** TLDR: Nice dinner spot with good vibes, good eats. Some dishes a tad too salty / spicy. Seating may feel "low" but otherwise enjoyed every visit here. Adding Hengry to my regular list of restaurant rotations! ** - - - - - - I discovered Hengry by accident and stopped by with a friend who never had Chinese food. Naturally, we ordered a ton of staples (stir fried veggies, Dragon-Style Chili wonton, potato appetizer, etc.) but of course had to get the House Fried Rice and Miao Sour Soup (Fish Fillet). The restaurant was packed when we walked in even at 7pm; thankfully, we were able to find a table for two within 20 minutes. Our server was very patient, and the iPad for ordering had Chinese and English. The atmosphere was very "loungey" and highly decorated - lightly lit to provide a more private / cozy atmosphere. The chairs were comfy, though at times too low for arms. We started with the Miao Sour Soup (Fish Fillet) which my friend devoured - and he hates fish! Needless to say, A+ for sweet and sour, not spicy at all. Our chilled potatoes were tasty, the perfect amount of flavor and crispy. The wontons? I generally pass on these, but they were GOOD. These are a tad on the spicier end, though I did enjoy the snow pea leaf. We had A-choy for veggies, and these were a classic, tasty staple that were flavored just right. The House Fried Rice... was very tasty but also a tad spicier than expected, sending my friend (who generally handles spice) into a barrage of coughs - definitely funny to witness. Paying was fairly straightforward, with tap as an option. Afterwards, the staff provided a coupon for a future visit, which I did revisit and try their Braised Pork Belly with Mustard Greens and Stir Fried beef. These were unfortunately both on the saltier end and weren't as tasty as the first visit.

Miao Sour Soup with Fish Fillet and Scallion Pancake

Took my parents here for dinner, which they were very skeptical about the place since the parking lot was at a motel. Not a very nice looking motel either haha. Walking inside the restaurant, its definitely way different than what you may expect. I actually like how the restaurant has a distinct 'hotel like' smell, not mainly like food. We ordered the Miao Sour Soup with Fish Fillet, Scallion Pancake, Fish Fragrant Shredded Pork, and this other Pork Belly dish. The customers here are also very diverse, a good amount of non-Asians, and more Chinese Chinese, so it does give it a authentic Chinese cuisine. So I never had this type of style before, so all the dishes to me were pretty sour. Everything was pretty interesting to try, but something i'm not quite used to? I think it's okay but maybe not for me haha. My mom actually really enjoyed the Miao Sour Soup, she enjoyed the soup a lot! The fish fillets were pretty soft. Scallion Pancake didn't taste too fried, which it actually tasted more flour-y? It was on the thicker batter side, but I feel like this could have been cooked longer. I think I may have enjoyed the shredded pork and the pork belly dish the most. Although, a lot of the dishes are verrryyy oily. Definitely makes you feel greasy after. Service was pretty good. The waiters here act quite elegant for just Chinese food. It's definitely an interesting spot to try!

I would've never found this hidden hole in a wall spot on my own, but my friends had a coupon so I was down to try & it's a bit of a mistake The spot is very cute. It's decorated like a lounge. Very hard to find, no signs on the back door. Service is good. Nothing wrong there. Best dishes for me were the eggs and the kung pao chicken. The shredded potatoes were flavored well, but very thick cut compared to home made. I usually love Szechuan cuisine and have it once a week, but this place was way too spicy for most of us and we all had . I had to call out of work the next day great if you like a challenge, but I definitely can't go back.

Love the name of this restaurant - if you are Hangry, come to Hengry! They serve up traditional Guizhou - Miao style cuisine, which is quite different than the "regular" Chinese food that one would associate with. For one, they specialize in Miao hot spicy soup, which contains the unique Guizhou-Miao pepper oil with a citrusy aroma. Leo (the owner) and his staff were welcoming and friendly throughout our dining experience. Leo was happy to explain the menu/dishes to us. You order on this tablet at the table; ours had a problem where after we submitted the order, it erased, prompting us to have to resubmit our orders. Other than this minor issue, our overall experience here was fantastic. The ambiance was eclectic, yet comforting. I didn't really get the art work around the walls of the restaurant, but it still worked. As for the food, don't judge - we ate like pigs ... 1. Twice-cooked Pork (5/5) Pork belly that's twice cooked meaning the pork is 1st boiled to tenderize the meat, followed by a 2nd cooking in a wok to make the edges crispy. Well it sure was cooked to perfect crisp and tenderness while giving off a pleasant spicy-roasted flavor. 2. House-fried rice (5/5) Seriously one of the best fried rices I've had. It's very fragrant and peppery, but not too salty. It contains pork-bacon, Chinese sausage, black beans, egg, and green onion. Pairs well with the salted duck dish 3. Salted Duck (5/5) Salt marinated duck that is then boiled/simmered in hot water and finally chilled to give it that dry-aged meat flavor, but yet tenderness and melt-in-your mouth skin. It paired perfectly with the housemate sweet-fermented spicy sauce. Also goes well with the house fried rice. 4. Sichuan Beef and Tripe (5/5) The beef and tripe were fresh and had a good smokey, sichuan pepper oil flavor. The added fresh cilatro and green onions added a refreshing herby kick. 5. Egg Foo Young (5/5) The name of this dish was a bit misleading because egg foo young usually means egg pancake omelette. This is actually steamed egg. The egg was steamed to perfection and it was not "eggy". It is served in light soy with sesame oil sauce and garnished with green onions. 6. Spicy Fish Mint Salad (4/5) Chinese lettuce with a dressing that seemed to be a combination of fish sauce, chili oil, mint, garlic and cilantro. When it first came out, it actually smelled like marijuana (skunk smell), but that quickly dissipated and then you just smell the pleasant aroma of sesame oil. It's kind of a weird dish, but in my opinion, it's unique and still quite enjoyable. Overall, it's light, refreshing, and minty. 7. Miao Sour Soup with lamb (5/5) The lamb was not too gamey, but it was a bit tough, mainly because it's been cooking in the hot pot. Unlike beef, lamb meat gets tougher the longer it cooks. Fortunately, it is sliced very thin, so it is still relatively easy to eat. The soup base was one-of-a-kind amazing made from crushing Miao peppers. It's very citrusy, tangy, and surprisingly, not too spicy despite the intense visual redness of it. The chili oil broth is the good fragrant - aromatic spicy, not just pure heat. This chili oil is unique in that it has a lemongrass flavor that gives the soup flavor that's reminiscent of tom yum. 8. Fried Stuffed Eggplant with Shrimp Paste (4.5/5) Never thought egg plant and shrimp paste would ever go together, but they made it work. The egg plant batter was fried to a perfect crisp and you can taste the batter dough flavor, which I personally like. My bestie said "it's almost like eating a cookie with shrimp inside" - lol. The house-made sweet-tangy sauce paired well reminding me a bit of eating sweet and sour fried fish fillet. 9. Stir-fried Kidney and Liver with Pickled Chili (5/5) Personally, I am not a fan of eating organ meats, but my bestie who does, said it was "good-quality, fresh kidney and liver. The sauce was gingery and spicy." Pairs well with the house fried rice 10. Fried Tofu Balls (5/5) Each order comes with 4 tofu balls. The tofu balls were lightly fried on the outside to a nice crisp, while the inside was tofuie and spongelike to absorb the heavenly spicy-tangy, cilantro-y, sesame oil sauce that came on the side. A+++ dining experience. We'll be coming back to try out more dishes.

Yes! It really is all that! Ambiance, service and food all 5 stars! The ambiance is really cool, I don't know how to describe it. Funky art, and modernist sofas and chairs to sit on. Very nice vibe! The owner recommended we try the fish soup - it's native to his home region. It was fantastic! Of all the dishes we had, this one really met the portion size for family style well. Everything else was delicious. Fried rice, scallion pancake, king pao chicken, and I can't remember the rest but it was all really good! And he was very informative, the service attentive, Friendly but not over bearing. We were there past close and never felt rushed. Group of 5, we each ordered an item, plus we had an appetizer and a few sodas. $134. Not bad for a place this memorable!

Tucked next to a hotel in Alhambra is a restaurant serving Guizhou / Miao style cuisine. I myself am not knowledgeable about this type of Chinese food but Leo provided excellent service and knowledge regarding it. If I'm remembering correctly, the regions distinct mountain peppers are pressed into an oil that provides (in my description) an intense almost citrusy flavor, as if Thai tom yum had a baby with Szechuan spice in a surprisingly refreshing yet hot and savory soup base. It results in an addictive flavor that I've honestly never had before! The decor and ambiance were fantastic as well and I appreciated the eclectic artworks strewn about the restaurant. Would definitely love to come back and try more regional specialties.

The owner (or partner) guy is very polite and friendly! He explained to me how the restaurant named Hengry as: Henry is hungry The only one waiter looks very busy doing the cleaning and dishes serving, but unfortunately he didn't pay attention to any customers needs or asking if we need anything as of a courtesy's working in such of a higher-end restaurant... 1) Miao Sour Soup-fish filet 特色鳕魚酸湯:4.5-star Fish flakes are fresh n tender. Soup offers a light touch of fermented Roman tomato mixing w/similar to lemongrass kinda flavors to brings out the soul of this food items. Sliced Lotus root, seaweed, bean sprouts and wood fungus. It's not so greasy nor rich, yet it's very satisfied! 2). Fish Mint Salad 涼拌魚腥草 4-star I wd give it 5-star if it's not so salty... Crunchy marinated Fish Mint in sesame oil, vinegary sauces is very refreshing. 3). Sautés Mixed mushroom 4-star Various mushrooms, Especially Velvet mushroom is so delish. Love it as the dish did not come in watery as of other places... it's simple yet full of flavors. 4) scallion pan cake 4-star Crispy fluffy delish, it's perfectly to pair with/the above dishes!

Went here to celebrate pre-Thanksgiving dinner with some friends and we had a blast! Glad that they were able to squeeze us in for about 1-1.5hrs before 7pm reservation. The restaurant itself is not your typical Chinese restaurant, in our opinion, the restaurant is pretty fancy and very decorated with a lot of arts. We ordered about 5 different dishes, and all of them are delicious although some of them are too spicy for me. However, according to my friends who like spicy food, they are good. They have parking structure at the back and plenty of space too.

I had been eyeing this place for a while and finally got to try it for lunch. There was plenty of seating and no wait when we arrived for lunch on Wednesday. You order everything with an iPad at your table. The service was fast and friendly. There's plenty of parking behind the restaurant next to the hotel including covered parking and an upper level. We ordered: Miao Sour Soup with Fish Fillets: Very uniquely flavored tomato-based soup with pieces of white fish, mushrooms, lotus root, bean sprouts, seaweed, scallions, and other vegetables. It had a very strong lemongrass flavor. It looks spicy but it was not at all, as I think the red is from tomatoes. I've never had this combination of flavors before so it was definitely worth trying. The soup is served in a large metal dish with a flame keeping it hot. It's probably enough to serve 4 or 5 people. Potato Pancakes: An appetizer with 3 small potato pancakes which were crispy outside and kind of like mashed potatoes inside. Good. Came with a little bit of cabbage and chili powder. Scallion Pancake: I had thought this would be a different take than the usual but it was pretty standard, not a lot of flavor. Stir-Fried Crispy Pork With Diced Potato: Fried diced potatoes with small fried pork bits, chilies, scallions, garlic and ginger. Mostly potatoes. Just slightly spicy. Overall, a unique restaurant to check out if you're interested in trying different kinds of Chinese food.

We ordered a sour fish soup but there were only two of us. Not a single regret as we finished it all. The flavoring was spot on and not too spicy or salty. Paired it with a pork belly with green mustard rice plate lunch special and we were very happy. Will return with more people. Food came out quickly!

Wholly hell this place is so good! It's a restaurant next to a motel with lots of free parking. The restaurant is beautiful and hip. Get the sour fish soup you won't regret it. They also have lunch specials every day of the week. We got the pork belly with mustard greens. Everything was amazing and the service is on point. Come here you won't regret it. Happy Yelping!

Hengry serves bold and vibrant flavors of Guizhou cuisine. It is located in the City of Alhambra. I was previously here for a dinner event. The food was so good. I wanted to return to offer my patronage and support. I arrived at Hengry 15 minutes prior to closing. I got lucky and was able to still place an order. Upon entry, no one was at the hostess stand. A minute or so later, a staff member walked by and I asked him if I could place an order to-go. He asked me to wait and then he went inside the kitchen. Another young gentleman came out to take my order. He was the owner, Leo. He was pleasant and nice. I got a total of 3 dishes as shown below. Wait time was about 15 minutes or so which wasn't too bad. 1. Chinese Lettuce in Sesame Oil - Hands down the BEST vegetable dish ever! Very fresh and crunchy. It has a slight spicy kick to it especially with all the red chili peppers. Great portions. MUST GET EVERY TIME! 2. Stir-Fried Mixed Mushrooms with Red Pepper - Delicious with lots of different types of mushrooms. Flavor was on point! Good portions. Another MUST GET EVERY TIME! 3. Twice Cooked Pork - This one was okay. The pork slices were a little bit tough IMHO. Flavor was good though. I probably won't get this one again. Ambiance is beautiful with all the creative wall artwork. They have different kinds of indoor seating such as loungers, chairs, and bar stools. Inside space is very comfortable and relaxing. Free parking is available behind this restaurant. They do share the parking lot with the hotel to the right of them. Do not park in the plaza that is to the left of them as your car may be towed. Please read the signs. Highly recommend Hengry! If you're up for a new and exciting fine dining experience that comes with a creative twist in Guizhou style, this place is for you!

Dan Dan noodles were okay and it felt like it was spicy peanut butter but still good, just not my favorite. But the pork dumplings (xiao long bao) was YUMMY. It really hit the spot when we grabbed one each and the warmth and taste was delicious. Definitely my favorite! Pork and crab dumplings were good too! I was just too full at that point to have more of it all. I'd say this place satisfied my hunger and I left there super full so I'll comeback again :)

The beef noodle soup was absolutely the highlight! I honestly wish we ordered three of these. We will absolutely be coming back. The service was really good. They had folks sweeping and cleaning the entire time, and whenever we needed somebody to help, they immediately came over. We also had a lot of questions about the menu, and they were super helpful there too.

Parking is not an issue as they are in a big plaza with a multi-level parking structure. We enjoyed everything we ordered. It's tasty and flavorful. Portions are generous. Ice Tea is free refill. Servers are friendly depending on who you get. Sometimes we had to really wave them down. Great place to come to after getting off the plane from a long trip. Love that they open late, too!

We ordered a few regular dinner items and everything came out hot, fresh, and in decent portions. The flavors were exactly what you'd expect from a HK café: simple, consistent, and satisfying without being overly fancy. It's a good spot for a casual, filling meal. The main reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the service attitude. There seemed to be some favoritism where Cantonese-speaking tables were helped ahead of others even though we arrived earlier. That part was frustrating and definitely affected the overall experience. Parking is shared in the lot, which can get a little tight depending on the time you go, but it's manageable. The bathrooms were also semi-clean, usable, but a little scary. Once we were finally helped, service was fine and things moved normally. Food is still good enough that I'd come back, but I do hope the service feels more fair and consistent next time.

The Peking duck lived up to the hype. I liked that they use pancakes instead of the buns, and building each bite with hoisin, green onion, cucumber, duck meat, and crispy skin gave a great mix of textures and flavors. The other dishes were solid too. The pea sprouts were fresh and loaded with garlicky flavor without being overpowering. The shrimp fried rice was probably one of the best value dishes we ordered at around $13 -- lots of shrimp mixed throughout and a great filler for the table. The honey walnut shrimp was unique because it came with melon, which added a refreshing touch. The shrimp itself was super crispy and I appreciated that it wasn't drowning in sauce or overly sweet. The French style beef was another standout -- packed with fresh peppers and the meat was incredibly tender. Overall, you really can't go wrong ordering here. Great spot if you're craving Peking duck and Chinese family-style dishes.

The sweet and sour pork was unfortunately a disaster. The pork was sliced paper-thin--so thin that it felt like I was mostly eating batter with barely any meat. I was also disappointed they took the sweet and sour fish off the menu because that dish was amazing a few months ago. The five-color noodles were light, clean, and refreshing. The pork elbow was delicious with a fun, tender texture. The fish maw soup was very good and comforting, though it could have used a little more seasoning. Other than that, it was delicious. The steamed sea bass with soy sauce was incredibly soft and fragrant--a definite must-order. The scallops with vermicelli noodles were another hit: fresh, clean flavors and perfectly cooked scallops. My only suggestion would be to cut the noodles, as they came in one big clump and were difficult to serve. We ordered the beef fried rice but were given lamb instead. It was a bit gamier than expected, but still tasty. The black fungus with tofu was also excellent--well seasoned and full of flavor. Overall, there were a few misses, but the Peking duck, sea bass, scallops, pork elbow, and black fungus with tofu made the meal worth coming back for.
