place is always crowded every time I walk by. The menu is (slightly excessively) extensive. It took us about 10 minutes to look over the menu. Eventually I decided on the standard ceviche. I'm the type of person who notices other patrons and the service they are receiving along with my own. So I was a little irked that other tables were served bread baskets when they sat down, while we did not. I asked about a basket when I was able to flag down a waiter, and one was brought out. It's a little annoying to have to be the only table that has to ask for something that everyone else gets automatically. When the ceviche finally arrived, it looked beautiful. The fish was fresh, the varieties of corn delicious, and the citrus juice/sauce was wonderfully spicy. However, this was a double-edged sword since we needed water, and trying to flag one down took us a painful 10 minutes. They were fairly busy with very few empty tables, but the waitstaff walked past our table more than 15 times without even looking to check on us. The food is good, service could be better. read more

Why is this place rated so high? The ceviche is below average: the quality of the crustaceans and fish used in the ceviche had curious textures and didn't seem fresh. The marinade was imbalanced and the dish was a chore to finish. The cooked foods are heavy with wayyyy too much cream / crème fraîche. ASK FOR LOMO SALTADO! DECOR: Nice and clean and attracts the beach crowd. Thanks to its proximity to the beach, Washington Avenue and Miami transport. FOOD: Ordered the Lomo Saltado after reading its review on Yelp and the dish was so so so yummy. I totally loved it. The quantity was generous and two of us could comfortably finish it. I shouldn't have ordered the Ice Tea. It is served without sugar (sugar comes on the side and you can add it to make it sweet). Even after adding sugar, it did not taste good. One glass Ice Tea serves two- three as it is served as 1 glass plus a small pitcher that holds 2 glasses of ice tea. SERVICE: Our food came within 15 mins from the time ordered. The waitress was polite. PRICE: Our total was $16 without tip because two of us shared one dish. The restaurant includes gratuity amount in the total bill. read more

I'm limiting my self flagellation to 39 strokes for not eating here until recently after living in SOBE for so many years - I can't believe what I've been missing. Maybe it's a good thing I only recently discovered Chalans because I'd probably be 50 pounds heavier from eating here every day and consuming the large portions of amazing food. The food here is so awesome - it's like living a few blocks from Versailles - and being close to good home cooked food. First off, for ice tea lovers, they bring your ice tea in a big glass with an accompanying filled carafe and a plate with lime slices and the ice tea is freshly brewed and rates a 10. The daily lunch specials (Monday -Friday: 11AM to 3:00 PM) are only $7.95 and the portions are huge. They come with hot rolls with an interesting spicy green sauce, an unbelievably delicious bowl of soup (different soup each day of the week) and main courses like chicken with rice, beef stew with rice, breaded chicken, fried fish fillet, etc. and the daily specials all come with rice and vegetables. I've tried the specials for every day of the week and they are all good. They also have huge sandwiches - which taste great - and are only $5.95 to 7.95 The food is Peruvian and the menu is extensive with a large selection of fish and meats. Most entrees can feed at least 2 people. The Sangria is excellent. I've eaten here a few times for dinner and had the Lomo Saltado, Fried Rice Peruvian Style and the arroz con mariscos - all very good and highly recommended. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that the ambiance is very casual and diner like but who cares when the food is this good. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the desserts - they come in plastic dishes/bowls and are not made on-site - but who cares because you are usually so stuffed from the lunch or dinner entrees that you can't eat desert anyways. read more

The staff is so friendly. I called around 4pm to make reservations at 6pm for 10 people and they had a nice big table ready for us in the back room. First off, I can eat their complimentary bread and spicy cilantro sauce all day long. They were happy to give our table extra of this sauce. (Versus other restaurants where they give you the stink eye and try to charge you for it). I ordered the Lomo Saltado and Arroz con Mariscos and the waitress gave me a weird look and said how are you going to fit all that in you? You are tiny. The portions are huge. You can probably share one dish between 3 people. The prices are very affordable especially considering portions. If you're here on vacation, don't leave without going here!! It's right on the corner of Washington and 16th, very easy to find. The Miami Local is only 25 cents and takes you all along Washington! read more

I was craving seafood and hubby recommended this place since he'd been here before. The menu was HUGE and I had a really hard time deciding what to have. It seemed like a lot of the dishes were similar with one or 2 ingredients that were different! Hubby had the ceviche he dreams about! He loved it! I had the tacu tacu with fish and shrimp. It took a REALLY long time coming! Hubby was halfway through the huge helping of ceviche when I got it. And that was after I asked about it! It was really good though. The tacu tacu is a cake of rice and white beans that's fried. The green sauce gave it some heat that was great. Also got a side of fried corn that I wasnt crazy about. I got the chicha morada to drink and really liked it. It wasn't cloyingly sweet like what I've had before. It's not made in house but comes out of a bottle. I also had the vanilla flan which had the perfect texture and delicious. Hubby got the tres leches with lucuma. The lucuma is an interesting fruit you get in Peru. Nice causal spot to try traditional Peruvian dishes. We got recommendations from the server to help us select off the large menu. I got the pollo saltado and my husband got the fried rice with chicken. These plates are huge so if you can't take leftovers to go I would suggest doing family style sharing. To her credit, the waitress warned us of this, but we were stubborn and hungry so didn't take her advice. My dish was good, the chicken was tender and well seasoned and it was flavorful. The spicy green sauce on the side of our dishes was the most spicy one we had tried. The place is casual and doesn't get any ambiance points but it serves it's purpose. A downside is the smell of cleaning product was kind of strong in the restaurant too. We came in right at the start of lunch and this place got busy quickly. Aside from a happy host who greeted us at the door, all the staff were rude and unattentive as if they were purposely ignoring us even after walking by and seeing us trying to flag them down multiple times. When we finally got attention of a staff to take our order, he mumbled something into a small earpiece, then just walked away. Bread basket was never brought out so took us another10 mins to flag down another waiter and get some bread. Our waiter was nice but she didnt bother to check on us until after our meal was over. More importantly, the food was not even impressive. Lomo Saltado lacked flavor and meat was overcooked. Aguadito De Pescado had a fishy taste. This is a super popular spot that seemed more full of locals than tourists. The place was packed and as we stayed very close, we walked by on numerous days to observe that the place was ALWAYS busy. The food was hot, plentiful, delicious and not super expensive with a lot of choices. I really appreciate picture menus and this one is great with tons of variety. Almost too many choices since it took a while to decide. The service was quick, friendly and efficient even though we were major slowpokes in actually ordering. Kudos to our server who showed no signs of impatience - I know I would have been like 'gaaaahhhh, can these people be any slower - time is money.' The name 'on the beach' is a little deceiving. It is NOT actually 'on the beach' but is a few blocks away. My friend suggested a traditional Peruvian appetizer that consists of a cold sliced potato topped with this amazing yellow sauce which he ordered in Spanish. I don't know that it's actually even listed on their menu. That sauce teamed up with cold potato, was DYNAMITE! Not even kidding. It was sort of like do it yourself potato salad but with this amazing sauce. I never thought I could be so excited over a cold potato! My entrée - a chicken dish that had a similar sauce was pretty good - but fairly plain. My friend got a beef dish that had ingredients similar to fajitas but without the Mexican spices. I can't recall what the name of it was - sorry Yelpers. But I tried a bite of the beef and it just melted in my mouth - very tender and marinated in something yummy. If we are that way again, I would definitely stop here and get that beef dish. read more

We stumbled upon this place and it was a good thing. From what we could tell this restaurant is mostly a favorite of the locals even though it's not too, too far from the main tourist drag. I'll just say the lomo saltado was the best I've ever had. Usually the beef in this dish is an afterthought. Here it was the main attraction, tender and bursting with flavor. We also had a sea food dish (pescado sudado mixto) which was quite good and a fried fish app that was so fresh and perfectly fried it practically melted in your mouth. The service was super friendly and the ambiance warm, casual, and inviting. We'll certainly be back to try some other things next time we're in Miami. read more

Okay, so I'm from the DC metro area and after my one-week trip to Miami (with two times dining at Chalan), I wish I had a Chalan on the Beach in Washington DC, or Northern Virginia, whatever it is. The first time I went there with a group of friends and waited 10 minutes for a table. The table was close to the entrance door - which wasn't what I really wanted, but since it was dinner time and we had six people, I couldn't complain. Hot bread, butter and that oh-so-amazing jalapeno sauce (chimichurri?) were quickly served on the table. I don't know if it's the right way to eat that sauce but I just dipped the bread with butter in it. It tasted heavenly. I also dipped almost everything else in that amazing sauce. We ordered lomo saltado, jalae mixta, spinach pasta with fried chicken, seafood pasta, steak sandwiches and a fish soup dish. All of them were excellent. Jalae mixta was a plate of battered seafood, in which the calamari tasted the freshest. Spinach pasta was pasta mixed in grounded spinach bits- tasted interesting. Steak sandwiches was a bang for the buck - I believe it's the cheapest thing on the menu and the amount was still generous. Lomo saltado was arguably the best dish, I have no words to describe its taste :). The rice was a little bit dry but it went well with the stir-fried sauce. The second time at Chalan I had a breaded steak, it was ok but not excellent, the meat got cold and tough very quickly. My friend ordered a seafood tomato mixture dish with rice, not sure what its called, but it tasted awesome, probably as excellent as lomo saltado. Service was quick and friendly, they refilled water cups very often. Atmosphere is better than many other places at competitive prices and cleaner, cozier dining area. If I go to Miami Beach the next time, I believe I would dine in Chalan everyday. read more

We come to Miami at the Lowe's Hotel Resort every year and we always come to this restaurant for a homey Peruvian food. My favorite is always their octopus ceviche made fresh. This was a great spot when craving ceviche. Not much of Peruvian selection in the South Beach area but this was a nice casual gem. Reasonably priced for the area. You ask for spicy and they'll give you an orange/red sauce to spice it up as you like. I loved the green sauce that they bring with the hot fresh bread. So good. When I first walked in, I was not acknowledged and thought I was in for disappointing service. However, my waitress was fantastic! I wish I got her name. I recently walked into this restaurant and was ignored. I was told to find a seat and someone would take care of me 5 minutes later. The restaurant had a moderate amount of people but not enough for me to not even receive a menu 15 minutes later. I however noticed that a Hispanic looking couple who walked in after me were immediately giving drinks and bread. When I complained in Spanish this immediately got the attention of one of the servers who quickly took my order. This happened to me several times through the year but the most recent was a month ago. People need to realize that "Hispanics" come in all shades and colors and everyone deserves equal treatment. Reasonably priced, attentive service, interior need of an uplift (unless if it wants to keep its hole-in-the-wall look). As for food, it's just okay, but I think I've been spoiled by Ceviche 105 in downtown Miami which sports better interior, less greasy food, more variety (at least for desserts), but worse service. But the food here is still okay. And they really need to start getting rid of those old stale Cuban breads they serve as a complimentary starter. read more

My friend and I were in Miami for 3.5 days, and we ate here twice. That's how good it was. We wanted seafood, so I Yelped for it, and this place came up. So, we went to try it! We weren't disappointed! We got the platter with a ton of seafood on it (fried fish, potatoes, grilled calamari, grilled onions, grilled mussels). It also came with house-made tar tar sauce. It was delicious, although a little bit pricey ($25 pre-tax). The service was great this time; the waiter kept coming back to refill our water, and she was really friendly. The second time we came, we ordered a fish and calamari ceviche with hot sauce on the side. The ceviche comes with corn, fried corn nuts I believe, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. It was so good. The flavor was amazing! We also ordered the beef with rice. It was a bit salty, but still tasty. It had fries, beef, and onions, along with rice. The service wasn't as good, but it might have been due to the seating (away from the main counter). But they should have at least served us water without us asking for it! Had the tropical fish platter! So good! It came with a whole fish that was breaded and fried, topped with shrimp cooked in a garlic sauce. There was also a slice of orange, pineapple and fried potato. Came with a side of yellow rice. I also had the seafood paella. Very tasty but way to much food for one person. It's heavy on the rice so I would only recommend this dish if you are super hungry or a real big eater... The place is pretty big and can accommodate large groups. We were in a hurry that day too and our food came really quickly, around 15 mins. Great Peruvian food over all. I'll defintiely be back next time to try the different dishes. read more

Being brand new to the area, I decided to explore places to eat. We were walking around Lincoln Road and decided to check this place out due to the reviews. My review will be based on my two visits here and what we ordered. Both times I've been here the service was ok. It wasn't as fast in terms of turn over but it wasn't the worst. It took longer to get the check and pay than to get your order in and delivered to your table. The food is absolutely amazing with HUGE portions! It's well worth it. I've tried the lomo saltado, which is good! My friend order the fried rice and boy was it HUGE. The second time I ordered a Sangria and ceviche. It was good. Great little spot right in around the bend from the Lincoln road mall touristy traps. They're very accommodating with kids and low key. The food here is delectable, unpretentious and packed with flavor. The servers are sweet, attentive and give good suggestions to newbies and if you are returning like us then more yum fare for you to try. We ordered the fish abs shrimp ceviche, fried shrimp with yuca fries, camerones aijuidos, and pescado al chalan. They start you out with mini bread rolls butter and two spicy sauces ( the red one is pretty hot but the green one is mild and tangy). The seafood does take a while to come out but sometimes local performers come around to entertain you with songs while you wait. If you care to enjoy it...then consider tipping these sweet old people trying to make a living, which is their source of income. All in all a great Peruvian joint with lots of heart. read more

I loved this restaurant. I highly recommend it, if you like seafood at good price. It's small, not fancy, the service could be better, but the food is AMAZING. We went there twice during our one week stay there. We got mixed seafood in a flavorful sauce (not sure the name, but the second one under seafood section on the menu), very generous portion with a lot of octopus, squid, mussels. My husband got fish and shrimp in garlic source - the fish was panfried and very tender and flavorful. The second time we got mixed seafood with mushroom and sauce; delicious! We also tried beef stew; meaty and tasty. I also loved their smoothie (more like thick juice). $11 for a pitcher. Orange and mango combination is fantastic, so is the pineapple and mango combination. Delicious traditional Peruvian food done right! My partner and I shared an order of the Chalan Combo at the suggestion of our server and it was spot on. The beef was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender. The white beans, runny eggs and rice complemented the meal. We also had the Cilantro Seafood Soup, a delectable balance of muscles, fish and squid soaked in the most comforting tasting broth.
