Who knew such a cool place was right around the corner from my house. Christmas day... nothing open for breakfast. I looked from West Adams district to Sunset Strip and beyond... But Flipper's was open! The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Saf, the host, found us a great seat and Sabrina, our waitress was just as smiling and helpful as can be. Even the customers seem to be interacting lovingly with one another... maybe that's just Christmas BUT... I will be back. This place is high on my favorite neighborhood breakfast spots! It is also worth noting that a keen and creative eye for design went into this lovely breakfast/brunch spot. Everything looked great, the seating, the menu, the kitchen - and the yellow theme was well thought out and inviting. The menu is a blend of Japanese/American brunch. If you ever run across a souffle pancake, it started in Japan. I was torn between trying out the souffle pancakes but ultimately settled on their brunch burrito (breakfast burrito). One of my food kryptonites is a hearty breakfast burrito. And wow, was this one spectacular! It was stuffed to the very limits of the tortilla and packed with flavor. Everything was cooked expertly. I had to slow myself down and savor it because as soon as I took my first bite, I was ready to scarf the entire thing. It came with three sauces that I forgot to ask what they are. One was a fancy ketchup and all three were excellent. It came with a side and I chose truffle fries. Their truffle fries were well balanced. The server was great. Very friendly guy who talked me through my burrito versus pancake dilemma. I'm glad he encouraged me to try the burrito. It was awesome. They have a small parking lot they share with a few other businesses but honestly, street parking in this area of Fairfax shouldn't be a problem. Came here a few times for brunch. Came around 10am on a Sunday and we were seated right away. I recommend joining the waitlist on Yelp. The soufflé pancakes are definitely the highlight of the meal. I really enjoyed the fluffy pancakes with the fresh berries, whipped cream and maple syrup. It was the perfect combination. I also tried the breakfast burrito with a side of truffle fries which was delicious as well. However the pancakes are by far my favorite part about coming to this place. The parking lot is small, but there is also street parking & while it's on Fairfax, it's not the ridiculously busy part. I was on a walk last friday and passed flippers. I went back with my wife early sunday morning. The food was excellent. The pancakes with maple cream and the crispy side of bacon were unbelievable. The avocado toast was pretty filling and I liked the fries that came with it. For our sweet treat, we got the strawberry banana pancake and it was a perfect cloud to eat. It was tasty and novel. I ordered the chicken/waffles. Chicken was seasoned/fried to perfection. It was moist and crispy. The waffles were just waffles to me. Not spectacular or bad, but they served it with a toffee maple syrup and side of strawberry butter that were both delicious. Lots of unique flavor combinations to try here. My wife and I came to have breakfast based on the reviews on Yelp. I ordered the eggs benedict with smoked salmon and she ordered the chicken and waffles. The eggs benedict came with a small order of truffle fries. I normally really enjoy truffle fries, and these were good, but I didn't think they paired well as a breakfast side, I would have preferred breakfast potatoes or hash browns. The eggs benedict and salmon were good, but the bread they sat on tasted as the same batter used for the waffles, slightly sweet, good but I would have preferred a more savory bread. As for the chicken and waffles, the chicken was slightly dry and stringy and the waffles were flavorless. We asked for hot sauce for the chicken and all they had was tabasco and Cholula. We are huge fans of chicken and waffles, and at a minimum you need Frank's Red Hot or Red Rooster, which they didn't have which would have helped this meal. A seriously good breakfast option specializing in soufflé pancakes in the Fairfax District. Flipper's opened a few months ago so I have been tracking it and planning to go since hearing about the opening, and finally got a chance to this weekend. We came for brunch on Saturday and were able to find metered street parking a block away. They have a tiny parking lot, but it only has space for about 4 cars so you should just plan to do street or neighborhood parking. When we arrived the hostess was absent so we stood there for about 7-8 mins waiting to be seated, even though we were the only ones waiting. Then after being seated it took quite awhile for our waiter to come, and also took a long time after we finished our food to get the check. Our waiter was very polite but in general the service was very slow, however the food did arrive quickly. They have a lot of outside seating, but we chose to sit inside at the counter, which was nice because you're able to see the kitchen operate. They have a lot of great drink and food options here. Lots of unique drinks so I chose a Brown Sugar Milk Tea with Boba and it was a great and sweet start to the meal. For our food we ordered the Soufflé Pancakes, which were some of the best that we have had even though the idea of soufflé pancakes always tastes better than they do in reality, the Eggs Benedict which was just OK, I would have omitted all the arugula if I ordered it again, and the 2 Eggs Any Style, which was simple but very tasty. Also I have to give credit to how good their fries are, they come with all the entrees and are surprisingly good, I would highly recommend ordering a large portion of them. Overall it was a very good meal, even though it had slow service. That's to be expected at a new place so I didn't take off any stars for that.
