This Reataurant is huge and when you enter, you will see the big open kitchen as they grill and cook. I have been to this establishment multiple times & it never ceases to amaze me. As always, the wait staff is pleasant & accommodating. I had a party of 8 & a high chair, I highly recommend reservations for big groups or busy nights otherwise you're looking at about an hour wait. I love that as soon as you walk in you can see the open kitchen& steaks on the grill. It's fun to watch& produces a delightful smell throughout the restaurant. Drinks: I wasn't drinking this particular evening but they did have top notch cocktails. The one pictured is a Tito's & cranberry. *sidenote-the beers(bottled) are served in a class, poured tableside. Food: I ordered the New York Strip, it typically comes with "Not Your Ordinary" mac & cheese however, I ordered the seasonal vegetable which was zucchini. The other steak pictured is the special of the day, a 16oz ribeye with a loaded mashed potato. For dessert I highly recommend the carrot cake. It is served slightly warm& is so good. I believe it's time for an update. I frequently come here after church and I must say I love never having to wait, unlike most places. Service is always prompt and efficient. Kristen was our server today and she was so sweet. Beautiful girl, that serves with grace. The apps and food always come out quickly, of course always delicious. I try and always leave room for the carrot cake dessert and coffee. Both are phenomenal and the perfect end to my meal. Im gladly looking forward to returning soon. read more

Always a good place to come to when you just want the most tender baby back ribs. Their open kitchen and charcoal grill are the prove that the food will not disappoint. It had been quite some time since I'd been to J. Alexander's and back then the Redlands Grill part of the name didn't even exist. The Saturday night I ventured in was quite popular as there were many people waiting for a table. Their menu consists of steaks, fish, and a variety of sandwiches/burgers served in a rather upscale atmosphere. The waitress tending to our section seemed to be hit or miss with zero personality. Initially she would come around asking if we were ready to order then would disappear for lengthy periods of time leaving our drinks empty and us waiting to order after having looked at the menu for an unforeseen amount of time. I ended up trying a nightly special which was Grilled Cajun Mahi Maji served with couscous. Overall the food was great, the service not so much. So this is the 3rd time we've been here. The best thing about this place is he ambience & the baked potato. It has this kind of swanky atmosphere that Smokey Bones wishes they had. Subdued lighting, & smooth jazz (not live) in the background. I had ribs & the cut of meat was great but the overall execution was just middling. This place has the best veggie burger in Tampa. Period. I first came to J. Alexander's many years ago, and I'm sure I had something other than the veggie burger, but honestly I don't remember. At some point I tried the veggie burger, and from that point on I've had nothing else ever since. I Googled the recipe and found something in the Orlando Sentinel but I am not positive about its accuracy. It mentioned brown rice as one of the main ingredients, and that seems reasonable to me given the texture. The burger comes with a ginger glaze and Monterey Jack cheese, both of which i always skip. Yes, its that good that it needs none of that. Maybe a little ketchup and mustard for tradition's sake. It also comes with string potato fries but I skip those as well. I never go alone, whether coworkers or family, and they usually get something else despite my pleas for the best veggie burger in Tampa. They get salads, fish, and other entrees which look amazing but I can't speak to their taste as I usually only get a little bite. What I have tasted is good, but it has been years since I've ordered anything but the veggie burger. I'm not sure rating a restaurant only on its veggie burger is smart, but there you have it. If you want the most awesome veggie burger experience in Tampa, go to J. Alexander's. No, angels will not come down from the heavens and sing when you bite into it, but if you've eaten the traditional Boca burgers, this one will be like a filet mignon compared to quality dog food. J Alexander's was definitely yummy!! I was initially disappointed due to the item I'd read raving reviews about on Yelp was not featured last night. My waiter said it just been the feature the night before, needless to say my heart broke. The spinach con queso quickly warmed my heart back up, it was so good and the chips were so fresh. We had good dinner here. We were suspicious because it is not a flashy restaurant, and could probably use some updating on the outside. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and saw the nice large open kitchen. It looked very clean and people were working hard on what looks like great food. We ordered cocktails which arrived after the salads were served. The entrees followed after only a few bites of salad. The salad plates were literally pushed aside by the entree plates being served. First experience at this great restaurant! My son and I enjoyed our steaks, which were cooked perfectly, and both the huge loaded baked potato and the mountain of skinny fries were perfect. The only suggestion is to re-examine your recipe for Bearnaise sauce; couldn't taste the tarragon or vinegar at all. We shared your chocolate bundt cake after the great meal and it was delicious too! Ordered a Maui Ribeye and Prime Rib to go, both medium rare. The prime rib we recieved was closer to an end cap piece so it was overdone and way over seasoned. It also seemed the prime rib and side were boxed much earlier than our other order as it was cold by the time we got home. The Maui Ribeye and its side, while still warm, was way too sweet. The marinade ruined what was a perfectly cooked nice cut of meat. While I contend the way the Maui Ribeye is prepared is a matter of taste, the cold, overdone, overseasoned prime rib and its cold side were enough for us to call and complain. The hostess while amiable and genuinely seemed to want to address our concern had us hang up and told us she'd call back. We never received a return call. read more

Here is the deal breaker! The table next to us turned over twice and the table and chair handles were not cleaned either time. Wow. This place has really gone downhill. I use to work at J. Alexander's (as a server and later as a bartender), so I know the caliber of service and the experience one used to get here. No longer. Our experience began when we were handed filthy dirty menus that looked like they hadn't been wiped down all week. Gross. Next, if you have any kind of food allergy/intolerance, I would NOT dine here. I have a gluten allergy and nothing is labeled on the menu and there is no separate allergen menu. Further, our waitress had no basic understanding of gluten and told me that "You should be fine with most of our steaks and fish." When she asked the back-of-the-house manager about an item I was considering, I was told, "He thinks the smashed potatoes have gluten, so you'll need to choose something else." These are made in-house. How can a manager not be certain what is in the food they're serving? When our food arrived, my plate had the aforementioned, possibly-gluten-filled potatoes and was missing the vegetable that was supposed to come with the dish. I had to send my plate back and again ask for the loaded baked potato which I originally ordered. The second plate came out with a plain baked potato. To top everything off, our drinks were not refilled all dinner. I had to hunt down our waitress and ask for refills. The food was good, but eating out is more than the food. It's the experience as well. Redlands/J Alexander's is not cheap, but it used to be the good food and top notch experience that made it worth the cost. Not anymore. I've gotten better care with handling my food from quick serve restaurants like First Watch. My aunt and I will not be back here, which is disappointing because Redland's/J Alexander's used to be a nice place to treat yourself. read more

We went to Redlands Grill not knowing that it had changed its name from J Alexanders. The sign in front of the building says Redlands grill while the sign on the street says J Alexanders. It was kind of confusing since we didn't know of the name change. We were sat almost immediately and our waiter was very good. The dim lighting and real candles made for a romantic evening. I ordered the New York strip and my husband ordered the salmon. We also ordered drinks. I ordered a glass of house Chardonnay. When we got the bill it was $15 for a house Chardonnay. When the salmon came out it was undercooked. It was really almost raw. We sent it back and it came back perfect. My steak was decent. The broccoli wasn't that great. We thought it was odd that bread service wasn't a standard. When we asked for bread he said it was only available upon request and it was "just sourdough". It was really good though. At the end of the meal our waiter offered without us asking if we'd like to have a complementary dessert and coffee for our trouble with the food. It was an unexpected surprise as we didn't ask for anything in return. We had the carrot cake and it was very good. It came out warm on a plate for us to share. After visiting with my future mother in law, we realized it was a bit early to go back to the hotel, so Yelp came to the rescue, we were looking to have a night cap, we found a couple of bars but we opted for J Alexander's because we noticed since the local hockey team was playing (the Lighting Bolts) all the bars in the area were so crowded, but this steakhouse was just crowded enough. We decided to stay at the bar because we were just looking to have a drink. The service was just perfect, the bartender knew exactly what she was doing, our drinks were amazing. We had a Kamikaze and a dirty martini. Before we went back to the hotel we decided to try their food, so we shared a plate, Steak Medallions with mushrooms and a wine sauce reduction with mashed potatoes, I'm glad we decided to share, it was more than enough for the both of us. If you haven't been to J. Alexanders, stop what you're doing and go right now! For years this has been my absolute favorite restaurant. The food is always amazing and the staff continually surprises us with their ability to anticipate our needs before we even ask. My favorites: Starter - Mexico City Spinach con Queso Entrees - Barbecue Danish Baby Back Ribs, Steak Maui, and Cypress Salad Sides - Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese, and Beef Steak Tomatoes (if they're in season) Dessert - Carrot Cake Even if the service was terrible, we would keep going back for the food - it's that good. But this place really stands out because the service is also on point every time we visit! The hostess is always polite and helpful, and our servers have been absolutely wonderful. Since our first visit we've noticed that many different servers visit our table to help refill drinks, deliver food, and even just to check on us.
