Although food was very tasty. A fly went on one of our entrees, and we had only eaten 1/3 of it. When we complained about it, in a nice way. They didn't offer to take it off our tab, nor a discount - until we mentioned if they could possibly take at least half of the cost off. Instead, they made us pay the bigger portion of it and only took a few dollars off of it. And we could see workers talking about us and looking at our table as if we had made it up, when the fly was in full view flying around the restaurant. Prior to the fly landing on our food, they saw us trying to protect our food from it by fanning it away when we noticed it coming around our food. When the worker told us what our portion would be, another worker with a loud voice and a stern look asked if we were ready for our take out boxes. We were taken aback and asked if she was mad at us. She then was taken aback and smiled and said no, she wasn't. I'm really sad about this last encounter since it was one of our favorite places to eat Korean black noodles and sweet and sour pork. Don't think we'll be eating there for a while, maybe take out from now on. read more

Came here to try the jjajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) after craving it for so long. Parking can be a little difficult, as it's in a shared lot with a few other restaurants, with a pay box. If you're not short on time, I suggest parking in Ala Moana and walking. We all ordered the regular jjajangmyeon ($9.50), and the portion was fairly big, as I wasn't able to finish my serving. The sauce didn't have as much flavor as I wanted, which I'm a little disappointed about, but as I've only ever eaten this dish in Korea, I guess it's not fair to compare it to just that. read more

We just went here for lunch and the lady that works there was so incredibly kind and sweet. She was very patient as we ordered for my family of 5. We ordered jja Jang myun, tang soo yuk (they can make it with pork, beef, or chicken, which is important to me since I don't eat pork but loved this dish since I was a child), jjang bbong, and bok geun jjang bbong. All the food was pretty good, but the ttang soo yuk was the best I've tasted on this island. So so good! They also have housemade dhang moo jee (dhak gwang). A fusion of Chinese & Korean food randomly located below the popular Airpark Karaoke Room. The restaurant itself is nice and clean, and the staff here are kind and welcoming. My boyfriend and I got 3 different dishes with the recommendations of the waitress. We liked 2 of the ones she suggested. The black bean noodle was just okay. The only good thing there is the jajangmyuen. The jampong used to be good but now is really lacking in flavor...basically just a watery, spicy broth. We went there today and also ordered the garlic chicken...what a disappointment...nothing like garlic chicken anywhere. It's basically boiled, tough chicken with a thick gravy- like sauce...no garlic taste at all. And to top it off, they forgot to bring over 2 of the dishes. This restaurant was more korean than Chinese, and while the soup was amazing, the mushroom beef was 75 % bamboo and mushrooms and 25% meat. The meat was hard to chew and cut. If you come here , I'd recommend the sizzling rice soup. read more

A nice place to get a bowl of jajamyeon (forgive my butchering of the spelling). I have never tried jajamyeon from china or korea so i cannot speak too much on the authenticity of its taste but it was very delicious and reasonably priced. They serve hot tea and banchan (kim chee side dish and pickled radish)f or the table. 3.5 stars for food taste and quality and round up to 4 stars for their good, quick, and friendly service. The black bean noodles (jjajangmyon) were good and so were the spicy seafood noodles (jjambbong). The best item of the night was the sweet and sour (mostly sweet) pork (Tangsuyook). This seemed like the traditional Korean style Chinese dish despite its appearance. It was pleasantly surprising and good. The pickled radish, onions, and kimchi cabbage comes out as a free side dish with each order for the whole table. Sides were decent but didn't eat the onions because of the recent news about salmonella outbreak in the country. The kimchi is, pretty sad to say, "decent" (for in the US) but it's definitely not the kimchi you would know if you've been to Korea or had a home cooked Korean meal. Would definitely recommend to anyone craving Korean style Chinese food though. read more

Filthy. Cook smoking outside the back door. Look inside the kitchen for a shock. Cleanliness is not a priority for them. There was a large dead cockroach under the table. I couldn't eat. We wasted over $100. I should have known better. My intuition was telling me to get out the moment I stepped though the door. Would love a refund. So good! The waiters are so attentive and very friendly. Whenever we need something they would be on it. The food was delicious and I always come here for the black bean noodle. It's the best I've ever had in Hawaii and I would recommend to all of my friends. The only downside is they close on Wednesdays. Love this place, 10/10 would recommend again. read more

Dowon is a small hybrid Chinese-Korean restaurant hiding behind the Teapresso off of Piikoi. Just turn off onto Kona and then go behind the Teapresso for their private lot. Parking in the lot is cheap at a buck per hour. There is someone watching the lot to see if your spot is paid up - and to make sure that no one breaks in your window while you dine or go to the yoga studio upstairs. That lot is small and may fill up - in which case parking down the block at Ala Moana is only a short walk away. Dowon continues to be small inside, with only a dozen tables - but the staff have big hearts and will gladly greet you and show your party immediately to a seat if they are able. Your dinner may open with a complimentary hot green tea and the usual pickled Korean goodies to much on while you wait for your entrees. It was a warm delight to drink on a rainy night, and the daikon was deliciously crunchy. Their kimchee was not terribly spicy - a trend that continued with the rest of our meal. My companion and I had come to try their jjajangmyeon and chili shrimp. She was nostalgic for the flavors of home, and I just really had a hankering for spicy crunchy shrimp. We added some eggplant-mushroom to that so that we could claim to be healthy by eating our vegetables. After our order was placed, we could hear a flurry of activity from the kitchen, and they brought one plate out after another in quick succession. All three dishes were serviceable. The batter on the shrimp was still fresh and crispy, but the chili was not fire in our mouths. The bean sauce on the jjajangmyeon was rich, but not notably flavorful. The eggplant was well-prepared, but not overwhelming. Good, but not great. It filled us up. A reasonable expectation for downtown on a rainy night. For the portion size, prices are a little on the steep side (they have gone up marginally higher from the photos we saw here on Yelp), but we have leftovers to share for at least one more meal - so your mileage may vary on that point. We would eat here again - possibly for lunch on our way to run errands at Ala Moana. read more

Fav place for gan jajjangmyeon to date. This place is pretty basic, no frills with the entrance not on Piikoi but rather thru the parking lot side. Be sure to ask for iced tea or iced water. It can get warm while eating! My friends like the regular jajjangmyeon and the jjamppong too. Although the latter is spicy but delicious! And lots of seafood. How did I not come across this restaurant on Yelp before?! One evening contemplating where to eat for dinner Dowon magically showed up and I immediately remembered how I haven't had Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) in what felt like a long time (December 2015 is far too long haha). I quickly got dressed and made my way over. I felt welcomed as I entered and already knew what I was ordering but decided to pair orange chicken along with my Jajangmyeon. They brought out Kimchee, onion with hoisin sauce, and danmuji (pickled daikon) to snack on and eat between bites of my meal. The orange chicken wasn't your Westernized version instead cuts of chicken stir fried with orange peels, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, mushrooms, carrots, onions and many other veggies. Now on to the Jajangmyeon! The first time I ever had was at a restaurant off of King St. I remember it being good but having had it for the first time I didn't have a basis to go off of other than what I see on KDrama's and Variety Shows (Running Man). The second time was while vacationing in Korea. We stopped by the restaurant on the lobby floor of our AirBnB building and picked some up. It was delicious! Back to Dowon, I truly enjoyed their Jajangmyeon and I think I've found my spot to satisfy my cravings. It was the right amount of saucy and a good ratio to the noodles. And having the orange chicken paired with added an alternative to sweet and sour pork that worked just as well. Definitely worth a visit! Parking -- same parking area as Ichiriki on Piikoi next to Ginza nightclub. Pay the box for $1 an hour. Service -- very nice Korean ladies who work here! Very quick to take orders and refill water. Food -- SO GOOD. Large portions! I ordered the regular seafood jajangmyun for $8.95. My friend ordered the spicy seafood jajangmyun $12.95 that only comes in a large size. You can choose mild hot or regular hot. He chose the milder version but he said he wants to try the spicier version. I tried his out and it was SO GOOD. Too bad it only comes in a large size but I recommend you share with someone if you get this unless you are a big eater. I honestly couldn't even finish the regular size! They give so much! I kind of forced myself to finish it cause it was so good and now I'm dying cause I'm extremely bloated. We also got the shrimp gampoongi which is battered and fried shrimp in spicy sauce. If you've read other reviews of mine, you're probably well aware that there's no greater comfort food in my life than a bowl of jjajangmyun (black bean noodles) and an order of tangsuyuk (sweet and sour beef or pork). And although I've yet found the secret to eating jjajngmyun without splashing black bean sauce all over the place, I have learned that the new kid on the block has some serious jjajangmyun game. Tucked behind Piikoi Ichiriki, Dowon took over the spot where Jong Ga Jib used to be. And although a part of me will miss the old restaurant, my melancholy instantly disappeared after my first slurp of noodles. Speaking of the noodles, expect that great chew and texture you look for from any noodle or pasta dish. The jjajang sauce isn't overly salty or soupy, so each bite is maintains that perfect sauce to noodle ratio. The tangusyuk matches the salty jjajangmyun by giving that sweet and savory flavor profile to the meal. The crispy, fried meat is coated with a not too sweet, not too sour sauce, and that texture contrast to the noodles just make for a perfect symphony in my mouth. As is the norm, you can choose between beef or pork, and the meat is served with a variety of vegetables as well, which give for a nice splash of color and a little extra flavor. I know people exaggerate all the time saying they could eat something every day and not get tired of it, and although for the most part I agree it's hyperbole, this is not one of those times. I. COULD. EAT. HERE. EVERY. DAY. Granted, I'd also weigh 300 lbs and probably need to roll my way to and from the restaurant. Why? Well, and this is also not an exaggeration, Dowon might give the most generous portions of food I've ever seen. I fortuitously hit the jjajangmyun jackpot since I work really close by to Dowon, so I've definitely gotten lunch here more than my fair share of times. And a single order of jjajngmyun and an order of tangsuyuk will genuinely feed my coworker and me for two full meals. I know where I'm coming for Black Day (4/14). This is probably the best Korean Chinese place I've been to in Hawaii. They have all the normal "Chinese" foods: jjajangmyeon, jjambbong, and tangsuyuk, and none of the three disappoint. Got takeout the other day and ordered jjajangmyeon. Everything was packed separately and neatly boxed, even the onions, kimchi, and danmuji. The lady was super nice. The only thing is I asked for no cucumber and I still had cucumber on my noodles. Came in late tonight. We got some jjajangmyeon and tangsuyuk. My friend asked for no cucumbers, but they ignored the request again. It's pretty hillarious how badly they want us to eat our vegetables. The food was good, and the service was too. Seriously, one of these waitresses needs to recruit their son and buy him a moped so he can start delivering in the area. They'd absolutely be making bank if that happened. read more

Finally some decent jjajangmyun on this island. Soft noodles with plenty sauce. The jjambbong is super spicy with lots of seafood, just the way it should be. They cleaned the place up good with some new tables and chairs. All the ladies were welcoming and friendly, which is unfortunately not common at Korean restaurants. Best jja jjang myun in Honolulu now! I love this place. I've been here multiple times now and I can't believe a place like this is open now. Atmosphere: Right off of Kapiolani and Piikoi. Shared parking lot need to pay $1 after 6pm. Inside there is limited seating inside mainly booths. Reminds me of the korean-chinese restaurants growing up. Menu is in chinese,korean and english. Service: Great service be ready to order soon after seating. There's really only a few dishes you should be getting anyway. Food: Wow definitely the best jja jjang myun on the island hands down. I've always wanted to try jjajangmyun (aka black bean noodle) :oo or true jjajangmyun? I tried it homemade once before from my friend's mom but there was no spice to it like it was supposed to so I was really curious on how it was supposed to taste Found this little hole in the wall place on yelp and came here with a friend on a whim. It's literally right behind Teapresso Bar 2; where the parking lot is. It's a tiny little restaurant run by Koreans (really nice!) but they also have Chinese food. My friend and I decided to get the jjajangmyun and kung pao chicken. They give complimentary side dishes like raw onions with black bean sauce and pickled daikon. The kung pao chicken wasn't like how you get in an actually Chinese restaurant. It wasn't bad but I'd rather go to Panda Cuisine for kung pao chicken. When we ordered the jjajangmyun, our waitress told us that it was going to be spicy but we were like "It's fine! We can handle it"......we were hella wrong The jjajangmyun was huge! And we were so excited to try it. The first couple bites weren't so bad; the noodles were soft yet firm (al dente? LOL) and there was just a small kick of spice in it but after a couple of minutes, that's when hell broke loose in our mouths. The spice level went from 0-100 real quick and we were practically sweating T_____T I forgot a Korean's definition of spicy was WAAAAY different from normal people's definition. It was so good but we were dying so bad....what helped a bit was the kung pao sauce. We mixed the two together and it brought the spice level down a bit. We were amazed how a dish that has no source of redness (spice) is nowhere to be seen yet it had us crying. It took us forever to finish eating it because we took so much breaks to finish it up xD maybe an hour or so? But we did it! We decided to try this place with a recommendation of a friend. It is hidden inside of a parking lot off Piikoi street so finding the place could be a challenge. If you are going for dinner, I suggest parking on the street or at Ala Moana as their lot get packed fast. This place only has a handful of small booth tables and what appeared to be small separate rooms for private parties. We got there early so snagged the last booth. The menu has a offering of Korean and blended chinese/Korean influenced dishes. I think they are most famous for the black bean noodles which was tasty. Another dish that looked delish and wanted to try was the spicy fried chicken which looked so good in the pics. This dish is on the pricer end at about $18 but I had to have it. To my surprise, the chicken was soggy and lacked any texture from too much gravy. The serving portion was also mediocre so very disappointed. They bring you some daikon, Kim chuee and round onions with a side of hoi sin sauce which was funky. There were two waitresses and the smaller Chinese looking one was super nice and friendly. This was my second time in 3 days eating here. That either says something great about this restaurant or.. that I'm a gluttonous fool. Or both! On my first visit, I had the samsan jajangmyun (has some seafood) and sweet and sour pork (dwaejigogi tangsooyook), today I had the regular jjajangmyun and sweet and sour beef (sogogi tangsooyook). My friends were eating tangsooyook and jjajangmyun for the first time and they really enjoyed it! I can tell the food was cooked with quality in mind, so delicious. And, of course, the service was great, with our waitress making sure we had enough side dishes and drinks throughout our entire meal. Very attentive and friendly, I love this restaurant! I'll definitely be coming back to this wonderful hidden gem, tucked behind Ichiriki and Teapresso 2. There's a parking lot for this business complex but it's a bit cramped and can fill up fast.
