Great meal. Had a "Cheat Day" Burger and loved every bite. I was catching up with an old friend for lunch halfway between her office and mine, we picked J. Alexander's Redland's Grill. I am so glad we did. The food was great. I ordered a steak burger and it was perfectly prepared. My friend had a salad with grilled chicken added. She loved it. I typically eat there at dinner, and have always have a good experience. The manager stopped by to check on everyone's table. I find that sort of practice really thoughtful. I went to J. Alexander's with really no expectations since all I had a hankering for was some grilled salmon, rice and a veggie. I was truly disappointed with what they presented me with as well as the service. First, the server was certainly pleasant, but I got the feeling that it was maybe his first week on the job because he seemed unsure of the menu. I would ask him about the entrees and he would always respond with something that sounded like he was guessing. I give him a pass at this point. I had salmon with orzo and wild rice. I think calling this rice "wild" was an understatement. It had currants, cranberries, corn, some kind of nut and a muddle of other ingredients. To make it even more disappointing, the rice/orzo was cold! The menu should have listed this as an orzo and rice SALAD so that the customer knows that it will be served cold. They really need to update their menu to include this. I compare the experience to going to take a swig of your Pepsi and it turns out to be Root Beer. It's not bad, but it's just not what you expected. Where our server lost points was when I told him that I didn't expect for it to be served cold, he says, "Yeah, I should've mentioned that it's cold. People tell me that a lot once they get it." What the hail man?! The good: The salmon was good, but it was overshadowed by my rejection of the orzo/rice and the fact that I paid $16 for a piece of salmon since that was all that I ate. This was my experience at lunch, so I may try them again for dinner at a later date. read more

I came here for a nice evening and it was so dark I couldn't read the menu. The table next to us was drunk and yelling. The tables were so close there is no way we were six feet apart. The waiter took our drink order and didn't come back for twenty minutes. Even when we decided to leave we couldn't find him. I left the smallest bill I had to cover the two sodas ($20 for two sodas, great!). This restaurant literally gave me a panic attack. When I tried to tell a manager the next day I was hung up on. I'd really appreciate if someone got back to me. As a Tampa native I'll definitely be letting everyone know about my experience when they ask where to eat. Not here! read more

I worked for Houston's for a long time and I consider this place to fill the void in Tampa since the closest Houston's is in Orlando. Atmosphere and decor are almost similar, down to the candle on the table & menu selections. We arrived 6:30pm on New Year's Eve- right before the rush and were seated right away with no reservation. Server was friendly and answered questions and everything came out hot and promptly. We had the queso, I had the steak sandwich and my bf had the ribs. Their ribs are better than Houston's, but Houston's has them beat on spinach dip and steak sandwich. Overall a good experience though, we will definitely be back. This steak house is one of my favorites. I ordered the spinach and queso dip to start, which was a good app. For my entree, I got the 8oz filet with a side of their famous mac n cheese. Both were amazing, especially the mac n cheese...would highly recommend. Not to mention, our server, Tiffany, was so sweet and prompt. The restaurant was clean and offered an ambient, classy atmosphere. The only thing that could be better is their dessert selection; there isn't much to choose from. If I could've waited to take a picture of the most delicious food ever i would have. Seriously, we started with the most perfectly grilled artichokes, accompanied by some delightful beverages (moscow mule and a doppelganger). We ordered the specials, a ribeye and the scallops. I switched out my couscous for the Mac and cheese. I took a bite of Mac and scallop together and it was heaven in my mouth. Our server, Lorena, was knowledgeable and awesome! Had heard several great things about this restaurant through friends, family and reviews online. So my husband and I decided to take my father-in-law there for their highly recommend prime rib dinner for his birthday, as it's his favorite dish. Luckily, the food was the Best part of the experience. We each had different dishes, from prime rib to their fried chicken platter to the 10 oz filet. All were very good in taste, preparation and portion. I added on their house salad and it was very good as well. The service on the other hand was less than acceptable, especially for a restaurant of this caliber. Although our server was friendly and smiled and I truly feel made his best effort, he just wasn't up to par for service you expect at a fine dining restaurant. He got easily confused there was times where we had no refills and even our glasses were taken to be refilled and never brought back. It made it for a frustrating evening of dining. On a side note the bar is very spacious side room that is not attached to the main dining room. It's a quaint space if you just want to grab a drink meet a friend to talk or just have a simple appetizer. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for our first date and then again on our 3-year anniversary - with a few times in-between. The latest time we came we got the spinach queso dip... which was killer! Then we also split the steak medallions and their house Salad with jumbo asparagus and mashed potatoes. The asparagus were some of the largest asparagus I have ever seen !! And the steak was cooked just perfectly. Lastly, our bartender was simply extraordinary. He bought us a round of drinks for our anniversary and let me annoyingly try three different white wines until I found the one I liked the most. My girlfriend and I had our anniversary dinner at Redlands Grill, and it did not disappoint. Our server Ryan was super friendly and kept up with us throughout the meal to check in. The calamari starter was out of this world, it was spicy and had a great kick to it, the calamari was fresh and definitely not frozen. Next up we both had the rotisserie chicken, and I'm not kidding when I say that this is the best rotisserie chicken that we've both had. The smashed potatoes were amazing as well, and we got a side of Mac and cheese which was unique and delicious (although it was not my girlfriends favorite part of the meal). Overall we will definitely be coming back for the amazing food and service. Unlike some of my other reviews, the wait staff here picked up on the fact that it was a working lunch meeting and carefully considered when to come to the table. The portions are significant and the grilled salmon sandwich was well prepared not overly seasoned, and very juicy. I went with a group of 5. It was out fiends birthday. Gina was our server and oh my goodness, she is one of the best servers I've ever had. We all agreed. She's funny, beautiful, she remembered everything, had great recommendations, and she went above and beyond to make us happy. Plus, she sang opera for her birthday!! We Came today for my dads 70th birthday. It's a pricey place (I had a glass of house Chardonnay with a tuna salad & my bill was $30) so the expectation was a certain level of service. The food was tasty - our table had grilled artichokes, mac & cheese, the "Rattlesnake Pasta, tuna salad, & French Dip sandwiches - all were delicious. Our French Dip sandwiches had lots of fat, but one was replaced with a leaner one & we were instructed to order it lean if we don't want the fat. Good tip to know if we return. The artichoke is a messy dish with lots of leftover pieces, & they bring you nice hot towels to cleaner fingers after eating it. We had to finally ask another server to clear the table because our server didn't. He even took our order while all the dirty plates of artichoke leaves & towels were there, and walked away leaving it all on the table. We didn't get refills on our Diet Cokes, and we had to get up and get our own silverware rolls from a server station when our meals were delivered. We let our server know we were taking home some of the sandwich and our two full side orders of mac & cheese. He then gave us a box & 2 plastic containers with lids for us to scoop it into ourselves at our table (already crowded 4 top with a chair put on the end for our 5th person). I have no problem doing that in a restaurant, but again, when our entrées are about $20 per plate I would expect it to be done for us. Finally, we ordered dessert and asked for a candle to be put in it, telling our server it was my father's 70th birthday. I'm aware they don't sing or anything silly like that, but when it was delivered no one even said "happy birthday". Finally we paid our checks and our server was doing his closing remarks -"have a good weekend, thanks for coming in" and still no happy birthday. We discussed several restaurants to go out to celebrate and decided to go here. It's busy at lunchtime, they're not hurting for business. Sadly we didn't walk out feeling like we had had a nice, relaxing, celebratory meal. Our total lunch check was over $150 & it was a big day for my dad so it's extra disappointing. read more

I had the "West End" (grilled chicken sandwich) and it was very good. I thought the Mac n cheese I tried was a little bit too much onion flavor but definitely enjoyed my meal. Service was top notch. The waitress was funny and came back to check on us regularly. She was super knowledgeable about the menu and could tell she made service her top priority. Shout out to Matea (and Johnny)! J. Alexanders has seen better days...just like their large sign on Dale Mabry. They really need to update that sign. It has been bleached out over the years and it looks horrible. We moved back to Tampa a few months ago and that sign alone prevented me from going in sooner. It actually looks like it was a sign left up for an establishment that closed decades ago, and it's just been abandoned. Shame on management/owners for allowing that to be the first impression. Now for the inside...They are also long overdue for some updating. Bar stools torn, paint chipped, carpet dirty and old, behind the bar is dirty. We watched bartenders refill mixer bottles without cleaning them first. They refilled them adding to the little remnant that was left in the bottle. Since we were there for lunch, I imagine the leftover mixers were from the night before. They refilled the mixer bottles with liquids in plastic containers without dates or labels. The dish that the check came out on had something that resembled barbecue sauce on it. The service was nice, I don't have one complaint about our service. Very attentive, very nice. The food was good. Too bad everything else was just so let go. Until they do some updating, I just can't recommend. There are too many other places in Tampa to spend your hard earned money. read more

Saturday evening dinner for two. No reservations at 5:40 pm so we waited about 45 minutes to be seated. Delightful server. We started with the delicious Deviled Eggs. Oh yum! Hubby had the appetizer fried chicken tenders & French fries. Ample portion! He loved them. I had Rattlesnake Pasta. One of my favorites there. J Alexander's the Redlands is located off of Cypress and Dale Mabry Street with construction currently surrounding the restaurant. When entering the restaurant, you are greeted to a nice open kitchen. My visit was later in the evening, the resturant was nicely dimmed and had a great ambiance. I came with a group of 5. The seating is great for groups or intimate settings with candles as the centerpiece. The staff was very welcoming and attentive overall. I ordered the slow roasted prime rib with a side of not your ordinary mac and cheese. The prime rib was just okay to me, it had a lot of fat on the meat that I had to cut off. It was nicely tender and cooked medium correctly. It was lightly seasoned so it wasn't too flavorful but for more flavor you can dip it in the sauce that comes with the dish. I personally like a steak that doesn't need sauce. However the not so ordinary mac and cheese was not ordinary at all. The mac and cheese was excellent and I would highly recommend it! read more

I was in Tampa again, so the first place the wife and I had to visit was J. Alexander's RG. Not only did we visit the first day we were in Tampa, but we visited on the 3rd day, the 4th day and even a few more times. This is certainly one of my favorite restaurants in the Tampa area with a good menu selection and very consistent high quality. My favorite is certainly the burger, or maybe it's the grouper sandwich. Let's just say it's all good, and be sure to leave room for the carrot cake or the very best key lime pie I've ever tasted. read more

Really deserves zero stars, but that is not a choice. This was our third trip to this restaurant on Easter day 2022. This trip absolutely ruined our entire day. We had family in from out of town and thought this would be a good option for Easter instead of cooking. I ordered verbally and touched the menu as to what I wanted and they sent me the wrong food. And it took them nearly an hour to get me the wrong food Even though the restaurant was over 1/2 empty. They said that they would make the proper item for me but that also took over a half an hour to come. Our entire party was done eating before they had my replacement out to me so I told him to stick it. My daughter's boyfriend steak looked like it came right out of the fireplace, it was burned so badly that he had to scrape the char off the outside of it. His french fries were ice cold as well. My daughters prime rib was ice cold as well. So what did they do to fix the situation? They compped my daughter's boyfriend's meal and my meal and still made me pay the rest of the bill. Unbelievable, they should have taken responsibility for ruining everyone's meal. On our first visit to this "restraunt " food was so salty that we could not even eat it. My wife and I were in Tampa and really in the mood for a great steak. We saw the reviews and decided to give J. Alexander's a try. The first thing we were met with was SLOW service. We sat for over 5 minutes without anyone even greeting us. Then, the service continued to be horrible. It was like an act of god to get the bill at the end. As for the order, we both got a ribeye. Wow, we were shocked when it arrived coated in sickening sweet pineapple hawaiian type sauce. Yuk! You could not taste any of the meat - just the overpowering sugar and nasty sauce taste.
