Being on their email notice list, I had my lightbulb go on learning about their reopening from shelter in place. Coincidentallyly, a photo of a tempting crispy fried chicken more than caught my attention, especially with the hot fried chicken trend in full bloom. My friend and I ordered for a late afternoon pickup on a Friday. I found a parking spot a couple doors down the block and walked up to the table at the doorway entrance. I told a young lady my name and she handed me my bags of food. Delivering my friend's order first, I plated my still warm food about ninety minutes later. I hadn't heard of this place before a friend suggested it for a double date. As I usually do, I scoped out the menu and it looked super yummy. The restaurant itself is off the beaten path from the hustle and bustle of upper 24th Street. It's super cozy in there. I liked the feel. They have a good menu with a variety of items. We started the meal with a variety of appetizers and they were all yummy. We had the seed bread, brussel sprouts, and sweet potatoes. For the main course I had the fried chicken. It was excellent. It came with mashed potatoes and a biscuit. Super good. They have a decent wine list too. Had a nice glass of wine which was a red blend. It had been a while since we had some dessert while out for dinner and we went for the brownie sundae. It was very yummy, I highly recommend it. Decor: normally I don't post much about the decor of a restaurant, but this place is pretty cool! The ceilings have these drapes down curtain like things, very rustic feel, and unique even for San Francisco. Food: Had a party of 7 which was easily accommodated with the reservation. We ordered the Japanese sweet potato, Mexican Street corn, rock shrimp with grits cake, firefly Gluten Free seed loaf with spread as appetizers. First, the best item by far is the Street Corn. It's incredible! Perfectly spiced and absolutely delicious Fresca sauce. I was the one who prompted to order it, which then sparked the entire table to order their own (comes in only two pieces FYI). They loved it and I loved it (5 of 5)! The rock shrimp with grits cake was the second best thing I had which isn't a let down from the corn. That grits cake and sauce was incredible!! Perfectly cooked. The shrimp was maybe the old let down by still a dish I would order again and again (5 of 5). The Japanese sweet potato is also a really excellent app! Crispy outside texture with a solid but not over powering spice! Small portion size, but still really good! (4 of 5) The bread loaf is also delicious! A small loaf with a unique spread. I had them add some butter to the side which gave it the comfort food level I wanted (4 of 5). As far as my actual meal goes I picked up the Fried Mary's Chicken. As I had seen on previous reviews and definitely felt myself, the side of mashed potatoes and gravy along with the Romano beans were subpar at best. The biscuit was okay, but not great. The breeding of the chicken was bland. The only thing that made it worth eating was the fact that they provided this unique green hot sauce (none of us had a clue it was hot sauce until I picked it up, dabbed my finger in it on my plate and realized it btw). The hot sauce is really good! Strong kick that lingers on for a bit and made the chicken way better. I only wish we knew that prior to digging in. (3 of 5 overall) Service: Good! They were attentive, only a couple of times did we look around for our server. The place was packed. (4 of 5) Price: it's on the higher side, but not too terrible I think our portion only ran us $45 with a shared bottle of wine with 7 people. Overall: I want to see if they update their menu and add more unique/better main courses prior to heading back in. So happy to have Firefly back for takeout! I've been really impressed with how well thought out everything is, from the vented packaging for the fried chicken so it doesn't get soggy, to the witty and informative instructions. We have ordered several times and have loved everything. One tip: you have to order early because some items do run out. A few of my favorite things: Daikon radish cakes- love the pungent sauce! Trout- we split this as a starter. I do recommend heating up the trout, and they leave it slightly undercooked (IMO) which enabled reheating without drying up. The lentils, veggies, and raisins with the trout make it very special. Non-alcoholic IPA! Yes there is such a thing and it's not bad! Kale salad- love this, it's always amazing (for kale). Vegan lasagna- where have you been all my life? Defines comfort food for the lactose intolerant. Chicken- really great leftover if you ordered too much other stuff. Seed bread- addictive stuff, also great leftover Bottom line- I love Firefly takeout. We order a variety and split everything. I always feel great after eating the food and I have awesome leftovers. I give this restaurant five stars for its ambiance, food quality, and staff. But enough of the fried chicken already!! As a regular customer, I appreciate that Firefly offers nice vegan dishes, which my friends who prefer vegan options absolutely love. However, as a solid meat eater, I find the menu increasingly limited. It used to feature fantastic options like short ribs, pork chops, and meatloaf, but now it mostly offers the same fried chicken option and focuses heavily on vegetarian and vegan dishes. Perhaps they should just become a permanent vegan restaurant and stop pretending? When I brought this up, a staff member explained it was due to the rising cost of meat? Last I checked, beef prices are quite high true, but price but pork is flat to slightly higher. Maybe do something else with chicken? Anything please! read more

I should start by saying I only write reviews if I had an extremely horrible experience or an incredible one. This was the latter. I had no plans for the night and strolled past this lovely place without any knowledge of this restaurant. I was walking my two dogs and saw a great outdoor setup so asked if they had availability which, lucky me - they did! The rest is history in terms of experience and service. The menu was filled with fresh, seasonal options and offered a menu with humor. It was the first time I'd seen a menu that made me laugh :) Every interaction with staff members was personable and so friendly. It's obvious Firefly cares about their staff and their guests. I'm so thankful to have stumbled across this gem and look forward to trying out all of their seasonal and delicious menus. This continues to be one of my favorite restaurants since I first tried it 8 years ago. The food is always consistently delicious and creative. I can never get sick of the seed loaf, sweet potato tostones, or daikon radish cakes. Also the soup (currently a curried roasted butternut squash) is absolutely divine. Firefly is an amazing restaurant! The vibe inside is adorable and romantic, and everyone who works there is polite and helpful. I love the parklet, too. I also love that they have fantastic non-alcoholic drink options, including NA wines and beer. They pair so nicely with the food! My dog is also obsessed with their treats. read more

Had a good experience at this restaurant . It's a small and cozy restaurant that has a pleasant ambience. My wife has Celiac, that's the main reason why we came here - they serve gluten free food. We had trout and sea food dish, and cauliflower flatbread as an appetizer. Flatbread was pretty good. But trout was the best. It was very tender surrounded by a delicious seed crust, served with rice noodles that were mixed with veggies and orange - full of flavor and texture. Wonderful place! My boyfriend reserved a dinner night for my birthday. Inside is not that big, but very cozy. The waitress was very kind to explain things on the menu. We ordered daikon radish cake (which was super good). My boyfriend ordered the pork chop, while I ordered the yellow tail. I have to say that pork chop was very flavorful. Yellow tail had nice texture and the fish was cooked perfectly. I would come back her again. Parking near the area was not a problem. Sadly was too full from devouring every last bite of our appetizers and main dishes to try dessert, but the options all sounded so delicious - next time I want to try the brownie with corn flake crumble for sure. This place was described to me as eclectic. Honestly, I had a hard time finding something that sounded good on the menu other than the fried chicken that my husband ordered. I ordered an heirloom and melon salad that seemed hard to mess up, except they soaked the melon in ginger and ruined a perfectly delicious melon. I also ordered the fried green tomatoes and it came with creamed corn (delicious) and black beans that didn't go with it. Maybe it was a bad menu week, but I was disappointed. If you're seated outside, they do have heaters. The last time we were there, they also started offering blankets. My roommate wanted to eat in Noe Valley, and Firefily popped up first on my Yelp search. I promptly made a reservation as I've seen in the reviews that one is needed. We got there about 1.5 hrs before the reservation. Though the place was empty, they were full of reservations, so we were seated at the bar. The place quickly filled up afterwards. We ordered the Japanese sweet potatoes with duck sauce to share, and we each got our own fried chicken. Those sweet potatoes and homemade duck sauce were delicious! I could eat a whole bag of them. The fried chicken was good, and I especially liked the cole slaw. I don't like it when cole slaw is packed full of mayo. This one had a light dressing. The biscuit was so soft and fluffy, and really good with the butter and honey that comes on the side. I also got a pinot noir from Oregon. So good!! I wish I wrote the name down to get a bottle of my own. I don't know the exact term for the dessert I ordered, but it's like a tart. It came with seasonal fruits and ice cream. It was delicious! The bartender was very helpful and enthusiastic about the dishes. I really appreciate that! I usually don't have any questions when I order, but it's nice to know that there was someone who is happy to help. Since it is Noe Valley and dinner service, prices are high. I usually don't have a budget when dining out, but I certainly wasn't expecting to put down $60. This restaurant is the type of place where you slowly enjoy food, wine, and company. Firefly is my favorite restaurant! This is no exaggeration of words, but truly is my first pick for any celebration experience or just appetizers. I will start with noting the incredibly creative and fabulous combinations of ingredients in every dish. The menu changes to incorporate many seasonal ingredients. That is a beautiful thing about Firefly as you can dine there often and be surprised. The surprise can be wonderful, but the offerings that remain all the time mean you can be dreaming of the gift your taste buds will have as you wait for your reservation date and time. The ambiance is cozy, with calm lighting and soothing colors. This allows for the people at your table to focus on exactly that - the people at your table. You may choose to dine in or at the parklet. The outside area provide barriers in between some tables so I never feel crowded nor hear others at parklet tables. The heating lamps have allowed me to be there comfortably even when it was 42 degrees. Lastly, the entire Firefly team is most unusual! Everyone that a dining customer would engage with truly enjoys their work. It is a community that has a passion for food, environment, sustainability, food combinations and/or other related interests. It says so much when you dine at a place where everyone is interested in what is being served...and they have tasted it. This encourages enthusiastic conversation leading from any questions you may have about the menu. Overall, the food and the team make Firefly an option you absolutely will not regret. If your a foodie or just want to try something new, you will be delighted. I have been here many times in the last seven years and I have never had a disappointing experience. This staff member with short hair and glasses was very inappropriate. Very rude. Discriminative behavior. Atrocious. She uttered "Bye see you never" as they left. Very uncomfortable. Firefly has been in my bookmark for over a year. After many failed attempts, I finally dined here with 4 college girlfriends. Service: 4 stars Our reservations was at 8pm. We got to the restaurant at 7:50pm and the table was already set up for us (+). Our server was super friendly and awesome (+). However, she had couple tables to cover so it was difficult to get her attention (-). But we were able to flag down another server a few times who was very happy to fulfill our requests (+). Atmosphere: 2 stars While the place has nice ambiance: dim lights and cozy atmosphere (+), there were just too many people for this small space (-). Our party of 5 was placed awkwardly in the middle of all the party of 2's and 4's (-). It was cramped and loud and we had a difficult time carrying on conversations (-). Food: 3 stars All 5 of us ordered the prefix dinner menu. Appetizer, entrée and dessert for $35 per person. Not a bad deal (+). I've been twice now, the reviews were so strong I felt I had to give it a double shot. While I can appreciate why Firefly is a favorite for those who live in the neighborhood, I caution my fellow city nomads from letting their expectations run wild. I had the tempura string beans to start and the grilled yellow tail on a bed of soba. Both were good, but neither was particularly remarkable. Ingredients are garden fresh and dishes tend to be simple which allows the components to shine, but also limits the complexity. Service is excellent and everyone from the hostess to the waitresses offered friendly smiles and nice laid back vibe. I'm sure it's a relaxing spot for locals and if you happen to be in Noe it's a decent dining option. read more

At this perfect unpretentious Noe Valley neighborhood restaurant with pleasant service and quality food, you don't want to miss their $34 pre-fixe course offered (Sun-Thur), which is quite reasonable when you consider the quality of ingredients they use and no restrictions on which items you choose. I really enjoyed their pork chop dish. The quality meat with corn on the top, sauce, and grits blended to an amazing harmony. Their ahi mahi dish was nicely done with slightly rare finish in the center. Both the pork and fish dishes were seasoned just right, not too strongly flavored. Their signature appetizer, pot stickers, was also very nice. Finishing the meal off with their "Twinky" was awesome. Their service was very friendly and attentive. Silverware was replaced and the guy cleared the crumbs from the table after each course --- all which I didn't expect from a casual restaurant. Note that the restaurant was packed on a Monday night, so I highly recommend going here with a reservation. If the prices were tad cheaper, I could come here more often. read more
