This is a great spot to grab lunch in Tampa, I've only been here once for dinner, but since they are so much less crowded at lunch and have the same menu, I prefer stopping in in the afternoon. The service is very good here, and the leave bottles of water at the table which I love. Definitely get the artichokes as an appetizer, they are cooked perfectly and they give you warm napkins for cleanup after. The salads are huge here, and super fresh and well made. If you get keep eating after your entree definitely get the chocolate cake, its to die for. read more

Fantastic food and wine here. Our waitress was tops. But the evening was soured by what I'd imagine is the manager of the bar area. We had finished eating but we hadn't yet decided if we were staying. The older gentleman who presented us with our bill helped us decide to leave. Was stunned when the lady asked me to take her here. I had thought they closed years ago but apparently they just changed names (maybe owners?). Anyway, how have I not heard how great this restaurant is?? First, it smells like heaven for a cowboy on the range - they use hickory and cedar wood for all their grilling and you can smell it in the parking lot - fantastic introduction to the grilling they do. Seating was quick and the dining room was almost full on a Thursday night. Our server, Nathan, tall and charming, fast and efficient, great service and very attentive! I had grilled artichokes because they are my favorite, but you have to know how to eat them, and I was shocked when they brought out not one half, not one, but two complete artichokes for the price of an appetizer. It almost filled me up. The lady had the calamari and it was lightly breaded with nice seasoning and they only brought the curls, she hates the squid heads so that app went down quickly. We split the filet kabobs, which at other places are usually a bit overcooked with lackluster veggies, but not here. They had been marinated for at least 12 hours, I could cut the meat with a fork and it was as good as any filet in Tampa, and it was full plate of beef, had to take it home. Veggies were crunchy, not overcooked and this meal is epic for the price. The lady got a chocolate espresso that was super strong (she doesn't drink much) and I had Nathan select a Malbec and it was chilled and just enhanced the kabob. Another excellent meal at J Alexander's in Tampa. Its to bad they closed the location in Orlando on Sand Lake road. All the company needed to do is fire the restaurant manager (Rison) and replace him with someone that could do the job. We use to eat at the Orlando one 3 times a week. I have literally eaten everything on the menu. Jason was a great Chef, and there were several other managers like Beth that really did there best to cover for Rison's inadequacies. It was a complete shame that they closed. Now its a 2 hour round trip to Tampa. I end every meal at j's with a carrot cake. Highly recommended read more

Been here twice now and both times the experience was great. Staff are all very friendly, extremely efficient and competent. The food is delicious - meat and fish cooked perfectly to order and clearly all very fresh. The carrot cake is a must have (although could easily be shared between 3 per portion!) - its warm with a cream cheese icing and is simply to die for! I'm told for fans of chocolate cake, that too is special. It is above average in terms of price but well worth it for a treat or special occasion. Would thoroughly recommend. read more

Excellent Service! Mediocre Food. I HAVE NEVER HAD BETTER SERVICE ANYWHERE! (I can't say the same about the food unfortunately.) Fish Tacos were drab. The fish was fried, tasted like cod, not my first choice for fish tacos. I believe the menu had a description similar to "fresh daily fish with xxx on top" except I'm fairly certain that wasn't fresh fish. Pork chops were Ok. The waitress said "melt in your mouth" but they were pretty chewy and far from "melting". The sauce and the smashed potatoes that came with the chops were their saving grace. The macaroni and cheese was excellent, very creamy, huge portion, no complaints there. The KEY LIME PIE was spectacular! Huge portion, amazing crust, fresh and delicious, perfect 10! Considering the cost of the average entree and my relative dissatisfaction, I wouldn't be inclined to go back; after all, it's the food and not the service that I'm really interested in when I dine out. I came here to celebrate my 30th birthday with my husband because I wanted to try somewhere new and to be honest I just wasn't "wowed", which was surprising giving the good reviews on this restaurant. I ordered the 16 oz Ribeye and it was simply just okay at best. My husband had the Prime Rib which was better than what I had. Aside from the food however, what really dampened the experience was our server. I'm not sure if we caught him on a bad night but he just wasn't the most friendly which was upsetting for me since it was my birthday. Prime rib was cooked perfectly for each of us and seasoned well. And OMG the warm carrot cake... something you should definitely have. Alexander offers the most robust-juicy-finger-lickin'-good hamburger my mouth has ever come across. =P Stopped here for lunch on a rainy day -- the wait was a bit long as they are extremely busy during lunch. It gets so loud that I could barley hear the waiter and even myself ... but who cares! Service is extremely polite, friendly and prompt. Our waiter was constantly wiping our tables which is a plus for clean freaks like me, yay! The menu was tough because everything looked amazing; from burgers to steak and even mac & cheese! I love J.Alexanders and eat there as often as possible in Fort Lauderdale. But on a Saturday night at 9:45pm, to sell out of rare and med-rare prime rib, and the trout fish special, C'mon, the chef should be fired! That is purely unacceptable. Prime rib is made ahead of time and leftovers never go to waste as they are used for dip sandwiches on the menu for the next day or two. We got up and left, I have never been so disappointed in this place in my life. And the manager didn't even bother to come over and apologize. We had planned a special dinner with a bottle of wine and left disappointed and hungry . Serious managerial problem from the front of the house to the back! The Chef should know better!!!! read more

Perfect experience at this restaurant. It was one of those pinch-me situations with the service (good punch!), and the food was spot on. Im back for another review. Like I said - I come for the food. The service is typically just ok. But this time it was much better and my Maui steak was pretty damn good too. The deviled eggs were on point and the mac & cheese... yumo. I was confused with the "tableside" desserts - when those are the same ol' ones they had before. Be nice if they up'd their dessert game. I decided the carrot cake with the white icing merely looks better than it actually is. In my opinion (no shade- I get'em all the time) just came to the conclusion it's over-rated. read more

Dinner Tues 2/2 not much of an appetizer selection so we started with the soup, it was good, just soup. Hubby ordered the steak and fries ($21) ordered medium rare came out more toward medium but it's a thin cut of steak so not surprised. It was very good and had a nice smokey taste to it. I had the ahi tuna with ginger glaze, potatos and slaw ($26) was good, nothing great, for that price I expected it to be really good. The salad dressings were very good and you could tell they were homemade. The service was very good as well. The drinks perfectly poured. All in all a good night, but I'm not in a hurry to return, their menu just didn't impress me that much. A lot of items you could make or get everyday anywhere just with better service and a nice atmosphere. Definitely worth at least one try though. read more

Grouper Bites on Appetizer Menu are enough to be meal for one person and served with a large amount of their superb string french fries. Grouper was thick, fresh, fried perfect. So good they were the best cooked grouper I ate after visiting 2 other restaurants on the beach famous for their grouper. As an appetizer, plenty for 2 to 4 people. I've been spoiled by J Alexanders. Every word you have ever heard about this place being amazing is true No other place makes prime rib like they do and trust me...I have been looking. One place in Brandon came close, but the service and atmosphere could not compete, so back to J Alexanders I will go!!! The prime rib melts in your mouth! It is so tender and juicy and cooked perfectly every single time. My husband prefers steak because he likes his well done and not so juicy. He loves the steak here, even though I personally thought his steak wasn't nearly as awesome as my primerib. The sides are amazing as well and the service is top notch. I will admit, we don't go often because they are far from where we live and a bit pricey but well worth every penny and the gas money spent to get there. The dining room is upscale and comfortable. Compared to Burns steak house, I am much more comfortable at J Alexanders. My only complaint about this place ever was how many people got there before me, but I just learned they take reservations so that solves that! read more

Went recently to celebrate a friend's birthday. It honestly wouldn't have been my first choice but I was thoroughly impressed. I had always felt the menu was a bit limiting at J Alexanders but some recent updates seemed to have fixed that. I enjoyed the Cypress Salad (which I ordered with grilled chicken instead of fried. One day I will learn that fried is always better) and the homemade ranch dressing. They also serve a nice array of entrees, burgers, sandwiches, and fish tacos. My friend enjoyed her cheeseburger with a side of haricots vert, she could not stop raving about the side! Our other friend enjoyed the fish tacos with a side of skinny french fries. J Alexanders also has a nice wine and cocktail selection. I was impressed by their hot tea presentation. Desserts are fab. We went a little overboard and each had one. We all sampled the dense chocolate bundt cake served with hot fudge and ice cream, key lime pie, and carrot cake served with a warm cream cheese frosting. It was a great place for a special occasion. I was in Tampa for a sorority conference and I had to plan yes you know it go to J. Alexander! What I wanted the most was the mac and cheese which I remember to be awesome. Yes I ordered the mac and cheese and you know it was just not what I remembered or was it just a fantasy? Any who, the chicken was okay juicy and seasoned but just not something i would run back to get. The chicken comes with a side of chicken broth to pour over the chicken. Then the mac and cheese which was okay but did not have that cheesy thingy to it. The service baby was all that and then some. The waiter replenished my beverage steadily. I enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The food was amazing! The servers were great so very helpful. The drinks menu wasn't extremely vast but neither is their menu. Look let's face it if all dishes at this price are 5 star meals then I don't mind a 1 page menu. Every one in my party of 10 loved their dinner. We tried just about everything calamari, deviled eggs (did have a couple of shells but not a deal breaker), steak, ceaser salad, burger, pasta, and chicken tenders. My husband had heard about this place from some co-workers so we decided to try it. I like the atmosphere, sophisticated without being stuffy. I think I was wearing jeans and I never felt out of place. Our waiter was a bit strange, but he was very friendly and provided great service. The food was pretty good. Probably 4 star food, but given the service and atmosphere I'm giving the restaurant 5 stars overall. We will definitely be back, can't wait to try more. For an app we ordered the calamari (very good, melts in your mouth) and the shrimp. I can't remember what the shrimp were called but they came with cocktail sauce and a sweet dijon sauce. The shrimp in the dijon sauce is one of the best things I've ever eaten. It was on the chef recomendations menu, not their permanent menu so I hope that they plan on keeping those shrimp arround for a long time. I definitely want them again. read more

Good but not spectacular food. Not really a steakhouse, certainly not a seafood restaurant, though they offer both. It's almost like an upscale Houston's. The service is attentive, but nothing really is "wow." The open kitchen is certainly a nice touch. Everything is clean and professional. We very much enjoyed their salads & extra-cheese, mac & cheese. It attracts a lot of business lunch traffic but service is nicely paced without dawdling or rushing. Prices are reasonable, esp. for the classy feel of the place. Lots of leather and dark wood, and mostly booth seating. This not a Mom & Pop feeling bistro. Located just south of the Interstate at the SW corner of the Spruce St. intersection. Give it a try, even if the adjoining Borders book store is now closed and you must browse elsewhere. read more

This place! I had the pleasure of coming here for a work lunch and I'm so happy we decided on here. The atmosphere is beautiful. Although it was rather busy, we had no problem getting a table for 6. We were immediately greeted by our server and made sure we knew the specials and his recommendations. I order an iced tea and as soon as one glass was finished I already had another one waiting. I ordered the grilled chicken salad, which should be renamed the grilled yummy salad. To me this salad was practically perfect. The chicken was carved so it was very easy to eat on a fork, they had the perfect amount of vegetables and FETA cheese. Usually at restaurants I always order extra salad dressing on the side because I never think there is enough...not this time. There was more than enough dressing on it. It was a wonderful meal. Came for a late lunch on a Thursday and it was relatively quiet. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and was pleasantly surprised. Not your typical grilled chicken salad at all. The unexpected mingling of flavors was a delightful treat. I even enjoyed the carrots and olives (which I normally exclude). The vinaigrette was delicious especially coated over the tortilla strips.
