This was always my go to spot whenever I wanted some comfort food. It's a little ways away from Berkeley campus, but if you can share an Uber with a friend or find your way by bus I'd say it's totally worth it. I would always get the Galbi Tang and save some for the next day given that their portions are quite generous (though to be fair, when I'm hungry I can finish the whole thing). Anyway, it's a place with great memories and a great place to gather with friends (whenever we're able to do that again!!). Came here the other day because my Korean friend was craving some Kong Sam, and apparently this is one of his favorite Korean restaurants. We (a party of four) decided to get the following: - Kimchi Pancake - 16 Soy Garlic Wings - Kong Sam First up for review is the banchan, of which I noticed that the banchan dishes were in a larger plate than I am used to seeing (much appreciated, since I love side dishes). In all, we received six side-dishes (kimchi, fish cake, broccoli, pickled carrots, pickled cucumbers, and bean sprouts). The fish cake, bean sprouts, broccoli, and kimchi were pretty typical to the types that I usually get at other Korean restaurants, but carrots and cucumbers tasted a bit sweeter than what I've had. The Kimchi pancake was nice and fluffy in the middle, and had a crispy slightly charred bottom. The pancake itself was large enough for all four of us to have satisfactory portions, which is a testament to the good portion sizes that my friend noted in his review. The soy garlic wings here were SO GOOD; not only were they large wings, but they were also SUPER CRISPY and the flavor of soy garlic was very prominent. They definitely do not skimp on the sauce (unlike some other establishments I've been to), as the entire bottom of the wing plate still had a large amount of sauce left after we had finished. Finally, on to the Kong Sam; this casserole dish was served in a large stone pot, and was filled to the brim with pork belly, bean sprouts, scallions, rice cakes in some house special sauce. This dish was meant to serve 2, but after the banchan, kimchi pancake, and soy garlic wings, there was just the right amount for the four of us (note that since it was meant for two, it only comes with two bowls of rice. We didn't mind this, but just thought it would be worth noting). This dish was nothing short of delicious, and I can see why my friend was craving this dish so much. One of my favorite part of the dish was the rice cake, which was very soft, compared to a lot of other rice cakes I've had. One thing to note is that is that you have the option to order fried rice to be made with the leftovers from the Kong Sam, which I can definitely see as being very delicious (will try next time), as the sauce at the bottom was quite flavorful (almost too much flavor, without some rice to even it out). Anyways, all in all, this was a great first experience, and I hope to be back to try more of their menu (especially their wraps, which also looked to be quite interesting)! read more

Hancook was great! New place on the block and a great addition for this neighborhood in terms of Korean food. We got the two person stone hot pot with Beef and it is definitely enough food for 2. The high point of the meal is on the quality of the beef. Their meat quality is very tender and the soup base is very flavorful, highly recommended. The waiter even made it a point to ask if we wanted more banchan (small side dishes), which is pretty rare at most Korean restaurants I've been to. Banchan: Fresh and tasty, was visiting with my grandma and she especially loved the pickled radishes Bulgogi kimbap & japchae lunch combo: Super large pieces of kimbap!! Great for sharing. Japchae was very flavorful; the meat was a little fatty for my taste but otherwise, we loved it. Gamjatang soup: One of the best Korean soups I've ever had~~~!!!! Pork meat (pork neck) was so tender!! The broth had just the right amount of flavor and spice, and was not too salty. They also conveniently provided a bowl specifically for bones. Kimchi fried rice: Again, one of the best kimchi FR I've ever had. For some reason, the flavor was just stronger and more tasty than at other places. Also loved that they add lots of seaweed. Panfried dumplings: How can something so simple still be so exceptionally good? Crispy, light, delicious. Apparently, the previous management was bad (?) but from my experience today, everything was amazing. Welp, I ate it all before I can take a photo. I ordered the Yook Geh Jang soup for delivery which is one of my cold night cravings. I honestly was a little worried about it arriving cold but I was wrong! It was piping hot even 20 minutes later. They were so quick preparing my order and so was the driver delivering. I appreciate that they make sure the meals go out very hot and they dont assume the customer has the privilege of warming the food... I definitely wouldn't be able to. It was a huge portion which they fit into one and a half containers, full of noodles, shredded meat, green onions, onions and super spicy like I like it! A little only too but I love it when the spicy oil is on my lips. They also included 5 Bachan sides and chopsticks, spoons and napkin for two which was much appreciated. SUMMARY: Yet another Korean restaurant added to my long list of suck-tastic Bay Area Korean restaurants. Some highlights, but mostly lows starting and ending with the customer service. BACKGROUND The wife's friend from NY came to visit a gaggle of people here in the South Bay as well as us. She took the BART from the Milpitas area to meet us at Rockridge. We knew she preferred Asian food and had Thai for lunch, so we decided to see what if there were any new Korean places. Hancook (which is a poor Romanization of hanguk or Korea) was the newest kid on the block with good reviews, so we decided to give it a go. THE VISIT From the get go, it was not a good experience. They have a sign up list and asked me to sign even though we were the only ones waiting. The list was a few pieces of paper and not even on a clipboard. There was no stand to write against. So every name on there looked like a bunch of chicken scratch on there. The lady waitress who spotted us then waved us over to (predictably) a table right by this huge party who were obnoxiously loud. Like slurring women encouraging other slurring people in their party to drink more. I said from a distance shaking my head "No" and pointed to a table on the other side of the restaurant. She put on this displeased face (big mistake) and pointed with the menu at the table. I shook my head and said "No". Finally I said "NO, IT'S TOO LOUD". This seemed to drive home the point that I wasn't going to have a meal where we had to shout over the other table so we could have a nice meal. She then became upset and then placed our menus on the table we were standing next to and walked off. So Hancook management: if you're reading this, instruct your waitress not to wear her emotions on her sleeve and if there are 5 other tables that are open and the guests want to sit at any of those tables, accommodate them. I was so damn steamed and was just about to take a breath and say "Let's go". But we were with my wife's guest and I didn't want to spoil the night, so I held back and we stayed. The waitress couldn't shake off her unpleasant face for the rest of the night, which showed her lack of professionalism. FOOD---be prepared to be nickle and dimed Bay area style We ordered their Kalbi and Naengmyun combo to share, the bossam plate, and a seafood pahjun (pancake) appetizer. The seafood pahjun was good. No discredit to that. There was a good amount of seafood and it was crispy golden brown with a good amount of seafood. A 5 in my book. The kalbi was a bit dry, but still good. The onions beneath it were good as well. The sides that came w/ the combo were listless however. Just not the kind of good taste I'm used to. The bossam was good, but here's what really pissed me off. The little basket of lettuce and veggies was so meager that really only less than half of the pork could be eaten with it. So we asked for another basket. And we were informed that that's an extra charge. Our guest said "Did she say there's an extra charge?" Yes, we were all in shock they'd give us so little to start with but charge us extra for a second basket. I politely said "Fine", but I was pissed. Add to the other things they charge is rice. The combo didn't even include one bowl of rice. Add to their level of cheap, petty nickle and dime approach was the fact that they bring out the banchan *with* the meal. Not before like 99% of the Korean restaurants out there, but *with* the meal. WTH. I cannot stand Korean restaurants that do this. They do this so that the risk of you ordering more banchan is lessened. Banchan in my book is meant to stimulate your taste buds for the main meal to come. BACK TO THE UNPROFESSIONAL SERVICE Not a single dish we were served that night was put on our table with a smile. In fact the appetizer was just dropped off with no pride or announcing what the dish was. She just turned as quickly as she dropped it off. Same too with the other dishes except for the combo which was delivered by another waitress who announced what we ordered and cheerfully dropped it off. Not once were we checked up on. Not once. When we got the check, no thank you. Just dropped off. RETURN VISIT? Nope. Not a chance. We'll let others know of our experience. read more

They also have a wide variety of soups and even offer their delicious 'Hancook Specialty' Korean stone hotpot. The stone hotpot is served with veggies and you get to pick your broth and 2 add-on meats. They only have a few options for broth and they're all pretty good but if it is your first time and cant decide you can't go wrong with the traditional. The stone hot pot for 2 is a lot of food and chances are you still be full afterwards but if you still have room to eat you can get a hot pot fried rice upon request. Very nice place and great service. Our waiters were very friendly and offered free pan-fried dumplings for checking in on Yelp! I enjoyed the food for the most part and the whole vibe of the restaurant design and food items seems very... "elevated" Korean cuisine. Not a bad thing, just seemed like they were trying a bit too hard to make everything fancy. My suggestion would be to focus more on the flavor of the food now that they've got the presentation down. My friend had the sundubu jjigae (tofu stew) and I ordered the yukgaejang (spicy beef soup). Both looked great but were lacking in flavor a bit. Loved the banchan though, tasted very fresh and flavorful. Very good overall and a spot that I think has great potential. Not sure why I'm just now putting up a review as I've been here a handful of times now but here it is! (Ok so I lied...you get 10% off your bill for a yelp review. ) Food - delicious. I've tried many dishes, all of which are good but the Gal Bi Tang and Galbi is my favorite here. They have lunch/dinner combos and happy hour is everyday from 5-7 (50% off all drinks and appetizers). Service - friendly and prompt. Unless the bubbly guy is working, he tends to get into the groove with the music, which is cute but you just have to get his attention. Doesn't bother me ‍ if you know, you know. Parking may be a bit difficult depending on the time. Theres 2 hour metered parking along the street. Sometimes I'll park in the lot across the street which I'm sure is for the K village restaurants but let's just keep that between us. I love that it's not overly busy (really just depends on the time), you can hold conversations with your company. Also, ladies.. you don't have to worry about smelling when you leave either. After completing a K-drama to which I dedicated 20 hours of my life that I will never get back, I was craving Korean food and found this spot that was still in its soft opening. I walked in and browsed the extensive menu, which seems to include almost every Korean dish I've ever had from BBQ to Soondubu to Budaejijae to Korean style shabu to chicken wings to bibimbap to ddeokbokki. On this warm day, I opted for the mool nyaengmyun or cold noodles. While I waited for the food to come out, I watched Kpop videos on the TV screen but was sad that they were only showing the videos but not playing the sound. Soon, the banchan came out and they were decent. The bowl of noodles I got was massive and was much more than I could eat. It had all of the usuals - meat, egg, and Korean pear, in an icy broth. I didn't love the shredded texture of the meat and would have preferred the more common slices of beef. As I ate more and more from the bowl, the sweetness of the broth became a bit overwhelming and I stopped before I finished. All in all, it was a good meal and a very authentic-feeling experience. Walked in for the first time and my first impression was the cleanliness of the Restaurant. There were so many tables that can accommodate a medium or large size party. The Staff Members have a sweet smile, greeted us and seated us right away. We came here for a Hot Pot thinking we would cook our own but how awesome the Stone Pot was already made and you can chose wether you want Beef, Pork, or Seafood for $15 each or you can chose good for 2 for $25.
