Meh...the food is okay. Nothing to really get excited about. It's because of this that I don't understand the lengthy wait. I have a feeling it's because there's not a whole lot of good restaurants on the island and this is one of the better places...unfortunately. The atmosphere is also very uncomfortable and cramped. The name is confusing. I went in expecting a typical coffee shop and was met with a diner. It is super cute as a diner. When you first come in, you are greeted with a friendly, "sit wherever you'd like". The food was pretty good. It was very warm in there (even in late October). Also, it is not a place to go if you want to take your time. Since I was eating alone, the staff seemed to try to hurry me out so others could have my table. Nice old-fashioned diner and decor but the quality and quantity of my meal was not worth the price. 1 dry biscuit came with the biscuit and gravy meal for $11.95. Looks like this a place the locals go to. It is a real old fashion coffee shop. They have a Omelet called Garbage that is great I am going there again tomorrow. It's a diner, what do you expect? The coffee is strong (not burnt...I'm looking at you, Starbucks). Service is fast. My food came out fast, though there were only 3 of us in the joint at 6am. The line was long (which to me can be a good sign of a very popular eatery), the customer service was very lacking (2 out of 3 waitresses need a lesson in friendly customer service), my food ordered was wrong and after receiving the correct order, the food was mediocre at best. Good classic diner feel. I'm from New Jersey, land of the diners, so this feels like home to me. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu! My favorites are the chicken and waffles or the biscuits and gravy, but the omelettes and pancakes are delicious as well. Clayton's can get busy though so you may have to wait sometimes, but be patient because it's a small space. The service is fast so they're pretty good at getting people in and out. read more

It is really sad that this place exists as one of the few diner type establishments in touristy Coronado. It has the potential to be amazing and yet it is not. Starting with my first visit,yes,I've been twice, where I found an insect leg in my iced tea and the blt consisted of broken hard bacon to my visit yesterday where clearly service is not a priority. That was a long sentence. Yesterday I ordered at the window outside. I ordered an iced green tea. Trying to give the local place my business over Starbucks which is literally across the street,FYI. First wasn't sure which side of the window to stand in front of or if they were even open because there was no one there for about five minutes. That's a long time BTW. I could've walked off with all of their counter stuff if I were that type of person. When the young lady finally did show up she was extremely unfriendly. Ordered the tea. TEN minutes later she says I'm waiting for it to cool so I can ice it. When she gave it to me it was practically clear and tasted like kind of cool water. Here's an idea: inform the client that it will take some time because you don't have a pitcher of tea ready to go when they order Or invest in Styrofoam cups and pour the hot tea directly over a cup packed with ice. I know that's not pc with the environment. But I would've ordered something different if I knew there was going to be a wait like that. What I thought would be a few minute jaunt to Claytons ended up being a 20 minute disappointing waste of time. Lesson learned. Starbucks is across the street like I said. read more

Super nice people that made some delicious food. We stopped by for a late afternoon lunch. I had a great omelette with really good coffee. The kids had waffles and a huge chicken sandwich. The staff kept our coffee and lemonades full and gave us some to go on our way. An old time feel that made for an enjoyable meal. read more

A fun restaurant in the heart of Coronado. Parking can be somewhat difficult, I suggest parking on the side streets and walking (enjoy the nice scenery!) to the place. It's pretty small inside and they pack you in pretty tight, but the food is really good and the prices are very reasonable too. They serve breakfast all day long and have an extensive menu too. Definitely a place to try on a weekend foodie trip. read more

Staying at the Hoel Del Coronado but enjoy walking to the nearby restaurants to eat. Found this local gem of a diner. Very popular, no AC but still pretty comfortable. Fun diner environment, most of the seating is at the large counter. The food is fresh and very good. We have eaten breakfast there twice. Large assortment of items, very good food. I highly recommend you walk the two blocks. Great food and very affordable. read more

This coffee shop is super adorable and it made me fall in love. The old school decor, the doughnuts in glass cases, the jukebox playing The Righteous Brothers... The service we had was fantastic and attentive. For breakfast we both ordered the special, which was a french toast sandwich. Breakfast in this place is exactly what a diner breakfast should be. Everything was fantastic. Breakfast burrito (add bacon and sour cream and it's like a little tube of heaven); spicy sausage breakfast sandwich (I wanted to marry it but that's still not legal in CA.); cinnamon roll (okay, too much icing for my taste but that's hardly a crime, and the cinnamon was great); and super coffee. Even the music on the little individual juke boxes was retro-diner perfect (Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash... love it). Now I just can't wait to get back to Coronado. read more

I went here Nov 9th around 8pm. I wanted to like this place but the female waitress's were as rude as it could get. After ordering my food my waitress disappeared. After it was done cooking I saw the cook put it up for the waitress to come get it. She was no where to be found.. The cook looked at me a few times... But what was I suppose to do.. It was so awkward. After 10 min of my food still sitting there.. One of the bus boys went over to the other waitress to let her know food was sitting there... She's like ok tell so and so that's her customer. Finally a few min later the girl whom wasn't my waitress delivered my food. The food it self was great. The mash potatoes tasted real and the turkey was great.. I would have loved this place but the crew ruined it. The whole time I kept getting rude looks and it felt like they were talking about you.. Plus the one younger girl looked miserable working there. I put the date and time of when I went there so hopefully they could correct this problem.. read more

We sat at the counter and our server was Chelsea. She was really friendly and efficient. The food took a little longer than we expected. I had the Huevos Rancheros, which were just ok. I felt like there was too much Ranchero sauce and it was really bland. The beans and browns were very good, though. My husband had the Turkey, Swiss, & Avocado, but they were out of avocado so they offered him guacamole. It just wasn't the same as real slices of avocado. We came here once about 10 years ago, so this was our second time. I'm pretty sure we'd go again, but since I was more in the mood for Mexican, we probably should have just grabbed a burrito from Clayton's Take Out around the corner. read more

Went here for New Year's days breakfast and it was just what the doctor ordered. Greasy, good breakfast faire in middle of the business district. I got a Spinach, feta, and tomato omelet, added Avocado. Split the French toast which held its own, buttery goodness and helped ward off those next day blahs. If you can, roll up to a seat rather than window-side at the Diner (otherwise the sun can get you), but the service was prompt, coffee was ample and we walked away satisfied. read more

Had a nice lunch here today on the way to the Hotel del to see Christmas tree, I had "garbage omelette" which had everything in it, tasty and not too greasy. Tuna Salad sandwich and pork chops with eggs were also good. Pork chops (2) were thin but not overcooked (most places can really screw up a thin pork chop) Prices were reasonable, service was friendly. Lots of prompt coffee refills kept us happy. read more

I was in a hurry to my work and i had to get a coffee at the window because I like the coffee at McDonald's. I went and I ordered 3 sugar packets with a side of California roll. They got it to me as fast as they could and I got to drink my milk with nice Kung foo chicken. After I did this action I went to SeaWorld and meet Tom Brady and it was all because of the Manager Grace at the window in Claytons. Thank you grace!!!! I am forever in your debt. Good breakfast, coffee was great compared to normal diners. Waitstaff very pleasant, part of the charm is the diner ambiance.

Despite lines out the door, this place remains poorly run, overpriced, slow AND the food is very mediocre. As a resident, I try to support local places, but my patience has run out. I guess because we have lots of one-time visitors, the management must assume they can dish out a poor product, take the money and move on to the next victim. That's a shame because once summer is over, there are lots of hungry residents left. Today's incident: ordered a BLTA (A being avocado) "panini". I waited for 25 minutes at a non-busy time well before the lunch rush. After finally getting it, I opened up the box to find two slices of burnt bread, some lettuce, a sad tomato slice...and no avocado. Seriously? This is a menu item that was almost $11 plus tip for the staff at the walk up window. Last time I tried breakfast, the eggs were cold, the biscuits almost inedible & I sat forever to first get waited on at counter & then left without a drink, a check in, and long dealt to get the check...just really poor customer service. read more
