After searching around to see which bakeries made durian birthday cakes, decided to order from Fancy Wheat, which is a fairly new bakery in the Sunset. We usually go for their yummy egg tarts and buns but this is my new favorite item! Really like the bakery here. It's always fresh and the cake here is so flavorful, so soft and full of flavor. Service can be better but at the same time what do we expect they're all hella rude. Up and down Irving street everyone is like that which is hella sad. It is a bit better than Chinatown. I'm not racist. I'm Chinese too but asain are one of the most rudest people. Cash only Chinese bakery. It sells your normal baked goods (for example: pineapple buns, curry bread, etc). I bought 2 pineapple buns and 2 curry puffs to try. Most places don't make curry puffs anymore since the flaky pastry is a bit more work than putting the curry filling in a milk pastry. Curry puff review: the size is ok, not a super small pastry. The pastry is flaky and rich, as it should be. The probably use lard to make the pastry. The filling was a bit too salty for my taste and had too many chunks of fat in it. The curry puff from Napoleon bakery in Oakland is much higher quality. Cost is $1.80 for one. Pineapple bun: Pretty standard, there was a decent amount of crust on it. I felt like the bread was a little too chewy for my taste. Costs 85¢ for one. I like that they make mousse cakes as I'm not a fan of the fruit sponge cakes with whipped cream found in many more traditional Chinese bakeries. A single layer cake costs about $32. If I was in the area I might come back if I was hungry. Next time I'll try the Portuguese tarts. read more

Best bakery on Irving. Forget Shengkeg and their overpriced baked goods. Everything is fresh out of the oven and oh so delicious. Prices are reasonable. My fav is their hot dog bun ($1.30), beef curry ($1.10) pork buns ($1.30 - it's softer and juicier, not as dense like Cafe Bakery's), and their Macau tarts ($1.80) Omg, their Macau tarts are soo good! Or, are they consider portuguese egg tart? Crispy crust and the filling is very flavorful and sweet. Not sure why there are bad reviews about this place? I'm Chinese and all bakeries/dimsum takeout places are all rude. U just pay and go. Don't expect 5 star service especially when literally it's a fast food store. Relax k? Since this location opened I've been visiting quite regularly as I don't leave far from here. I like getting the Sesame walnut bun here as its a specialized pastry here and I've tried their other pastries and their decent. Prices are really cheap for baked good considering this is in SF. Until recently pastries were adequately fresh and portions generous for their size. Last couple of visits though when I bought pastries here they had less filling in them. I just thought oh just a bad batch this time. I came again today and not surprisingly their was little to no filling in the pastries I bought. I'm guessing maybe cause of cost constraints their limiting their ingredients but to the extend you will put little to no filling? I can't I'm entice to come back anymore after these last couple of visits. I'll just visit one of the other many bakeries in the area instead. read more

Pastries purchased for Mother's Day was not fresh. Fruits on top of the pastry pieces were dried out and seemed at least a day old if not even more? Affordable and delicious bakery. My good friend showed me around the area and said this is one of her go-to bakeries. I like how low the prices are and the quality of the various breads. The pastries are mostly good, the beef curry pie, wife's cake, cocktail buns, but the store used to give you a box for your pastry, but today, after a $25 purchase, she put all my pieces of pastries in their individual plastic bags on the table (since I did not want to buy a 25 cent plastic bag) and no box, how do you expect people will carry their cake purchase? I like their prices and bread - it's great! Keep in mind it's cash only. They have two different types of egg tarts (macau and regular). Macau has the caramelized top and the traditional eggtart is just an eggtart. Wish they kept them heated though. It's crazy to see how quickly they fill up with people, make sure you go when it's emptier, or you'll be fighting with some people for the bread! The pastries and cakes are good, but unfortunately the consistent poor customer service will soon run their business into the ground. Management: please train your staff to treat your customers with respect or at the least acknowledge customers when they approach the register...say thank you after each transaction! Simple tasks. My mom loves it when I buy her the fruit sponge cake for her birthday. It's not very sweet and they put a lot of fruits on and inside of the cake. Plus, the cake comes in a cute box with candles and a cutter. I was able to transport the cake for 3 hours and the cake was still firm and tasted fine. read more

You can't go wrong with the buns and pastries here. They always taste fresh especially when you get them in the morning. We love the HK milk tea, it tastes strong! And recently I got a small fruit cake ($16) and they provided a free kit with candles, forks, plates, and serving knife. So impressed. The cake was of course amazing and fruits tasted fresh. Kudos to their Irving Street Team!! A month ago I visited their other shop on San Bruno Ave. Workers there are rude and unpleasant. Weeks prior I called to reserve cakes for Christmas Eve pick up, an older woman voice that answered the phone sounds uninterested and impatient, Meeting them at the shop didn't make me feel better. Their sole interests was to rushing you out. Two days ago I called this Irving shop, lady I spoke to was nice and courteous. When coming yesterday, I felt welcome by their warmth. Particularly, when they learned I parked a block away for a three cake pickup, they gave heartfelt advices like not to carry them by the decorative wraparound ribbons, make 2 trips ... etc. When the manager, Mr. Choy, heard of it, he offered a carry out. Both San Bruno Ave and Irving Street bakeries baked good cakes, customer service comparison is Hell at their San Bruno Ave shop and Heaven on Irving!! Who wouldn't like good service!! To the managers and owner: Cashier lady needs to go. You have a great product. We brought a chestnut cake. We love everything about the cake. The presentation, the package, the included candles and plastic knife. About the Cashier lady, why is she so rude to all the customers. My wife was asking about the Happy Birthday sign , the cashier yelled at her saying it is already there. She thought we knew everything about the operations and implied saying why you even asked. We paid money for your product. There are many bakeries out there. Look at Pineapple King a few blocks from your place. They have a long line all the time. You don't! Without the customer service improvement, the bad taste of the experience will be the negative talking point from your customers. Have you ever not appreciated something because it's just to "regular" of an item? I am admitting to my mistake now. I have been getting their loaves of sweet sliced bread here for some time now. It is $8 a loaf but it is far superior to other sliced bread out there and believe me, I have tried it all. I realized this review is overdue because this past weekend I tried Breadbelly's milk bread loaf at $11 and was so disappointed that it just makes me appreciate Fancy Wheat's so so much more. My go-to neighborhood bakery! Excellent price and always delicious! They have similar stuff to big chain bakeries but also have some Asian specialties that I haven't found anywhere else. My favorite is the plain rectangular spongecake, reminiscent of what my mom likes from China. To me it's perfect because it's very subtly sweet and airy. read more

The buns are pretty good, but not good enough to come here and endure their customer service. The cashiers were yelling at a poor elderly woman just over a plastic bag. The cashiers called me and straight up THREATENED me to come to the bakery, AN HOUR before closing. If I didn't come within the next half hour, she said, I wouldn't get the cake I preordered. When I ask for a bag, the lady at the counter didn't answer my question and later she yelled and cursed at us. The attitude is so terrible. All this things happened after we paid. I would've given this bakery more stars for their buns are pretty good. However, the customer service I've received the past couple of times are extremely unacceptable! I drive 15 miles there every week to purchase certain pastries for my son. Unfortunately, due to my recent experiences I will no longer be going there anymore. I don't feel that being rude to a paying customer was necessary. I found myself clenching in hopes that the older rude lady would not be at the counter. It feels hostile in that store I hope that the owners will find my message and train their employees a bit more in their customer service skills. read more

They make the best sponge cakes! Their cakes are moist and beautifully decorated. They use fresh fruits and decorate their cakes by cutting fresh fruits to look like roses. They use a big piece of chocolate to write happy birthday and even give candles, plates, forks and cake server with the purchase of their cakes. The prices are a little bit higher than other Chinese bakeries but you pay for what you get. read more

Have to admit - it's a good bakery with lots of choices. However, besides the poor customer service as many have mentioned here, hygiene is a horrible issue. If you pay close attention, you will see the paper tray liners being recycled from previous customers', even the box liners are used. Cashiers wear the same pair of dirty gloves to pack the pastries while getting cash from their customers. Due to the rudeness of staff and critical hygiene issue, this place only deserves the lowest review unfortunately. read more
