We were seated promptly and the service was good. The waiter took our order and brought our wine selections out right away. We both got burgers and they were cooked to order and very good. J Alexander's is a nice upscale restaurant that in its heyday was probably one of the top in the area. It's still a very nice place, has that old school look to it, where it hasn't really been updated but still looks nice. The service staff was all excellent. The prices are as expected for an upscale place, about $25-$50 per person, without drinks. They appear to have an extensive wine collection and quite a few alcoholic beverage choices. I usually drink water. The 12 oz prime rib was excellent, as were the sides. The baby back ribs not so good, they were barely room temperature, not cold, but not hot, stuck to the Bone and hard to pull off, and the in-house made BBQ sauce was very bland and tasteless. I do not recommend the baby back barbecue ribs at all. They took them back to the kitchen and threw them back on the grill to warm them up or in the microwave, I'm not sure because they were even more stuck to the Bone when they came back, and upon return I only had half a rack instead of a full rack so they had to bring me out another half rack order to make up for their mistake. I thought the mashed potatoes tasted fantastic, some of the best potatoes around. The slaw was okay, a bit dry, but I'm not a slaw person anyway. Presentation was excellent. In the meantime the other person had finished their meal before my meal was returned. So while I got to watch them eat and had nothing they then were able to watch me eat while they had nothing. None of the food was comped even though the mistakes were made, which was fine, I don't mind paying as I expect to everywhere I go. I should have known better to try the barbecue ribs at a place that doesn't specialize in them. I should have tried one of their steaks and I will be back to try a steak. The ambiance, the service, the layout, everything I thought was very nice. It was about $80 for the two of us for lunch with no drinks. read more

We have visited this location twice now. The first time was an anniversary dinner & despite splurging on high end menu items, the food was just mediocre. The only thing I really enjoyed was the artichoke appetizer. That appetizer is what made me go back for a second visit. Well actually I called to order the artichokes to go only to be informed that they don't take orders over the phone...you have to go to the bar area to place your order. Well that's super inconvenient. Normally the fact that I couldn't call my order in would deter me from even ordering but I really wanted that dang appetizer! We arrived at the restaurant around 5:30, they weren't very busy at all. We proceeded to sit down in the bar area & wait well over 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged. In fact, we were only greeted after a server walked right past us to help someone that had just sit down and I had to stank eye him. My friend had grilled salmon with wild rice spinach something.. she didn't realize it was like a salad so it's cold but very tasty. When we arrived they told us it was a 45-minute wait or we could chose to go to the bar area. We chose the bar area! We sat down and we were tended to very fast. The bar area was a little bit rowdy and little more crowded than we thought was allowed due to covid-19 but we dealt with it and kept our distance. The Mac n Cheese is a must! Since this a branch of J-Alexander we knew it was going to be legit. The jumbo shrimp is not on the normal J Alexander menu so we wanted to try that. It was hit for us. Although the breading on the shrimp was not our favorite but overall the shrimp were great. They were super jumbo in our opinion. They were enormous! Whenever we do go, I'm always impressed (and we eat at all the Tampa hot spots). Best Prime Rib, I think that we have had anywhere, but for sure at least in Tampa. The drinks are very high quality and I am very picky with my cocktails. We always like to sit at the bar (as we do anywhere) and the staff is on it and friendly. We especially like Megan- she anticipates what you what/need without even having to ask for the most part. Just a classic, go to if you're looking for traditional American food with great drinks and service. Found this steakhouse on yelp of course, and am completely glad that we visited. It is in a plaza (currently under construction) and it is not too difficult to find because they do have a big sign out on the street. They have a private parking lot next to the restaurant so parking is a breeze. The ambiance is absolutely classy and it can be a romantic place to take your significant other here, or if you just want to have a nice, quiet and upscale dinner. Now to the meat; we ordered the grilled chicken salad, the potato soup (of the day), and the roasted prime rib. The potato soup is also great, though a little on the saltier side. The grilled chicken salad was fabulous; generous chicken strip pieces coupled with lettuce, olives, and crunches piled on a small hill on the plate, it is one of the best tasting salad I've ever had. The prime rib was also superb; coupled with the dip sauce it almost melts in your mouth. The server was also great; attentive and understanding, he was able to make the steak more heated without any issues. And offered to box our leftovers without us even asking. Outstanding service and food! Worth every penny. This is the place to go for a great cut of prime rib and "smashed potatoes" on the side. Delectable cuts of meat melt in your mouth like butter. The salads are fresh and crispy, and the dressings are light and compliment the vegetables well. This is the kind of restaurant where you can ask for an off-menu condiment or side and they accommodate. Case in point: I wanted an unruly amount of fresh garlic to pair with my steak and they produced a salad dressing side dish (1-2 oz) worth of it on the side. It is now pouring from my pores and fighting the scourge of flu I've been surrounded by this week. The desserts are scrumptious, decadent, and are in need of additional spoons and friends. There was a manager practically jogging/checking thru everyone's dining experience with his head bobbing left to right at the tables, like a puppet. Again & again! It aggravated more than US & was/is a huge disruption to our dining experience! Why not stop & talk to patrons as other restaurants do? We spent almost $80 on bland, tasteless, small burgers? Both times I went with guests from out of town (party of 6 each visit). Pros: Nice location, good vibe inside (dim/low lighting) and a good menu that should fit everyone's tastes. Cons: Can't make a Martini to save their life. If I ever order a drink out, it's always a Cosmo Martini, always. So I know a good Cosmo. Both my visits the drinks were horrible. Not drinkable. Taste was off, color was off. I had them remade on both visits and horrible. I returned them and drank water. Food was.... Meh flavor wise. First visit I got the prime rib and second visit was a filet mignon. Both unfortunately totally flavorless. For the restaurant type & menu prices I'd expect a lot more out of their cocktails/bartending skills and food flavor. So disappointed, after spending hours at the Gasparilla parade, we were hungry and tired. I had the Steak Burger and it may have been one of the top 5 I've ever had however, like the 1844 House in Canton NY I need to confirm its consistentcy by having a second time. If I only had one word to describe this establishment it would be "bland". From the second we stepped foot in the door to when the server forgot to put our dessert in and everything in between. We walked in and approached the hostess stand. One hostess was on the phone and the other just stared at us. After a minute of just staring at the hostesses, the one on the phone asked how many it would be (while she still had the phone up to her ear). Once we were seated our server, Brittany greeted us. We ordered our entrees and then my friend asked the server if they do anything special for birthdays and the server barked back that "you don't get anything for free and we don't sing". That's great, we weren't asking if we got anything were free. We were simply asking if idk maybe you could put a candle in a piece of cake that we pay for or write happy birthday on the plate. I don't think that's a very hard request. This is where we immediately got turned off. We were celebrating my friend's son's 21st birthday and the server didn't even card him! Next, our drinks come out and the runner just put them down on the table, not asking who had what. My favorite part, that actually made me say "what the fuck". Was when said food runner brought our food out and goes "is no one sitting here?" We say "no, no one is sitting there" and he puts my entree at that seat instead of asking who had it! I think this place wants to be fancy but they don't even have seat numbers? I ordered the artichokes and the steak burger with mac n cheese. I LOVE roasted artichokes but these needed some flavor in it. I added some salt and pepper which made them a little better. The steak burger was pretty disappointing and tasted no better than a Checkers, McDonalds, etc. type of burger. The mac n cheese was my favorite part for sure. The server never checked back to see how our food was until we had finished. We ordered two chocolate cakes, only one came out BUT it did have a candle in it. We asked the food runner if another one was coming and she said "I don't know". We then had to ASK her to light the birthday candle. It was so bizarre. Again, the server did not check back until 10-15 minutes later when we informed her that one of our cakes were missing. This was a horrible, bizarre experience. I do not recommend celebrating any special occasion here. There are so many better places that actually care about making your experience a pleasant one. A long time favorite was sorely disappointing. Birthday reservation made, and sad to say it meant nothing. Was seated across from loud kids, we did ask to move. 15 minutes for a glass of water, a bit longer for drinks. Dirty silverware setup and steak temperatures mixed up. Somewhat inattentive service, not what we are use to. Spinach queso was good, drinks were very good, probably would have ordered a second if given the opportunity. Could have been a nice glass of wine if it had been served with the actual entree and not half way thru.
