Here are the facts, you be the judge: - Made dinner reservation for wedding anniversary. Restaurant was not busy, 5 tables occupied. We got the smallest table which is good for 2 drinks and a couple of appetizers. Felt very crowded and rushed as the dishes arrived. - 20% service charge was added to tap, not recommended, but added in print for a party of 2! . . . with no acknowledgement of our anniversary noted in the reservation. - Sales tax was calculated on the total including service, this is legally proper since the service/gratuity was mandatory. As sales tax in Belmont is 9.75%, I could had paid almost 22% gratuity to the servers if only they had not made it mandatory. I sure hope our server who did the work got the 20%. Food was good, service was decent. It was a work night and our anniversary so I was not going to make anything of it while there, and just left disappointed. This is a nice neighborhood establishment for us, but I can think of many other alternatives in better locations for better service at 20%. read more

Five stars for Iberia. Safety first: We had the opportunity to take a cooking class at Iberia this past weekend. The class was for six of us (in a pod) for a birthday. It was just us, the owner Jose Luis, his wife and a member of his staff. No one else was inside. The restaurant is very clean and followed all the required safety protocols, including hand washing, sanitizing and wearing masks when cooking. The class was excellent. Jose Luis customized a menu that was a combination of tapas and paella after talking over the phone to understand what we liked and had previously tried at the restaurant. The cooking was fun and delicious. We tried various tapas while we cooked and drank sangria (and put our masks on in between). The meal: The food was delicious. We had two paellas: one meat and one seafood and several different tapas. All of it was great. We were the only ones in the dining room and had a nice, leisurely meal. Jose Luis brought out several outstanding desserts to finish the meal. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and experience. We will be ordering their takeout menu and specials soon! read more

Took my parents here for their birthdays and had a blast. The staff were super friendly and we got to meet the owner who recommended some restaurants for me and my gfs upcoming trip to Spain. First, the food was excellent! The surprise for me were the bacon wrapped dates stuffed with a little chorizo. Best combination of sweet and savory. We also had to try their house paella which was fantastic. Perfect balance of seafood, veggies and chicken. If you let the rice sit on the hot pan, it'll get crispy for a different texture. Lastly, we had to get some wine so we ordered a carafe of the red sangria which topped off our night. Highly recommend this place and we'll be back. The outside doesnt say much, but the menu does! This place reminds me of small town England gastro-pud sorta atmosphere. Just have a sit, a drink, some plates and times will fly ... Went here to celebrate a friends bday and was surprised at how empty it was - it could be because it was a weeknight? But I did notice people do order a lot of take out.... So - service was great but overall food was so so. Unfortunately I've had great Spanish Tapas in Vegas so I was comparing a bit - and I felt this place fell a bit short in flavor and quality. We ordered their Caesar salad which was pretty good - but I can't say I can remember anything outstanding about it... We started off with the Datiles endiablados which are dates: filled with chorizo and wrapped in bacon. It was good but the dates were SO SMALL... tried to cut one in half because we only got 4 for a party of 5 so two shared - and when she cut into it - the date was so small it only made it into one side. Had flavor but wasn't memorable as the other place we go to. We also got the Patatas bravas con allioli which is their spicy fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise. This was actually very good - lots of flavor and I can see why it's so popular there.. Warning - the more the "orange" the potato the spicier it is :) Different potato pieces had more of the spice on it than others... which was good for those who didn't like it too spicy. One of the dishes that we all liked was the Concha de Santiago which has the day-boat scallops sautéed with mushrooms, serrano ham, brandy, and velouté sauce. That was the most flavorful dish and all of us agreed the best dish we ordered. Tried the Uiso de pulpitos con judias which is navy beans and baby octopus braised with capers, tomatoes, olives and pimentó. This one had a bit of that "tang" because of the capers - 2 out of 5 of us liked it - the rest didn't care for the mushy baby octopus - was a bit off putting. I could've sworn we had something with artichokes too but can't remember the dish exactly - had mushrooms in it too... that was an EXCELLENT dish - lot's of flavor and I think everyone's favorite. We also tried their famous paella - the small was perfect for us - it had a lot of flavor (which I think was due to all the saffron-infused rice) that included tender chicken, pork and seafood. This dish was good but I felt was a bit "oily" for my liking. For dessert we got the Pistachio Sponge Cake, an ice cream dessert and unfortunately some kind of cake which escapes me now... The big difference from the way things go in Spain was that Iberia forces you to give a 20% tip regardless of party size and then they apply tax on top of the total with the tip. This charming restaurant is owned and operated wonderfully. Relocated from Menlo Park to blocks from the Belmont Caltrain delicious Catalan-style tapas including paella are served up. I have been coming here for over a decade (old location too) and the warmth of the service and great food are always a hit. If you have the time get the paella. Great little tapas place in Belmont. It has a really authentic and inviting atmosphere, the owner Jose really contributes to that because he is super friendly and personable. A really funny guy too, he has no shortage of jokes to tell , really good energy. Food was pretty damn good too, had some little empanadas in a sauce that was delish, some pork on a skewer that came with a smokey sauce to dip in which was also pretty damn good. They also have these chorizo stuffed bacon wrapped dates that are just fantastic, I think I ate 6 of them. Also had a sardine on a garlic toast that was all salty and just perfect. Gazpacho in a glass which was a tasty little treat as well. I have had the paella before and it's really damn good , just didn't have room this time with all the tapas we had. Only reason for not 5 stars was because they did not have the Cava we ordered which would have been a really nice start to our meal. I have had their croquetas there before which are dynamite and I really wanted them but they were not serving them. The Crianza I ordered was a touch flat (might have been opened the previous day) but the Oro de Castilla Verdejo we order was lights out, a really incredible Verdejo. I may give a low review because I do not care so much about service. I care more about the quality and taste of food. I am not a fan of of this restaurant so it might be because that I have an Asian stomach. But I have tried good French or American food at a much cheaper price. We booked on Valentine's day looking forward to the fancy/delicious food. The menu has an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert at 63$ each person. With tax and 20% automatic tip charge( which is annoying), it cost almost 90$ each person. We did not even order wine or other stuff. The food was disappointing and I did not like it so I left food for my husband to finish. I was still starving when the dessert was finished. Anyway, Spanish people might like it better. mostly nice experience at this great Spanish restaurant. there are some tapas/small plates, but we really wanted to try the paella so limited ourselves to one small plate of peppers and eggplant, which was excellent the Iberia Paella was really good, but I expected more spice. plenty big enough for two people to share, especially at lunch. we splurged and had flan for dessert and it was fantastic service was very good. the owner waited on us, it's that cozy of a place. one complaint and this is VERY annoying: they automatically add 20% to the bill as a service charge. this was never pointed out to us and I had even tried to write in a generous tip (slightly more than 20% btw) when I realized there wasn't a place on the receipt. this is a bad practice and although the food and service were great (4+ stars for sure), this practice lowers my rating and definitely influences whether I'll return. it's really a shame when restaurants are so short-sighted that they would prefer to risk losing a customer who will tip well, and more importantly, return and bring in new customers, only to guarantee a few dollars in tip revenue. maybe this practice has already backfired because the restaurant was at least 75% empty at lunch the day we were there it's really too bad because I work on the Peninsular 2 or 3 times a week and eat out for lunch every day (often dinner too) and was looking forward to returning read more

The food is so delicious and well presented. The Restaurant atmosphere feels like Spain. Classic feel with an artistic touch. Steak was very tender and the potatoes underneath get full meat juice and still remain crispy as well. Octopus with Chile drops is an interesting combination which made me forget all the others. Years ago, I went to the Menlo Park location, but this was my first time to the Belmont one. Parking on the side of the street the restaurant is on is trickier, but there was plenty of parking right across the street. The interior has a nice intimate feel, and it would be good for a date. Definitely do the food family style. For drinks, the paella came with a small glass of the tinto de verano (light, chilled, somewhat effervescent red), and we shared a bottle of Malbec to go with the food. We came on a Monday night, and it turns out it was paella Monday. You can get a small personal sized paella (with seafood and chicken) and a small glass of tinto de verano for $7, so we each got one. The flavor was good on the paella, but the rice was room temperature, which took away from it. Also, the pan is more of a serving vessel than a cooking one, so you don't get any crust. Still, it's a pretty good deal. We also shared - Espárragos a la plancha: grilled asparagus - served with an arbequina olive vinaigrette, but it was a little oily for me - Pulpo a la brasa: a pretty generous portion of grilled octopus with a bean and piquillo pepper salad - this was the most flavorful of the dishes - Guiso de pollo a la vasca: chicken thigh cooked in a onion, tomato and caper sauce with some patatas on the side While looking at the menu, I noticed their disclaimer: "prices do not include nineteen point nine five percent service charge and nine point two five percent sales tax." It's a little unusual to have automatic gratuity for all parties regardless of size, but service was friendly. In the end, it was about $40 per person all inclusive, which wasn't bad. read more

What a great dinner we had! We went a Thursday night for dinner at 5.30PM and that was a good idea, because the restaurant filled up pretty fast. We started with croquetas de jamón - ham and onion croquettes and Jambon iberico - Spanish ham for appetizers; then we shared a PAELLA TÍPICA small, serves one to three; and we had an expresso and chocolate and pistachio cake for me, and almond and orange cake for my wife, as dessert. Everything was very good but the paella was in a league of its own! The rice was cooked in some kind of seafood broth, and a little bit burned all around the plate, adding an extra crispy texture; the seafood used in the paella was one of the best cooked we had in the Bay Area! Prawns, clams and mussels look like they were cooked individually before being added to the dish, and were extremely fresh and juicy. Two stars for the food preparation and flavor. However, this place is over priced for the size of the servings. Their corkage is an outrageous $30 and then they add a service charge to the bill at 20% for two. I usually tip that much, but don't like that they automatically add it to the check. We paid $180 for four people with a paella and some average tapas (4) . No drinks ! I definitely not recommend this place if you want to have a real paella. I actually loved my experience here. I carefully studied the reviews to determine what I would get and what to expect and my experience was better than expected. We were seated right when we got there. Drinks came right way then the cuisine experience started. We had about ten dishes and they were all very good. Top picks: Bacon wrapped dates, Potato omelet and the Boar stew. Then dessert came - we got the tart, bread pudding and Pistachio dish. Unbelievably deliciously good. All in all great experience! I have no complaints with the service at all, and the food made a great dinner for two! My wife and I had driven by this place countless times and always wanted to try it, and last week finally had a chance to do so and overall, we had a really delicious meal and experience. I will be honest, I had a bit of anxiety after reading a bunch or reviews prior to going...Firstly, some of the replies by the owner to some of the poor reviews had me envisioning the Spanish tapas version of the soup nazi from Seinfeld. The second, was the comment regarding children, as we were celebrating family birthdays and I would be bringing our two toddlers. And lastly, as others have mentioned, is the automatic service charge of 19.5%. In the end, I thought it would be best to just try it for myself and make my own judgement and I'm very glad I did. The star of any restaurant of course should be the food, and Iberia Restaurant more than delivered on this front. We ordered a large paella and a handful of tapas to share. The paella was very much worth the wait and price. It didn't skimp on the ingredients--chockfull of seafood and flavor was on point, the texture of the rice was perfect. I thought it was interesting with the addition of pinto beans, not sure if that's standard issue, but we liked it. All of the other tapas we ordered were delicious with the pintxo de tortilla being a standout. We washed down all of the delicious food with their super tasty sangria. All of us left happy and full. Our kids did fine. I understand this is a touchy subject, but I swear, it's like people either don't realize they were once children themselves and/or had children of their own. I get that there is a time and place, but honestly, my feeling is that this is a local neighborhood restaurant not some high-end stuffy joint. It's certainly, not Applebee's or some burger joint, but like I said, time and place...Kids can read a room and can/will behave accordingly. Respect parents to make the call on how their kids will do. As for the owner's replies on Yelp, he's more than entitled to reply however he likes, I have no complaints! While the automatic service charge is unique, I didn't think it was too extortive given the service we received. Braised meat dishes are the bomb here, and our server/bartender Jaime was so sweet. Two of us arrived at 8pm on a Friday and there was a 15 minute wait for a table, so we ended up eating at the bar. Recommend making reservations on weekend nights to avoid this. The location is significantly smaller than their old Menlo Park place but I felt the food was better, or maybe we ordered more wisely. Bread service: ordered this based on Yelp reviews. The cheese balls are like Brazilian cheese balls and tasty; the other 3 selections of bread were fine but not memorable. Nice to have some bread to sop up the sauces of other dishes but can be skipped. 3/5 (would rate higher if we didn't have to pay $4.80 for it) Garlic shrimp (Gambas al ajillo): our least favorite dish of the evening. A small portion for almost $16. The shrimp were slightly overcooked and the sauce was just okay. 3/5 Bomba: two large potato balls, lovely crust, stuffed with tender meat. Wait a bit to eat it as it's super hot when arrives, but once it's cooled appropriately, very delicious. 5/5 Brandy braised pork shoulder (espalda de lechon): tender moist flavorful piece of pork served with lightly fried plantains. One of our two favorite dishes of the night. Highly recommended! 5/5 Braised wild boar stew (jabato mozarate): the other big winner of the night. A bit small portion for the price but big bold flavor. 5/5 Trotter stew with bacon and potatoes (Callos a la madrilena): Small tender pieces of pig feet. For only $6.75, you know you want it. 4/5 Grilled lamb chop with fava beans (costillita de cordero): perfectly cooked lamb but not as good as the other dishes 4/5 Orange almond cake: Finished off with dessert. Fine but wouldn't order again. 3/5 Overall it was a little pricey for the portion sizes but we left feeling happy and stuffed, so definitely will come again. Iberia is a Spanish restaurant in Belmont. We've heard their radio commercials and had a friend suggest this place. Finally got a chance to dine and found the food okay, but not great. Prices are not cheap. Service was automatically added to the bill. Having been around Spain, we know a little about Spanish food from different regions. They had only 1 waitress working that evening and she was overloaded. The main man sat in the bar watching TV.. We would spend 20% more and head to Bellota in SF instead. Picks: Sangria ($10.75) was good but pretty strong. PAELLA IBERIA small, serves one to three ($39.95) Iberia's award winning rendition of saffron-infused rice with chicken, pork and seafood was a healthy size and full of ingredients. Seafood included scallops and shrimp, not fish. jamón iberico de pata negra ($18.80) - country bread rubbed with tomato, topped with the iconic ham of the black hoofed Iberian pig. The toast was a bit burnt, but this was a nice dish showing off jamon. pisto manchego ($13.50) fron the land of Don Quijote: vegetable stew, cured pork belly (opt.) and poached egg (opt.) was suprisingly a good dish with some really well done pork. Not a big dish. Just OK: patatas bravas con allioli ($7.85) - spicy fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise were nice and lightly fried but too spicy and salty. If you get it, have them ease up on that. Would not reorder: gambas al ajillo ($19.85) pan-seared prawns with toasted garlic, pimentón and fino sherry was overwhelmed in its sauce. Even the small size was a very generous portion, and we got a couple of meals out of it. Even reheated, it was delicious. I'd also highly recommend the chorizo-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates. Get more than 4 or 5, otherwise, the kids will eat them all and you won't even get to taste one. All the tapas standards (like Patatas Bravas) are delicious, too. Had an awesome experience here on Jan 4th 2017. I was in the area looking for a nice lunch joint on yelp when i came across this gem. I was very curious what iberian cuisine is and since i like to try out all regional cuisines, i was game for it! Reached the place...it looks like a small house from outside.. but is very well setup inside. parking was on the street or you can park across the road in the train station parking. Entering, i was greeted by the owner himself - very fun person. The bar section had comfortable couches and bar stools for the bar table. The restaurant seating section had few quaint seatings for couples .. where we got seated. The bar is pretty well stocked.. you can look at my pictures to get a good look. after being seated, we got water and i asked for a drinks menu. they didnt have any, so the owner accompanied me to the bar..During our discussion I found out Iberia is a peninsula comprising of Spain and Portugal so i asked for a native Spanish or Portugese liqor.. they were out of the Port wine but had 2 Spanish brandies - Fundador and Pemartin! I tasted both.. each had a distinct flavor of its own.. highly recommend both.. but i chose Pemartin for that time. it felt like i was visiting family - just walk up to the bar, talk about the drinks, taste some.. get one poured for yourself.. For food, we ordered tortilla de patatas - it tasted like adding eggs to one of our Indian delicacies - aaloo paratha - wheat bread stuffed with potatoes. we also ordered the tartaleta de tomates - which was a delicious dish and as per our taste buds, felt better than the tortilla dish. we also ordered pork skewered and a chicken skewered dish - both of which are not on the online menu.. but they were both extremely delicious! the chicken skewer was out of this world delicious and juicy! We ended the lunch with a chocolate dessert with flamed glaze on top .. it was a 3 layered dessert... didn't like it much.. again, its not on the online menu so can't tell the name. Irrespective of the dessert, the food was awesome, the drink collection was good and i will definitely repeat! already recommended it to all my friends who work close by.. this is a place worth visiting for sure. First time here a few weeks ago on a Saturday evening. We have early dinner so we got a big table, on the right as soon as you walk in. Everyone here is extra polite and friendly. Lady that was taking our drinks orders really didn't know much about the drinks, or any cocktails, but as I said she was extremely polite, so we really didn't mind taking extra time explaining to her what we really wanted. The owner is fantastic, he will come and check up on you every 10,15 minutes, he has great stories and he is really entertaining. Paella is definitely the highlight of this place. We all loved it. It was only seafood, no other meat inside, and tasted fantastic. I will go back for paella any day! The other dishes are hit and miss. I have to admit I didn't like few of them at all, and some again tasted amazing. I think this is one of those places where you need to go a few times, try lots of dishes and stick to the ones you like. Or just go and have a paella, because, there is no mistake there!
