Fukagawa is located in the same plaza as Tokyo Central & Main, in a hidden corner with a large shared parking lot. If you are facing Tokyo Central, then Fukagawa would be in the right hand corner. I have been wanting to try Fukagawa because of their traditional Japanese breakfast, which they serve all day. So since my husband, our little girl dog and I happened to be shopping in this plaza, we decided to grab an early dinner here since my husband kind of skipped lunch and I had an early lunch. It just worked out perfectly that Fukagawa has an outdoor, dog friendly space that is covered but with glass ceilings, it will not give you shade from the sun during the day. We came here around 4:15 pm and sat at a table right outside. My husband went inside to let a server know that we would like to dine outside. That server brought out menus right away and asked if we would like any drinks, such as water to start. Then he came back right away with water for the 2 of us (I had a cup for our little girl so I just poured water in it for her). After looking over the menu, we ended up ordering: Breakfast Set C with grilled fish, $19.75 prior to tax- This breakfast set comes with steam rice, one egg (my husband requested sunny side up when asked how he would like his egg cooked), miso soup, fish (my husband picked mackerel) a side of cold tofu and pickled vegetables. I couldn't decide what I wanted, even though I wanted to try their breakfast, so my husband said he would order this and we could share. I liked the grilled mackerel and cold tofu. I think the amount of food was plenty for one person. My husband liked his food. Special Chicken Teriyaki Combo with Noodles, $24 prior to tax- I ended up deciding to go with a combination food that comes with 4 pieces of cut California roll, steamed rice, miso soup, salad, pickled vegetables and your choice of either udon or soba noodles. You can also pick hot or cold. I opted for hot soba noodles. The miso soup was perfectly seasoned and so was the hot soba noodles. Both really were just right for the cold early evening/ late afternoon we dined. The teriyaki chicken was more on the savory side. I thought it was okay but felt it was a little on the smokey side but my mom enjoyed it (I took some of the chicken and California roll home since this was a lot of food). ---------------------------------- (Total= $48.23 after tax, prior to tip) I really liked the food. Wait time for our food to be brought out to us was not too long and the portion size of each meal really is more than enough for one person, so I can understand why the prices are a bit high. Our server only came out once to offer us water but he never really came back to check up on us. Another lady, who brought out our meals did check up on us and was so nice to bring us hot water, She also gave us a refill after we had paid. My husband figured that since we were sitting outside that maybe this is why our server had forgotten about us. But they weren't really too busy inside... But anyway, I do like Fukagawa and would come back here again in the near future. Visited Fukugawa because my girlfriend and I wanted an authentic Japanese breakfast and had a great experience. As always your experience will vary, as many other reviews have stated negative food quality or service, but on my visit I experienced none of this. As I came on a Thursday morning on a weekday, there was no wait and plenty of seats. The servers were attentive and food came out pretty quickly. The interior of the restaurant is totally Japanese, with wood pillars and beams making it feel homey like a traditional Japanese home. Each day of the week has a different lunch special, and on Thursday that happened to be the Katsu and Udon set menu. Like traditional Japanese breakfast, there are many different small dishes and flavors that you can try. I especially liked the udon broth, as it was light to go with he heavy breaded katsu. Veggie-forward Ohitashi features beautifully boiled spinach, savory broth, bonito flakes for an extra layer of umami. Dashi Maki is a the classic dashi-soaked egg-spiral. Nasu Agedashi - love the fried eggplant. Zaru Soba has just the right texture, a good base for all the small plates, best with an order of Eringi Tempura, these juicy king mushrooms. Saba is the protein to my soba, a meaty mackerel, simply broiled to bring out the firm, fishy flavor. Mochi ice cream is what it is. Skip it in favor of the freshest Warabimochi, dusted with peanut or matcha. It's rare that a multi-page menu isn't a hit or miss - Fukagawa doesn't miss. I have been going to this place for a while and decided to not to go anymore. They hired a lot of young guys don't know how to serve the right way to customers. I was there this evening and this young guy asked me whether I wanna have cold or hot tea, so I told him I wanna hot, but it wasn't hot at all it's warm like a tap water. Overall, their food is predictably good and comforting, even the kid's set with gyoza and french fries! Came in for lunch with two friends. The place was only half full, but service was super slow. Our food didn't come out for almost an hour, and no one said a word about the delay. When it finally arrived, the server just dropped it off no apology or explanation. When we were ready to leave, we asked for the check. He brought it over but never came back to take our card. Lived in Gardena all my childhood. Moved to OC in 1979. I've never EVER been here! Luckily, I met a friend who was coming from Pasadena half way and she wanted Japanese food. You only get one chance to make a good first impression. After working all day outdoors and wanting a good meal for dinner, I came here tonight, New Year's Day. Most places were closed because of the holiday and I didn't want fast food or iHop - plus I heard that this place was good. Got here around 20 to 8:00pm. Added myself to the digital waitlist and took a seat outside since the waiting area had two people on the benches: 1 guy waiting for takeout and 1 young lady who got on the waitlist 30 seconds before me. A few minutes after getting on the wait list, I get a notification I was removed. I never had any notification in between being placed on the list and being removed. I went in to ask a waiter. Here's the dialogue: Me: "Hi. I got removed off the waitlist but never had any notification that my turn was up." I then show my text messages to him Waiter: "Oh. We are full inside and you'll have to wait a while until we get another table ... you can also sign up again on the waitlist. Unless you want to sit at a table outside." Me (noticing a table inside is being wiped down): "I'm fine with a table outside." Waiter: "We're short staffed in the kitchen. It's probably going to take a long time to get your food. You're going to be waiting a long time." Me (noticing the young lady ahead of me is seated at a table indoors with menu as well as a party of four now in the waiting area): "Oh. Okay. Um, I guess I'll come back another day." I left. The waiter could have been right in everything he told me but I find it suspicious that it looked like they were readying an indoor table for a larger party who came after me and they seated the young woman who got there literally seconds before me. This place hits the spot for really good Japanese brunch comfort food! We sat outside because we hand a really large party so we couldn't see how the inside looked. BUT the food was fantastic. I've been coming here for years and miss when they used to open at 9 or 10a and now it's open at 11 which gets close to lunch time for a lot of people during the week. This last time we visited it seemed like they had all new staff running the place unlike the years past where it's been consistently the same old ladies who ran the cashier and ran the front of the house. The dining area has an old-school vibe with all wood furniture and a tatami area, along with a little exhibit showing samples of Japanese woodworking. I'd say out of 90% of the times I've been here I've almost always gotten the same meal set which is the grilled salmon with a tiny side of grated radish, a sunny side egg to I later place on the bowl of rice, a block of tofu with green onions and some shave bonito flakes, pickled veggies, and a bowl of miso. So far this meal set hasn't really changed in flavor/consistency in the times I've been here. The only other options I think I've tried are their Udon meals (like the curry udon, which I recall enjoying), but I haven't had these in a while. The spainish mackerel was dry and again really lacking in portion size. The soba noodles were dry and the dipping broth super salty.
