PANCAKES 3/10: I would like to preface that I have been coming to Du-Par's since I was three and I used to LOVE their pancakes. They were the fluffiest and were amazing with the maple syrup. Now, I find that they are doughy and are not worth the price. Sadly, while Du-Par's will always stand as a nostalgic diner, I don't think I will be coming back. Recently my colleagues and I were talking about classic LA Diners. Du-Par's came up and my response was it was just ok. I was in the area and decided to check out Du-Par's. It's been over 35 years since I've been to a Du-Par's. I was seated immediately and greeted by my food server. I ordered an iced tea and a bacon avocado omelette. Outstanding service. Fast and efficient. They serve the best iced tea in a glass with mint and freshly sliced lemon. My omelette and hash browns were delicious. Classic greasy spoon diner food. Ordered some pies for pick up - drove from 1.5 hours away to get specific pies which we paid and processed through for online - once we arrived to pick up both items we had ordered were not available- this was pretty disappointing - the lack of customer service was pretty bad as well. Hope they can work on this and at least give their clients a heads up on out of stock items. read more

Despite having been to the farmers market plenty of times this is my first time at dupars! Came here on a Wednesday morning with one other friend and there was quite a bit of a line. Parking was quite bad, with very little space even in the parking lot. We looped a few times inside and out but eventually found a space. There was quite a bit of a line to be seated but it moved decently fast. Never at any point did it feel too long for us. Though the wait for the food was a little long. But nothing I was mad about. The food here was amazing. We had gotten an eggs Benedict and the seasonal special holiday pancakes to share. They both were delicious but the pancakes knocked it out of the park. They were nice and fluffy and were so satisfying to eat. The eggs Benedict were less memorable but they and the hash browns were good as well! Some people have talked about the customer service being bad. While I had no truly bad experiences I could definitely see how staff seemed rushed. Staff seemed to rush by a lot and they took a second to come take our order. While it's something that didn't take away from my experience one bit, it's something to take note of. Overall I would definitely come again! The pancakes were amazing and I can't wait for the next time I can have them. read more

Came in for Tuesday lunch and was seated right away. Was intrigued by the small diner/holiday vibes. Waited 40 minutes for our food to come out. Service seemed too busy/occupied to be attentive. Ordered the avocado burger, French dip, 1 coke & 1 ranch which was $0.50. Total was around $51. The biggest saving grace was that the food was actually really good. Second time visiting (once for brunch, once for dinner), and I don't think I'll be coming back anymore. There's nothing horrible about this place, but also nothing that stands out amazing. The food is decent, but just okay for the price point. The service is not the most attentive or the fastest. The weirdest thing is that the guest line to be seated and the card payment line is the same. It takes forever for one host to deal with all that. Also keep in mind that your check will give you suggested tips based only on the price of the food, but when you walk up to the register, the card reader will show you suggested tips with tax included. I'm so sad because I wanted to like this place but 2 hours after I ate this for brunch, I started feeling a headache and weak. I took a nap and woke up with a nauseous feeling and while driving I felt the need to roll the windows down for air from the feeling of wanting to throw up. This was the only thing I ate all day and I'm 100% certain I got FOOD POISONING from either the salmon or egg. I saw in the news that Du-Parrs is struggling. I have been to Du-Parrs a number of times but not recently. I had a club sandwich, and my friend had the pot pie. Both of us agreed that the food was delicious. As a lot of people point out, Du-Pars is an institution and when you walk into it, it feels like you are stepping back in time. The service was extremely slow, we were sitting at our table for close to 15 minutes before someone came over. When the food arrived, the person set it down without saying a thing, I asked if I could get ketchup for the fries and the person said something about the waiter, I wasn't sure if he said he would tell the waiter or if he was telling me to tell the waiter, but he simply walked away. I had pretty much eaten my entire sandwich and there was no sign of an employee checking on any of the tables on the front patio. I finally got up and went to the front station to ask for ketchup. I couldn't help but think that this is why they are struggling, the food was good but the service wasn't. read more

I worked up an appetite after walking around a museum, so I was in much need of some food. What better way to satisfy your hunger with some onion rings and a patty melt? After all, as a self-proclaimed patty melt connoisseur, I read that Du-Par's had one of the best around. Well, I gotta say the local diner right next to my office offers up a much better patty melt. The only thing better here at Du-Par's is the grilled onions. It was lacking in flavor and a bit light on the meat patty and not exactly cheesy either. The best patty melt I've found was one at a brewery from a food truck and so far I've yet to find a place that beats it. Their fried zucchinis were good at least, though I'm not sure what the Parmesan really does because it all falls off the zucchini anyway. And while the onion rings were good, the amount they gave you for the price they charge was not worth it. The fries were the crusty types that I love and usually they're great, but they were also just kinda meh here. I tried their Monte Cristo and that was by far the best thing we ordered. A great balance between savory and sweet and with big portions too. Lastly, the service could use some improvement. Everyone was so busy taking down Christmas decorations, wiping down tables, prepping silverware, or on the POS doing stuff that we were largely ignored for a decent amount of time. And our table was absolutely cluttered full of plates. If our server had checked in with us, we would've asked him to clear some of it, but he never came nor did any of the staff. I think the thing that irked me the most was asking for a small side of gravy. My nephew got a cup of water spilled onto his meal, so we needed some more gravy since a lot of it got watered down. It would've been nice if the server gave us a heads up that the dinky little cup of gravy was going to run us $4. And the gravy was bland too. Overall I left Du-Par's disappointed. Not only with the experience, but disappointed with the people who raved about Du-Par's having a good patty melt. It was mediocre at BEST. You're better off trying different foods from different stalls from the Farmer's Market. I would've spent less and been much more satisfied. read more

I can't believe I haven't been here in over a decade! Finally I came by on Sunday around 3 or 4pm. Wow, parking was a disaster (naturally - it's Christmas time) but it's nice that they validate. The hosts don't have much sense in urgency. I think we waited about 15 minutes to be seated even though there were booths open. Our waiter was amazing - William! Super helpful, great sense of humor, and very attentive. We shared the breakfast plate (egg & hash brown), French toast, and pancakes. William suggested the cinnamon apple (I think) for the pancakes and it was yummy. The hash browns were okay, it tasted like it was drenched in butter though. Our food adventures took us to downtown LA again, this time to Du-par's for breakfast at the Farmers Market. It was a beautiful day -- the weather was perfect, and the place had a great atmosphere. The pancakes definitely live up to their tagline -- the best in LA -- absolutely delicious! On the downside, I'm not sure if they were understaffed or just extra busy, but the wait after placing our order took a while, which took a little bit of fun out of the experience. Last night I ordered via Door Dash delivery mozzarella sticks, chicken pot pie, and beef stew in a brioche bun for $57.27. Upon arrival the bun came and there was no beef stew. I then tried the chicken pot pie. It had a sour taste. After a couple bites I went to my kitchen at home to see if I had any gravy type sauce then I thought to myself "is this normal"? One star mainly for service. I came here today for an early breakfast with my family. And the service was just awful. Everyone who worked there looked miserable. Our waiter was not friendly and just plain rude. I wasn't the only one who thought this. I felt so awkward being there. Also, the manager or owner needs to know that it's not okay for their employees to use profanity in front of customers. Apparently they were unaware that I know Spanish and they were cussing and what seemed like complaining about having asked for a straw. If we asked for anything, it seemed like the biggest hassle. As if it bothered them. Food is nothing special too. The only good thing is the overpriced freshly squeezed orange juice. The environment was not good at all. Atleast play light music in the background. The tables were also completely wobbly. Having to have gratuity automatically added also sucks. Especially with such poor service. And only 5 adults. They counted babies who didn't even have food. I would not go back and would suggest you find one of the many other restaurants nearby to try. This review is specific for the blueberry pie at Du par. Went to the farmers market at the Grove, the takeout counter, got a slice of the blueberry pie. Normally, I'm not a fan of pies and normally I'm not a fan of fruit pies. However, this one was so good. I had to get a second. It's not overly sweet, blueberries taste very fresh, the pastry is also well done. Five dollars for a slice of pie, can't find those deals in LA anymore. read more
