I'm a sucker for a legacy location that's survived through the decades and changed just enough to stay relevant without losing their charm. That's why I was excited to try Hungry Fox, which I've only just discovered despite living here for 39 years, and despite the fact that the HF has been open since the early 1940's. Unfortunately the experience wasn't quite what I'd hoped for, though there were definitely some bright spots. To begin, the exterior of this neighborhood coffee shop is a vibrant green that catches the eye in a very inviting way. Inside, the staff is as friendly as can be, offering a quick, lively greeting and seating me fast. I was seated at a booth on the long side of the venue, and you can tell that this area was originally occupied by an old-fashioned counter with stools. At some point, the counter was removed and replaced by booths and tables in order to increase seating capacity, but the service shelving that would have been hidden behind the counter is now completely visible, and a big stash of back-up dishes and cleaning supplies isn't the most appetizing environment for a meal. Additionally, the wood trim around the booths and the textured wallpaper have absorbed quite a bit of grease, and could really use a deep cleaning. I normally love the throwback nature of these old-school gems, but this one just seemed a tad too untended. As to the food, I opted for a diner classic: Corned Beef Hash with Eggs Over Medium, Home Fries and White Toast. The hash was the best of the components, seemingly made in-house and cooked to a nice crisp as I requested. The flavor was memorable, with unconventional seasonings that were a really nice surprise. The eggs, however, were a disappointment: cooked in too much oil that was probably too hot, the egg whites were "fried" to a crispness that made them tough, and if you look at the close-up photo you'll see the oil pooling on the eggs. I only ate one of them. Home fries were also cooked on a too-high heat, the skins getting burned without being truly crispy, and there was very little flavor despite the inclusion of onions and peppers. Toast was made too soon after my order and arrived cold. So, while I accept higher prices in our current economy, this really didn't feel like a breakfast plate worthy of its $20 price tag. In the end, the people here are nice, and I hate to not be supportive, but I don't know that I would return anytime soon. And with other similar legacy locations starting to close, it would be great if the owners here were able to step up their game at least a little bit to attract new folks like me and keep us coming in.
My friend and I decided to check out the Hungry Fox for brunch. I got there a little before her and put our names down. It was about a 15 minute wait on a busy Sunday afternoon, but I would say that 15 minute wait is not that bad. They have a parking lot with free parking, so that's very convenient but that space inside is quite intimate but it's a cute diner. The host and staff were all friendly but the service was a bit slow and not super attentive. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles and my friend ordered a chicken chillaquilles with a red sauce. The food in my opinion was underwhelming. I enjoyed my waffles and I appreciated the smaller pieces of chicken but, I felt like it lacked flavor. The chillaquilles also lacked flavor and felt a bit bland. It was disappointing because those two dishes are supposed to be their best selllers! They also forgot my Thai iced coffee and charged it to our bill, so I made sure to point it out to them before paying. Overall, I feel like this was an overhyped brunch place and I'm glad I gave it a try but, I would not recommend it.
We drove about 40 minutes to have brunch at the Hungry Fox. I think my husband came across a review on social media. There was a crowd outside waiting for a table. We probably waited 20-30 minutes to be called. Once seated we quickly got drinks & our food followed soon after. We were trying to have something different but the chilaquiles always suck us in. Overall it was a good experience, good food, fast service & lots of street parking. They do have a private parking lot but I'm sure it fills up fast. I tried Thai coffee for the first time, pretty yummy. The loco moco was unfortunately bland. I sprinkled pepper on it to give it a kick. Our chilaquiles came in red & green salsa, although we asked for green. Not a problem, my husband ate the red side & I ate the green. The steak was tender & perfectly medium rare. Try it out!
My husband surprised me by bringing me here for breakfast, "HES NOT ALLOWED TO WATCH ANY MORE TIK TOK VIDEOS !!!! Dry pancakes, dry scrambled eggs. My husband ordered steak chilaquiles that were also very simple for the price. We were both very disappointed. This place is overrated, food was below average, service was okay, ambience was not the best in my opinion.
I've been to the hungry Fox a couple of times. I have enjoyed every visit and meal here. As always, there was a bit of a wait but as soon as a table is available they don't waste any time and prepare it for the next party. Everyone who works here is welcoming and friendly! You can tell how much they care about their business and creating yummy meals for others. Once my mom and I sat down, our order was taken. The food came out in 15-20 minutes. My mom and I orders the eggs and bacon meal. The hashbrowns were a generous amount and just your plain hashbrowns. They are very generous with the bacon! I was only able to eat two strips and took the rest home. The bread with butter and their house made jam was delicious. The waffle was delicious. My mom usually isn't a fan of waffles but these won her over for their soft and delicious flavor! I love the waffles here, and two squares was more than enough to satisfy my craving! While eating my meal I noticed customers around me happy and enjoying their food. It's clear that The Hungry Fox is a gem in the San Fernando valley that creates homemade meals and a place for loved ones to come together. I will definitely be back. :)
Well I finally go to try this place and I have to say it didn't disappoint! This fine establishment is nestled on the busy street of Sherman way. It's got that diner American dinner charm when you walk in but with a Thai home feeling too. The people here who served me were great! They welcomed me and treated me like their own and with the other customers who were eating there too! They were also treated like they were regulars even though they probably were already and even if they weren't like myself, they treated all who walked in greatly! Their menu had some American staples and some of those staples had a Thai twist to them although I will say I only saw it briefly and so I'm not too sure but I can say with confidence they had Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee which I got the latter and with that I got the chilaquiles skirt steak with scrambled eggs. I want to say that if you're a fan of chilaquiles it is pretty good! You get a generous portion of the tasty chips under your eggs with some pickled onions your choice of the verde or rojo sauce for the chilaquiles in which I got both for it and it was the best ever so much flavor and I haven't even gotten to the skirt steak which not only was tender but so juicy and flavorful. I asked for it to be medium rare and it came out mostly medium-well but the tenderness and juiciness of the steak itself was just spectacular. I got the Thai iced coffee and I will say the taste is different because I'm used to drinking Thai iced tea but when drinking the coffee you can definitely tell the coffee had a special taste to it like it was very prominent in flavor! I liked it very much it was a different taste. I think this place is great and it makes sense as to why this place stood through the test of time. Great people, great service and great food! I definitely will come back and make myself a regular because this place is great! 5 of 5 stars for me!
Back in 2026 and this place never disappoints! Their menu looks updated to have spam kimchi fried rice and some other new items but we couldn't resist getting the oldies but goodies. Thai green tea: floral and sweet in the best way possible! Pam's loco moco: still seasoned perfectly with lots of garlic and peppercorns and just the right amount of fat. Country fried steak: their batter is seasoned perfectly and it tastes like a giant nugget and I mean that it's so delicious!! Service is always great here, best breakfast in town!
This place is so worth the hype and the wait! We waited about an hour before we were seated but once you're in, the servers are so nice and the food is amazing! The jasmine green tea is so good if you like a floral tea. I got the Thai sausage quesadilla and the biscoff pancake and both were delicious. The flavor of the Thai sausage was so unique, and not something I'd ever had. The first bite of the biscoff pancake was like heaven. My friend said that is the face of euphoria and it's true. I don't even care how many calories are in that thing. It's probably one of the best pancakes I've ever had. It's very very good. My friend got the skirt steak chilaquiles and he said that it was great portions and quality.
The Hungry Fox had to be my first review of the year!!! Our first time there and now we will be forever patrons! Staff was super friendly and the menu was vast - I was so excited to see options like spam, loco moco and white rice!!! The rice was cooked perfectly and was so good! It hit the spot on a rainy day, exploring North Hollywood. Thanks for a great start to 2026!!

On the daily, I would notice this cozy looking restaurant on my way to work. It catches your attention as you see customers going in and out of the green facade. I finally decided to give it a try as I had a little extra time before clocking in. Walking in, you'll notice that it's a nostalgic and classic American style restaurant. It's small and cozy, with plenty of seating. Customers fill up the booths by the entrance and by the front counter. You're greeted with a friendly, "Good morning!" and smile. I was shown to my seat right away. The waitress started me off with a cup of joe and some water. After examining the menu and the incredible amount of selections to chose from. I ultimately decided on their chicken and waffles. It's what they're known for according to the menu and the waitress. They say it's the second best chicken and waffles in town because "your mom makes the best one". Love it. The wait for the food was around 10 minutes even with the hustle of arriving and paying customers. My plate came with four crispy pieces and two deliciously soft Belgian waffles. The chicken was nicely breaded and had an enjoyable crisp to every bite while being staying juicy on the inside. Also, make sure you put some of that special sweet and spicy sauce on the chicken, it seals the deal! The waffles were so soft, it melted in your mouth! 1st time here and it was amazing. I was kind of skeptic at 1st but it ended up bein a good ass choice to come. Our server called "MAMA" was fantastic quick and on her sh!t lol. She busted her ass to make sure, from what I observed everyone in the diner was well taken care of. Any who I was recommended the chicken & waffles and it turned out amazing. Idk what type of batter they use but it's off the chain lol. I highly recommend when you hit the "HUNGRY FOX" you'll enjoy . Customer service was great and I really enjoyed there cooking. This has been on my bookmarks for awhile! Finally got to stop in with my siblings after an early morning RC plane launch. I imagined this place totally different! It's actually a nice, comfy little cafe with a friendly staff, funky decorations and great color scheme. The menu looks amazing with many options to satisfy just about any craving. Plus they have a breakfast special before 10:30 all that rocked. Our coffee was never empty. Breakfast came out quickly. Brother had the breakfast burrito. Looked amazing! I had waffle, eggs and sausage. The waffle was light and amazing! (Sausage was good but oddly thin). The place was clean. There was a good size parking lot. Comfy booth seating. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. I'm saying, yes this is a must! We'll be back! read more

I always use to frequent this place with my cousin and always was great food, but as some have said the service is slow, indeed it is. Anyways today I got a skirt steak with house fries and the steak was done to my liking always seems like it has some sort of sweetness to it as well. The parking is weird u enter on Sherman but exit on Varna street when I think it should be opposite around. Besides the small things I really enjoy coming here for the great tasty home style food they have. I'm tempting to taste their chicken and waffles but haven't seen many feedback about them so I'll wait (lol) Oh BTW I had ordered pickup which was faster than dining in for sure and it was hot fresh when I made it home. Sidenote: They are open 7am-3pm weekdays and on Saturday as well!!! And I believe Sunday as well same time read more

Hello "Outside". I've missed you! First time out to eat in months and first time here. I had a delicious breakfast here and their Florentine omelette and waffle truly hit the spot. "Takeout/Dine Outside only" was no problem at all as they had a cool shaded seating area set up. Friendly masked staff, safety partition inside, quick turn around on food if you order on the spot, sanitizer station outside near tables. I will return! read more

I've been ordering from here for the last 3 years, at least once a week. The food has always been great however within the past week the food quality and service has drastically took a turn for the worst. I always order the exact same thing via Yelp app. This past Monday however I go pick up my food, come back to my office and open it up. Low and behold, it's a completely different order. When I called the restaurant the young lady working the front informs me "that's how we make it when you order thru the app" I reply to her "no, I've been ordering the same thing for the last few years and this is the first time it is different, I wrote specially exactly what I'd like my order to be" she then tells me I should I have called to order my food. No apology, and I was in the wrong according to her. She made me feel like I did something wrong with no sort of "how can we fix it this or resolve it". Fast forward to today(like I said I've been ordering from here for a while and I won't let 1 bad apple ruin the batch for me); I called and placed my order and the lady that is usually working tells me why didn't you just order thru the app as usual and I explain to her what had happened. She apologized and everything was all good.....until I got back to my office. There was big pieces of egg shell all over my omelette. The potatoes were not cooked whatsoever, neither were the tomatoes the peppers AND the eggs. Almost everything was raw. Whomever is hiring the new staff is the one that needs to be fired. I did NOT expect for this spot to be at all what it was. It is half "hole in the wall Thai" and half "Mel's diner". It's a bit run down, a bit cluttered and not as clean as I prefer, but man am I glad I went! I had a craving for chicken and waffles and went straight to Yelp to find the BEST. The staff wear shirts that say "Second Best Chicken and Waffles". We asked who the best was and our darling little waitress said, "Well, they SAY Roscoe's is, so we will just be second best." Very cute. This place blew Roscoe's out of the water. Absolutely the best, most crispy waffles ever!! The chicken was so moist and crispy. It needed a little salt and pepper (but everything does to me), but served with a sweet chili sauce that played nicely with the sweet syrup on the waffle. We also ordered a side of their grilled biscuits and gravy. Absolutely delicious!!! Get them! My only REAL complaint is that the staff talk very loudly to each other in their native language. Almost yelling over your table and it is CONSTANT. We could barely talk to each other, right across from each other, because their conversation was so loud. It was not pleasant. I will absolutely go back!!! I'll just take wet wipes with me and ask to sit on the other side of the kitchen. :-) read more

We were in the area and the parking lot was full, which was a good sign it meant that a lot of people were eating there. There was a backup of GrubHub cars waiting to pick up their orders. We went in, and our name was third on the list, and yet we were seated within 5 minutes. The hostess and servers were very gracious and took our orders. Within 9 minutes, our food came out. First things first. The coffee was super hot and rich. It was absolutely amazing. Our food came out and it was so beautiful I had to take a picture. I've been on the keto diet for 4 years, but today was a special occasion. My chicken fried steak was cooked to perfection crispy on the edges and moist inside. My eggs were over medium, and there were no runny whites, but the yolks were perfectly runny. The home fries were crispy and steaming hot. I also got some sourdough toast. People are complaining that they only get one slice, but honestly, the food is so filling that you don't need a lot of toast. Their homemade peach preserves were also exquisite. We will be coming once a month for breakfast. We drove 23 miles to come to this place. We will be back! read more
Had been hearing about this place for years so decided to check out a Thai owned Van Nuys breakfast spot in known for their Chicken & Waffles. ======== LOCATION ======== On Sherman Way Blvd. in the Nomansland that is on the edge of Van Nuys, North Hollywood & Valley Village. It's right before you hit the murderers row of Thai restaurants along Sherman Way about a mile down the road. It's a very unassuming green "house" on a corner, which I'd driven by 100's of times and never actually noticed. The dining room is moderate sized and spirals around the corner spread throughout. ======== THE GRUB ======== ~ PEACH HOMEMADE JAM - Was on the table and absolutely amazing. Paired perfect with the waffle. (5/5) ~ PUMPKIN HOMEMADE JAM - I don't like pumpkin stuff but honestly this was amazing. Kinda like the best pumpkin pie filling ever. (5/5) ~ CHICKEN - Part of the Chicken & Waffles dish, which comes with 2 section waffle and 4 pieces of fried chicken. They advertise it as "the 2nd best chicken" (behind Roscoes Chicken n'Waffles) and honestly it was good. It came with 3 thighs and a drumstick. 3/4 were slightly smaller than normal but the chicken itself has a good fried skin and the meat was pretty good. (4/5) ~ WAFFLE - Part of the C&W order, it was pretty good but not amazing. Nowhere near Roscoes waffle, not crispy enough but it was a solid B. (4/5) ~ SAUSAGE - A Thai sausage which I thought would be like a small link... but it was a thin patty that reminded me of McDonalds Sausage Patty (in terms of taste) except way thinner. (4/5) ~ SCRAMBLED EGGS - Solid, nothing bad about em. (3/5) ~ HASHBROWNS - Underwhelming. Not crispy enough, no real flavor. (2/5) ~ THAI ICED TEA - Waaaay too sweet. Too much creamer. (2/5) ======= TOO TRY ======= ~ LEMONGRASS DRINK ~ PANCAKE(s) - Choc and banana filled ~ their NUTELLA & FRUIT toppings for $3.75 ============== FINAL THOUGHTS ============== Honestly the food wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to the hype. Additionally the prices were high for what you got so that is a small negative as well. I'd come back if someone else wanted to go but I've had better for cheaper. As a small positive, the service was very good despite how busy they were and our server was very gracious and attentive. Yea so it's a cute spot in Van Nuys off the busy boulevard but the waitress at the bar knew all her customers which is the sweetest thing. She makes everyone feel like family and like they belong. Coffee is yummy and hot . I'd go back if I'm the area! Serving of Bacon was abundant and my waffle was airy like I like it! read more

Truthfully I do not think so. It's a very old school type of place, which is its appeal. They gave by caught up on these times. Sorry. I do hope this was helpful.
