Super generous portions of fries decent burgers excellent soft serve great prices. I was telling a friend the other day how we sometimes pick up dinner from here after school. While we wait for our order, the kid usually gets a soft-serve and I get a glass of red wine and we chill on the sidewalk. I'm not a whino but hot damn, sometimes at the end of the day you just want to get your kid and have a pre-dinner red, you know? Anyway, there I am, waiting for our three burgers and one hefty portion of fries (for sharing) when there comes my friend down the sidewalk. And I'm like, "Hello! Yes. I am totally here on the sidewalk having my wine with my kid while I wait for my food just like I said sometimes happens." This is the spot if you're in the mood for a good chicago dog! We were super hungry and wanted something quick. The staff here were very polite and attentive. We both ordered their chicago dog which was sooo flavorful. They split the hot dog and stuffed it with all the necessary toppings and surprisingly it stayed together! Their prices were the lowest I have seen while eating anywhere in SF, much less a place that sits right in the heart of the Haight, with front row seats to watch everything happening. I've consumed over 20,000 burgers in my lifetime (general estimate), so if you're reading this, you can trust that I've had a range of quality and styles from different tiers of the burger industry. With my burger experience out of the way, let me go into my new favorite burger, Flippin Burger. Let's break down the burger (from top to bottom layer) with fries: - Top Bun: A bad bun can make or break a burger entirely. In this case, Flippin Burger bun is the standout of all the layers; it's golden, subtly buttery, with a just enough density and bite. Possibly the best bun I've ever eaten! - Lettuce: Fresh, crunchy with just enough coverage on the burger without overflowing. - Tomato: Similar to the lettuce, also fresh, juicy and cut nicely onto the burger so as not to dominate the layer ratios - Cheese: Though there are multiple cheese options I went with American, a classic standard for diner style burgers; it melted and fused perfectly with the produce above and meat below. - Meat: Well sized, well cooked, just enough char broil and a uniquely delicious flavor throughout. Similar to a burger bun, meat can be dull in burgers but Flippin Burger meat was top tier/memorable. -Bottom Bun: While often overshadowed by the rest of the upper contents, Flippin's bottom stood out; it's structure was densely fluffy, did not get soggy over the course of the eating and was crisped deliciously around it's circular perimeter. - Fries: Golden fry, perfectly cooked exterior with warm, potato on the inside. They are reimencist of a McDonalds style fry of a higher production quality. The staff really hooked it up with the Fries as a single serving was generous/massive (I hope this trend continues). Overall the burger ranks in my top 5 amongst some of the all time greats. I would like to eventually get around to trying the rest of the menu but it's been difficult to not order one of the greatest burgers I've ever eaten. In a city known for expensive dining pricing, the flavor and quality of Flippin Burger's burger and fries could easily exceed the current price (between around $6-7 if memory serves me). As someone who has grown tired of going to new age overpriced 'gourmet bistros' with uninspired, dull burger productions, the Flippin Burger experience was surreal and exciting. As of now, I've eaten there 4 times in the course of the past month and will continue to eat there at least once a week going forward. My wife and I had cheeseburgers and tater tots. They were just OK. The burger itself was a disappointment. The best part was the bread and fresh lettuce, tomato, etc.,, but the meat patty seemed to have come from a 'big box warehouse store'. This is only based on the staff, the interior and the one meal I had. 1. The staff are very pleasant. 2. The interior of the place was clean but the restrooms were out of order. I had the Chicago dog. It's eight bucks for a Chicago dog. It's been a few years since I've been to Chicago, but I can guarantee that it's not eight bucks for a decent hot dog in Chicago at any of the local mom and pop dog joints. But let's get to the dog...it was just terrible. I don't know whose dogs this joint is using but it's certainly not any of Vienna's dogs or even David Berg's or even anyone's dogs who tried to imitate either of those brands. The dog had an off taste that was unappetizing. And it was grilled. I've had Chicago char-dogs before, but this was just a lousy grilled dog, not really even charred. And the condiments...they substituted jalepeños for the sport peppers and there were WAY too many jalepeños. They just overwhelmed the taste of everything else. I had to take a bite of the dog separately to taste it. Also, even though the jalepeños overwhelmed everything else, there were a lot of condiments stuffed into the bun. Maybe they were there to hide the lousy taste of the dog. But there was so much of the condiments they were falling out of the bun. I had to go up to the counter and ask for a fork so that I could eat the condiments that fell out. And I wanted to wash my hands afterward because the condiments were spilling all over my hands, except the restrooms were out of order.... This was easily the absolute worst attempt at a Chicago dog or Chicago style dog I've ever had. They should just take it off the menu and replace it with something else. Hm, went here based on reviews and all and while the staff and location itself is pretty nice, the food was just decent to me. Nothing wrong with it at all but I wasn't wowed and love burgers and was excited to stop by here before going to Free Gold Watch. The burger was a single patty cheeseburger and I got onion rings too and the onion rings were pretty solid but the burger didn't wow me. It was just kinda there and wasn't juicy enough or packed with flavor. Used to be the case that Magnolia (across the street) was our go-to option for a burger... until the last time it cost over $50 for two burgers and fries (to-go, no drinks) and it pissed me off enough to swear off going back. "Burger Urge", the other option (now thankfully no more), was worse food - plus robbed its customers by hiding fat mandatory "service fees" on the bill. So... happy to see another Burger option appear in the hood; in short: $12 out the door for a burger with (add-on) cheese, bacon and fries.
