Had the "Dirty Burger" today on my first visit to Crack, along with a real draft root beer. Burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and topped off with bacon jam. I thinking the bacon jam inspired the name "Crack" because that on a burger could be classified as an addiction. Had a side of chicken and white bean chili which only manners kept me from licking the cup, and a sample of their fine rice-a-roni salad. The food is made to order - the chef is passionate about the food. I tried the corn salad - appropriately portioned and different from the conventional idea of having fries. The corn salad is a combination of cilantro, bell peppers, dried cranberry, and red onion in champagne dressing. There's a light sweetness from the cranberries and dressing, which balanced the crunchiness and natural sugars from the veggies. I am always in search for who makes the best Smashburger, and although the burger was yummy, I was more compelled to try it because of the bacon jam, which was very tasty however, for me, it was the chicken chili that was the star of the show. The only disappointing thing about the chilli is that it wasn't enough. Nevertheless, going back to the burger, my comparison is always the Smashburger from Win-Dow in Long Beach, if you know you know. So if you are looking for a slightly bigger and thicker Smashburger than this is your place, although they don't add pickles to it, I believe it could've helped to add more salt and acid to the burger. However they have a few different burger options. A lady sitting next to me, said the Ortega burger is her favorite. Unlike other places I have grown accustomed to a slightly thinner, Smashburger, but this one was thick and you definitely don't need a double double this will do the job, I couldn't even finish my burger because how big it was. I also like the touch of the grill print of the letter C on the brioche bun, which was very tasty, the bacon jam was definitely yummy. And the view was absolutely amazing. It felt like I was in another place, the sun was beginning to set, and the breeze was coming in, the trees were whistling, and it definitely made it the optimal environment to forget about my work week. The owner and staff were absolutely great, very welcoming and charming. This is definitely a place where you can invite a group of friends to hang out on the patio have burgers and beers. I can't believe I worked at the hospital down the block for a whole year and didn't know about this place until recently. My husband was starving after his appointment at the VA hospital and decided to eat here which was right around the corner. The place is on a golf course so it wasn't very hard to find. The coleslaw was really good, but the apple baked beans was something out of this world! What a find! In this current trend of paper thin smash burgers this burger goes against the flat dry crunchy trend and keeps it real...real juicy! Located at the edge of bixby golf course I was a bit confused about where it was. I walked towards the green shack hoping that no can get some direction but the crack was inside. Ordered the Ortega with a side of chili and coleslaw. I walked straight to the back patio and enjoyed the sunny day. A few fellas were out there and I grew envious of the frosted tall glasses of beer delivered to them as sipped on my water. Fortunately the burger and sides arrived and my beer envy disappeared as I gazed upon the glorious Ortega burger. The first bite hit the spot. There was a hint sweetness from the jam, the well seasoned outer crust offered a nice finish to get perfect medium rare center , the texture of the burger was a nice contrast to the melted cheese, and to round it all off the hatch chili added the perfect depth. I did wish I had a cold beer to wash it down with, but that's for next time The sides were excellent turkey chili was amazing and the lightness of the coleslaw was like a reset button for every bite to be enjoyed. I was caught off guard by the sides. They complimented the burger perfectly. I look forward to coming back here soon! Unfortunately I was charged a 23% service fee for using my credit card yesterday, which is totally illegal (3-4%) is standard & anything over that in California is illegal. There's neither a sign that I could see posted, nor even a heads up before the owner put my card in his so called "expensive" machine. He then told me to push one of the tip buttons & then Go (very loudly & in front of other customers) Of course my response was "No button" & I was very happy to Go. The bill was $26 if I paid cash, but when I decided to use my credit card, it became $32 (for a burger, a corn on the cob & a canned drink) which is a bit steep on its own, let alone being charged the $6 fee for the use of a credit card. I later brought this whole experience up to the owner via a private forum, & his responses were defensive, rude & crude ( no real surprise) Had he handled it professionally/correctly by simply apologizing & offering to return the exorbitant fee he charged me, I would have probably responded to this whole situation a bit differently. Besides sharing my experience here with the public, I will be taking further steps to make sure the necessary people know about this unacceptable business practice. *New addition to my first post as I just saw the angry obnoxious rant from the owner. Yelp reviews once again didn't disappoint! We had some time last Sunday after getting off the cruise ship and catching our flight, so I hoped onto Yelp to look for a good place to grab lunch. Up came this recommendation for a place called "Crack" - now who couldn't stop and read the reviews with a name like that? All these 5 star reviews on the food and the customer service, made it a must try! As mentioned, we had been on a cruise for 2 weeks and the famous smash burgers there were severely lacking - so the guys were really craving a great smash. Nestled in the middle of a golf course, the restaurant is in a cute building with ample free parking. Upon entering, we see a sign that states that they don't do to go orders due to being able to ensure their quality. Totally respect that. The owner was sitting inside and described their burgers to us and explained some specials not on the menu (donut dirty) and his creamed corn. We settled on a donut dirty, a couple regular dirtys, and the protein tacos with shrimp for mains. Potato salad, rice-a-roni salad, and white bean chili (had forgotten about the creamed corn). Grabbed our drinks and went and sat down outside next to a Blackstone. A few minutes later the cook comes out with our meat and cooks them right there! They smelt so great. Our sides get brought out and we begin to eat. O...M...G... the potato salad HAS to be the best potato salad that any of us had ever had. I mean - I would easily have paid $50 for that recipe (I'm currently searching for one that I think is similar). Made with red potatoes, the flavor is incredible! So much that we had to go order extra sides of it. The Rice-a-roni salad (cold) is made with curry and was a disappointment. I didn't feel it had any true flavor to it. I was hoping for some sweetness to counter the curry flavor but it was all just bland. My friend tried it and she agreed. After about 4 bites, we tossed it, especially when we had this amazing potato salad to eat! The white bean chili was tasty and the cup size was perfect. It had great flavor and hit the spot. No one else had some as they aren't legume fans but I finished it. As we're waiting for our burgers, the owner brings us the creamed corn to sample. Oh man! That was a total hit for the table so we went and ordered two more sides of that too! It wasn't super rich like a Rudy's creamed corn it was thinner in the liquid/sauce but once again, the flavors! Had some red and green peppers in it. If it's a special - make sure you get it! We haven't even gotten to the burgers yet! Our burgers came and they were just as good as the sides were - actually better! The burgers come with this bacon jam on it. Oy vey!! Hubs stated that the combination of the bacon jam and chipotle mayo with the Krispy Kreme donut took it up a bazillion notches! He inhaled the thing. My regular dirty was so good and rich (and filling) that I was only able to eat half of it - and then passed the other half to the hubs. Everyone was making all kinds of joyous noises eating our food. Now the big surprise of the show was the protein tacos. They came out and asked if she wanted sour cream and/or avocado on them. The options for protein that day were shrimp or ahi tuna and she opted for the shrimp. These tacos had to the very best tacos we've ever tried before! The hype is real! These burgers are amazing and definitely worth trying and crossing off your bucket list. However, the revolving sides menu is weird and can be frustrating. The place is basic on the interior and lowkey a hole in the wall which is surprising for a golf course eatery but that doesn't take away from the flavor. The burger is definitely crack. My friends and I all agreed that it was a great burger. However we are not sure we will be back because of the hours, the okay amount of parking in the lot, the limited and revolving menu and the lackluster interior.
