GECR is located in the same busy area where Kozo Sushi and Tori Ton is across the street from the Old Stadium Park. Specifically, closest to the Young St. side of the parking lot. In general, I think the food here is pretty good, however, the honey walnut shrimp here is my favorite. In fact, better than most other places that I've been to. Big fat shrimps battered up and fried to perfection then mixed together in that creamy mayo crack coating! Whaaat?! Yum! That sweet and savory combo got it goin' on! The wontons were generously stuffed. The dip was kinda sweet but it's ok. Still a very delish dish! Minute Chicken - My hubby enjoyed it. You can taste that it was marinated in Oyster sauce. Very juicy and tender! Egg Soup - Pretty similar to the taste of almost all Chinese Restaurant's Egg Soup but I dont care.. I love a hot egg soup regardless of the weather. Honey Walnut Shrimp - All 4 dishes tasted great but for me, this is the most outstanding one! Yum yum yum! I;ve tasted many Honey Walnut Shrimp in the past (even Panda Express) but this one is spot-on! The shrimp was fresh, the batter was crispy, flavorful and glistening. Stopped at a seafood store close by for someone in our car and decided to check Yelp to find an Asian food restaurant as we were open for a few ideas- Chinese, Thai, Asian fusion, Japanese. We were parked next to this place so we checked the reviews and noticed good reviews so we decided to try it. They had lots of pictures all over the walls of all the dishes so we looked to the walls to help us decide what to order. Seemed like everything we wanted started with salt and pepper. We ordered salt and pepper shrimp, salt and pepper soft shell crab. Salt and pepper calamari & beef chow fun. All the food was great, fresh made to order so it came to the table straight from the kitchen hot and fresh. The only thing I would have preferred is the shrimp with no shell and deveined.( no picture of this dish). The Shrimp was the whole shrimp so it looked great but that extra crunch was too much for us. Beef chow fun is such a great dish full of flavor and texture. The calamari was topped with diced jalapeños giving an extra flavor punch to the dish. Soft shell crab were smaller than I expected but taste great. I've always driven past here without giving it much thought, but Frolic Hawaii posted an article about the "Best Crispy Gaugee" on the island, and Golden Eagle was at the top. I definitely had to try it. Of course, I didnt stop at the gaugee, we had to get all of the standard offerings, house fried rice, beef chow fun, ginger chicken, minute chicken, the list goes on. Each of their dishes was just as good as/better than the last. And although most local Chinese restaurants have similar looking menus/dishes, anyone who's serious about food will know that there is a MASSIVE difference in what you get between places. We got duck, orange chicken, chow mein, lap cheong fried rice, steamed fish, pork chop and hot & sour soup! The duck meat was big juicy and tender, the orange chicken was sweet and tangy, the chow mein was my favorite the pork chop was in big pieces crunchy on the outside and tender inside. I've come here a few times over many years and it's always been pretty good. In fact, my son always wanted to try frog legs and this place has them, and quite good I must say. I finally am doing a review after I was having a crazy craving for cake noodle and this place won the toss up. It is a standard Chinese food place with 1000 items to order and pictures of like 47 to identify what your ordering. The food is presented in a pretty fashion and the staff was very nice, but if I'm speaking honestly, it's just another Chinese food place with nothing really to brag about. I used to go there over 30 years ago with my boyfriend (back then) now my husband where I learned to eat some of my favorites even till today like beef chowfunn with black bean sauce and duck noodle. After seeing a Chinese film at a Yelp event a few nights ago, Kristine and I were sorely in the need for Chinese food! The restaurant is located in a small shopping center along King Street. Parking was almost impossible, but we eventually got a space. We were immediately greeted and told to sit anywhere, menus and water came quickly. Our waitress was super friendly and kept cracking jokes the whole meal. The selections are plentiful, all the standard fare and tons of specials, fixed meals, and combos. We ordered, I had the garlic shrimp and broccoli with rice special. Our food came out in only a few minutes, we were shocked but happy since we were so hungry. The quality was great, crisp fresh veggies, nice sized shrimp and nice sauce. It's not amazing food, but it's yummy. Prices are very reasonable. The restaurant has been here for decades, probably mostly unchanged. It's cozy with big booths and tables, plenty of places to eat especially since people can come and go so quickly. Restrooms are shared with the building. I was just curious on how good the food is after all these years so we were in the area and decided to dine there for lunch. My wife ordered the lunch plate for $8.99. I am not a fan of lunch plates but my wife really enjoyed hers. It came with a very good sweet sour pork, non fatty kau yuk, 2 decent crispy gau gee, white rice and a chicken chop suey that needed to be on noodles. She enjoyed everything except the chop suey. I ordered the harm ha pork with ung choi and I requested the harm ha slightly extra strong. My wife didn't appreciate the smell but I got a huge portion for about $12. It was delicious and I took the rest home where it provided me with 3 more meals. It is nice to go back to somewhere you haven't been in a while and find that the food is still good. This sesame chicken was superb- it was like eating chicken and waffles but without all the fork work. I was looking for something close by to have dinner. Only an hour before hitting tonight's entertainment plans wasn't much time. Looking at options close to home we settled on Golden Eagle. Knowing I would put in a review I timed several points. Got in a 5:00pm and noticed one other customer sitting on the far end on the big round table. Boss man was on the phone. He looked to see who came in the door, saw us, I guess that was his way of acknowledging us. Okay, understandable, bossman is on the phone. Finally approached and said to sit down anywhere. Two other people came in sitting on the big round table. While he was on the phone he acknowledged them and brought them water. We were still waiting for ours. Okay, now I'm feeling not good. Three minutes later, menu and water were brought over. I kept my cool and exchanged courtesies. We immediately saw what we wanted to eat. Mongolian beef for me and roast duck for my lady love. You know how it is at Chinese restaurants, it's always hard to get their attention. Another two people came in again sitting at the big round table, immediately menus and water brought over. Not once did bossman look at us to check what stage we were in. Then, he was back on the phone again. When the call was over, he came to take our order. Placed it and confirmed we did want rice. One of the reasons I came here reviews claimed dishes were brought out in 2 minutes. I believed it because I've been to other restaurants, Chinese too, where that happens. Why not here? It didn't. It took longer, 7 min. That's okay, that's acceptable. First thing out was the roast duck. My lady love did not like it said something is missing. I don't know what. It tasted fine to me but I wasn't impressed with it. It was tender and moist, not too salty. Wish the skin was crispier but sorta acceptable for me. It took another 5 minutes for the Mongolian beef to come out. By that time, the duck was almost gone. The beef had an orange color that I have not seen on Mongolian beef before. This color is what I see on orange chicken. It tasted sweet and slightly acidic. The meat was tender easy to eat. The overall taste is good but this is not Mongolian beef. Maybe it's just me being picky and having a different standard, but... the sauce is traditionally made with hoisin sauce and soy sauce, usually dark soy sauce, and red chili. Other items can be added to it but that's usually the base. If I was to go on taste alone this could be 5 stars. However, the duck being ordinary and the Mongolian being something else. At this point it is 2 stars but because the food did taste good I bumped it to 3 stars. What mainly brought it down for me is the service. If you're going to give preferential treatment at all give it to those you don't know well so they do feel special. No need to preach to your choir. In fact, your regulars are going to be more understanding if you ignore them a bit so let them wait. Hey, works for me. I may visit here again, maybe, but it will not be any time soon. To my surprise the food was good - not the best in Honolulu but good enough and the price was still a low $8.99 and considering the portions this was a good purchase. The only crispy gau gee that's bigger than Golden Eagle's is the famous Waimalu Chop Suey and nobody - I mean nobody get beat Waimalu Chop Suey crispy gau gee. A great surprise! This is a simple place with delicious food and substantial portions for a very reasonable price. The Pork Hash wrapped in Lettuce is amazing. A pile of sautéed pork and vegetables served with lettuce to be eaten like tacos. It was sooo tasty. Anybody trying keto or paleo should experience this treat. For that matter anyone who enjoys good pork should try it. Singapore Mai Fun is the Saturday special. A mountain of delicate noodles, stir fried with shrimp, pork, green peppers, onions, egg, and a light curry seasoning. Loved the flavors.
