Wow. This has got to be the most expensive Chinese take-out food I've ever had in my life. 2 entrees, 2 (non-alcoholic) drinks, and a small bowl of rice ran about $50. Bear in mind that this is a fast-casual type of place where you order at the counter, and then either sit at a table or take your food to go. For that price point, I was expecting to be mesmerized. The food was okay but nothing spectacular. The menu consists of various American Chinese dishes that are kind of like what you get at Panda Express. Entrees are meant to be served family style, so a buddy and I split the Mary's Orange Chicken and the Pan Fried Noodles. The chicken was extremely average. It consisted of chunks of white meat slathered in a zesty orange glaze. I wasn't a big fan of the noodles. I was expecting something along the lines of chow mein, but instead was served a heap of noodles that were saturated in some sort of viscous, goopy sauce. The sauce was bland and completely overwhelmed the dish, to the point where I couldn't tell the noodles were fried at all. It just tasted greasy and heavy. The fortune cookies were the star of the show, hands down. I believe they bake them in house, and it wouldn't surprise me if they lace them with crack because they're that addictive. I think the food here is very good. The pricing always seems a bit steep to me- but i often have leftovers for a second meal, which makes it reasonable i suppose. The tea bar is comprehensive but very expensive, so i often overlook it. Parking in the area or in the lot is dfficult. The pork jowl fried rice is addictive - as is the walnut shrimp. Fat Dragon is so good that I've ordered take out from them 3x this week. I can't get enough of Fat Dragon's orange tofu or tiger peppers. The orange tofu is breaded and fried like orange chicken with the most flavorful orange sauce. The tiger peppers are spicy Anaheim peppers sautéed in garlic and black pepper sauce. Both sauces are lick-your-plate quality. Also of note are the string beans and the fried mushrooms. The fried mushrooms taste just like calamari! Finally, the fortune cookies are homemade and the best in the city! Even Fat Dragon's chopsticks are the best, extra long and wooden which helps prevent my clumsiness. Also Fat Dragon has a tea bar! Parking can be hard if there's no space since it's in a strip mall area and some spots are valet only. The restaurant itself is pretty small, as there's one long table and booths table on the wall. Went here for a date and omg was it amazing. Service was great, ambiance was chill. They played biggie!? Really cool, small place. Our food came out really fast too. I ordered the orange chicken, stir fried noodles and the szchesuan spicy wontons and I think my life is complete. The orange chicken was delicious and zesty, not like any other O.C. I've ever had before. The stir fried noodles had this viscousy liquid that tasted like childhood. But the wontons took the cake. They were definitely spicy, super tasty and just so worth it. To drink I had the passion fruit goji berry, it was just ok but the presentation made it worth it. To end it we had the housemade fortune cookies. I have no idea what they do to make it taste so good but holy cow. I've never had a fortune cookie make me want more so bad. I did notice that there were a lot of take out orders. It being a small place I understand why that would be. Probably a better idea but we were the only ones in there that night so I don't know. Really great place overall. 10/10 would recommend. I did not particularly like this place the first time I went, but my wife loves their wings. I went back this weekend to get my wife some wings and I got some noodles. When I picked up the food and brought it home I had the wrong order. I had some poor fellow named Matt's order. (Sorry Matt.) Anyway, I called them because I needed the wings for my wife. They were sorry, and they told me to keep Matt's order, which was a big order of food that I would have never thought to get. I went back, got the wings and went back home. Matt's order was delicious and it lasted all weekend. I ate Matt's order for dinner and for lunch the next day. Hidden, not so hidden gem. Competing with very og and popular local neighborhood spots, this little place brings so much to the table. Their specialty dishes ('dragon' this and that) are packed with well balanced flavors. Their ice teas are unique and refreshing. I'm Chinese and I'm so happy to find a place that is full of quality modern dishes, and without the grease. They also comped my tea since they charged me the wrong order, and it shows they truly care about their customers. I've been 3x now, all good food and experiences. Definitely returning! read more

Beef and Broccoli is now Beef and Broccolini. And it's delicious. So if you're feeling nostalgic but you don't want to eat awful non-SGV Chinese takeout. This is your place. Their delivery is "New York City fast." I order on Caviar and it usually comes in 20 minutes. That's insane. They are super nice... I once forgot to order rice with my meal on Caviar, and I called them up and they just threw it in for free (I am not advocating you do this as some sort of "hack"... I'm just pointing out how nice they are). G.O.A.T. Fortune Cookies... I don't know what they put in these things but they make all other fortune cookies taste like cardboard. I've been a chef for 23 years and have lived in Los Angeles for 5 years. This was arguably one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've ever had and for what we paid, probably the worst in this fair city. I'm not one to bash a place unless it is truly needed in hopes they make changes and/or to warn people to not go. In this case I have to say something and say it loud. If someone from Fat Dragon is reading these reviews I certainly hope they make some much needed changes. We ordered at the counter and when it came time to tip the percentages started at 15% and went up from there. For a self-order restaurant that simply had an employee drop off the plates to our numbered sign? Address this My group of 4 asked questions about the dishes and not one employee know all the ingredients to several dishes. To not know if something contains pork on your menu and 4 people need to go search out the truth shows a major lack of training. And with approx 15 items on your menu this is just inexcusable, especially for what you pay. Address this. Train your staff. Require them to learn the menu. Have the chef hand out "cheat sheets" with allergy info and full ingredients. If there is a language barrier have someone translate. There was a feature aka a special of the day that was "cold noodles" done similarly to their dragon noodles. My friend ordered it and she couldn't even eat it. It tasted like chrysanthemum lavender and Szechuan peppercorns. I had one bite and my mouth felt coated in super floral oils. No one at the table could eat this dish. Everything we ate was overpriced and after tasting all 4 dishes I give the food a shaky 2 out of a possible 10. I'd give it a 1 if not for the orange chicken being ok. If the prices were more in line and you didn't feel forced to tip like you would for full service I'd give the food aspect experience a 3. Then comes the journey to the bathroom.... I asked if they had one and the overly casual server said "give me a sec, it's kind of an ordeal". He then rushed me through the kitchen to the single bathroom in the restaurant. As I walked past tubs of raw chicken as well as cooked chicken without covers or labels present. Maybe there were labels but I couldn't see any. Cooks cutting chicken without gloves or aprons and wearing shorts. I'll add that one of these bins of cooked chicken was on a cart right next to the bathroom door. I can tell you as a professional that this should not be allowed and the only way they received an A for their health inspection is they were probably not prepping when they got the walk through and/or scrambled when the inspector arrived. Adjust your pricing and tipping percentages on your "Clover" touch system accordingly as they are both too high. Require your cooks to wear aprons and gloves as well as label, date and cover the food. When working with raw chicken take every precaution to avoid cross contamination and to clean as you go. Yellow cutting boards should be dedicated to raw chicken and raw chicken only. I'd say there is a good chance someone will get sick from eating at your establishment if they have not already. Your concept is good you just need to dial everything in I've mentioned as well as all the other reviews here. And sadly the home made fortune cookies had horribly dated jokes and quotes as well as terrible misspellings. The devil is in the details and I hope you can turn things around. read more

This was my second time having Chinese food from Fat Dragon; and I was really excited to have Fat Dragon's food with a bottle of wine and a movie. Two weeks ago, a friend was kind enough to buy us Chinese food for dinner, which I love but don't order very often because I haven't found a lot of great Chinese food restaurants on the eastside of LA. After scrolling through a selection of Chinese restaurants, we settled on Fat Dragon. And I have to tell you it was amazing! Five Stars! It took an hour for our food to arrive via Postmates; and we were fine with that. The best part is that the food arrived to my home hot, which is two miles from Fat Dragon in Atwater Village. We had the Orange Chicken, one of the fried rice dishes and the Beef with Broccolini. After our dinner and for days afterwards all I could think about was ordering from Fat Dragon, which brings me to the disappointing experience that was last night pickup order. (I'm highlighting that this was a pickup order because between the the time I place my order and picked up my order no more than 30 minutes elapsed. When I arrived my order was ready thanks to text message from Postmates. I order the Kung Pao Chicken and an order of egg rolls. When I got home and unpacked everything and began eating, the first thing I noticed was the temperature of my egg rolls, which were at best tepid. (Okay, that was a bummer; but as I told myself it happens and I could have popped them in the oven if I wanted them piping out.) But then when I got to my Kung Pao Chicken, it was the same experience. My Kung Pao chicken was barely warm, as was the two orders of white rice. Again, between the time I placed my order and picked up my food no more than 30 minutes elapsed because I didn't want to wait for Postmates to deliver. Anyone who orders Chinese Food knows that when it goes into a container it stays pretty hot for a while - at the very least 30 minutes. I really like Fat Dragon. However, if I spend $34.00 on a takeout order, my food needs to be hot. Period. Will I order from again, possibly maybe. The reality is that their food is good. But a miss on serving hot food is inexcusable, especially the number of choices that we have in LA. Other than this, I have zero complaints about the portions nor anything else. read more

And then there's trying to figure out how to tip at a place like this. So it's a self service restaurant but they want us to tip like it's full service? Hmm. We swiftly settled on the spicy wontons, walnut shrimp, green beans and the pan fried noodles. EVERYTHING WE HAD WAS UNDERWHELMING! I cannot stress this enough. The spicy wontons were the most disappointing. The wonton tasted old and was drenched in a sauce that was oily and tasteless, nevermind spicy. The walnut shrimp was greasy, bland and a rip off at $18. The green beans were past their prime and were soggy as opposed to crisp and crunchy. The pan fried noodles were deep fried and I swear they use the store bought kind because the texture was off and the noodles were stale. It came with this thick cornstarch sauce that was goopy and gross. I also had the chrysanthemum tea and it came in the form of a teabag in a paper cup. This from a self proclaimed "tea bar." Classy. The moral of the story is this: you can get the same kind of food from your corner Chinese spot for half the price. The food is no bueno. Absolutely the best Chinese restaurant (and yummy milk tea house) in L.A., but especially on the Eastside. Authentic, delicious, savory, spicy, fresh, colorful and vibrant! Super friendly staff!! Open, airy space with booth seating, and a few big communal tables. Order at the front & take a seat, food comes to you fresh & hot as it's made. The best part, aside from the ahhhmazing food, are the homemade fortune cookies filled with inspirational quotes that are printed in house.
