Food was good but service was terrible. We went during Covid and their communication is very confusing. A big banner by their menu says to call in your order, no one is remotely close to the door to talk to. So we called. On the phone, after I place my order the worker says that it is better to order at the take-out menu (which is around the corner and we didn't know it was the same menu there...there are no prices or desciptions on the take-out menu). But she still took my order and gave me no instructions on what to do. So we waited outside....for 45 MINUTES! I went in once and she said my order wasn't ready and she would let me know when it was. 20 minutes later and after seeing her sitting around and orders sitting on the counter for a while, I went in again. Finally it was ready. She told me AGAIN that I should have gone to the take out window....geez. Then maybe they could communicate that better....in sitting there for 45 minutes we saw a sign to go to the take-out window but it was NOT by the menu or the entrance. There is no information on what to do when your order is ready, no number is called and they don't even go outside to let you know. I was frustrated on waiting outside for 45 minutes in the sun and she said she didn't see me (my whole family was right outside the window) and she said they don't normally go outside. So it seems that customers are NOT their first priority nor are they willing to do anything to appreciate those who are supporting their business. It was purely a transaction and as a customer I felt belittled, not heard, and very offended when I left. I shout it...USE THE TAKE-OUT WINDOW unless you absolutely have to order from the restaurant (or if you follow what their banner says), if you do you might get scolded and argued with by the workers. I didn't cancel my order with this rude worker because I thought it would be the same but big mistake, apparently the restaurant and take-out window are separate and now I know that, it is all very confusing for new customers. read more

Worst Cuban sandwich I've ever had, super bland and dry. Server snipped at me when I asked if they had ketchup/mustard, then I received a bag of ketchup packets (no mustard). There's a Burger Lounge across the street, spare yourself the long wait and mediocre food. read more

Simply classic! Clayton's is dollar for dollar the best in Coronado. Everyone loves the 50's style kitsch diner, the atmosphere the the attitude but Clayton's is the real deal without the attitude just good food. Wonderful service. The breakfast cuisine is solid, fabulous corned beef hash which you can't fake. Also great biscuits and gravy. In 30+ visits with various orders I have never been disappointed. They also have great pie and deserts and baked goods. I have ordered the sandwiches a few times and they are really good as well. THE COFFEE WALK-UP WINDOW: I cannot say enough, go here instead of Starbucks. It is cheaper, better, and faster (The Coronado Starbucks leave much to be desired). Everything tasted the same and the coffee was your generic, run-of-the-mill variety that most people wouldn't serve at their homes. We ate at Clayton's twice on our recent vacation in Coronado. First time, we had breakfast and it was great. Between us, we tried eggs, pancakes and oatmeal. Everyone liked what they ordered. The second time, we ate a late lunch and we all enjoyed burgers, fries, slaw, shakes and pie. The burgers were delish. Apple pie was especially good and tasted homemade. Servers were attentive and friendly both times. Prices are reasonable, which can be tough to find in Coronado. Would definitely recommend! read more

This place is so charming. We showed up for a late breakfast on a Sunday morning. Honestly was surprised how quickly we got a booth seat because this place was packed. We had a server who was busy, but nice about taking a while to get order going. My husband got the blended latte and I got a chai tea....Both drinks WAY better than expected coming out of a diner (not like coffee-pot coffee or something :) Anway the bagel breakfast sandwich was amazing and had bites of the breakfast burrito as well. The potatoes were not hash browns or home fries now quite sure what they were other than not good some were burnt, some were still hard. My eggs were over done and the corned beef hash really had no flavor. Only giving 2 stars because our waitress was ok and I liked the 1950's look of the place. We're rarely in Coronado since we live closer to La Jolla, but we were headed down that way for an event. My husband found Clayton's on Yelp and insisted we go. We got there around 9:30 am on a Saturday. I wasn't excited about a 25 minute wait because I was starving and we had our 5 month old with us. But a wait is usually a sure sign the food is good. It was pretty hot in there as others have mentioned and my son's car seat wouldn't fit in the booth b/c the tables don't move. No biggie though. I got the huevos rancheros and my husband got an omelet with a side of biscuits and gravy for us to share. My husband's toast was burnt so bad it was black on one side. Other than that the food was just mediocre and the coffee was ok. Next time we're in the area we'd go somewhere else. Not really worth another try. read more

A little overpriced considering 2 eggs with 1 Piece toast and bacon (a little soggy) was $9.95. But hey that's Coronado a little overpriced everywhere. Good pancakes and French toast. The service was good always re filling coffee which was reasonably priced. This place was short walk from where we were staying made us come back a second time In addition to the good food. The breakfast is medocre. Weekdays it can take loong for your order to be up. Saturdays it takes looong for your order to be up. The hashbrowns are a little better than terrible. They generally stay crowded because they are really the only full breakfast place. I'd really give it a 2.75 at most. I recommend the French bakery across the street; they don't do hash browns, just potato quarters, but their breakfast is much better quality and you won't have to pay $35 for everything (Coffee Shop charges a la carte). read more

My family and I stopped into Clayton''s around 9 pm for a quick snack and a cup of hot chocolate. I am writing this review to express my gratitude to Jackee (our server) for her outstanding service and on top of that her extremely pleasant attitude and willingness to go above and beyond to take care of us. I have been in the restaurant business for over 20 years and when I come into contact with a really special place I like to tell people about it. The food was wonderful and the service awesome! This coffee shop has character,great food and awesome service. I want to make sure Jackee knows that at the end of the day, when the restaurant was an hour from closing...she took care of 5 very grateful people. My wife liked the old fashioned look so we went in and sat at the counter. She ordered the burger and fries. No complaints. I chose the grilled chicken, spinach, tomato and feta cheese salad. Big complaints. The spinach was fine. The chicken was terrible. Strips, sort of grilled, both gummy and crispy at the same time. Didn't taste like chicken. Didn't taste at all. Tomatoes were diced and barely present. Feta was overpowering, way, way too much. A carelessly made salad. The wait staff was very inattentive. Loved the look of the diner, from the vintage booths, to the waitresses and waiters in their cute aprons and bow ties. I had a palm smoothie, which was delicious!
