Without a doubt, this is my favorite chicken restaurant in all of SoCal. Yes, they do have fish and shrimp as well, but fried chicken is where it's at as far as comfort food goes, and there is no better place for chicken than Dinah's. I live about an hour and a half away, so I don't get here as often as I would like, but if I'm within 30 minutes of Dinah's for any reason, I'm going to Dinah's for chicken. Nothing fancy here. Used my trusty Yelp app to find this place before my second job began and I don't get a break for only working two hours. It's located in a strip mall, no surprise there. In the parking lot there is a pole withe a huge looking bucket which seems vaguely similar to a National food chain. You walk in and it little dim, but I like the big windows at the front. They have a big board on the wall for take out orders, which I think most people do here, although I could see it as an after church lunch spot. The prices were really reasonable. I ordered a dinner meal and an extra side, which I probably should haven't. Then again one knows they shouldn't order when you are REALLY hungry. There was only one other person sitting down when I got there but it was early 4pm, so service was fast. The chicken was really good. Crispy and juicy without being greasy. The mac n cheese was good. It was the little small cut squarish circles instead of the standard elbows. Reminded me of the Mexican macaroni. Corn on the cob I was a little disappointed with. Have been going to Dinah's Chicken for many years and every time I go I say to myself this is the best chicken on the planet. I LOVE Dinah's and also the many side dishes AND delicious pies that are offered. I went there just yesterday and ordered the three-piece chicken plate, usually you will not get a choice of the parts and I love thighs but asked the lady behind the counter for three thighs and she said yes, they were huge and looked like turkey thighs, they have outside patio dining and the tables are safely socially distanced. if Dinah's had more locations I'm sure they would be popular everywhere. 2.5 is what I would give this place if I could. We had this place for catered lunch twice at my job. The chicken: if you didn't get a burnt piece...it was just okay, not great. The chicken doesn't really have any flavor to it. What I did like was the fact that it is very tender and not greasy. I'd still rather hit up Popeyes Chicken. Coleslaw: Nothing above average, just has pineapple chunks in it. Mac n cheese: Average mac n cheese. My homemade mac n cheese is better. Rolls: Dry and they don't even give packs of butter with their catering service. Would I go on my own? Nope. Will I be happy when work mentions we are getting it catered. I have this place on my iPhone and call it on the road to see if they have Chicken Gizzards available when I am nearby. This is only one of 2 places I know of in LA that has gizzards on the menu (the other is the original Pioneer Chicken) and these are burning hot goodness! They are cooked so soft, sometimes a little over salty on the crust but pipping hot goodness on the inside! It's always with the goddamn fucking chicken!" all I could do was stare at the instantly recognizable bucket and think, "How could anyone ever get sick of Dinah's?" The fried coating is so highly seasoned and crispy. The meat is so juicy and tender. Alan Arkin should consider himself lucky. Dinah's Fried Chicken has been a Glendale institution since 1967. Los Angeles is also home to Dinah's Family Restaurant in Culver City, which is more of a coffeeshop. There is quite a bit of speculation on the internet about the two Dinah's. Nobody is very clear on the real story. You only need to look as far as the pictures on the walls to see the authentic history of the Glendale Dinah's. It has clearly been going strong for two generations. The restaurant is now run by Dave Pearson, the original owner's son, and his wife Linda. So I decided to go straight to the source and speak to one of the current owners. Let me tell you, this was no easy feat because they certainly do get up early in the morning to get that restaurant humming. So here we solve the great mystery of Dinah's. Straight from Linda Pearson. 40 years ago, a group of golfing buddies came up with the idea for Dinah's. They shared plans, recipes and logos, but the restaurants were each independently owned and operated. One family decided to build their Dinah's as a coffeeshop (The Culver City coffeeshop is now run by the original golfing buddy's step-grandson). The other families decided to open chicken stands, six in all. As time has worn on, one Dinah's after another has closed its doors. The last of the other Dinah's called it quits in Burbank ten years ago, leaving only the Culver City coffee shop and and the Glendale chicken stand. Although nothing has been said outright, I get the impression that the two Dinah's are not exactly on visiting terms. There are no big naugahyde booths and no giant apple pancakes at the Glendale Dinah's. The little cafe is furnished sparsely with comfortable wooden chairs, and every table has a jar of their homemade apple butter. The service is super-friendly, and if you are dining alone you will quickly make friends with the staff and other diners. It is a classic neighborhood joint. Although chicken is the big seller, Dinah's fried livers are pretty famous. I'm not a big fan of chicken livers, so I thought I'd try the deep fried gizzards on my last visit. Dinah's gizzards were a revelation. They were crispy and crunchy on the outside, yet they melted in your mouth. The side dishes are equally famous, and people seem to either love them passionately or find them a little too unusual. I love the pineapple cole slaw, but there are people who can't deal with the sweetness. The macaroni salad has a little touch of powdered mustard and fresh garlic. If you eat enough of it you can feel the slow burn of garlic creeping up on you. I will admit, you do have to eat the macaroni salad right out of the big tub with a fork to achieve that burn. Not that it's something I have ever done, mind you. Their newest offering, Mac and cheese, also kicks ass. The only dish I can't really recommend is the fish and chips. The chips themselves are fantastic. Some of the best french fries around. But the fish is in a breadcrumb coating instead of Dinah's fantastic batter. So although they are servicable, they are missing the zing and Dinah's signature crackle. There are just so many other great options on the menu. Besides the crave-worthy gizzards, juicy chicken, and fun side dishes, the rolls are fresh store-bought, and the delicious little pies come from Martinello's bakery. read more

Highly recommend this place if you're looking for great tasting/comfort home style food. The fried chicken is MUST, same goes with the mac n cheese. We had pineapple coleslaw which is perfect! They make all their salad from scratch. The corn on the cob was ok. I'm not big on sweet but the corn could if used it. For me personally, it is better than most chain fried chickens because it is lighter. It doesn't have that heavy greasy feeling to it; despite being clearly crispy and cooked with oil. The chicken is great. As far as sides, we sampled the mac'n'cheese and fruit-mellow salad (figured mashed potatoes are mashed potatoes no matter who makes them, right?). The mac'n'cheese was satisfactory; nothing special but definitely tasty. The fruit-mellow salad was a great ambrosia, although a little overly sweet to be a dinner side; it's basically fruit cocktail with marshmallow cream, mini-marshmallows, and a lil bit of coconut. I have been a Dinah's customer my entire life. I remember coming her as a kid and the place has not changed on bit. I am now a fairly frequent customer and probably 1/2 way to a heart attack because of it! Food- It's greasy, terrible for you and delicious! They make great fried chicken, but more often than not, I order the fried shrimp. I always get a side of mashed potatoes with gravy and a side of the pineapple coleslaw. This is the only coleslaw I have ever eaten and liked. It's so good. The meals are also served with a yeast role. I don't frequently order it, but the fruit mellow is also good. Sometimes I get a peach cobbler and Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. Nothing here is healthy, but it is all yummy! Service- Hit and miss, but mostly nice and competent. The owner is often around and she is nice. If anything, the staff usually looks bored when it's slow. They are more real people than they are bending over backwards to give great service. Ambiance- Country decor with rickety wooden tables and cutesy sayings on the wall. The dining room is small. I have eaten in, but they do mostly a take out trade. I usually also do take out. It can get very busy during peak meal times. This place isn't remotely fancy, but it doesn't need to be. The food is delicious and that's all that matters. Tip- It's located in a very busy mini mall. Sometimes the lot is full and you have to park on the street. It also borders an industrial area/train tracks. I don't feel unsafe or anything, but it's not in the best of areas. read more

It was almost one year ago today when I tried Dinah's chicken for the 1st time. My order that time was a little burned And the pie wasn't very fresh at all, But I said to myself maybe it's a fluke people speak highly of it. Upon my 2nd visit I came to find out that burning chicken is what they do best. I believe this happens when you let chicken sit for a while and it gets cold then to reheat it you drop it back in the fryer which darkens the original color. as for the pie... I ordered a Boston cream. It was stale very old should have been taken down a while ago. Don't get me started on the biscuit or should I say bread in biscuit clothing. The biscuit tasted exactly like regular bread which was very disappointing I paid a dollar extra for it. When it comes to service although I had no problem Myself, I overheard them bad mouthing several different customers that had come to pick up orders. I thought that was very unprofessional. I live fairly close to Dinah's so I've had it many times.. Chicken is bland, not spicy whatsoever and its a little burnt tasting but I like it. The cole slaw is the second best cole slaw I've had, the best is of course the pantry in Downtown. I highly recommend the pineapple cole slaw at Dinah's, very good! The gravy they provide with the mashed potatoes is horrible, its tasteless and I'm shocked anyone likes it. Do they? Everyone I know avoids it at all cost. I want to enjoy Dinah's. I really want to love this chicken and give it a good rating, but I just can't. It's just far too salty and far too overcooked everytime I go there. I've tried 4 times at different locations to give this place a chance, and each time it disappoints. The mashed potatoes and gravy is flavorless, the pineapple coleslaw is decent with that interesting kick. But the Chicken should be great and it's just not. There are so many other places in LA to get good fried chicken that Dinah's at this point now seems like a relic of the past, back when the only competition was KFC. Times change, and this chain needs to do something to update. Even the decor in this place was pretty chintzy. Lots of painted chickens everywhere, some cookbooks on a shelf; It's apparently very kid friendly as I almost tripped on a wooden horse coming in. Didn't want a wing or thigh so I got the leg & breast (w/ribs attached) and mash potatoes & yeast roll. What no Mac & cheese? Guess I read wrong because no Mac & cheese here. Well chicken was tasty but not extra special. Mash potato serving was way too small, smaller than a scoop of ice cream. Tastier than KFC. Roll? Food was good but I am definitely glad we had a groupon deal. Food is also cheaper for to-go orders, but since it was pouring rain out, we didn't want to run back to the car just yet, so we figured we might as well dine in. Service wasn't as bad as I was fearing as I read the reviews while we waited for our food, which yes, did come out very quickly. Refills were promptly served but we didn't really get a drop by to 'see how things were' till closer to the end of our meal. Corn was sweet and great - a big corn on the cob. Rolls were alright, apple butter was nice way to dress it up, but with it being just slightly passed fart-warm (not oven-toasty), I didn't really care to eat it. Mac n cheese was super cheesy, a yay for me, a nay for him. Mashed potatoes were large in portion, could have used just a little bit more gravy (we also used it for the chicken) but still good. To use up our $20 he got the 5pc dinner and I got the 3pc shrimp lunch. Thank goodness we used the groupon because I would have never paid $9 for three tiny friend shrimp and have been happy or at least been the least bit satisfied.
