Not my favorite place. The fish and chips are good, but that's really all the food that I know of the place. I've been here twice in my life; the first time being over 10 years ago. We went last night for a "family dinner" - there were 10 of us all together. 5 of us stood in line waiting to put in an order for 45 minutes while I sat downstairs with 4 kids who got increasingly fidgety and hungry. Two orders of fish and chips, a kids fish and chips, and a kids grilled cheese sandwich came to $52. That's a lot of money for something that's served on a plastic plate. Yes, the fish is fresh, so that comes with a price. I get that. But it was still a costly night out that required a long wait in line. Due to its location, it's a huge tourist stop. I'm sure there are plenty of locals who go here (or in my case, my husband's family used to come here all the time 30+ years ago so for them it's nostalgic), but I'd say it's 75% tourist. Still, the food was decent and the view was nice. So for an expensive yet informal night out, it was good. read more

The restaurant is exactly as advertised - casual dockside atmosphere for enjoying a decent meal inside or outside. For the most part, the seafood is well above average standard fare. Hard to go wrong with most of the selections - the batter on the fried food is not overpowering at all. Family-friendly and non-pretentious, so come as you are. Thank god, during the dead of winter, you can always rely on Champlain's. Today at 4:00pm I shuffled up the stairs, ordered our usual meal. One pint clear Rhode Island chowder, 6/Clamcakes and a lobster roll. I received the order promptly and forged my way down the stairs out to our car to enjoy our meal. Opening the chowder first I dipped for my first spoonful. Never have I ever eaten chowder mush. Potato cubes quickly dissolving as I attempt to pick up a spoonful. Clam mush ....... How long.... Hours.... Days .... Weeks has this been cooking. Sad they would serve this ! Then I tried the clam cakes. Can't find a clam bit anyway.... 1,2,3,4,5,6. Not a clam piece in sight ..... no clam flavor !! Lobster roll was ok but what a disappointment. Guess it's tourist season no need to keep the quality up to par. Being from out of town we wanted to experience the local seafood while in Rhode Island. This place did not let us down! Do not expect a sit down wine and dine place. You go to the window and place your order. This is a true seafood restaurant right off the boat with the fisherman at the bar enjoying a beer telling tales. Husband ordered a combo platter and I ordered the coconut shrimp along with some New England clam chowder. I looked at my husband one time and when I looked back I couldn't believe the amount of food he had eaten. When I asked him he said I didn't realize it but I couldn't stop once I started it was that good. I offered him some tarter sauce and he said I wouldn't want to garbage up my fish with that!! Needless to say the platter was a hit! My coconut shrimp was good I ordered it with red potatoes. The clam chowder was ok, with living in California we are spoiled with splash cafe and honestly haven't found another like it. The best thing was they allowed our dog to sit with us at the outside tables! Prices well I think it was a little expensive $60.00 for a fast food kind of style restaurant. This place Is very near and dear to my heart. My parents took me here the day before I moved into the dorms at URI back in 2002. Since college I moved to NY and I recently took my husband here during a vacation in RI.... nothing has changed and that's a good thing!! The food is fresh, casual and delicious, you can't go wrong with a steamed lobster dinner and a cup of clam chowder. I think it's the perfect meal. The service is great, everyone that works there is nice and accommodating. I recommend this place for anyone that is in RI! read more

August 25, 2018 - some locals told us to try this restaurant, they were even nice enough to show us the way and chat with us. When we arrived we saw a nice homemade ice cream place at the bottom of the restaurant. As we went up the stair to the restaurant you could see the water and parking area. My cousin and I ordered $2 per Oysters (they tasted so good)!! I didn't get a chance to take pictures of all the food we ordered but everyone liked it. We ordered Lobster rolls, and Lobster Bisque. My order had a lot of meat so much I shared with my cousin and also put some in my Lobster Bisque. We had the same order. But my order seemed to have much more meat. It was all very good and filling. Went here with my parents and GF on their recommendation. It seemed expensive at first, but the portions are rather large. Definitely one of those "I'd rather pay less and get less" situations. It is a no frills place, so certainly not a date venue. Primarily fried stuff it seems, though there are other options. Picnic tables, paper plates, plastic ware, plastic trays, a few beer options. Good views, and the lighthouse /shore are nearby for gettin yer strollin on. read more

I always wanted to eat here and finally did. Ordered the fried clam strips with sweet potatoe fries. Absolutely fantastic, lots of clams, you need to ask for extra tartar sauce and a take home box. The fries are $3 extra. I was not a fan of their lobster bisque. $6.99 Took 2 spoonfuls and threw it out. Soup is not their specialty. Champlin's is a charming and deceivingly delicious place to grab a casual seafood dinner. The menu includes all your favorite fried seafood items like fried clams, fried scallops or fish and chips plus a variety of salad and sandwich and burger options. My nieces and nephews all got chicken tenders and were happy as little clams. The food is generously portions and tastes fresh, crisp and light. Not too heavy on the batter. Really great place for not a lot of money. It's also a nice experience to enjoy your food out of the deck, the sea air hitting you and the ocean smell wafting around you. I went with my family 7/22/23 here and at first I received the wrong order. Now my order comes in and it smelled like burnt grease. So I had a fried scallop meal, seafood platter, cheese burger, lobster bisque, small etc. My daughter and mother got sick with a headache, stomach ache and they threw up. We have been going to Champlin's for years and always enjoy the fresh " right off the boat" seafood. However I took my family tonight and was very disappointed and uncomfortable with their casual handling of Covid. Too many people were hanging around, no masks and no regard for other patrons. A large group of "partiers" arrived off a boat and took over the side of the restaurant and forced us and others from our tables with their rude behavior. Champlin's , having been in business forever should never have allowed this to happen and need to take a better look at how they handle larger groups that don't care about Covid and others. read more

This is a quintessential seaside restaurant with a beautiful view of the harbor and the fishing boats as well as the Long Island Ferry that come and go almost all the time while you dine. It is a walk-up restaurant ,you go to the front, place your order and wait for your number to be called, there is no wait staff. The fried seafood is superb, a very lite breading and gigantic portions with a very modest amount of french fries, your dish will be 97% seafood 3% fries. There are other notable fried seafood stops in Galilee but none compare to Champlin's in my opinion. read more

Champlin's is a southern RI institution when it comes to clamcakes and chowder. You can order it, and then eat it on the rocks, waving to passing fishing boats. Their fried fare, clam strips and bellies, and the stuffies, are good too. I really, really like their snail salad, found in the fish market below. It's not too pricey, it's about standard for everywhere in the area. Parking is rough, but if you can find it, it's well worth it. There's a candy/ice cream place below (don't know what it's called), and Champlin's has an fish market in case you want to buy fresh seafood, right off the boats. read more

I read about Champlin's in Saveur Magazine. I'm glad I went specifically for the fried oysters. They were divine - there's no faking when seafood has been caught within hours of when you're eating it. Seafood in the rough at its best. Champlin's seafood has a winning combo of superior seafood and gorgeous views overlooking the channel into Galilee fishing village. Flip flops, bathing suits, summer casual, dinner attire - you see all kinds here. You do have to work a bit for your meal a bit, starting with a very steep flight of stairs. This location is not a ideal destination for disabled / elderly or wheelchair/stroller bound. To the best of my knowledge, there is no alternative access to the ordering and dining area. A good way around that? Find some seating at the picnic benches near the boardwalk and bring the food down. Line up, look at the menu board and come up with your order before getting to the window so that you can spread joy and happiness to those in line behind you who know exactly what they want to order. Food only at the first window. Drinks? Separate order. Step over to the left with your number tickie and get yourself a nice cocktail , beer, wine or soft drink with full bar service. Find your seat and wait patiently for your number to be called as the kitchen prepares your goodly treasures from the sea. A recent renovation features freshly finished tables and benches inside the sheltered dining hall. We always choose a booth outside so we can watch the ferry and the fishing boats while enjoying the salty breezes. Bring a sweat shirt or jacket as the outdoor seating makes the complete experience here. Favorite menu items: the classic over-filled lobster roll on the buttered hot dog bun, fish and chips and the RI chowder (clear broth base filled with huge piece of quoahog, taters, and onions - yum). Also veered off the fave list and ordered stuffed flounder and it was really, really fantastic. Could have easily split the order of two servings in the order with the steamed and buttered red potatoes. Lobster roll, stuffed flounder dinner, order of fries, chowder, clam cakes soda and a Sam Summer totalled about $50. Not a cheap date, but so worth it...and a must visit stop of summer. read more

Although indoor dining is available now in Rhode Island, there is nothing better than picking up the freshest possible seafood and cooking at home. We have gone here for years and have even ordered seafood to be sent to family far from the ocean - their customer service is incredibly helpful in making sure that orders go out to maximize fresh delivery (I imagine it's a little tougher right now with the pandemic). Last night we picked up clambakes (you need to order 24 hours in advance) and came home with a vented tin with live lobsters, steamers, mussels, veggies (corn on the cob, potatoes, onions and carrots) and fish-wrapped sausages. The tin goes on the stovetop or grill - just add water - and 25 minutes later you have a delicious feast! Everything comes out perfect. You can't beat the price or the quality or the convenience. Even during the COVID 19 pandemic this place doesn't disappoint. Hubby got the fried scallops. Generous portion of scallops with a light batter. Very tasty. I got the coconut shrimp. They were a good size and nicely flavored. I wanted more than the 8 that came in the order. We both got the potatoes crisps which you can tell are homemade. Love that. They could have used a little seasoning but otherwise very yummy. Each order came with coleslaw, I'm not a fan but hubby said it was very fresh and light. We've never eaten here before, sticking with other local establishments. But Champlin's will definitely be part of our next trip to the beaches. read more

Good place. It's a little on the pricey side, in my opinion. But the food quality is very good and the view from the table is outstanding. Started off my meal with a cup of New England Clam Chowder. Gooooddd chowda. Very impressed. For dinner, I chose the steamed clams with a side of onion rings while my traveling companion had a tuna roll. All food was fresh, hot and tasty. However, my friend's corn on the cob had some sort of a film on it that made it distasteful. When pointed out to staff, it was immediately replaced. Small bar near the counter. Friendly service all around. We could see just why this place is an institution in RI. Parking is a little ugly here. But once parked, they'll let you stay for two hours. Go for dessert downstairs at the ice cream shop and you'll be thrilled. We'd go back. It's a nice little place. By far worst clams and worst customer service. Was given steamed clams loaded with dirt, to the point where I couldn't eat them. Then I find this clam loaded with dirt. Is this even real?( see attached photo) My girlfriend goes and shows the staff someone comes out of the kitchen and says this is normal!!! How can a clam fillets to the rim in black mud be normal? I don't know if it was the night that I went, but I felt I the service was below average for a business that had been open as long as they have. I had to ask for a cleaning rag to wipe off the table that I sat at. My dinner was lukewarm at best and I found a hair in the breading of my sea scallops. The did offer to make me a new order, but I couldn't eat anything fried after getting that hair. Instead I ordered a few minutes later a cup of lobster bisque and new England clam chowder. I got the lobster bisque but had to return the clam chowder because they gave me Manhattan clam chowder. I finally got the right chowder, but the wait was over 15 minutes for the both of them. The rest of my party thought that everything was good. And I admit I the new England claim chowder was very good. If you aren't so familiar with New England, let me just start by saying some summer time, the seafood is extremely fresh. I was counting down the minute to head home and have some lobster, to be specific, a lobstah roll. So while at work on Friday, even though it was the end of the month, I still found myself Googling: 'best lobster roll in RI." This is when Serious Eats came up with a listing of the best lobster rolls, in RI, Maine and Massachusetts. I'm immediately targeted the RI locations and started to educate myself. After reading the through the three locations, I decided Champlins was the winner. Now disclaimer for anyone who just spent three and half hours on a train and wants to be waited on, this is not the restaurant to head to. Yes, there is a fabulous view and nothing screams New England like this joint, but it's very similar to McDonalds in the sense, that you head to the window, place your order and they call your number over the loud speaker. Which is all well in good but make sure you have someone park the car while you go wait in line, which is exactly what we did. We had arrived around 7:45 and the line was around the corner and out the door. But since this was my pick for dinner we were waitin' it out. The line did move quickly, and after a quick scan of the menu it was finally time to place our order. Three lobster rolls, one clam roll, one order of chicken fingers and of course some cole slaw. 15 minutes waiting in line, 2 minutes at the window, 5 minutes of wait time then it was grub time. Champlin's has outdoor seating where you can see the Block Island Ferry coming in but they also have indoor seating. It's super casual, booth like seating and then a barn like room full of picnic tables. After my grandmother and I picked a table, we soon saw the boys bringing over the cafeteria style trays full of food. I had been waiting for this all day and whenever I saw the size, my eyes lit up like I just saw the gifts under the tree on Christmas morning! However, pictures were in order before diving in. The lobstah rolls are tail and knuckle meat. And they don't skimp either. For $15.99, they really hook it up and that's nicely priced too for the amount of meat you get. Light on the mayo, the way it should be done and served in a hot dog bun that has been buttered and toasted lightly on each side, it seemed like things were aligned for the perfect roll. However, the whole thing was just mediocre. I'm not sure if it's because I've been spoiled by Luke's Lobster or what but it just wasn't an out of the park win for me. Also, I believe a roll should at least be served with a pickle ... I know asking for Cape Cod chips would really be out of line, but serve something with it, just not the roll, it looked so lonely regardless of size. The rest of the lobstah roll crowd felt the same way. I can't comment too much on the service, but I certainly wouldn't be running back here anytime soon nor would I recommend anyone else heads there if they are looking for a true New England lobstah roll. And yes you've gotta say lobster with an ah, it's the icing on the cake for a true trip to RI. read more
