I've been a fan of Dinah's for more than 8 years. I'm a creature of habit or a creature with a serious chicken habit. I always order the three piece chicken dinner with two sides. First, let's talk about the bird. Leg, thigh, and breast... oh my!!! And yes I am talking about the chicken. The chicken is golden, crispy, juicy, hot, and tasty. The sides are plentiful. Again, I always get the pineapple coleslaw. It is a balance of sweet and tangy that revives your taste buds (for you snobs, it cleanses the palate before your next bite of chicken). Side two is usually a toss up between the macaroni salad or the macaroni and cheese, or the corn on the cob. The mash potatoes are solid with brown gravy. And then, bonus time. This masterpiece comes with a bun. Normally I'm not into buns or bread, but they do have their place. Here, the fluffy white buns are the perfect delivery device for the apple butter. I like to tear the bun into tiny pieces and load each one with mounds of apple butter. If you are still hungry for more, I also recommend the chicken livers or gizzards. Again, I am familiar with southern food. I love chicken livers, hot or cold. Dinah's are good either way. If you are not down with the organ meat, then well more for me. It seemed more like it was baked till crispy vs. fried so for that this place gets mediocre reviews from me for the fried chicken. The pineapple cole slaw was a nice compliment but it's no KFC cole slaw (read: addictingly delicious). I liked that the Mac & cheese used the small, thick macaroni pasta but it was kinda Kraft Mac & cheese status- just decent overall. There's also a dinner roll that's supposed to come with apple butter but it was just regular butter & the roll was whatever. I think this place gets a lukewarm review cuz that's how I felt about the food- good enough to eat once but not good enough to come back. The dining area is small & cozy & the prices are pretty low. I've been craving some authentic southern fried chicken after a few friends posted pictures from Gus's recently. However that location is a bit far from where I live and I didn't want to drive all the way there, face a long wait with 3 small kids, just to have a meal and come back home. Don't get me wrong. I learned not to judge any book by its cover. The place is small with very small tables. They have a different menu for take outs and dine ins. The chicken and corn on the cob were so goood! The banana pie was also pretty good! The french fries and mac 'n cheese were okay, nothing too special abouth them. The chicken here puts me in a bad mood. Dark, dark skin. Fried in oil that is rarely changed, which only burns. This also explains the more-often-than-not pink meat wiggling within. The dinner roll is in no way freshly baked -- it's not even warm. It comes to your table cold and tough! I didn't get the opportunity to try the mac & cheese, but I saw it as the neighboring table chowed down a bowl. It looked pretty great, so if ever I return, I will be sure to check it out. Of course, like most things, the food here is edible and probably a lot better than your average KFC. But it does make me wonder whether or not the cast of "Little Miss Sunshine" really did eat this chicken. This place has a lot of mixed reviews, and I can tell why. I ordered a 1/2 pint of chicken gizzards to go. It was a VERY generous amount, but the pieces of gizzard were small. They were really soft, but I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. Personally, I like them crunchy and chewy (which is why some hate gizzards). The breading wasn't very crispy and lacked flavor, but was really salty. When I got home, I dunked them in ketchup, which I usually don't do. The restaurant itself was quaint. I don't understand why the dine in prices are different than take out. The pies behind the counter looked really good, but I decide to be good and not take a slice to go. Not Soul Food... No, that wouldn't be fair to Soul Food restaurants and besides, that is not what Dinah's is. This is FRIED CHICKEN, parlor style. Here, the amazing signage and decor boldly laughs at all the hipster establishments that have come and gone across the river in Los Feliz. Fonts from some creative's weekend bender in the 60's I imagine- Cooky and fun and lends so much to the over all vibe at eating at Dinah's. Dinah's has been a mainstay for picnics and comfort food since they started taking records for the Comfort Food Index. Get a mixed bucket, go to the park. Order sides of slaw (pineapple and has a pleasant crunch) corn on the cob, rolls and if you like to eat your dessert with dinner- the ambrosia. Skip the gravy, and the mac and cheese- they are too bland to be worthy of any more comment. Also, the pies are pretty solid as well. NOTE: The bathrooms are spotless. The bread roll can be a little more buttery because it was a little dry so you'll need to add the clover honey which is really good honey. Mash potatoes are really good and buttery.
