Went here last night. They were about to close. I was really feeling guilty about being "that guy", marching in there with 10 minutes to close asking these fine gentlemen to make me a cheeseburger and fries. Not a single bit of contempt showed in their faces as I awkwardly scuttled forward and apologized profusely for my lack of consideration. I quickly ordered a burger and fries, and just moments later they delivered on what was one of the most beautiful gourmet fast food burgers I've had in a while. There was something about the buns perfectly rounded, perhaps lightly grilled in grease, hugging the burger patty with melted cheese and fresh toppings. I immediately knew I would be coming back, and soon. Hunkering down on an island of grass in the parking lot of the establishment at around 10:00 pm, I proceeded to engulf the burger with fervor and abandon for all of the hardships and pain I experience every day whether regarding my relationship or career struggles, sometimes a lack of self-love or a dissociation from my feelings...everything came rushing back; a love for life, a sense of hope, a feeling of being less alone. It was Fantastic, and as I finished my meal by scarfing down every last French fry in fresh ranch dressing, I thought to myself, "Well, that was amazing. This is our local cafe that we enjoy breakfast. My man loves the Fantastic Omelette. Good portion size for him and delicious. I opt for my own creation of a vegetarian breakfast burrito.... It will last me a whole day or two because of the size. I love the salsa too!!!! But I really enjoy the people that work there. They are very kind. They are helpful and remember their customers. I had the chili dog w/cheese & my daughter had the kid's meal with grilled cheese & fries & beverage. They advertise their chili as homemade & I agree as it is very good. The actual hot dog was ok. The grill cheese and french fries were good. The fries have a good seasoning. Big turn off though and maybe the manager should say something. This place has a gym next-door and literally a gym person walked in totally sweaty; didn't even buy anything and walked in with an empty cup just to return it. There's a few Fantastic Cafes around the LA area. Decided to come here for a quick breakfast this AM since I wanted to avoid the streets of Long Beach due to the LB Marathon was today, and most of the streets in the city were blocked for several hours this AM. I opted for 3 eggs over medium, with bacon, hash browns and sour dough toast with coffee. It wasn't overly crowded on this Sunday morning. So I sat down with my LA Sunday Times in hand and my cup of jo. Considering the simplicity of my order, it took longer than usual at a fast food joint. When I finally got my order, the eggs were cooked a perfect over medium. But the 4 pieces of bacon were a bit under cooked for my liking. And the frozen hash browns, weren't even golden brown. They weren't cooked enough. One of my sourdough toast was almost burnt. The name Fantastic is a bit ironic (as Anthony N. pointed out to me in a compliment)....nothing too Fantastic about this place. For weeks, Yelp keeps bugging me to write a review - so here goes. My visit wasn't all the good. The pastrami was done California/Mexican style and I have a lot better in the same type of style - a lot better. Arry's Super Burger in Montebello gets it right, not this place. I did find the restaurnt very clean and the private parking lot had plenty of avialable parking, but note, I was not visiting duirng prime time. After doing this review, I think I may head to Montebello soon for a great tasting oversized pastrami sandwich. Is there ever too much pancake? My dog never thinks so. My compliments to FC for the breakfast deal. The meal was just as it was listed; eggs, sausage, and pancakes. The stars are for "I was full and had pancake leftover." Yet, I'm really a hash brown girl at heart so I expect I will have to make another trip to stare at the breakfast menu and see if I can find my type of breakfast. I've been coming here for many years, and I am still impressed by how many different dishes that Fantastic offers. They have everything - breakfast, burgers, mexican, and even some Mediterranean! Their menu is so long that I have never even read it all the way through. It's pretty impressive! The food is priced really great. A kid's meal is usually enough for me so it's always under $5. Also, if you show a CSULB ID, you get 10% off your total, which is really nice for students since it is so close to the school. They have complimentary chips and salsa that you can have while you wait for your food. They open early and close late, so it is difficult to find a time when they aren't open. We discovered that Best Place Cafe has closed so we decided to try Fantastic Cafe. It wasn't too busy and we got our order in right away. We had both ordered the Polish Sausage and Eggs which comes with hash brown potatoes and toast at $7.20 a plate. With coffee and OJ it came out to about $20. They give you a generous portion but you soon realize that they are sacrificing quality or quantity. The eggs were OK and the hash browns were of the Costco variety. The worst was the sausage. They gave you a portion of three sausages cut in half which was LOADED with salt. That's all you could taste and was pretty disgusting. It definitely was of low quality meat. Worth it? I have been coming here for 4 years now and this place has never let me down! The main reason I keep coming here is there incredible amount of Carne Asada Fries for about $7.50!! The amount is so ridiculous it can feed me and my brother, leaving the both of us full (Two guys with big appetites right there). Most other places I go to for Carne Asada Fries does not even serve that much and can cost way more, leaving me and my stomach sad ;(. This Fantastic cafe is a notch below Volcano burger. If you are closer to Volcano burger, you should go there instead. We have had some decent breakfasts here, but lunch and dinner leaves much to be desired. The place is usually packed with college kids searching for hangover food, which is pretty entertaining until one of them has to hurl. The owner's son was playing with my daughter once and kept playing the game where you try to grab a toy with a crane. He went back and forth to the register getting quarters and he eventually won her a doll. Last month I got a pastrami melt with fries and a drink for less than $10. Today I was going to get a combo ...same order and it was almost $15. So cancelled the drink and paid $12.95...the sandwich is 8.95 so the fries cost an extra $4.00 for a small plate of fries. Outrageous! I used to really like this place but I recently stopped in for a chili tamale and was reminded of their deceptive menu pricing. The menu price was $5.00. Not bad, except when she asked if I wanted cheese and onions I asked her if that was included and she said no, that it would be another $1.50. They pulled that on me on another occasion when I ordered a chile size and slipped the extra $1.50 onto the check. I asked the cashier why they just didn't include the extra charge on the menu pricing. She just shrugged her shoulders guiltily. And oh yeah, the chile tamale was awful. The fantastic omelette had a mixture of ham, sausage, green pepper, and mushroom. Yess, it was a good portion of food but the flavor itself wasn't that great. The flavor was very bland. It taste like the one I make at home everyday. Plain and bland. The egg was very dry not puffy. Also, the hash brown was bland and flavorless. I'm a hash brown fan but this hash brown wasn't tasty. Updating my review after having lunch here today. As far as simple, take-out burgers go, this is still my favorite place. Their burgers are on par or better than say in-n-out, but not as good as some of the gourmet/restaurant burgers out there. More importantly, they have the best fried zuchinni around town. Fresh cut, not that weird frozen stuff. I also like their gyro sandwich. It's well spiced, and they are generous with the amount of gyro meat they give. Some places are stingy and fill it with lettuce and tomatoes. All in all, this is a solid burger place. We were here for breakfast; the food was good, portions were perfect, service was very good, and it was tremendous value for the price. They were good about keeping coffee cup filled, and for when they don't have time to make rounds the coffee pot is on the counter for self serve refills. The coffee is not gourmet but is was very drinkable. Good about accommodating vegetarians, swapped meat for potatoes...initially saying they would need to charge extra, but after mentioning we were vegetarian they made the swap. Given meat is more expensive than potatoes I'm not sure why it took encouragement. Pancakes and French Toast were both good, and we left full but not overstuffed. I had two good size pancakes, I think my wife had 3 slices of French Toast. All in all, I consider this a find and wish there were places like this closer to where we live. I used to come here a lot because the portions were big, it was cheap and close to my house. Prices have significantly gone up but food quality has just plummeted. The onion rings are actually inedible, they're always so burnt now it's impossible to chew through. You do not get what you order. Order a salad with ranch, you get yellow pieces of lettuce in a bowl and 2 cherry tomatoes. No dressing, nothing else. Just disappointing. The fries are a hit or miss. Either they're a great texture and flavorful, or they're burnt and have no salt. No in-between and not worth the gamble. They've changed the menu to not include drinks with the combos which is also...disappointing. It's the same price as before, but it comes with less. The service has always been bad. This is the one consistent thing about the place. Anyone who has been coming here is familiar with their particularly bad customer service. Most of the employees are unfriendly if not outright rude. All around, I say avoid this place. There are plenty of restaurants where you can get a smile and lots of good food for the same price now. There's nothing special about this place anymore and it amazes me that they're still in business. Solid place. I come here always for the Greek salad. I phone it in before I get to work in the morning. Im happy they open so early. The cashier is nice and always remembers me no matter how long it's been since I've been in there. The greek salad is pretty big, plenty of strips of grilled chicken, feta cheese ,plenty of veggies that you find in a typical greek salad. The pita triangles they give you are bomb, its like they spread just a little bit of butter on them and it just seeps into the bread mmmmmmm. This Café has been at this location for probably 20 years now, and I used to take my little son there to play the "claw" machine and attack the cheeseburger meal. I recently stopped by a few different times, and realized that the menu has remained pretty static over the years. The prices have jumped a bit though. In my opinion their breakfasts are pretty darned good, especially the biscuits and gravy and the Denver omelet. The burgers remain tasty, with a very distinctive flavor and smell. The fries are seasoned uniquely as well, and I prefer them to any other fast food style restaurant. This Café definitely has a taste of its own, and it's worth a visit - especially since there are no other restaurants anywhere nearby. read more
