The chefs whip up some good old fashioned comfort food. I was very pleased with the quality of the food. I had the 1/3 lb. Cheeseburger with chili cheese fries. The hostess, Jack I think his name was, he was very friendly. He greeted me at the door and seated me at the counter. I was very disappointed with my waitress, Alishia. (which is why my review is so low). The only service she provided was taking my order. I had to waive her down to refills on my ice t. I had to ask her for the check and also for a to-go box. I really felt like not leaving a TIP at all, but I wanted some of the TIP to go to the other staff that was providing good service. Alishia, just because your pretty doesn't mean you have to treat your customers like garbage. The cute brunette girl with green eyes is really nice though. I wish she was my waitress instead. I went here with a friend for breakfast and I have to say it was pretty good! I had the french toast with eggs and hashbrowns. I wasn't to keen on the hasbrowns but everything else was perfect! Basically the food here is average and over priced. I must say though the desserts are SUPERB and well worth the price. Price...one Dr Pepper, one Coffee, one slice of Pie and one Chocolate Shake...20.00. The best I have in a long time though. Biscuit and gravy came lukewarm. There was a piece of hair on it as well. The sirloin steak sandwich was much better. Even the fries that came with the sandwich were hotter than the gravy. Oh, but the Apple Pie. There are very few places that make me feel at home and this is definitely one of them. Fantastic breakfast! We were driving around looking for a place and this one had a line so we thought it must be good! Our kids each got Mickey pancakes with bacon and devoured them. When traveling I am always on the lookout for places frequented by the locals. Clayton's seemed like one of those places. There were a few regulars who came in while I was there....a dad and his two daughters, all excited to order the spaghetti special. I was intrigued but had already ordered breakfast. The biscuits and gravy were good but certainly nothing to write home about. Was too full to have dessert but they had some good looking options. Cool atmosphere complete with a jukebox...unfortunately it was malfunctioning the day I was there. :( read more

I was going to eat inside, but there was no place to sit. So I chose the sidewalk walk up window. After just under 10 minutes a waitress finally passed by and said "I'll be right with you" which apparently means 'you've been standing there for 10 minutes, how about 10 minutes more?' Giving the benefit of the doubt, it was busy, I continued to wait, my expectations growing about the quality of the food. I mean if it's this busy, the food must be great right? Trying to keep it simple I ordered a Chorizo Burrito, comes filled with chorizo, eggs, cheese and something that may have been mashed potatoes (God, I hope that's what it was). Good sized portion, still hot, smelled yummy. Halfway through the burrito I actually ran into some chorizo! What a pleasant surprise! Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't chorizo supposed to be a little spicy? Just a little? Let's just say the chorizo looked good but was about as spicy as the mashed potato-like substance. At $10 (with an OJ) I really thought it was overpriced for what I got. But it is in Coronado so apparently that's considered a $ rating. Next time I'm in the mood for a chorizo burrito I'll head down the strand to Jalisco's. I remember when this was the Day & Night Cafe. Talk about a buzz kill after the beach. We walked over here to enjoy coffee and smoothies before dinner. We waited over thirty minutes with four small children for one iced coffee, a latte, and two smoothies. What's worse was the smoothie we purchased didn't have peanut butter listed as an ingredient and one of our children has a bad peanut allergy. The girls inside were very nice but the whole operation as a whole is not running smoothly. Do yourself a favor and avoid baking in the hot sun. read more

I love this place! Reminds me of my diners back in Manhattan. Prices are great, service is super fast (when it's not too busy, but hey) and the food is actually good. I hear the owner makes the pies and cakes. If you're looking for organic, gluten-free, new age food, this ain't it. I would not go to Clayton's again based on choice. I read all the ratings and so I went even though someone told me it wasn't good because of everyone's comments on here. I went and had the biscuits and gravy with eggs and one whole wheat pancake. The biscuits were tough and the gravy didn't have sausage in it that I could tell...the eggs were good but how can you screw over medium eggs. The pancake was horrible really doughy as if not cooked enough and texture was awful. I will not be going back to this place next year on my visit. read more

This place is just BAD! No real locals eat there, only the people that come into town to visit. First thing, I am a local to the island and I have been to this place for years. Every time I go there lately, I wish I didn't, because the food and service is so bad. You don't leave the place thinking, "wow, that was great food, can't wait to go back". Instead you are thinking, " what was I thinking going back and eating there, that was so disappointing". This leads me up to today's visit, as I sit here typing this in the fetal position from the bad food pain. Today we were hungry and wanted something close because my wife is pregnant and I have medical issues. We figured we could try Claytons again, (remember we have been there multiple times because we live on a small island and it is close to us). 1. We knew it wasn't going to be a good visit when the staff was talking to one another and leaving dirty dishes on the tables where people wanted to sit. It was not busy (on a Saturday afternoon) and there was no excuse for that much disorganization, especially with the number of staff on hand. We finally sat down at a dirty table and around 5 to 10 minutes later an unfriendly guy cleaned the table ignoring our hellos and thank you, not a big deal, but really! 2. I ordered a burger and when I advised the waitress that I could not have seeds on the bun, she asked the head chef if they had any bread without seeds. He said, no, just plain white bread. When I asked if I could have two bottoms they advised me he didn't want to split up two buns into two, losing money with two bun tops. In a town with over 50% of its population over 60, you would think they would have some kind of bread with no seeds; That would accommodate the many seniors and individuals with medical disabilities that can't have such luxuries. Also, you would think if someone is purchasing a burger worth $10.00 that same individual could afford 20 or so cents to purchase the cost of an additional bun, instead of, no we can't do it. The waitress did try to accommodate our needs, but made it clear she can only do that which the head chef allows. It would have been nice to have been asked how our meal was and what if we were not satisfied some kind of remedy or make good for the situation. 3. I ended up ordering the steak sandwich, the bun had no seeds (interestingly not white bread though like I was told was my only option). They could of used this as a burger bun as well. The steak sandwich was the worst thing I have ever tasted. As you can see from the photo I couldn't eat 80% of it. I couldn't tell if the cook was messing with me because of frustration regarding the bread questions. I won't go into all the problems with this sandwich. 4. The gravy, If you can't make gravy then you shouldn't be in a kitchen. Wow, and they can't even make gravy. The gravy was no more than brown water, it had the consistency of water, no real taste and also had unstirred clumps. It was suppose to be sausage gravy and not a sausage in sight. Additionally, it leads me to assume it was a mix that too much liquid (likely water) was added. 5. Dirty cups and chipped cups. One must drink beverages with a straw because you won't want to risk cutting your lips and some cups smell like dog. 6. The special of the day , written on the chalk board on the wall was different then what they told us, they also over charged us on the advertised special price. 7. They made me waste part of my day eating poor, unsatisfying food and writing this review. I hate having to leave reviews, this is my second review ever. It is a waste of my time but they wasted my money and I don't want them to waste yours. I will never eat there again! EVER! Eat at Claytons every time we come to Coronado. My choice is not the 50's food, but the Machaca Plate. The cooks understand Mexican cooking, and I got my meal about 5 minutes after I ordered. We have eaten the traditional 50's food, and it compares well to our Peggy Sue restaurant on Highway 66 near Barstow, CA. read more
