TL;DR -- Customer service: 1/10 Food: 5/10 Customer service is slow and pickup system is confusing. The only COVID precaution enforced is mask wearing: some staff handling food were not wearing gloves, staff handles money and do not sanitize afterwards. Food is definitely quantity over quality (items I ordered were not fresh, overly salty or not seasoned). _____ I had a huge craving for Mexican food this week so I decided to stop by El Burrito Express, a location that has been in this area for years. I was glad to see this spot still around and I was surprised that their prices had not gone up that much over the years. I made an order online through Yelp/GrubHub for two beef avocado tostadas, a Meat el Burrito with carne asade, a two beef enchiladas plate and a churro. When I finally reached the location, there was already a line out the door and a few people waiting inside. I saw previous posts and photos on Yelp where there was a dedicated system to pick up orders (tapping on glass?), but did not see this sign up anymore after I walked around the perimeter of the restaurant. Since there were already the max amount of folks inside, I opted to wait in line... for over 30 minutes. People entered the restaurant as they pleased (I'm assuming for pickups?), ignoring the maximum capacity set for COVID. I understand that it was a Friday night, so staff was slammed, but they seemed to take their sweet time assembling food. It was my mistake that I waited in line instead of skipping it since I had already made an order for pickup, but the pickup system was so confusing and there were already so many people waiting inside. As for COVID precautions, they do require staff and customers to wear masks and there is plexiglass separating patrons from staff. However, I did see some staff that were assembling food without gloves and they are NOT strictly contactless, as there were customers that paid in cash and staff did not sanitize afterwards. Customer service was extremely slow. When I finally got to the counter, I was not helped until maybe 5 minutes later. As for the food... we received a huge bag of free chips with the order, but most of it tasted like it was fried in old oil (?). The beef avocado tostada was nothing special and the avocados did not taste fresh. The Meat el Burrito was great value for the size, but was under seasoned. The two enchiladas plate was massive, but was very salty. The churro was denser that what I am used to and also did not taste fresh. There are unfortunately not many great Mexican places in this area, but I will definitely go out of my way to make a trip to the Mission instead of visiting EBX again. read more

I've ordered doordash from here twice now and thought this place was pretty solid. The portion sizes are good, the foot itself is good and seems like a new spot to get my burrito fix. I ordered the enchilada plate with the carne Assad nachos. The nachos had a good amount of meat on them and had sour cream, Guac and salsa. Enchilada plate comes with Spanish rice and beans. Update: Today's visit was the complete opposite of my initial , as I walked in I was greeted by the staff , I was helped by Mila. she was a wonderful host who was kind and cheerful . Today I tried the surf and turf and this was a perfect combination of meats and fillers. The shrimp were grilled to perfection as well as the Asada . Everything was very fresh and well prepared . They had a handwritten sign saying prices have increased since meat prices have gone up...you're probably thinking, ok an extra dollar or two. I was skeptical at first because of the 3.5 star rating but I gave it a chance and do not regret doing so. I got El Terrapin burrito in a spinach tortilla. They gave me a free bag of chips and some salsa. The burrito was amazing and the salsa's were very flavorful. I loved the red one which was spicy. They didn't give me napkins though. I asked if they were still open sincr it looked like they were cleaning up and the one lady that I made eye contact with just walked away without saying anything or acknowledging me. My family and I decided to have lunch in the sunset before heading out to the Presidio. We were pondering where and saw El Burrito Express. I went to this burrito place when I was in college but stooped since I moved down to San Mateo County. We parked and arrived at EBX at 11 AM. I had two people waiting in line before they came to me to take my order. I had the el pastor taco salad, my daughter and wife had the carne asada burrito, and younger daughter had a cheese and rice burrito. I must say the meal was delicious and no complaints from the other members of the family. Again to avoid the lines, go there early or you may phone in your order and pick up at a later time. It was too late for a burrito lunch so I ordered a side of rice and beans and salsa. Communication through plastic and a mask on the other side of the plastic and streetcar noise was difficult so I wound up not getting the salsa in the bag, but just the commando black beans and rice was quite flavorful and served hot. Horrible service. I arrived at 10am (the website said 10am opening time). However upon arrival, I was told that they will open at 10:30am because they were not ready. I went to El Burrito often growing up in the city. Visited last week and stopped by to try my fav and see how it is now. Got the El Expresso. This is a big burrito with whatever meat, I chose steak. Its got all the other stuff in it like beans guac, pick and whatever else. The best part is the sauce and cheese they put on top. This comes with chips and hot sauce. It was soooo good! They have the saucy stewed juicy moist chicken, which is why burritos in SF Nor Cal are often better than LA So Cal, who tends to go grilled and dry. The place gets HOT inside because of the grill and small space The service is friendly. Being from outside of SF, if you don't know, now you know... if you want a bag for your food and didn't bring one, you can and will have to pay to buy one. That's the one thing about the liberally green too eco conscious rules of San Francisco (who, at restaurants also charges a surcharge fee to pay for their employees health insurance, so you're paying for food, tax, insurance and are also expected to tip for service too!) that is hurting many restaurants relationships with their customers. A fixture of this neighborhood for several years. If you've spent some time in Parkside, you'll know this is one of the few places to get your fix of Tex-Mex, without having to resort to the Taco Bell that's also on Taraval Boulevard). Huge burritos will leave you satisfied. Price is a little high, but that seems typical for San Francisco establishments. This place usually has a crowd, and there is not much in the way of seating inside. Luckily, this is right by a MUNI L line light rail stop, so it makes it easier to get to than most other places. No parking lot, and street parking can be difficult on Taraval (and it will get even worse with the new changes they will be making, a la Geary Boulevard and other streets, where they will be taking out parking and adding MUNI-only lanes). Enjoy this location sooner rather than later! read more

When I left my place to meet up with friends at the Street Food Festival in the Mission, I knew parking was going to be tough. But circling for OVER AN HOUR and still no space? That's just mean. While I normally get their regular burrito and go on my way, I decided to try the El Expresso Burrito (with carnitas) since I saw it was listed as "best in house". Although I know a lot of people that really like Burrito Express, I still think their food is just okay. My burritos from them in the past have been neither great not bad, and this one was more of the same. I liked their special expresso sauce that they poured on top, but I thought the carnitas needed a little help. The flavor was decent, but the meat felt somewhat overcooked. In the grand scheme of things, Burrito Express sits in the middle of the pack of taquerias for me. Given the Sunset's slim pickings and the relatively easy parking though, Burrito Express is pretty solid choice for something convenient. I wasn't craving the usual cheap delivery options: chinese, indian, thai, etc. But I also didn't want to pay an arm and a leg to get something delivered. Saw El Burrito Express on Postmates with a $4.99 delivery fee, so decided to give them a shot. I placed our order around 8:05pm and it arrived a little more than 30 mins later. Prices below are what's listed on Postmates, but I believe their prices may be a little higher as my subtotal was $16.78 for all 3 items. *El expresso ($7.65): carnitas, mexican rice and refried beans, guac, pico, special expresso sauce and cheese on top (no sour cream) *Asada fries ($6.75): french fries, carne asada, expresso sauce, onion, cheese, guacamole, pico (no sour cream) *Hard shell taco ($1.75): ground beef and chorizo, taco shell, lettuce, cheese and taco sauce Their asada fries were good. Lots of melty cheese, guac and pico. I wanted more sauce though as it was kind of dry. The hard shell taco managed to stay crunchy given the trip to outer richmond. But the beef/chrizo didn't have much flavor. I had a bite of the roommate's burrito. I don't like beans, so I didn't care for the sauce as it tasted a little beany. They also gave us two small bags of chips and a salsa. I liked the salsa as it had a good spice. Wish they gave us two sides of salsa as it was really only enough for one bag of chips. A couple years ago, the roommate and I went to their other location on Divisadero. I remember the food being better at that location. Plus, I got a free churro for checking in through Yelp! Looking for a local taqueria to satisfy my Mexican craving. Ordered El Bronco since rice is always a lil much for me. Got the al pastor, subbing the avo for guac. The burrito size was bigger than expected.. as if there was rice in it. I was able to get a second meal out of it. Taste-wise, pork marinade was yum and overall had good balance. San Francisco county bag fee is .10c Usually when You order 3 burritos, chips and hot sauces also come with the purchased items... I am here at least 1x a month some times once a week... I'm assuming the cost of a bag is usually included in the order as I've never asked for a bag in the 30 years I've been coming here nor have I looked at the receipt since the bag ordinance passed in 2012... Last time I checked we were in SF County and not San Mateo County...Anyway, I charged the meal since I usually don't carry cash around and used my change to pay the meter so naturally I had my card to pay the .25c self imposed bag fee instead of what I thought was .10c must be different for take out vs. retail... She was annoyed I did not have a quarter and told me it was fine but next time I need to pay, well I've never been asked before I did not think it was necessary this time... In any event this place is still good for food, quality, but service is seeming to be nickel and dime lately... The rice, beans, meat, and the whole shebang just kind of sprinkled out whereas it would be pouring out like a mad flood of deliciousness at other places. Overall, the burrito just did not hit the spot. Sad to say. Service has much to be desired for. I know this isn't even a restaurant but the lady taking orders could have refrained from resting her head on her hands while she was taking orders like she was really annoyed. One burrito with NO FLAVOR at all, and one burrito with TOO MUCH SALTY FLAVOR. My salty burrito could have added some flavor to my son's burrito and to another one. The only good thing was the chips and salsa. It is now 10 something pm- and I am very thirsty. There is only one cashier and the pick-ups drivers, understandably in a hurry, end up cutting the line ahead of people picking up their order as well. I ordered a super bean and cheese burrito, and was surprised to see the orange hue of cheddar cheese upon the first bite! My wife was not all that thrilled about it, but cheddar cheese in my burrito brought me back to the burritos my grandfather would make me as a kid. A real Tex-Mex flavor I hadn't considered cheddar to be until EBX brought it back!
