I found my new Hawaiian bbq spot! Hubby & I saw the bright green sign when we were driving by and decided to try it out the next weekend . We phoned ahead of time and ordered take-out (they offer delivery yet). The food is ready within 15 minutes or so, so fast! We ordered a little bit of everything, malasadas, bbq mix plate, chicken Katsu, spam masubi, hamburger steak, garlic shrimp, & a smoothie. My favorite was the chicken Katsu, very moist and crisp at the same time. Second favorite was the bbq mix plate, cooked perfect and great flavor. My hubby had the garlic shrimp though, and was not too impressed. We were comparing it to garlic shrimp we had at North Shore in Oahu, so maybe it didn't live up to that expectation. Whether you live in a big city or in the middle of suburbia, chances are, there's a local place that specializes in Hawaiian cuisine...and if you're not sure, I would suggest checking! Let's take a bite into, Hawaiian BBQ Express. The Place (3.5 out of 5) - Now, don't let the initial rating fool you. It's not that it's dirty or unkept, but more so just nothing really special about the space. If you've been to a typical Hawaiian, or fast Chinese, joint before, it's basically the same thing, same layout. Tables on the sides, menu up on the board to choose from, and a check out station for you to place your order. The Service (4 out of 5) - Again, nothing worth calling out, but not bad service by any means. The people I was able to interact with were very friendly and more than willing to help, especially if it's your first time visiting. This will eventually be a Tip in Yelp as well, but if a menu combination doesn't exist, they're more than willing to accommodate and make it happen. More on that in the upcoming section! Service was great overall, thanks for the hospitality! The Food (4 out of 5) - Ok, right off the bat, I may have come here two times in one week after my first visit. It's not that the flavors are amazing, which they are, but there's just something absolutely comforting about Hawaiian food and this place hits that on all levels. I was looking through their menu prior to visiting and I noticed that the combination of food that I would like to try didn't exist on the menu (Katsu and BBQ Beef). Not thinking much of it, I asked about this particular combination when I got to the register and they were MORE than accommodating in making that combination for me! Awesome! So, if there are two items that you'd like to try that don't exist as something on their menu, ask about it anyways and they should be able to get it going for you! First, the chicken katsu. I'm pretty particular when it comes to my chicken katsu. One, I'm not that big of a fan of dark meat, I usually prefer white, but I know katsu is few and far between when you find it made with white meat, especially with Hawaiian joints. Either way, the texture of the cook has ALWAYS been spot on the two times I've visited. The chicken was incredibly juice and the katsu was perfectly crispy providing that contrast that's always needed when trying to find that perfect bite. This was something I didn't mind ordering over and over again. Next, the BBQ Beef. The thing I appreciate about this dish, is that they usually stay on the side of using a leaner cut, meaning, there's hardly any fat on it, which is a win in my book. Is it 100% fat free? Absolutely not, but it's definitely not large fat chunks in the cuts. The flavor was soooooo goood. Comforting, tangy, sweet, and gave that perfect flavor profile when combining it with the rice and mac salad, which was refreshing in its own way! The only thing I have a critical take on is the brown sugar boba I also ordered. It was good, but there definitely was a lingering taste of jasmine, which can be off-putting for some folks. Wasn't disgusting by any means, but definitely a surprise. Overall (4 out of 5) - Like I said, there's just something absolutely comforting about Hawaiian food and this place is no exception. If you're in the mood for some good Island eats, with some good flavors, swing by this place and check them out, you won't be disappointed. Absolutely delicious! Had the half beef bbq and half chicken katsu combo which ran about 18$. It is a ton of food and filled me up. The beef bbq had amazing flavor and was very tender. The Katsu was perfectly fried. It came with mac salad and plenty of rice. The place was pumping out orders non stop, and I was impressed with how quickly they had my food ready (under 15 minutes)! Really like this place great customer service very friendly I've gone about 4 days in a row, today I was served raw chicken and the only thing offered to me was a refund after having to throw up for about 15 minutes and have my appetite ruined and that's the only reason I'm not giving a 5 star review. I will say that all the appetizers are great and the food was good all the prior times I went but I cannot see past serving raw meat and having had ate it. Really disappointed but it happens I guess. I stopped here for the first time today and ordered the chicken katsu curry. The good: Portions are large, the Mac salad was good and prices are reasonable. The bad: The chicken katsu was just ok but, only one scoop of rice and one little cup of curry??? I asked for extra curry and they charged me a dollar. It was super easy to order takeout from this place, they're also available on the food delivery apps. Quantity and execution were great! I loved the BBQ chicken, super tender but had the nice smokiness and grill marks on the outside. It's also easy to customize the plates. Generally plates come with white rice, macaroni salad, and steamed veggies. But if you wanted brown rice, or all veggies, or other combinations of sides they were able to do that. Omg! Love this place. It as brand new and they are killing it. !!! I grew up in Hawaii and this by far is the best food I have found here on the mainland.
