I don't write reviews often. Only when the subject deserves either high praise for doing everything right or a scathing critique that'll warn people off. In the case of Easy Tiger, the review falls in the latter category, and it ain't pretty. The way to start is with a study in contrasts, I think. Only ten years ago, Austin was a very different place. One place I enjoyed going back then was Easy Tiger, on 6th street. Tasty bread, large servings, cool patio overlooking the creek, and a huge selection of reasonably priced draft beer kept me coming back. It was a beer garden that tried to do that category of food and drink establishment justice. I was happy to patronize that Easy Tiger to make sure it wouldn't close its doors. Sadly, that would have been too kind a fate. The original location is now shuttered, replaced by three new bland and uninspired satellite locations that lack the same character, ambience, and worst of all, good food and drink. All of this could have been forgiven if they'd kept the same prices, just upped for inflation and labor costs. But nope. The most basic local canned beer goes for 7 dollars, the formerly large and warm pretzel is neither warm nor large and costs much more, and portions are small and the taste middling for the price. (You can see the change in beer prices over just two years by browsing the uploaded photos with full drink menus) Not to mention the serious roiling management and labor issues. It's clear where the money from price hikes is going: into the pockets of a now corporate Easy Tiger that sucked the soul out of a formerly good business and used the money to build many more tasteless lesser copies to try to squeeze as much profit out of a good name as possible. Maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but the trend is pretty clear. What's become of Easy Tiger is increasingly the norm in Austin: Californication. Boost your prices or cut your food portions and quality in half (or some combination, or both), ride on coattails of the name you established a decade ago for as long as you can, and make the place Instagram worthy. Oh, and spend a lot on advertising and fancy new digs. As long as the new money from new transplants flows in, why bother doing anything else? It's a hustle. I'm not necessarily opposed to a place changing. If, that is, the change brings about progress of some sort: more accessibility, more affordability, preserving some semblance of quality, and just respecting what came before you and trying - - trying! - - to do it justice in some small way. And all of that goes for change writ large in Austin. Easy Tiger fails on all of these counts. In most every way, it seems to exemplify the worst of what can become of not just a food establishment, but an entire city and community once outsized demand for authenticity (whatever that means) and the profit motive runs into no resistance and takes over. It doesn't have to be this way. There are food and drink places in Austin that haven't gone the way of Easy Tiger. For instance, I continue to go to Quack's bakery in Hyde Park for good pastries (they've also opened up other locations, and I've liked those too), and Workhorse Bar in North Loop, a small neighborhood bar that's been around for ages. Workhorse in particular deserves recognition for, believe it or not, continuing to offer a selection of 3 dollar draft beers all day, every day, and food that is consistently hearty, simple, and affordable (burgers, fries, mac and cheese, etc.). The selection of draft beer is actually larger than Easy Tiger's, and the drinks better. Most importantly, the service is on point. I've seen the same bartenders working there for years now and haven't had a bad experience. They could double some of their prices, but they didn't, even through the pandemic. It even has a nice outdoors patio. Sadly, nothing really Instagrammable, and a bit grimy at times. It's better for it. (Full review of Workhorse forthcoming...) Don't support Easy Tiger. Just don't. It and everything it represents don't deserve your business, especially when there are alternatives. read more

I really want to love this place, but it's hard to pay $12 for a single 6" sausage with four pieces of waffle fries and leave happy. It's soo so overpriced, I don't think we'd go back just for that reason. FOUR fries came with our order. That's 1/3 of a potato. The food was great, don't get me wrong, it feels like a complete rip off. $9 for a pint of beer to go with that. The atmosphere was really good, with a dog-friendly patio (and it's massive). The service was great, people seems to be really enjoying this place. Overall, the one thing I could suggest to get us back is expand the menu, which is very short, and having more reasonable prices to get more repeat business. read more

I keep saying this out loud "once this is done I am going out to eat and drink all the places I have yet to go to...." and the Linc is going to be on the very top of my list! I have been ordering bread and meats and cheese from Easy Tiger from the downtown location before these Covid times but lately I have been making the delightful trip up North Central from south Austin to get my items. Ordering online is the best way to go as their website and service is super friendly and allows you to see what inventory they have left. I always end up getting at least 3 breads in each order. Super contactless ordering and curbside. You may have a little line to wait but no worries - its all well worth it. I haven't been to easy tiger in about 2 years since the pandemic started, but was a regular since the early days on 6th... and man they've changed! They still have hands down the absolute best pastrami sandwich in town, but 18 dollars for just a sandwich and a few pickles on the side? No sides? Come on guys!!! 14$ for a pretzel? That's just insane for it not even being hot. The size of dipping sauces containers is crazy huge and kinda wasteful... kinda weird, since we only used one (the mustard). 2$ for extra sauce? What!!!! Sadly, 80$ for a sandwich, a cold pretzel, and 4 beers is just not worth it at all to me. 8.50$ for a local beer? I can go get a 6 pack from austin beer works for the same price right down the road. A nice bakery and beer garden. They also have a good menu of coffee and tea. Dogs are allowed on the big patio, but you need to check in with the host for seating. Our server was very kind in getting a water bowl for our dogs as well. The patio is pretty well shaded for the most part so hot sunny days should not be too much of an issue. I really enjoyed the dirt chai latte; you can get this hot or iced. The pretzel was a shareable size and served hot and fresh with the house beer cheese, mustard, and salted whipped butter; all 3 went well with it. I want to like this place. The outdoor patio is great...cozy (even in mid-December) and super dog-friendly. I don't have a pup, but I love being around dogs. The service is great, too. What gets me are the prices. I spent fifteen dollars on a sandwich that was mainly arugula and bread with a slice or two of prosciutto and a few thin shavings of cheese. The sides were a la carte. For $15, you could throw a few waffle fries on the plate. For three sandwiches, one soft pretzel starter and three drinks, lunch cost me $120 before tip. That's crazy. To say nothing of the fact that my $11 old fashioned was mostly ice and simple syrup. The glass was only 3/4 full and no orange or cherry garnish. I'm happy to support local businesses, especially during a pandemic, but $40 per person for a sandwich, a cocktail and part of a pretzel is stupid. read more

Great food. Unfortunately the staff was a bit lackluster and a bit unhelpful. Today we walked in for inside dining and although there is plenty of staff walking around, and no one would make eye contact. We were a bit unsure if someone was to direct us to choose our own table or if we needed to seat ourselves. Once the wait staff arrived, we asked for water and he brusquely pointed to the room temperature yeti for self serve water. Had a lovely night at Easy Tiger, hanging out with family and enjoying the weather. They did a really great job designing this location and the service was excellent (thanks Jake!) We ordered the sausage plate and cheese plate as starters. The sausage plate was awesome, really cool to be able to try all of them. While all were really good, I especially enjoyed the Hatch Green Chili Cheddar. My only criticism is their house mustard was so weak-tasting it was more like sweet pickle relish than your traditional ground mustard for brats. It's a cool way to get to try all their sausages before you pick your main. The cheese plate was a disappointment. For $35 we got a giant pile of grapes and oranges, a teeny little chunk of Blue Cheese, a small-ish chunk of brie, and a few small chunks of a hard cheese that was very average. Antonelli's is local, we know what this stuff costs and you legit gave me about 3 bucks worth of cheese. Dumping a pound of grapes and orange slices on top doesn't justify a 10x markup. Either lower the price or put more cheese on the plate (or don't, I'm not going to order it again). There were also like 6 tiny olives total. Dried apricots were not present at all. Unless you want to pay 35 bucks to eat a ton of fruit, I'd skip it. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Sausage, and while the sausage was delicious, the first half of the roll was dry as hell. I figured out why when I got to the last 25%, the cream cheese and relish were all in one end. My s/o loved the prosciutto baguette, so that was a hit. I am honestly a little concerned, this is the first time I've reviewed this location, but far from the first time I've been here. It felt like a slip downhill, and I hope that's all in my head because I really like this place. They never miss with the beers, they always have great local stuff on tap. This was my first night out since the pandemic started and since I moved to Austin. I came on a busy Friday night and still felt very safe with the precautions they were taking. The tables outside were all 6 feet apart and everyone wore masks when not at their tables. There are no physical menus and ordering is very easy via their website online. Each table has an associated number and QR code so that servers know where to bring the food. The servers were all wearing proper PPE and were very friendly and helpful. The waffle fries and pretzels here are absolutely delicious and a go great after a couple of drinks. Easy Tiger ain't what it used to be. Once upon a time the pastrami sandwich had THE best pastrami I'd ever had on it...thick cut, tons of flavor, moist, and a pile of it. They used to make a Reuben out of it too that was damn good. The bread made an impression and became popular because it was left in the oven long enough to develop a rich, hearty crust. The Chex mix and the jerky were fantastic. And the pretzels were known for being huge...even when you ordered the small one. Mug club members got 20oz pours of most beers. Sure, the swag was cheap and the build out was a bit rough around the edges, but there was character and delicious food and fun service. Today that's all dead. They don't serve most of it anymore. Not enough profit. Too much effort. What they do still serve has been cheapened, had corners cut, and otherwise been nipped and tucked to fit a growingly bland palette averse to bread with real crust and pastrami with fat. The pretzels make Auntie Anne's look large. The sausages don't come on pretzel buns. Mention jerky or Chex mix or ribs and you'll be met with the puzzled look of a new hire working yet another food service job that won't stand out from the rest in any meaningful way. But hey, they have notebooks and candles and cute tiger plushies, and there's enough word of mouth about them that the newbies still think it's the place to try. And for the record, none of this was the doing of Covid or supply chain issues. They started aggressively cutting costs in 2019, changing the menu so often even full-time staff and managers had a hard time telling you which menu was for this week. I don't know if there's still a bit of soul left in the old dog or if this is death by another means in the Austin of new, but after literally hundreds of visits over the last 10 years, I don't find myself there anymore. read more

How could you NOT give Easy Tiger 5 stars?! The food alone is worth 10 stars, and the service is always great. They are doing an awesome job with their social distancing protocols, and that is worth 5 stars alone. I ordered food for pickup online ahead of time, and the process was pretty easy. I ordered hot food so I had to go to the back of the building, park in a spot, and text a number to wait for my order. It was ready within five minutes. My favorite menu items at Easy Tiger are the pretzels (duh), and the veggie sausage. I seem to remember at their downtown location when it was open they used to have a different veggie sausage and it used to be way more flavorful. The beyond meat sausage wasn't bad, I just remember the one they used to have being way more delicious. Not sure I would get the veggie sausage again, but I would definitely go back for the pretzel. Heard about Easy Tiger from an Uber driver and it sounded great, so I came to check it out. Wanted a cider and the bartender gave me some samples to try out and went with the Austin Eastcider. Later got the Shackbury Rose Cider both were different, but tasty. The bartender was amazing by the way, I don't remember his name but he had a nice beard. It was around closing time and he came with these two pastries for my partner and I. It was a Cinnamon Knot and Raspberry Danish, which both were very delicious! They make all of their breads and pastries in house which I love. Definitely have to come back and try some of the food options and cocktails. Easy Tiger is one of my favorite places to hang out with friends/coworkers during the weekdays. They have a spacious outdoor seating place with awnings and overhead roofing. There's plenty of parking around the area as well. During peak times, i.e., happy hour, there can be up to a 30 min wait for a table. The food is delicious! The giant pretzel is super filling, the beyond bratwurst is hearty and flavorful, and the waffle fries and shishito peppers make the perfect sides. Though I'm sure outdoor patios (in December) are a staple in Austin, this Pacific North Westerner was feeling the 'winter' vibes. A) Parking B) good booze and food C) friendly staff D) outdoor patio for small humans and doggos to hang out E) Not in Downtown Austin. ET and the Linc pretty much checks all these boxes. The waiter brought out one water and that was it. I had to go hunt down the rest of the waters and silverware as he never brought us any more. Food came and it was fine. Nothing great but not bad. We still hadn't received our drinks even after inquiring about them multiple times, both with the waiter and bar. At this point we no longer wanted them as we were almost done with our meals. I haven't dined here, but I came here to pick up bread during COVID-19. I pre-ordered online. I pulled up to the drive-thru when I arrived, and they handed me my bread right away.
