My partner and I decided to watch a movie in Vintage Village Theater in Coronado....we were a bit early so we decided to have dinner. We walked around the neighborhood...lots of options...so hard to decide. Until we saw this hole in a wall / mom and pop Itallian restaurant...we love to support the small businesses and home cooking...and did I mention that my partner is half Italian? We saw the word " home made pasta"....sweet!!!! We went inside and we were able to find a table right away ! ( it was a Friday night....how cool is that?) The waitress was super friendly and jolly. We ordered the house salad to start with and a side or garlic cheese bread. For the main , we ordered spaghetti with meat sauce and he ordered spaghetti with meatballs....and some red wine. The salad was basic. It's was good but nothing really special...the bread was disappointing...it was just a basic bread , soaked in butter , some garlic and mozzarella cheese..and just thorwed inside the oven. And here comes the main course...oh boy....uuhhhhhh...how should I describe it?.... Oh! Oh! ... I know! It was super soggy...it was almost like a paste like...try to use fork and twirl it...it won't work because it just broke into small pieces!!!I. It just disentigrates...boom!!!! The sauce was not good...it tasted so artificial...like it came from a can...or a box..not generous with the ground meat either. The noodles were a nightmare for me!!' You'd think spinach, capers, tomatoes, sauteed onions, and artichokes would scream flavor when tossed with olive oil and freshly made pasta. Think again. Garlic was the only flavor I tasted even after nibbling the spinach and artichokes (negligible amount) separately. Average portion, one slice of stale, naked bread on the side of the plate - $9.75. Island Pasta is a popular Coronado spot that draws tourists and locals. Am not sure why. Last night was my last visit. Ate at this restaurant after passing by it on the Fourth of July. Food was absolutely disgusting. Cesar salad was at room temperature, soggy, and had little flavor and little cheese. I couldn't even pick it up with a fork because of how soggy it was. Garlic bread came uncut. They said it was six slices but it came only sliced down the middle, we had to cut it on our own for the whole table worth of people. The garlic bread was soggy in the center as well. Pizza was super super thin and hard. It lacked any type of flavor and came to our table COLD. We ordered pasta and it was absolutely disgusting. The noodles were cold and a weird texture. The sauces were horrible with no flavor what so ever. Overall, it's expensive cafeteria food, honestly probably even worse than that. This was my go to spot to eat on Coronado...however, yesterday was my last time there. The food was ok, no complaints there. The waitress we had was another story. I ordered a pizza made as vegan as possible, very politely, no cheese or butter or egg anywhere if they can. She replied back with...and I'll quote as much as I can..."You don't eat meat, you don't eat cheese, no eggs...how do you exist?" The "How do you exist?" part is a direct quote. Great place for pasta and or salads with a nice wine selection. The bar seating is inviting for dinner by yourself. Good location, close to the Hotel del Coronado. If you went to the beach you can leave your car where it is and walk there, its almost at the corner of Orange and Loma Ave. Pasta and a good glass of wine, it's a winner. read more

the food is great, i ordered the rosemary chicken then decided to change and get mushroom ravioli and the waitress told me to stick with the chicken, she was right it was great, came with a side of pesto pasta, also great. so in conclusion: great. when we first sat down i didn't expect it to go well, she was quick with getting our drink orders but then we were the only ones in the place (it was like 3pm) and she was slow coming back for our food orders, but i guess it was nice that she wasn't hovering the other waiter was nice and attentive read more

We discovered Island Pasta about five years ago, while looking for something to eat before a Lamb's Players show. It is now one of my favorite places to go in San Diego. The pasta is made on sight, and has a great al dente quality that I really like. The sauces are also very fresh, and have unique textures which compliment the pasta -- my favorite is the two sauce choice, where we usually get marinara and olive oil with garlic. The pizzas are great as well -- lovely crust, no too greasy. We usually get a large plate of pasta and a margherita pizza, and it is more than enough to for two adults. The salads are great as well. In addition, this the only place in town that carries a wine called Benessare, from northern California -- they do a great, big, fat, sexy red Zinfindel , which is a great accompaniment to the food. If the Benesare is out, the other wines on the list are good too -- there are some very great boutique California wines, if that is this your thing. The other reason I really like this place is because we can sit inside, when it is just my hubby and I, or we can sit outside, when we bring the kids (ages 5 and 10). My kids like the pasta, as well as the bread (which, I believe, comes from Bread & Cie), and the people watching from the sidewalk. For starters, don't even begin to think that you are going to dine in an Italian restaurant here. With the exception that they do have hand made pasta, that's the closest resemblance to one. I asked for a side of sauteed spinach and received a microwaved small pile of dead greens. The sauces and the rest of the meal were equally horrible. On the other hand it is fairly inexpensive. The waiter was good and did apologize for the awful kitchen. The owner needs to pay his establishment a visit. Especially the kitchen. read more

This place was not good. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because our waitress provided good service and our food was hot. I ordered the half spaghetti half lasagne with meat sauce. My food came with marinara instead. The lasagne has a sourish taste to it. The sauce had no flavor and was loaded with mushrooms. This has to be the worst place in Coronado to go. We sat down for about 20 min until our waiter finally approached us, since we were waiting for so long we new what we wanted and ordered right away. I ordered to shrimp scampi, the fiancé order the half and half, lasagna and ravioli. 45 min later, our food came out. I know our waiter forgot to put our order in, because people who came in way after got their food before we did. The service was terrible, but the food was even worse. My pasta was still watery, such a shame. This restaurant has a prime location, and it's wasted on poor service and mediocre food. If you are looking to go here, proceed with caution. read more

Yum! The homemade, authentic pasta was incredible! The servings were large and hearty. The "specialty" pastas I believe automatically come in the "large plate" size. This place has a very narrow dining area. The whole area was cramped full of patrons that I felt as if my personal space was being invaded. Their menu was simple enough with a wide selection of italian dishes.Their pasta tastes somewhat authentic and slightly overloaded with garlic. They serve huge portions that even I couldnt finish. Awful. Don't waste your time or money here. First off, the waitress decided to make herself a snack by burning microwave popcorn right after we were seated. The smell lasted our entire meal. Then our lasagna was indelible. Aside from tasting like way too much salt, the sauce was also sour. Not a good combination. When we told our waitress, she said ,"well you're the first people EVER to complain about our lasagna." So I asked, have you tried it today? But she didn't respond. She just hastily cleared our plates and said she would only charge us half price for the lasagna that we had three bites of...one bite for each of us...because we wanted to be certain that something was wrong with the food before we complained. If it was based off the food alone...4 but because the hostess was very inflexible to accommodate a party of seven by pushing tables together, and was lacking in the personality department they lose a star. They did however push tables together for a party of 5 that arrived after us. So we then told them we would just sit at separate tables next to each other. I don't think I've ever rated any place 2 stars before...and I really wanted to like this place because it's really close to home, but after several tries over the years I must admit it's not good. The menu is very old, I understand you can keep a menu over the time if it's a classic, proven, well-loved menu. But I highly doubt if this is the case. It was difficult to find something I wanted to order. The pasta was fresh and OK, the sauces were just OK. The bread is also sub standard, the dough over worked and industrialized. But the pizzas are terrible....the crust is like taking Wonder Bread and making it into a pizza pie. That bad. The toppings were fresh, but the proportions were wrong, too much cheese on some pizzas and in the middle of the pizza and not enough other toppings, the edges were dried, the middle was gooey. Later the same day we went to Alexander's Pizza down the street for a team party and had much better pizzas. In fact, when we took leftovers home, no one in our family wanted the Island Pasta pizza, they vie for the Alexander's Pizza. I will toss out the Island Pasta pizza. The service was very bad. The waitress gave us the wrong drinks, then refills soda with tea. Did not give us condiments or sugar/sweetener for our drinks. Forgot things. Bread order came out after our meal arrived. Sorry. The location is very nice, close to the beach and the Hotel Del Coronado and a great place to people watch. read more

This is an ok pasta place. What's ideal is it's location and the fact that there is outdoor seating right on Orange Avenue, where you can soak up Coronado. While on the main drag of Orange Ave, right near Hotel Del, I was surprised the restaurant wasn't more crowded on a Friday night. I went hear with the boy and was enthralled with how friendly the staff was. In particular, when asking about the various wines, they were extraordinarily helpful and generous providing me and the boy with tasts. My wife and I grew up on the East Coast before we moved to LA in 1998. After we moved we'd tried a million different places for Italian food and yet we were still searching for a place we could call "our favorite Italian restaurant" here in Southern California. Island Pasta was the place we'd been looking for. The food is amazing and the people and the service were equally great.
